Women also lead the firm as Chief Operating Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Professional Development and Human Resources Officer, Chief of Office Operations, Chief Integration Officer, Information Governance Partner and Deputy General Counsel, and Associate General Counsel.

Holland & Knight started the firm’s Women’s Initiative in 1996 – a pioneer in the legal profession at the time. Its slogan, “At Holland & Knight, Women Mean Business,” recognized the value of the firm’s women lawyers in generating business, and its goals were to recognize and promote the accomplishment and achievements of the firm’s women lawyers and find ways to support them in business development. That support has continued for more than two decades.

Over the years, the Women’s Initiative, which acts nationally and locally through office coordinators, has hosted client-networking events, added a mentoring program, sponsored professional conferences, engaged inspiring speakers, offered business development programs, developed a first-of-its-kind balanced work-life policy, worked to expand parental leave benefits, initiated an annual health series speaker, published this newsletter and supported numerous charitable and community service causes.

Women currently represent 49 percent of the non-partner attorneys at Holland & Knight and 27 percent of the total partnership. Women occupy leadership positions at all levels of management, including Chair of the Directors Committee; 12 Directors; three Section and Deputy Section Leaders; eight Practice Group Leaders; Industry Sector Group Initiative Chair; seven Executive Partners;

The Women’s Initiative has helped the firm achieve several recognitions, including Working Mother’s Best Law Firms for Women, one of the Top 10 Female Friendly Firms by Yale Law Women, Chambers USA’s Most Pioneering Firm for Female Lawyers, finalist for “Best Gender Diversity Initiative by an International Firm” from Americas Women

in Business Law Awards (WIBL), and Gold Standard Certification from The Women in Law Empowerment Forum (WILEF). Partner and former Women’s Initiative Chair Tammy Knight (FTL) notably was instrumental in the development of the innovative Mansfield Rule program, as it was her team that proposed the rule at Diversity Lab’s Women In Law Hackathon in 2016. The Mansfield Rule has been a driving in force for law firms to establish processes and structure to ensure they have a diverse pipeline of talent being promoted into partnership and leadership positions, and Holland & Knight was one of 92 firms to earn “Mansfield Certified Plus” status in 2021.

One of the signature programs to develop from the Women’s Initiative is the award-winning Rising Star program, a year-long intensive business and leadership development program for senior women attorneys. Partner and former Women’s Initiative Chair Deb Barnard (BOS) and Partner Janis Schiff (WAS) conceived the Rising Star program and launched its first class in 2003. Numerous alumni of the program can be found in leadership positions throughout the firm, including

• Partner Lynn Calkins (WAS), the deputy section leader of the Litigation Section, the practice group leader for the Washington, D.C., Litigation Group and a member of the firm’s Directors Committee

• Partner Vivian Thoreen (LAX/SFO), the executive partner of the Los Angeles office, chair of the firm’s national Private Wealth Services Dispute Resolution Team and a member of the firm’s Directors Committee

• Partner Shannon Hartsfield (TAL), the executive partner of the Tallahassee office

• Partner Tara Scanlon (WAS), the practice group leader of the real estate transactional attorneys in Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia and Philadelphia

• Partner Suzanne Gilbert (ORL), the practice group leader for the Central Florida Litigation Group

• Partners Tammy Knight (FTL), Janene Jackson (WAS) and Tracy Slavens (MIA), members of the Directors Committee

• Partner Judy Mercier (ORL), a co-chair of the national Media Practice Team, the Vice Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Engagement Initiative and a former Women’s Initiative Chair

• Partner Stacey Wang (LAX), the chair of the Asian/Pacific Islander Affinity Group

• Partner Kwamina Williford (WAS), chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Engagement Initiative and co-chair of the Consumer Protection Defense and Compliance Team

As Government Section Leader Karen Walker (TAL/ WAS) observed, “Holland & Knight has always been at the cutting edge when finding ways to support and advance its women’s lawyers. I am fortunate to have spent my entire career at a firm that had the foresight to develop a Women’s Initiative 25 years ago when that was not a norm in the profession. We are a stronger firm today because of the many contributions of our women lawyers and the Women’s Initiative.”

We all are truly fortunate to work at a forward-thinking firm that has placed such a high value on the success of its woman attorneys.

Firm Client Truist Presents Business Development Program

Approximately 150 attorneys attended the program, “The Business Development Playbook – Building Influence and Improving Your Practice,” on September 23, 2021. The program was presented by firm client Truist Legal Specialty Group.

Partner Suzanne Gilbert (ORL) moderated the discussion, which featured Truist Regional Director Chris Pantano and National Sales Director Denise Merinar. The program focused on growth strategies for building one’s practice, starting with client acquisition, then active client engagement and transitioning to long-term relationship management that sets the stage for future business and referrals.

Truist also sent each registrant a copy of The Go-Giver, a marketing strategy guide by Bob Burg that brings to life the proverb, “Give and you shall receive.” Attendees were also invited to a virtual 90-minute training session on November 9, 2021, where Burg provided referral strategies

and explained how to put The Go-Giver practices to work. He also encouraged attendees to find fulfillment and greater success in business, their personal lives and their communities.

Making Connections at CCWC

Partners Vivian Arias (NYC) and Nadia Haghighatian, along with Associates Sydne Collier (both DAL) and Kendall Wilson (TPA), attended the 17th Annual Corporate Counsel Women of Color (CCWC) conference in Los Angeles on September 22-25, 2021. The conference is widely known as one of the most meaningful and impactful of its kind due to its size and draw, with more than 4,500 in-house women attorneys of color attending.

The founder of CCWC, Laurie Robinson Haden, has truly built something special for women attorneys of color. CCWC provides business development and networking opportunities to connect with many current and potential clients at top companies and organizations, including Apple, Google, General Motors, Shell, BP, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Choice Hotels, DTE Energy and the National Football League. Highlights from the conference included a fireside chat with Uber Chief Legal Officer Tony West, HP President of Strategy and Business Management and Chief Legal Officer Kim Rivera and Netflix Director of Business & Legal Affairs Rhonda Adams Medina.

“I have attended at least four CCWC conferences and find them both personally and professionally rewarding,” said Vivian. “This year, I was able to reconnect and share meals with CCWC contacts at Facebook, Starbucks and Sony Music.”

Thompson & Knight was an annual sponsor of the conference for more than a decade and considered it a staple of professional and business development efforts. Holland & Knight recognized the value of the program and committed to a two-year sponsorship.

CCWC’s 2022 event is scheduled for October 5-8 in Atlanta, and the 2023 conference is scheduled for September 27-30 in Washington, D.C.

Insights from the Women Reimagine Conference

2021 Best Law Firms for Women with the 2021 Top Companies for Executive Women.

The purpose of the conference was to “reimagine” a more gender-equitable workplace in a post-pandemic world. The opening remarks recognized that the COVID-19 pandemic created “an inflection point” – a wake-up call to create a workplace where all employees can thrive.

Executive Roundtable

More than a dozen Holland & Knight women attended More than a dozen Holland & Knight women attended Seramount’s Women Reimagine Conference. The virtual event, held on December 9, 2021, combined the

Prior to the start of the conference, Government Section Leader Karen Walker (TAL/WAS) attended the Women’s Executive Roundtable, which brought together C-suite women with law firm leaders.

Seramount President Subha Barry moderated the roundtable and shared thoughts and strategies for the

new workplace with panelists Ann Chow, AT&T Business CEO; Caroline Feeney, Prudential Financial Inc. CEO of U.S. Insurance & Retirement Businesses; and Annette Martinez, State Farm Insurance senior vice president. In addition, Betty Spence, the head of women’s advancement at Seramount, challenged the women executives to take the opportunity to mobilize and create a new workplace that enables success for all employees.

As women in positions of power, the panelists recognized they have a unique opportunity to influence and change the path forward. Bold acts will be necessary to drive change, as “well-behaved women seldom make history.” Building allyship is a key element in making changes, as one will want a safety net of supporters. It’s a time to be innovative and courageous, and to take risks.

Karen also participated in a breakout session addressing how to stem the “Great Resignation” of so many women professionals during the pandemic. It’s evident that women are making choices and looking for employers that can meet their needs. Organizations need to understand this and adapt to the changing demands. It has been referred to as the “life is too short” economy. In the great reshuffle, employers will need to re-think the workplace, how new employees are onboarded and how to build teams. Flexibility will be instrumental in this new normal.

Panel Takeaways

The conference officially began with a fireside chat with Colgate-Palmolive Chairman, President and CEO Noel Wallace, who shared ways his company is supporting women’s advancement.

Attendees also heard from two panels of speakers representing the legal profession and corporate world. Recognizing that most organizations will be moving to a

hybrid model of work, the panelists encouraged women to be intentional on their days in the office. Take advantage of seeing colleagues and meeting with mentors so you do not miss out on opportunities. They recommended building networks, even in a remote work environment, such as through LinkedIn connections or over Zoom coffee meetings. The workplace and workforce are evolving, and we can determine what the future will look like. As one speaker noted, “Balance is not something you find; it’s something you create.” For those wanting to negotiate their schedule, it’s important to plan, communicate and leverage technology.

Organizations also are operating under new principles–they are addressing employee burnout and mental health and the importance of time away from the office. In discussing how to usher in change, organizations must challenge expectations across the board. They will need to listen to their employees and provide resources and access to peer networks and mentors. Employees also need to advocate for themselves and others. This is an opportunity to raise one’s hand and offer new ideas to shape the workplace. New approaches on distribution of work, particularly at law firms, are already resulting in greater efficiencies and more diverse teams – something clients are demanding. Allyship is something to be cultivated going forward as well. Being able to pivot and adapt will be key for a successful workplace.

There were concurrent breakout sessions as well. One in particular addressed “getting unstuck” and finding success and joy in your career. To achieve this, define your core objectives and be ready to bet on yourself. Be confident. Don’t stay frozen, doing only what is necessary for your job. Each person has the ability to change mindset, learn and pivot. People who win often just believe they can. They are successful in large part because they aren’t standing in their own way.

Health Series Focuses on COVID-19 Virus

On November 18, 2021, the Women’s Initiative Health Series presented the webinar, “COVID-19: Prevention, Protocols and Vaccination.” Partner Lynne Xerras (BOS) introduced and facilitated the discussion with Dr. Jodi Larson, vice president and chief quality officer of Boston Medical Center. More than 110 people attended the program.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Larson played a key role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, a Mass General Brigham teaching hospital. She led the team for patient testing in less than 24 hours and worked closely with Mass General Brigham leaders to develop and implement COVID-19 protocols and workflows, as well as manage hospital capacity and resources. She provided daily communication, education and reassurance to hospital staff and to the surrounding public health and community leaders.

During the webinar, Dr. Larson provided data on past and recent rates of infection and hospitalization, along with current trends. She also commented on protocols that have been effective in preventing the spread of the virus.

Dr. Larson then discussed the incredible speed with which the COVID-19 vaccines were developed, explaining how medical experts’ previous knowledge of Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) played a key role in the development of the vaccines. She reviewed the available vaccines and their effectiveness based on clinical trials, and provided information on boosters and the safety of vaccines for children and pregnant women.

It was an informative, timely discussion of a medical issue that unfortunately is still prevalent today and will likely reoccur in the future as variants of the virus surface.

practical, informative and, most importantly, introspective. During the year-long program, I engaged in a variety of professional and personal development opportunities, including leadership training, relationship building and interactive networking activities.

Associate Agnes Doyle (HOU) recently represented Holland & Knight as a member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) 2021 class of Fellows, participating in a landmark program created to identify, train and advance the next generation of leaders in the legal profession.

Agnes leads community service and pro bono efforts as the Public and Charitable Services chair for the Houston office. She also serves on the board of directors for the Holland & Knight Charitable Foundation.

Launched in 2011, the LCLD Fellows Program identifies high-potential attorneys from diverse backgrounds and helps set them on the path to leadership of their organizations, with a goal to produce a generation of attorneys committed to fostering diversity within their individual institutions and the entire legal profession. During her fellowship, Agnes experienced a learning program that included in-person conferences, training in the fine points of legal practice and peer group projects to foster collaboration.

Holland & Knight has participated in the program since its inception. Previous LCLD Fellows at the firm include Partners Vivian Arias, Loren Forrest, Michael Jo, Duvol Thompson (all NYC), Janene Jackson, Kwamina Williford (both WAS), Josh Bosin (ATL), David Binns, Adrienne Dominguez (both DAL), Vivian Thoreen (LAX/SFO) and Tiffani Lee (MIA).

The Women’s Initiative caught up with Agnes to learn about her experience.

Women’s Initiative: Tell us about your experience with the LCLD Fellows Program.

Agnes: I had the honor of being selected as part of a class of 350 attorneys who represent hundreds of top corporations and law firms across the country. My experience as an LCLD Fellow has truly been unique,

As the LCLD Program is dedicated to developing diverse talent, the programs were designed to empower participants with the goal of cultivating leaders and transforming career trajectories. This was achieved through interactive events, executive coaching sessions focused on leadership and management skills, selfbranding sessions, and the pairing of private practice attorneys and in-house counsel fellows in similar industries.

The diverse programming also focused on an array of tools geared toward fostering self-reflection and combating imposter syndrome, managing generational differences in the workplace, communicating effectively with in-house counsel, leading by learning, understanding the roles of sponsors and mentors, beating burnout and displaying resiliency amid stress, as well as how leaders can use their personal commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion to drive change. The LCLD Fellows program also focused on helping me to build impactful connections with other Fellows and to create a long-lasting network that will prove to be invaluable throughout my career.

WI: What were your thoughts on participating in the program during a pandemic?

Agnes: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 LCLD Fellows Program was conducted virtually. While I was concerned about the impact virtual programming would have on my overall experience, I was pleasantly surprised at the benefits that virtual programming offered. Given the circumstances presented by the pandemic, the LCLD did an exceptional job maintaining the integrity of the LCLD Fellows Program by coming up with creative and interactive ways to foster genuine engagement, offering robust and highly interactive formal sessions and fellows meetings, and providing multiple informal opportunities for

7
Agnes Doyle

Fellows to stay connected through leadership luncheons and virtual happy hours, speed networking, dine-arounds and receptions.

The formal sessions were more question-and-answer based, which afforded everyone an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations regarding the various topics discussed in a larger group setting, as well as in smaller breakout groups. We were assigned to small regional cohort groups comprising in-house counsel and law firm Fellows who also served as my accountability partners throughout the course of the program. This made it easier to connect with others and build relationships, share personal experiences, have honest conversations while tackling various topics related to the interplay between diversity and leadership, and – most importantly – holding each other accountable to take the necessary steps to achieve our professional goals and enhance our business development efforts. The virtual option also allowed for more flexibility to attend all the planned sessions because the sessions were recorded and made available to view later if work conflicts prevented us from attending the live sessions.

WI: Please share some takeaways and business development ideas you learned from the program.

Agnes: Throughout the course of the LCLD Fellows Program, we explored several business development strategies that allowed each Fellow to create realistic and tangible business development goals. A major takeaway was the realization that most business development efforts fail because they lack the proper foundation, which leads to several untapped business opportunities. As Fellows, we were challenged to look at “sales as an act of service” to build the proper foundation for engagement in effective business development. This entails having a genuine desire to build authentic relationships, suspending selfinterest and narrowing in on solving problems that should

be solved, and creating discipline and consistency in your relationship-building efforts. To achieve this, we were challenged to narrow in on what we each truly wanted to achieve professionally by targeting and aligning our interests, capabilities and opportunities to create an authentic business development plan and selecting the appropriate business development efforts.

Another takeaway was reconnection. While it is important to stay connected, it is never too late to reconnect. As Fellows, we explored reconnection with contacts using the “Three Ins” (invites, intros and insights) to create 60-day relationship plans that can help reestablish meaningful and authentic business relationships. Invites include a simple phone call, a virtual or in-person visit with you personally, and invites to firm events (such as educational programs and social events) and outside activities (such as industry and bar association programs and charitable and social events). Intros include facilitating business introductions for potential customers, clients or vendors and professional introductions for similarly situated individuals or organizations. Insights include offering observations about legal developments, market trends, and organizational and personal objectives while seeking insights on the same.

WI: Do you plan to participate in the Alumni Fellows program?

Agnes: Absolutely. Over the last 10 years, the LCLD Alumni Program has grown from a loose networking group into an organization with robust programming and networking opportunities for in-house and law firm alumni. I also plan on staying connected with my accountability partners from my regional cohort group, with whom I have built genuine relationships, as well as several other in-house counsel Fellows I had the pleasure of meeting throughout the course of the program.

First-Year Associates Participate in Accelerate Program

The Center for Women in Law (CWIL) at the University of Texas School of Law is the premier educational institution devoted to the success of the entire spectrum of women in law, from first-year law students to the most experienced and accomplished attorneys. It combines theory with practice, identifying and addressing the persistent issues facing individual women and the profession as a whole.

One of CWIL’s innovative offerings is the Accelerate Career Start program for first-year female associates. The goal of the program is to improve the retention of women lawyers who are starting their careers and strengthen the pipeline to partnership. It creates a unique opportunity for women associates to practice key skills that will accelerate the transition from law student to lawyer while developing strong and diverse networks outside of the law firm.

Highlight on Our Lawyers

Associate Amelia Occhino (WAS) was part of a team of corporate attorneys that advised Silvergate Capital on the company’s public offering of 8 million depositary shares, each representing 1/40th ownership interest in a share of its 5.375 percent, fixed-rate, non-cumulative perpetual preferred stock, Series A. The offering generated gross proceeds of $200 million.

Partner Stacy Blank and Associate Anne Kelley (both TPA) represented the city of Gainesville, Florida, and secured an order from Florida’s Eighth Judicial Circuit that granted its remittitur motion in Rodgers v. City of Gainesville. The order reduced the original $115 million pain and suffering award in the case to $13 million.

The curriculum complements a law firm’s existing orientation training program and enhances a new attorney’s first-year experience by providing various tools to successfully navigate her legal career. Accelerate participants receive year-long access to significant and personalized mentoring from CWIL. In addition, quarterly meetings reinforce information from the previously listed topics while providing a support community to discuss challenges, answer questions and offer real-time guidance as needed throughout the year. The roundtables, cofacilitated by an attorney coach, also serve as a foundation for building cohort networks.

Thompson & Knight was a founding supporter of Accelerate, and Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Nichole Olajuwon (HOU) speaks highly of the program. She shared, “What makes the Accelerate program special is that, in addition to its strong curriculum, it provides a safe place for first-year women lawyers to learn from their experiences and each other alongside industry experts whose mission is to help them succeed at their respective law firms.”

Based on Nichole’s endorsement and the strong positive feedback from past participants, the Women’s Initiative is making Accelerate available to all firm first-year female associates. The program is offered virtually this year, and 27 Holland & Knight attorneys are registered. We look forward to hearing from them about their experiences later this year.
