Alexandra Browne Alexandra Browne trained and worked as an architect for a number of years before switching to the interior design world at Rose Uniacke. Since 2018, Alexandra has once again refined the scale on which she works and now produces a bespoke range of hand-painted ceramic wall tiles that bring a touch of glamour and panache with a playful twist to any home. Each tile that Alexandra paints is unique, not only in terms of design but also the textures that the fine brush strokes produce after firing. The resulting installations are therefore both aesthetically beautiful and also remarkably tactile. Her themes include glamorous sunbathers on the French Riviera, penguins waddling across the ice and skiers that career down the wall as a slope! Alexandra's tiles can be found in houses, chalets and hotels across the world and the installations can be customised to the client's specific brief. She is also working on developing a line of fabrics using her designs which will be available soon – watch this space or follow her on insta to see the latest developments. In the meantime Alexandra has produced a fabulous collection of hand painted Christmas baubels – the perfect decoration for every Christmas tree! Alexandra lives and works in Oxfordshire.

Alexander McQueen Duncan Alexander McQueen Duncan was born in 1973 and grew up in Oxfordshire. The son of a painter and a sculptor he had little alternative other than pursuing art and design as a profession. After his degree course at Central Saint Martins his work focused entirely on landscape, figure painting and portraiture. He became a tutor in painting and drawing at the Heatherley School of Fine Art in Chelsea where he currently teaches. In 2007, Duncan was awarded the Royal Society of British Artist’s Rome Scholarship and a period of direct study from observation of Rome’s ancient Forum and the surrounding rural landscape. An extensive period of travel across Italy followed with a major solo show in Milan opened by the Assessor of Culture in Milan. The exhibition entitled ‘Transience and Permanence’ explored the fusion between objective time based recordings and impressions recalling the experience as a whole. Duncan’s work engages with abstract and expressionist elements drawn from both direct observation and memorised sensations; a visual dialogue between representational and contemplative observation. Transparency is one of the keys to his paintings forming a subtext or underpainting alluding to images which are sensed before they are seen. In many cases the main subject is revealed through a number of drawn or printed images over which transparent drifts of colour and over drawn tracery interact with the original marks. His current work has moved towards an experimental approach using wood, metal, mixed media and printmaking. Glimpses and fleeting moments are fused with embedded images, a convergence not only of different ways of seeing and interpretation but in visually activating the picture plane both pictorially and as a spontaneous descriptive and expressive surface.

Andrew Norrey In 1985 Andrew Norrey had a sell out exhibition. His work, described by The Portal Gallery, Mayfair, as ‘Byzantian’ and ‘jewel like’ the opening party at Claridge’s was attended by Thyssens, Rothermeres, and senior British royalty. While continuing to paint through the 80s and 90s he worked for the legendary Michael Roberts at Tatler fashion ‘a hugely creative period’ and Rosa Monckton at Tiffany & Co. Upon his departure from Tiffany, two regional Presidents, Australia/South East Asia, and United Kingdom described him as ‘creative genius’ In 2008 The Independent on Sunday’s Charles Darwent wrote ‘..his enigmatic canvases reclaim landscape as a genre for contemporary art’ and in 2020 by Gurr Johns’ Senior Picture Valuer, on him as ‘following in the tradition of many great British artists’ and his work as ‘magical’ and ‘works of painterly exuberance’ Recently, his friend of many years Manolo Blahnik described him as a ‘great talent’ and his works as ‘exquisite renderings’ . Andrew is showing a collection of new works November and December 2023 ‘BETWEEN THE WOODS & THE TREES’. His extraordinary use of fluorescence lends this latest works a magical air. The pieces look wonderful in daylight but in the evening, with the use of UV lighting they reach new stunningly beautiful and mystical depths Andrew has over 150 paintings in either private or corporate collections, including the collections of several prominent collectors, a diptych he painted titled 'Two Halves to One Peace' is in the collection of H.M. Biddy Hodgkinson Brought up in the 1960s on a farm in England, Biddy Hodgkinson was constantly observing life and death cycles. In mid-life, Hodgkinson attended Chelsea College of Art where she developed her true love of colour and painting, graduating in Fine Art (BA Hons). Inspiration for her work comes from close observations of lifecycles and a fascination for the beauty and luminosity in decay. Through painterly and alchemic techniques, she interprets the violent intensity and beautiful imagery we see in natural decay and mould by using harmful agents, such as acids, to erase and bleach away large swathes of colours, showing them in the context of their own negation as they would be in nature. She creates intriguing, sculptural and tactile surfaces on the canvas. As Wallace Stevens wrote, "death is the mother of beauty".

Holly Frean ‘Holly Frean is famed for her witty animal themed work and her quirky take on the lives of great painters, she is an artist who revels in repetition’ said Gill Morgan ‘I’m not interested in reproducing the face exactly, it’s more about the shape and the feel of the whole painting as an object, it’s a portrait second and a painting first.’ Says Holly. She is hard to pigeonhole and is commercially savvy and sought after. She has a diverse range of work and has collaborated with brands such as Burberry, Paul Smith and worked with interior designer Andrew Martin and hotelier Kit Kemp A recurring theme in her work is an almost obsessive drive to understand the essence of something by painting it many times, from many different viewpoints or by juxtaposing it with lots of similar images. There is something in the combination that both intrigues and amuses her. Playful, irreverent and some how quintessentially British she may love repetition but she is most certainly a one off.

Jethro Jackson Jethro Jackson is an artist living and working in North Cornwall. Recent projects have taken Jethro away from the aesthetic he has become best known for and given him space to explore a new narrative, concerned with preserving our most precious natural resources and the traditional ways of gathering them. Whilst still very much connected to his homeland, these paintings are part of a journey towards something new - they represent an exciting aspect of Jethro’s development as a painter who will forever be a Cornishman. These three works here are part of his new collection ‘Above Below and Beyond’ which reflect his growing awareness of the vast mining landscape which exists below the surface of the views familiar in Cornwall. In each work he has a ‘mark’ either a small house, or a pumpstation which grounds his paintings and make the viewer realise the greatness of the world around them, and their own human smallness. Each of these works can be interpreted as representing the sky, horizon, sea, landscape and rock formation below the surface or simply as divisions of the rock strata themselves.

Kelly Jessiman Kelly Jessiman comes from a fine art sculpture background and enjoys bringing shapes and colour into the home. Her ceramics are hand built from the family dinner table. The glazing and firing happens in the back garden shack. Kelly’s inspiration comes from near and far, lately looking into the works of Matisse and recreating the ceramics in his paintings. Playing with juxtaposition of neatly made traditional shapes but crudely made by her hands with organic imperfections, they’re usually glazed with unsuspecting colours. Kelly enjoys the process of pottery and the sometimes unpredictable outcomes it presents.

Marcus Hodge Marcus Hodge is a British Contemporary artist whose work is known for its vitality and sculptural use of paint. He seeks to evoke an instinctive response in the viewer by using minimal language. Central to his work is the juxtaposition of energy and stillness, where visceral layers of paint interact to reveal a glimpse of what lies beneath. With a restrained economy of means, the paintings are less about finish as about the process - a process of not knowing, one that may reveal something you weren’t looking for. The picture finds itself in the mysterious and compelling process of being painted. The Gateways exhibition in 2017 represented a pivotal moment Marcus’ established career, as it fused his love of India with abstraction. The themes of gateways and windows were clear metaphors for this transformation which gave the materials far greater expression, unencumbered by representation. Different tools such as large spatulas, knives and lengths of wood were used to introduce the elements of risk, chance and opportunity. Each painting becomes unique in the artist’s search for the unexpected.

Mark Hilltout Mark studied in the UK at Birmingham Art College and currently livcs in Cape Town. He has travelled extensively and lived in Johannesburg, Hong Kong, Toronto, New York, Brussels and Madagascar where he learned to sew metal. He has always been drawn to the discarded, the imperfect. He is fascinated by car dumps and has long been a collector of enamel commercial signs. Above all, he loves corrugated iron, for all its ancient blemishes and weather-beaten scars. He is always on the lookout for this discarded material which he mainly collects from Townships around Cape Town but also from farmsteads, factories and old homes. His greatest desire is to show the world how beautiful this old rusted metal can be. Lately he has learnt to combine his art with the text-to-image AI called Midjourney. By entering various text prompts relating to his favourite artists such as Matisse and De Stihl such as “overlapping female forms, graphic, on rusted metal, semi-abstract, Matisse’ he has created images that combine nuanced and balanced compositions which he then recreates in his beloved corrugated iron. The results are extraordinary, beautiful, elegant yet gritty and strong. These works are not only fascinating but have the added benefit that they can survive any environment, in the elements outside and in indoor spaces too

Philippine Laureau Philippine was born in Paris and graduated from Central St Martins, in London before moving to South Africa. Her identity is a patchwork of inspirations and experiences collected from all over the world throughout the years, and her artworks are the result of a patient process of sewing and painting which aims to express all the inspirations in a single piece. The roughness of the coffee bags as her canvas and her organic and minimalist intuitive composition bring imperfection, texture and colours into her works. Exploring the creative tension between new objects, and objects that have a past and a story, has seen Philippine’s work shift towards the Japanese aesthetic philosophy called Wabi-Sabi, where beauty is found in imperfection, incompletion and impermanence. She believes that sustainable art has its own future. That is why she collects, repair and recycles discarded objects. Living abroad for so many years Philippine is interested in expressing cultural differences and also similarities. South Africa, with its complexity and diversity (of both people and natural world) has provided her with boundless inspiration. In her work she sews together coffee bags from across the world which represent a united mankind and she creates minimalist, imperfect, colourful, yet complete works that reflect our complex society.

Susie Bidgood Susie's career as a ceramicist began quite innocently many years ago when she started weekly pottery classes. But this soon became a passion and she established a studio in her garden. To further her skills and continue to develop her art, she regularly attends courses run by renowned ceramicists, allowing her to develop her practice whilst exploring new ideas and approaches to ceramics. She has developed a range of techniques including throwing and altering, as well as hand building, to make her unique pieces. Her inspiration comes from a wide range of sources including exploring other art forms such as textiles, jewellery, glass making, or abstract art. Driven by a passion to create, whether playing with the shape of a piece, exploring the marks she can make, and which textures and colour would enhance the piece, she continues to be enchanted by the possibilities of working with clay.
