Girls basketball raises over $2,700 for cancer research

Fundraising efforts recognized by district, local media

or one night in the Middle School/High School gym, it wasn’t about red and white for the Holley Hawks. The night was all about pink and green.

The Holley girls varsity and junior varsity teams came together to raise a lot of green during the Senior PINK night on Feb. 5. Under the helm of varsity head coach Mark Thomas, the student-athletes promoted the event for seven days and raised over $2,700.

All of the money will be donated to the More than a Game Foundation and dispersed between two causes: $1,000 to breast cancer research and $1,718 to the Golisano’s Children’s Hospital at Strong. The event included a half-court shooting contest, a raffle for a Buffalo Sabres package, chance auction items and a 50-50 raffle. The teams’ efforts did not go unnoticed. On Feb. 7, the team, their families and the community were recognized as a 13WHAM News Bright Spot. Also, Coach Thomas was awarded a Soaring to New Heights Award by the district on Feb. 11.

Board of Education

to be reduced from nine to six members effective July 1, 2013

s part of the budget vote and board of education election last May, voters approved the following proposition to reduce the number of school board members: “Resolved that the Board of Education of Holley Central School District be reduced from nine members to seven members, effective July 1, 2013, and further reduced from seven members to five members, effective July 1, 2015, with vacancies on the board filled for terms that ensure, as nearly as possible, that equal numbers of board members will be elected each year.”

However, the Education Law of the State of New York requires that the reduction approved by voters be implemented as soon as possible rather than being phased in over a period of two years. Therefore, the positions held by current board members John Heise, Dorothy Morgan and Brenda Swanger, whose terms of office expire on June 30, 2013, will be eliminated, and no one will be elected to the board of education this year. As a result, the board will consist of six members effective July 1, 2013. Effective July 1, 2014, there will be a further reduction from six board members to five. The terms of office of current board members Salvatore DeLuca, Jr., Norman Knight and Robin Silvis will expire on June 30, 2014, and only two of those positions will be filled at the school budget vote and board of education election in May 2014. For this reason, voters will not see a proposition for the elections of school board members on the ballot at this year’s Budget Vote – May 21, 2013. A budget workshop will be held Monday, March 11 at 6 p.m. in the Elementary School cafeteria. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. Budget information will be available on the district website and a budget newsletter will be mailed to residents in May. 2

Soaring to New Heights

t its Feb. 11 meeting, the Board of Education recognized kindergartner Cameron Rowley with a Soaring to New Heights Award. Cameron’s sixth birthday was Dec. 22 and rather than receiving gifts for his birthday, he chose to collect toys and school supplies to distribute to the children at the Golisano Children’s Hospital over the holidays. His classmates donated new crayons, markers and Scholastic books. In addition, their teacher, Sue Thornton, made and donated one dozen crocheted hats for the young patients.

“Cameron was to be recognized for his good deed on WROC’s evening news on Dec. 24, but his story never made the news due to the unfortunate circumstances that took place in Webster that day,” said Thornton, who presented him with his award. Kindergartner Cameron Rowley with his parents, Elissa and Jeremy Rowley, and his teacher, Sue Thornton, after receiving his Soaring to New Heights Award.

100 Acts of Kindness

eigh Weaver’s kindergarten class celebrated Valentine’s Day in a very special way this year. They learned about what could be considered an act of kindness at home, in school and in the community. Then their teacher sent home Valentine hearts along with instructions to parents. Students were asked to do at least five acts of kindness and they really rose to the occasion. Some of the acts included cleaning their rooms, helping dad with the garbage, telling grandma “I love you,” and picking up their toys. They wrote each act on a heart and brought it back to their teacher, who displayed the hearts in the hallway. The goal was to have at least 100 acts by Valentine’s Day, to be more aware of being kind and helping others, and to build a sense of community.

A Special Valentine

Congrats Hawks! zz Congratulations to Andrew Flanagan and Mike Silvis as they both placed high on the podium at the New York State Wrestling Championships. Silvis was a takedown away from being in the finals as he battled to place third. Flanagan placed fifth. Flanagan and Silvis represented Section V, which won the Division 2 team title. zz Congratulations to the varsity cheerleaders for placing fifth out of the 11 teams at the Section V Cheerleading Winter Sectionals on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Girls on Track

Spring registration open

egistration is now open for a spring session of Girls on Track at Holley CSD.

After a successful fall Girls on the Run campaign, 15 female students in grades 5 and 6 will have an opportunity to participate in Girls on Track in the spring. Girls on the Run is a national organization that is curriculum based to build self-esteem and confidence in girls while encouraging activity. The 10-week program is in a team-like setting with 15 girls and two coaches. Holley’s spring 2013 group will be coached by Kim Harrington and Corrinda Shepherd. The program was implemented by Lynn Vendetti and Paula Sanford. There is a $150 program fee which includes sessions throughout the 10-week program, a healthy snack at the sessions, an official Girls on the Run of Buffalo T-shirt, a water bottle and 5K race registration for designated GOTR end-of-season 5K. Scholarships are available online on a sliding scale up to 100 percent of program cost. Application is available at the end of the registration form. Applicants will be notified by GOTR staff if they qualify for financial aid and a spot will be held once you register. For more information, visit www.holleycsd.org/gotr.

Alumni Hall of Fame Nominations due April 26

he Holley Central School District has an Alumni Hall of Fame to recognize Holley High School alumni who have achieved distinction at the local, regional, national or international level in any appropriate area of endeavor, such as academics/education, arts, business, media, public/military service, philanthropy or science. Nominees must be graduates of Holley High School of at least 10 years. The nomination form is due to Superintendent Robert D’Angelo by Friday, April 26, 2013. The District Improvement Team will review the applications and make a selection. The honoree will be recognized at the high school awards ceremonies in June, and a plaque will be displayed in the foyer of the Middle School/High School. The Alumni Hall of Fame began with the 2009-10 school year. Recognized alumni include James J. Piedimonte (2010) and Mary Leuze (2011).

Holley to host Color Guard Show - March 16

olley Middle School/High School Music Department will be hosting its first ever Color Guard Show on Saturday, March 16 at 6 p.m. at the Elementary School. Fifteen color guards from across New York State and Canada will be competing for trophies in six different classes. In addition, the Thunder of the East Color Guard from the University at Buffalo will perform. The event is open to the public and tickets are $5 each. Tips for Tough Times: Children and Grief

ealing with a loss is difficult for any individual. It is important to help children through the tough emotional time by recognizing their feelings, allowing them to make the best choices for themselves and setting up a support system for them.

The Dougy Center, which is the national center for grieving children and families, put together tips on how to help a grieving child. Below are shortened versions of these tips. For the full article and additional information, visit www.dougy.org. Answer the questions they ask. Even the hard ones. When they ask questions about a death, it’s usually a sign that they’re curious about something they don’t understand. As an adult, a couple of the most important things you can do for children is to let them know that all questions are okay to ask, and to answer questions truthfully. Be sensitive to their age and the language they use. Give the child choices whenever possible. After a death, having choices allows children to grieve a death in the way that is right for them. Sometimes children in the same family will choose differently. For example, one child may want pictures and memorabilia of the person who died, while another may feel uncomfortable with too many reminders around. Talk about and remember the person who died. Bringing up the name of the person who died is one way to give the child permission to share his or her feelings about the deceased. It reminds the child that it is not “taboo” to talk about the deceased. Sharing a memory has a similar effect. It also reminds the child that the person who died will continue to “live on” and impact the lives of those left behind.

Students planning to attend college after graduation should be filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete your form online. The FAFSA is the source of all federal and state aid, loans, and work-study programs. The form must be filled out online and submitted to the colleges by their due dates in order to be eligible for these programs.

Community College Plans?

Anyone planning to attend a community college after graduation should have applied by now. Once the deposit has been sent in, students can take placement tests and register for classes. The earlier, the better!

Juniors – sign-up for the SAT and/or ACT

Juniors who are considering college after graduation should plan to take the SAT and/or ACT in May or June. Students can register online at www.collegeboard.com for the SAT and at www.actstudent.org for the ACT. Students currently receiving free or reduced price lunches should see their counselor for a fee waiver – come quickly because the fee waivers run out.

Listen without Judgment One of the most helpful and healing things we can do for a child is to listen to his or her experiences without jumping in to judge, evaluate or fix. Hold a Memorial Service and Allow for Saying Goodbye Allowing children and teens to say goodbye to the person who died is important in beginning the grieving process. Before the service, let children know what is going to happen, who will be there, where and when it takes place and why it’s important. Should they choose not to participate, invite them to create their own commemorative ritual or activity for saying goodbye—planting a flower or tree, holding a candle-lighting ceremony. Take a Break More than adults, children need time to take a break from grief. It is important to know that it’s okay to take a break. Having fun or laughing is not disrespectful to the person who died; this is a vital part of grieving, too. Senior Planning

Respect Differences in Grieving Styles Children often grieve differently from their parents and siblings. Recognizing and respecting that each child grieves in his or her own way is essential to the healing process for a family. Listen to children talk about their feelings and watch their behavior, and you will help clarify and affirm these natural differences.

The ASVAB is coming!

On Monday, March 25, the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) will be administered to high school students. This is a test that not only qualifies students to enlist in the military, but is also a free aptitude test that explores what jobs students would be best suited for in the real world. Students in grades 10-12 are encouraged to take this test regardless of whether or not they have an interest in joining the military. Stop by the counseling office to sign up. A workshop will be conducted at the MS/HS to review the results.

College Information Events

The College Admission Information Night (CAIN) will be held on Monday, March 5 at 6:45 p.m. at Brockport High School. College representatives from UB, Brockport, FLCC, RIT and others will be attending to answer questions regarding the college admissions process. Please make every effort to attend! The Rochester National College Fair will be held at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Wednesday, March 13 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 6-8:30 p.m. Sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) and hosted by the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling (NYSACAC), this event is free and open to the public.

When he eventually encounters his first human – Jane Porter, a curious young explorer – both their worlds are transformed forever.

The Playaways are pre-loaded audio players that students can use by simply plugging in their headphones and pushing the PLAY button – no listening device is needed. The books on CD require a CD player or computer to listen to a book. The library has two CD players available for checkout, too.
