Open window to the world Een venster op de wereld
Met het voltooien van de bouw van het Lucent Danstheater in Den Haag werd in 1987 het tweejaarlijkse Holland Dance Festival opgericht. Vrijwel gelijktijdig ontstonden in Europa nog twee internationale dansbiënnales: La Biënnale de la Danse de Lyon (1986) en het Zwitserse intercityfestival Steps (1988). Anno 2015 bestaan de drie nog steeds en alle drie behoren zij al vele jaren tot de internationale top van dansfestivals. In de komende kunstenplanperiode, 2017–2020, gaat Holland Dance Festival dus zijn vierde decennium in en net zoals rond de oprichting van het festival het geval was, wordt in Den Haag wederom een nieuw en spraakmakend theatercomplex gebouwd. With the completion of the Lucent Danstheater in The Hague – the biannual Holland Dance Festival was founded in 1987. Almost at the same time two other international dance biennales started in Europe: La Biënnale de la Danse de Lyon (1986) and the Swiss intercityfestival Steps (1988). In 2015 all three still exist and all three have been in the international top of dance festivals for many years. In the next Arts Plan, 2017-2020, Holland Dance Festival will enter its fourth decennium and again a new, sensational theatre complex is being built, just like it was when the festival was founded.

"The line-up for this year’s festival is diverse and exciting" Holland Dance is in de afgelopen bijna dertig jaar doorgeroeid van festivalorganisatie naar dansorganisatie. Vanuit onze missie dat dans voor iedereen is, omvat onze corebusiness zowel de presentatie van internationale dansproducties – waarmee we een venster op de wereld bieden – als de organisatie van activiteiten op het gebied van educatie en amateurkunst om, aldus, mensen letterlijk in beweging te brengen (samenleving in beweging). Holland Dance spant zich in om dans zichtbaarder te maken en steviger te positioneren als onderscheidend cultuurkenmerk van de Nederlandse samenleving. Het programma van de festivaleditie 2016 telt vrijwel uitsluitend Nederlandse premières of zelfs wereldpremières, en biedt dus met recht een venster op de wereld. Naast de vele inleidingen op voorstellingen, meet-and-greets met kunstenaars, workshops en afterparties, verdienen twee rondetafelgesprekken een speciale vermelding. De eerste is gewijd aan ‘dans en leeftijd’, de andere aan dans die verbonden is aan culturele en etnische identiteit. De twee worden gepresenteerd onder de noemer ‘Ine-Rietstap-Lezing’, ter ere van de Nederlandse oud-danseres en zeer gewaardeerde dansjournaliste Ine Rietstap. Beide thema’s zijn, middels diverse producties in het hoofdprogramma, sterk vertegenwoordigd in het festival.
Almost thirty years have passed and Holland Dance has evolved from a festival organization into a dance organization. In keeping with our mission, that dance is for everyone, our core business includes the presentation of international dance productions – through which we offer a window to the world – as well as organizing activities in the realm of education and amateur dance that literally help to get people moving (humanity in motion). Holland Dance endeavours to make dance more visible and to reinforce itself as a distinctive cultural feature of Dutch society. For the edition 2016, a program was put together consisting nearly exclusively of Dutch or even world premiers: a true window to the world. Apart from introductions to performances, meet-and-greets with artists, workshops and afterparties, two round-table talks deserve a special mention. One is dedicated to dance and age, the other one to cultural and ethnic identity. They run under the label IneRietstap-Lezing, in honor of the dancer and esteemed Dutch dance writer. Both topics of the round tables are strongly represented with various productions in the main program. Holland Dance Festival and the Holland Dance organization are firmly embedded in the dance infrastructure of The Hague, international city of Dance, Peace and Justice. During the

Tijdens de festivalperiode treden we dit keer echter ook meer dan voorheen buiten de grenzen van onze thuisbasis, door voorstellingen in partnertheaters in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Groningen, Drachten, Tilburg, Heerlen te presenteren én in het nieuwe Holland Dance Festival-satelliettheater: Theater de Veste in Delft. Gezien onze inspanningen om een groter danspubliek te bereiken, waarderen we deze kans om met partners in het hele land te werken enorm.

De optredens van het Duitse Gauthier Dance vormden een van de hoogtepunten van het vorige Holland Dance Festival. Artistiek leider Eric Gauthier liet Nederland kennismaken met een van de aanstekelijke high-energy-compilatieprogramma’s waarmee zijn gezelschap Duitsland had veroverd. Maar Gauthier is er de man niet naar om lang voort te borduren op een en dezelfde succesformule en dus keert zijn groep nu terug met het avondvullende Alice van Italiaan Mauro Bigonzetti. Aan ‘power’ en magie doet Gauthier echter geen concessies: deze voorstelling is, zegt hij, net zo jong, gek en fris als de gemixte programma’s. “Alice is als een 3D-film die van het podium afspat.”
Strange characters Wonderlijke karakters
The performances of the German Gauthier Dance were one of the highlights of the last Holland Dance Festival. Artistic director Eric Gauthier introduced the Netherlands to one of the infectious high-energycompilation programs that helped his company conquer Germany. But Gauthier is not a man who likes to build on the same success formula for too long and so now his company returns with the full-length Alice by Italian Mauro Bigonzetti. But Gauthier does not compromise when it comes to power and magic: this performance is just as young, crazy and fresh as the compilation programs, he says. “Alice is like a 3D movie that jumps off the stage.” Tekst / Text Astrid van Leeuwen

Luisterend naar de voicemailboodschap van Eric Gauthier (38 jaar geleden geboren in Montreal) krijg je bijna als vanzelf een positieve ‘boost’. Gauthier ‘ademt’ levenslust, energie en een zekere mate van gekte, en dat is terug te zien in de voorstellingen van het gezelschap dat hij in 2008 oprichtte. ‘Bij zijn mooie groep dansers is hedendaagse dans een demonstratie van levensvreugde, vitaliteit, schoonheid en energie’, schreef NRC Handelsblad over het optreden van Gauthier Dance tijdens het vorige Holland Dance Festival.
When you listen to the voicemail message of Eric Gauthier (born in Montreal 38 years ago) you almost automatically get a positive boost. Gauthier ‘ breathes’ life force, energy and a certain degree of madness, and all this can be found in the performances of the company he founded in 2008. ‘In his beautiful group of dancers contemporary dance is a demonstration of joie de vivre, vitality, beauty and energy’ wrote NRC Handelsblad about the performance of Gauthier Dance during the previous edition of the Holland Dance Festival.
Met programma’s als ‘HIGH FIVE’, ‘SIX PACK’ en ‘LUCKY SEVEN’ belichtte Gauthier de afgelopen jaren vooral de ‘zonnige kant’ van de eigentijdse dans en dat was, vond hij, hard nodig. Zeker in een land als Duitsland, waar volgens hem té vaak de nadruk lag op “zware, intellectuele voorstellingen waarbij het publiek nou niet bepaald wordt uitgenodigd ook maar iets te snappen van wat er op het toneel gebeurt.”
With programs like ‘HIGH FIVE’, ‘ SIX PACK’ and ‘LUCKY SEVEN’ Gauthier mostly focused on the lighter sight of contemporary dance over the last years and he felt that was really necessary. Especially in a country like Germany where, according to him, too much emphasis is placed on “heavy, intellectual productions where the audience is not really expected to understand anything that is happening on stage.” He says that Gauthier Dance stands for exuberant, playful and accessible dance.“ Productions that allow people to understand what they see.” This is true even when the basis of such a production is a fairly complicated story like The Adventures of Alice in Wonderland by the British writer Lewis Carroll, a tale that even the always enthusiastic Gauthier could not immediately get excited about. “ I had asked Mauro Bigonzetti during a lunch in Italy to create a full-length production for Gauthier Dance. When Mauro indicated after some time that he was thinking about Alice in Wonderland I reacted quite strongly: ‘Oh no, why are you giving me a fairytale?!’ But Mauro quickly managed to persuade me. He said that Gauthier Dance consists of a collection of strange characters, just like Carroll’s book, who create magic together. He said: ‘You have a Cheshire Cat in your group, a Mad Hatter, a White Rabbit and two girls that represent both sides of Alice: sometimes strong, courageous and wise, sometimes scared, childish and instinctive.’ And he was right, especially when it comes to the doubling of the part of Alice. One dancer is

Toen Mauro enige tijd daarna aangaf dat hij een ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in gedachten had, reageerde ik nogal heftig: ‘O nee, waarom geef je me een sprookje?!’ Maar Mauro wist me al snel te overtuigen. Hij zei dat Gauthier Dance eigenlijk net als Carolls boek een verzameling wonderlijke karakters telt, die met elkaar magie creëren. Hij zei: ‘Je hebt een Kolderkat in je groep, een Gekke Hoedenmaker, een Wit Konijn en twee meisjes die de beide kanten in Alice vertegenwoordigen: soms sterk, moedig en verstandig, soms bangig, kinderlijk en instinctief.’ En hij had gelijk,

big, the other is small, just like Alice alternately shrinks and grows in the story. Sometimes one Alice is the shadow of the other and at the end one of them stays behind in Wonderland as the other returns to the normal world.”

Fantastic fashion show
Fantastische fashionshow Eenmaal overtuigd, kreeg Bigonzetti geheel de vrije hand. Gauthier: “Dat is juist ook de reden waarom veel choreografen met Gauthier Dance willen werken: of ze nu een spitzenballet op Bach willen maken of een blotevoetenstuk op rockmuziek, ik laat ze alle vrijheid en beschouw elke creatie als een groot cadeau.” Bigonzetti besloot om voor Alice (spreek uit op zijn Italiaans: ‘Aliétsje’) opnieuw te kiezen voor live muziek van Assurd, het Italiaanse vrouwentrio dat met zijn rauwe, volkse zang zo’n bijzondere bijdrage leverde aan Bigonzetti’s Cantata, het succesvolle slotstuk van de Gauthier Dance-optredens tijdens het vorige Holland Dance Festival. Gauthier: “Behalve met gastmusicus Enza Pagliara, die ook al meespeelde bij Cantata, werkt Assurd nu voor het eerst samen met componist en multi-instrumentalist Antongiulio Galeandro en de combinatie van die vijf is wáánzinnig.” Ook van het werk van kostuumontwerpster Helena de Medeiros is Gauthier diep onder de indruk: “Haar verfijnde en tegelijkertijd zeer extravagante kostuums bepalen misschien wel een derde van het enorme succes van Alice. De productie oogt op veel momenten als een fantastische fashionshow. Tel daar de geweldige videobeelden van Carlo Cerri bij op en je hebt het gevoel dat je naar een 3D-film kijkt die als het ware van het podium afspat.”
Kracht van de verbeelding Maar het meest geraakt wordt Gauthier door de choreografie van Mauro Bigonzetti, die voor hem ‘de Auguste Rodin van onze tijd’ is. “Het mooie is

Once convinced, Bigonzetti could do what he wanted. Gauthier: “This is precisely the reason why so many choreographers want to work with Gauthier Dance: whether they wish to make a ballet with pointe work to Bach or a barefoot piece to rock music, I give them all the freedom they need and consider each creation a great gift.” For Alice (pronounced as in Italian: ‘Aliétsje’) Bigonzetti once again decided to choose live music by Assurd, the Italian female trio that with its raw, folk singing added something so special to Bigonzetti’s Cantata, the successful final piece of the Gauthier Dance performances during the last edition of Holland Dance Festival. Gauthier: “Apart from guest musician Enza Pagliara, who also played in Cantata, Assurd now, for the first time works together with composer and multiinstrumentalist Antongiulio Galeandro and the combination of those five people is mesmerizing.” Gauthier is also deeply impressed with the work of costume designer Helena de Medeiros: “Her exquisite and simultaneously very extravagant costumes possibly account for a third of the enormous success of Alice. At many moments the production looks like a fantastic fashion show. Add to that the magnificent video images of Carlo Cerri and you have the feeling that you’re watching a 3D movie that jumps off the stage.”
Power of the imagination But Gauthier is especially moved by Mauro Bigonzetti’s choreography, whom he considers to ‘the Auguste Rodin of our time’. “The beauty is that he tells the story of Alice in Wonderland as he remembers it from his childhood, the way it affected him then. So he doesn’t tell

Het gaat hem veel meer om de kracht van de verbeelding, en daarin weet hij iedereen mee te slepen.” Gauthier is ‘super happy’ dat zijn groep met Alice weer optreedt op het Holland Dance Festival. “Het festival heeft op internationaal niveau veel deuren voor ons geopend. We zijn op tournee geweest door de Verenigde Staten en hebben daarbij onder meer opgetreden tijdens het prestigieuze Jacob’s Pillow-festival; afgelopen oktober dansten we Alice in Bangkok en voor volgend jaar staan onder meer optredens in New York en Canada gepland.” Wie Gauthier Dance tijdens het vorige Holland Dance Festival niet zag, moet, vindt Gauthier, zeker komen, maar ook degenen die de groep wél zagen kunnen met Alice rekenen op een verrassing. “Deze voorstelling is volstrekt anders dan alles wat je bij Alice in Wonderland, Gauthier Dance of überhaupt een dansoptreden zou verwachten. Misschien dat de productie nog het best te omschrijven valt als een uitzinnigefashionshow en Fellini-film ineen.”

Maybe the production is best described as a combination of a delirious fashion show and a Fellini-film.”

In de internationale pers laaide dit jaar de discussie over de ‘zwarte danser’ weer flink op. Of liever: over het gebrek aan de zwarte danser bij gevestigde westerse dansgezelschappen. Om de discussie te voeden én hopelijk bij te dragen aan een mentaliteitsverandering presenteert Holland Dance Festival het Nederlandse debuut van Ballet Black en Abraham.In.Motion, twee groepen die op heel verschillende wijze de zwarte identiteit centraal stellen.
Black is beautiful This year the debate about the ‘black dancer’ was passionately reopened in the international press. Or rather: about the lack of black dancers in established western dance companies. To feed the discussion and hopefully to contribute to a change in mentality, Holland Dance Festival presents the Dutch debut of Ballet Black and Abraham. In.Motion. Two groups that put black identity at the heart of what they are doing each, in their own way.

Bij Het Nationale Ballet hebben ze momenteel een probleem. Michaela DePrince, de enige zwarte danseres in het gezelschap, gaat in Notenkraker en Muizenkoning de rol van de volwassen Clara dansen. Maar op de Nationale Balletacademie hebben ze geen kleine zwarte Clara, terwijl gebruikelijk is dat de twee danseressen uiterlijk op elkaar lijken. Voor Cassa Pancho, oprichtster en artistiek leidster van het Britse Ballet Black, is het Nederlandse voorbeeld de zoveelste bevestiging van waar ze zich al sinds 2001 mee bezighoudt: “Zwarte kinderen zien in de balletwereld te weinig rolmodellen. Omdat er nauwelijks zwarte dansers zijn, worden zij niet geprikkeld om voor een balletcarrière te kiezen.” Zelf heeft Pancho een lichte huid, maar haar uit Trinidad afkomstige vader is zwart. “Vandaar mijn fascinatie. Als leerling van de Royal Academy of Dance viel het mij al op hoe weinig zwarte dansers er zijn. Daarom ben ik na mijn afstuderen Ballet Black gestart, en een jaar later heb ik ook de Ballet Black Junior School opgericht.”
In de rij Ballet Black trekt in Engeland veel aandacht en krijgt tegenwoordig de ene na de andere jubelende recensie. Momenteel telt het gezelschap acht dansers, onder wie ook een Japanse, want, zegt Pancho: “Ook Aziatische dansers verdienen meer kansen, al is de positie van de zwarte danser nog wel steeds veel penibeler.” Choreografen staan in de rij om met de groep te werken. Pancho: “Alle werken op ons repertoire zijn speciaal voor ons gemaakt. Balletchoreografen van de grote gezelschappen vinden het fijn om ook eens met een klein ensemble te kunnen werken, meer één op één, terwijl eigentijdse choreografen de kans aangrijpen om creaties op spitzen te maken.” Hoe begaan ze met de positie van de zwarte danser zijn, verschilt per maker, zegt Pancho lachend. “Sommigen willen ons echt moreel

But there is no little black Clara at the National Ballet Academy and it is customary that the two dancers physically resemble each other. For Cassa Pancho, the founder and artistic director of the British Ballet Black the Dutch example is another confirmation of what she has been dealing with since 2001: “Black children see too few role models in the world of ballet. Because there are almost no black dancers they are not encouraged to choose a career in ballet.” Pancho is fair skinned herself but her Trinidadian father is black. “That’s where my fascination comes from. As a student of the Royal Academy of Dance I already noticed how few black dancers there are. That’s why I founded Ballet Black after I graduated, and a year later I also founded the Ballet Black Junior School.”
In line Ballet Black currently gets a lot of attention in England and receives one raving review after another. At the moment the company consists of eight dancers, including one Japanese, because as Pancho states: “Asian dancers also deserve more opportunities although the position of black dancers is still more dire.” Choreographers are lining up to work with the company. Pancho: “All the pieces in our repertoire are specially created for us. Ballet choreographers of the larger companies enjoy working with smaller companies from time to time; it’s more one on one. Whereas contemporary choreographers embrace the opportunity to create point work.” Their commitment to the struggle of black dancers is different for every maker says Pancho as she smiles. “Some really want to support us morally while others just want to choreograph as much as possible.” That the Dutch debut of Ballet Black – coincidentally – completely consists of work by white choreographers underlines

steunen, anderen willen simpelweg zoveel mogelijk choreograferen.” Dat het Nederlandse debuut van Ballet Black – toevalligerwijs – enkel uit werk van blanke choreografen bestaat, onderstreept volgens Pancho alleen maar de ernst van de zaak. “Als er amper zwarte balletdansers zijn, is er natuurlijk ook geen overvloed aan zwarte balletchoreografen.”
‘Hottest’ dansmakers Maar de drie blanke makers vormen wel het puikje van het eigentijdse Britse ballet. Van Will Tuckett (werkzaam voor zowel The Royal Ballet als English National Ballet) wordt Depouillement gedanst, op muziek van Ravel. Pancho: “Een neoklassiek muziekballet dat in twintig minuten naar een spetterende finale toewerkt en dat – onbedoeld, maar zo prachtig– Balanchines credo ‘see the music, hear the dance’ tot uiting brengt.” Kit Holder (danser/choreograaf bij The Birmingham Royal Ballet) tekende voor To Fetch a Pail of Water, waarvoor hij zich liet inspireren door Jack and Jill, een Engels kinderliedje. “De vragen in dat liedje betrekt Kit op een relatie en de strubbelingen daarin. Eerst liep die relatie stuk, maar Kit heeft de volgorde van de scènes veranderd, zodat het subtiel humoristische duet nu een happy end kent.” Meest recent op het Ballet Black-repertoire is A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream van Arthur Pita, een van de ‘hottest’ dansmakers van dit moment, die vorig jaar nog een duet voor sterdansers Natalia Osipova en Ivan Vasiliev creëerde. “Arthurs choreografie is een dolkomische, eigentijdse interpretatie van Shakespeares toneelstuk, waarbij Puck nog meer dan in het origineel alles in het honderd laat lopen. ‘Hottest’ dance makers But the three white makers are the cream of the crop of contemporary British ballet. From Will Tucket (working for both The Royal Ballet and the English National Ballet) Depouillement is performed set to music by Ravel. Pancho: “A neoclassical music ballet that takes twenty minutes to build towards a stunning finale and that – unintentionally but so splendidly – expresses Balanchine’s credo ‘see the music, hear the dance’.” Kit Holder (dancer/choreographer with The Birmingham Royal Ballet) created To Fetch a Pail of Water where he allowed himself to be inspired by Jack and Jill, an English children’s song. “Kit relates the questions posed in that song to a relationship and its troubles. First the relationship broke down but Kit changed the order of the scenes so that the mildly amusing duet now has a happy ending.” The most recent addition to the Ballet Black repertory is A Dream Within A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Arthur Pita, one of the ‘hottest’ dance maker of the moment, who only last year created a duet for star soloists Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev. “Arthur’s choreography is a hilarious, modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s play in which Puck is allowed to sabotage everything even more than in the original. It is Arthur’s first choreography for point work.” Pancho fervently hopes that her company will prove to be redundant in the future. “I give it twenty years but secretly hope that it will be ten.” The news that this year Mitsy Copeland was appointed principal of the American Ballet Theatre and the fact that Michaela DePrince does so well with Het Nationale Ballet is obviously something that Pancho applauds. “But”, she

‘Blown away’ Amerikaan Kyle Abraham, die met zijn groep Abraham.In.Motion in het Holland Dance Festival staat, zegt, in heel andere bewoordingen, eigenlijk hetzelfde. “Niet alles is opeens oké nu Amerika een zwarte president heeft. Het blijft nodig om de positie van de zwarte mens in onze samenleving ter discussie te stellen, om – zoals ik met mijn productie Pavement doe – vragen op te werpen.”
‘Blown away’
Abraham speelde in zijn tienerjaren piano en cello en was geïnteresseerd in beeldende kunst. “Dansen deed ik alleen in clubs en tijdens ‘raves’. Thuis had ik daar de ruimte niet voor.” Op zijn zestiende zag hij zijn eerste dansvoorstelling: Billboards van het Joffrey Ballet. “Ik ging alleen maar omdat het een productie op muziek van Prince was en ik een enorme Prince-fan ben. Maar ik was ‘blown away’. Wow, dat dít bestond!” Abraham ging moderne dans studeren, met name Graham- en Cunninghamtechniek, en werd daarnaast vooral geraakt door de ‘enorme flow en snelheid’ en de ‘ronde, van gyrotonics afgeleide bewegingen’ van zijn docent Kevin Wynn, die, zegt hij, “nog steeds van grote invloed op mijn werk is.” Inmiddels heeft de nu 38-jarige Abraham choreografieën gemaakt voor onder meer het prestigieuze Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, maar bijvoorbeeld ook een duet voor hem en topballerina Wendy Whelan. “Ik ben

It is still necessary to question the position that people of color have in our society, like I do with my production Pavement.” In his teens Abraham played the piano and the cello and was interested in visual arts. “I only danced in clubs and during raves I had no space to do that at home.” When he was sixteen he saw his first dance performance: Billboards by the Joffrey Ballet. ´I only went because the production was set to the music of Prince and I was a huge Prince fan. But I was blown away. Wow, that something like this existed!” After that Abraham studied contemporary dance, especially Graham and Cunningham techniques and was apart from that mostly moved by the enormous flow and speed and the round movements that were derived from gyrotonics of his teacher Kevin Wynn who, as he puts it, “still has a big influence on my work.” Meanwhile the 38 year old Abraham has made choreographies for the prestigious Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, among others, but he

Tijdcapsule Zijn productie Pavement wordt wel ‘een herverbeelding in dans’ genoemd van Boyz N The Hood, de beroemde film van John Singleton over het leven in de zwarte wijken van Los Angeles, die Abraham als veertienjarige zag. “Voor mij is die film een tijdcapsule die alles wat er destijds speelde omvat: misdaad, zwarten die andere zwarten omleggen, hiv, aids, buitensporig cracken cocaïnegebruik, de enorme zelfhaat binnen de Afro-Amerikaanse cultuur.” In zijn geboortestad Pittsburgh was dat niet anders. “Dit is ook míjn realiteit.” Pavement vertelt het filmverhaal dan ook niet één op één na, maar gaat vooral over Abrahams eigen ervaringen, over het opgroeien in Pittsburgh en over het feit dat er de afgelopen eeuw eigenlijk zo bitter weinig veranderd is. “Dat besef je wanneer je bijvoorbeeld The Souls of Black Folk van W.E.B. DuBois leest, uit 1903, dat ook als inspiratiebron diende.” Pavement is in de Amerikaanse pers omstandig geprezen en een ‘must-see’ genoemd. Niet in de laatste plaats vanwege Abrahams rijke bewegingstaal waarin moderne dans en urbanstijlen moeiteloos versmelten, ook al is hij daar niet bewust op uit. “Ik denk dat mijn dans verraadt dat ik vroeger vaak in clubs danste, maar ik verwerk er niet opzettelijk hiphopelementen in of zoiets.” De vraag hoezeer de productie politiek geladen is, wil hij liever niet beantwoorden. “Dat laat ik aan de toeschouwer over.” Maar, zegt hij er schertsend achteraan: “Ik ben een ‘gay black American’, dus wat denk je?!” Hoe dan ook is Pavement beslist niet alleen maar ‘zwaar’. “Er is zoveel om je door mee te laten slepen: pure dans, tekst, theater, filmbeelden, uiteenlopende muziek van Bach tot blues tot hiphop. Misschien dat een enkeling gedeprimeerd zal raken door het beeld dat ik schets, maar ik denk dat veel meer mensen er geïnspireerd door zullen raken.”

Time capsule His production Pavement is sometimes called ‘a re-imagination in dance’ of Boyz N The Hood, John Singleton’s famous movie about life in the black suburbs of Los Angeles that Abraham saw when he was fourteen. “To me that movie is a time capsule that holds everything that was happening then: crime, black on black violence, hiv, aids, excessive crack and cocaine use, the enormous self-hatred within the Afro-American culture.” In his hometown Pittsburgh things were no different. “This is also my reality.”
Pavement therefore does not tell the whole story of the movie but is predominately about Abraham’s own experiences growing up in Pittsburgh and about the fact that so little has changed in the past century. “You realize this for instance when you read The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois from 1903, which also served as a source of inspiration.” Pavement has been praised in the American press and called a must-see. This is also due to Abraham’s rich movement language where contemporary dance and urban styles are effortlessly combined, even if he is not consciously trying to do so. “I think my dance shows that I used to dance a lot in clubs, but I don’t really add hip-hop elements deliberately.” He would rather not answer the question about the political charge of the production. “I leave that to the viewer.” But he adds jokingly: “I am a gay black American, so what do you think?! In any case Pavement is certainly not just serious. “There is so much that can carry you away: pure dance, text, theatre, film images, music ranging from Bach to blues to hip-hop. Maybe some people will get depressed by the vision I create but I think far more people will become inspired by it.”

Not bound by age Niet aan leeftijd gebonden Als meesterchoreograaf Jirí Kylián zich, terugkijkend op zijn carrière, over één ding boos maakt, is het wel dat NDT3 – het door hem opgerichte ensemble voor 40+dansers – in 2006 werd wegbezuinigd. Gelukkig echter is de boodschap die de groep zo overtuigend heeft uitgedragen níet verloren gegaan: oudere dansers raken je op een unieke manier, hun zeggingskracht neemt met de jaren veelal alleen maar toe. In Duitsland leidde dat dit jaar tot de oprichting van 40+-gezelschap Dance On, dat tijdens het Holland Dance Festival zijn allereerste voorstelling geeft. Ook organiseerde het festival Good [old] Times, een project dat begon als een serie workshops voor 55+-ers, maar nu uitmondt in een bijzondere festivalvoorstelling. If master choreographer Jirí Kylián is upset about one thing, whilst looking back on his career, it’s the fact that NDT3 – the ensemble for 40+ dancers that was founded by him, was dissolved in 2006 due to cutbacks. Fortunately the compelling message that the ensemble was promoting has not been lost: older dancers touch you in a unique way, their powers of expression generally increase as they get older. In Germany this led to the establishment of 40+ company Dance On that will premier its very first production during the Holland Dance Festival. The festival also organized Good [old] Times, a project that started as a series of workshops for seniors over the age of 55 that will now culminate in an extraordinary festival performance. Als programmeur en festivaldirecteur presenteerde Madeline Ritter al flink wat jaren dansproducties, toen ze ergens in de jaren negentig in het Pictures of (e)Motion-festival in Bonn een voorstelling van NDT3 bracht. Lachend: “Mijn vader kwam, als zo vaak, kijken en zei: ‘Dit noem ik nu pas écht dans. Dit moet je vaker doen’.” Hoewel ze het achteraf volledig met hem eens is, had ze toen nog niet kunnen denken dat ze ooit zelf een 40+-ensemble zou beginnen. “Dat stond niet op mijn agenda, maar het móést gewoon gebeuren.” Twee aanleidingen droegen daaraan bij. “Samen met mijn teammedewerker Riccarda Herre bezocht ik een galavoorstelling rond de uitreiking van de Duitse TanzPreis en op de terugweg raakten we maar niet uitgepraat over één duet. We werden, beseften we, diep getroffen door de lading die de twee oudere dansers eraan wisten te geven. Voorts zag ik in korte tijd drie keer Hans van Manens fantastische The Old Man and Me, dat hier in Duitsland bijna een standaardwerk aan het worden is voor de oudere danser. Dat maakte iets bij me los, ik dacht: dit soort dansers verdient toch een veel groter repertoire.”
As a programmer and festival director Madeline Ritter had presented many dance productions over the years when sometime during the nineties she brought a production of NDT3 to the Pictures of (e)Motion-festival in Bonn. Smiling: “My father came to see the performance, as he often did, and said: ‘Now this is what I call real dance. You should do this more often’.” Although she completely agrees with him in hindsight, she could never have imagined that she herself would someday put together a 40+ ensemble. “It was not on my to do list but it simply had to be done.”
En zo kwam Ritter (56) ertoe om een plan uit te werken voor Dance On, een platform voor de 40+-danser, dat naast een professioneel gezelschap – het Dance On Ensemble – ook amateurprojecten, een onderzoeksafdeling en een festival omvat. “Om de Duitse overheid over te halen het plan te steunen, vroeg ik alle grote Duitse dansgezelschappen om een aanbevelingsbrief. Die schreven ze én meer, want Christopher Roman, associate director van The Forsythe Company, meldde zich. Hij wilde meedoen, en is nu de eerste artistiek directeur van het Dance On Ensemble.”
There were two main reasons that contributed to her decision. “I was at a gala performance surrounding the awards ceremony of the German TanzPreis with a member of my team Riccarda Herre and on the way back we could not stop talking about one particular duet. We realized that we were deeply moved by the intensity that was created by the two older dancers. I also saw Hans van Manen’s wonderful The Old Man and Me three times over a short period of time. A piece that has almost become standard work for older dancers here in Germany. That stirred something in me, I thought: these kind of dancers really deserve a much bigger repertoire.” And so Ritter (56) developed a plan for Dance On, a platform for the 40+ dancer, that apart from a professional ensemble – the Dance On Ensemble – also encompasses amateur projects, a research department and a festival. “In order to convince the German government to fund the plan I asked all the major German dance companies for recommendations. They supplied those and more, because Christopher Roman, associate director of The Forsythe Company became interested. He wanted to participate and is now the first artistic director of the Dance On Ensemble.”

zijn overgebleven. Onder hen Ty Boomershine en Amancio Gonzalez, twee dansers die hun sporen in Nederland ruim hebben verdiend. Ritter: “Behalve op hun persoonlijkheid, zelfbewustzijn en artistieke raffinement hebben we de dansers ook beoordeeld op hun motivatie. We zochten mensen die er volledig voor willen gaan, die met elkaar in dit grote avontuur willen stappen.” Hoewel Ritter zich uit de NDT3-tijd voldoende pareltjes kan herinneren die ze op het repertoire van Dance On zou willen zien, kiest de groep heel bewust voor nieuwe creaties, gemaakt op en met de dansers. “Voor de dansers is dat een belangrijk deel van de uitdaging: na jarenlang vaak als ‘instrument’ voor anderen te hebben gediend, krijgen ze nu bij elke productie een grote inbreng. Ze hebben daar de leeftijd ook voor, de leeftijd om zich in alle vrijheid te kunnen uiten.” Dat Dance On zijn eerste voorstelling niet in Duitsland, maar tijdens het Holland Dance Festival danst, ligt, zegt Ritter, geheel aan de doortastendheid van festivaldirecteur Samuel Wuersten. “Hij belde mij nog voordat we überhaupt dansers of choreografen hadden aangenomen. Blijkbaar heeft hij zoveel vertrouwen in ons initiatief dat hij deze ‘blind date’-uitnodiging aandurfde.” In Den Haag presenteert Dance On 7 Dialogues, een programma waarvoor de dansers ieder een samenwerking aangaan met hun choreografische ‘droompartner’. Ritter, met een knipoog: “Jammergenoeg konden we niet álle dromen realiseren: één danser wilde werken met de Spaanse filmregisseur Pedro Almodóvar, maar hoe vereerd deze zich ook voelde, hij zag zichzelf niet als choreograaf.” Uiteindelijk zijn de dansers/choreografenduo’s Ami Shulman/Etienne Guilloteau, Ty Boomershine/Beth Gill, Joné San Martin/ Tim Etchells, Amancio Gonzalez/Hetain Patel, Brit Rodemund/Lucy Suggate en Christopher Roman/Ivo Dimchev. Ritter: “Ieder koppel

chosen. Among them are Ty Boomershine and Amancio Gonzalez, two dancers who have extensive experience in the Netherlands. Ritter: “Apart from their personality, selfawareness and artistic sophistication we also judged dancers on their motivation. We were looking for people who were willing to commit completely and who wanted to step into this big adventure together.” Although Ritter can remember many gems from the NDT3 period that she would like to add to the repertory of Dance On, the ensemble intentionally chooses new creations that are made for and by the dancers. “For the dancers it’s an important part of the challenge: after often being used as an ‘ instrument’ for others they now have major input in the production. They are at that age, the age where they can express themselves freely.” The fact that Dance On will dance its first performance during the Holland Dance Festival and not in Germany is entirely due to the determination of festival director Samuel Wuersten, according to Ritter. “He called me before we even had hired dancers or choreographers. Apparently he has such confidence in our initiative that he wasn’t afraid to extend this ‘blind date’ invitation.” In The Hague Dane On will present 7 Dialogues a program where the dancers each collaborate with their choreographic ‘dream partner’. Ritter, with a wink: “Unfortunately not all dreams could come true: one of the dancers wanted to work with Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar, but although he felt very honored he did not see himself as a choreographer.” In the end the dancers/choreographers duos are Ami Shulman/Etienne Guilloteau, Ty Boomershine/Beth Gill, Joné San Martin/ Tim Etchells, Amancio Gonzalez/Hetain Patel, Brit Rodemund/Lucy Suggate and Christopher Roman/Ivo Dimchev. Inmiddels hebben ook andere prestigieuze buitenlandse theaters en -dansinstellingen grote belangstelling voor Dance On getoond. Ritter: “Het zou mooi zijn als we uiteindelijk tot één overkoepelende Europese organisatie zouden kunnen komen.”
Emotions
Emoties Net als Ritter waren ook Julia Wielstra en Jozef Sloots grote NDT3-fans. Wielstra: “De dansers waren, door hun leeftijd, technisch minder explosief dan hun jongere collega’s, maar juist door die ‘ingetogenheid’ kon je eigenlijk nog veel beter zien op wat een enorme techniek en ervaring zij konden bogen.” Sloots: “Ze konden veel duidelijker dan jonge dansers emoties voor het voetlicht brengen en bewezen wat ik allang vond: je bent nooit te oud om te dansen.” Wielstra (56) en Sloots (79) namen begin 2015 deel aan de door Holland Dance georganiseerde 55+-dansworkshops Good [old] Times. Toen ze enkele maanden later hoorden dat het project een vervolg zou krijgen in de vorm van een voorstelling van choreografenduo Isabelle Chaffaud en Jérôme Meyer, waren ze er meteen bij. Sloots: “Het is zo interessant om mee te maken hoe een choreografie tot stand komt, zo’n kans grijp ik direct aan.” Beiden zijn late starters. Wielstra danst sinds haar zevenentwintigste. “Ik heb onder meer Balinese, oriëntaalse en Afrikaanse dans gedaan en de laatste jaren ook zumbalessen gevolgd. Voor mij is dans vooral plezier, ontspanning. Ik dans omdat ik er veel energie van krijg.” Sloots is 25 jaar geleden – op zijn vierenvijftigste dus – met dansen begonnen en heeft zich sindsdien ontwikkeld tot, zoals hij het zelf noemt, improvisatiedanser. Inmiddels heeft

Just like Ritter Julia Wielstra and Jozef Sloots were huge fans of NDT3. Wielstra: “The dancers were, due to their age, technically less explosive than their younger colleagues but precisely because of that ‘restraint’ you could far better observe the enormous technique and experience that they had.” Sloots: “They were able to express emotions far more clearly than the younger dancers and they proved what I thought all along: you are never too old to dance.” Wielstra (56) and Sloots (79) took part in the 55+ dance workshops Good [old] Times that Holland Dance organized at the beginning of 2015. When they heard a few months later that the project would be continued in the form of a production by choreographer duo Isabelle Chaffaud and Jérôme Meyer they immediately joined. Sloots: “It’s so interesting to experience how a choreography is created, I immediately jump at such a chance.” Both are late starters. Wielstra has been dancing since she was twenty-seven. “I took Balinese, Oriental and African dance and also Zumba lessons in the last years. For me dance is mostly for pleasure and relaxation. I dance because it gives me a lot of energy.” Sloots started dancing 25 years ago – so when he was fifty-four – and has since developed into, as he calls it, an improvisational dancer. Now he has quite the resume. He has worked in productions with among others Anouk van Dijk, Twyla Tharp and Krisztina de Châtel and a Holland Dance-project for able bodied and disabled dancing. And during the CaDance-festival of 2011 he performed a solo that he choreographed himself. “I love to improvise. Even when I dance salsa

Zelfs als ik salsa dans, probeer ik een danspartner te vinden die mij een beetje mijn eigen gang laat gaan, al ben ik er tegelijkertijd juist erg op gericht om die ander tot haar recht te laten komen. Vaststaande pasjes leren is lastig voor mij, een soort blinde vlek. Ook daarom vind ik het interessant om mee te doen aan Good [old] Times. Ik wil die blinde vlek een beetje weg proberen te poetsen.”
Gek doen Ze hebben pas twee repetities met Chaffaud en Meyer achter de rug, dus kunnen nog niet inschatten hoe de voorstelling zich zal ontwikkelen. Wielstra: “Isabelle is heel spontaan, heel warm. Ze wil heel veel vertellen; Jérôme zet daar regelmatig de stop op.” Sloots: “Ik heb nog geen idee wat ze uit ons willen halen.” Wielstra: “Ze willen in elk geval dat je het nodige van jezelf laat zien. Dat je in je bewegingen ook eigen emoties legt.” Sloots: “Tijdens de laatste repetities moesten we allemaal zo gek mogelijk doen.” Wielstra, bescheiden over haar eigen inbreng: “Niet iedereen is daar goed in.” Sloots, geruststellend: “Maar dat is juist het mooie: iedereen doet gek op zijn of haar manier.”
I try to find a dance partner that lets me do my own thing, even though at the same time I am very focused on letting that person shine. It is hard for me to learn set steps, a kind of blind spot. That’s also why I find it interesting to participate in Good [old] Times. I want to try an eliminate that blind spot.”
Acting crazy They have only had two rehearsals with Chaffaud and Meyer so they cannot really assess yet how the production will develop. Wielstra: Isabelle is very spontaneous, very warm. She wants to talk a great deal; Jérôme often puts a stop to that.” Sloots: “I have no idea yet what they want to get from us.” Wielstra: “In any case they want us to show ourselves. That you also put your own emotion in your movements.” Sloots: “During the last rehearsals we had to act as crazy as possible.” Wielstra, modest about her own input: “Not everyone is good at that.” Sloots, comforting: “But that is the beauty of it, everyone is crazy in their own way.” Both cannot imagine that there will be a time that they don’t dance. Wielstra: “No, there is no age limit to dancing. I regularly go out and dance in the music venue Paard van Troje in The Hague. You just have to do it: keep moving, keep having fun.” Sloots: “I am an architect by trade and consider dance a continuation of that. By dancing I can keep using the space. If it were up to me I would be still be moving in my coffin.”
Beiden kunnen zich niet voorstellen dat er een tijd komt dat ze niet meer zullen dansen. Wielstra: “Nee, er zit geen leeftijdslimiet op dansen. Ik ga ook nog regelmatig dansen in het Haagse Paard van Troje. Je moet het gewoon doen: doorgaan met bewegen, met plezier hebben.” Sloots: “Ik ben van huis uit architect en zie de dans eigenlijk als een voortzetting daarvan. Door te dansen kan ik de ruimte blijven gebruiken. Als het mij gegeven is, denk ik dat ik in mijn doodskist nog zal bewegen.”

At the Source of Inspiration Gala you can stimulate your senses by the best the festival has to offer. We guarantee you will want to see more. The Russian superballerina Diana Vishneva will give a guest performance. You will also see brand new work by one of Dutch best known choreographers Hans van Manen. DANCE ON beschikte nog niet over choreografen of dansers toen Holland Dance Festival het kersverse Duitse gezelschap al uitnodigde om in het festival op te treden. De groep is, net als destijds Jiří Kyliáns NDT3, voortgekomen uit het besef dat dansers op leeftijd over unieke expressieve én fysieke kwaliteiten beschikken. In het eerste DANCE ON-programma brengen initiatiefneemster Madeline Ritter en artistiek leider Christopher Roman (voorheen associate director van The Forsythe Company) de zes dansers van het gezelschap samen met hun favoriete choreograaf. De zes dialogen die daaruit voortkomen, worden vervolgens tot één grote zevende dialoog verwerkt.
DANCE ON had not even selected choreographers or dancers when the festival invited this brand new German company to perform. This 40+ ensemble evolved, just like Jiří Kyliáns NDT3 in the past, from the realization that older dancers have specific expressive and physical qualities. In their first production, program initiator Madeline Ritter and artistic director Christopher Roman couple the six dancers of the company with six choreographers/theater makers whose unique contemporary voices resonate strongly with the dancers’ artistic strengths. Wat begon als een serie workshops voor 55+-ers in samenwerking met Grey Vibes, mondde uit in een bijzondere voorstelling Good [old] Times. Holland Dance nodigde choreografenduo Chaffaud & Meyer uit om een nieuwe creatie te maken voor een groep 55+ dansers. Het duo: "De gevoeligheid en het plezier van een dansende ziel is tijdloos. Dans is adem, en zolang er adem is, is er dans in iemands lichaam en ziel, ongeacht diens leeftijd. My tasteful life draait om het ouder worden, en de ups en downs die daarbij horen. De performers reflecteren op hun verlangens, hun teleurstellingen, hun kwetsbaarheid, maar laten ook hun vitale energie zien die schuilt in liefde. Ze vechten tegen het veronderstelde idee dat we onzichtbaar worden als we ouder worden." What started off as a series of workshops for seniors over the age of 55, has resulted in an extraordinary performance Good [old] Times. Holland Dance invited choreographers Chaffaud & Meyer to create a new work for a group of senior dancers. Chaffaud & Meyer: "The sensibility and the pleasure of a dancing soul is timeless. Dance is a breath and as long as there is breath, there is a dance in one’s body and in one’s soul regardless of its age. My tasteful life revolves around getting older and the ups-and-downs of aging. The performers reflect on their desires, their disappointments, vulnerabilities, but also show the vital energy behind love and fight the preconceived idea that we become invisible as we age."

Somos, ‘Wij zijn’ in het Spaans, brengt beide associate choreographers en beide huischoreografen van Nederlands Dans Theater in één programma samen: Crystal Pite, Marco Goecke, Sol León en Paul Lightfoot. Op heel eigen wijze demonstreren zij ieder de verstrekkende veelzijdigheid van de NDT-dansers. Pite is sinds 2008 aan NDT verbonden, Goecke sinds 2014. Beiden maken voor Somos een nieuwe creatie. Het programma wordt aangevuld met twee toonaangevende werken uit het omvangrijke oeuvre van huischoreografen Sol León en Paul Lightfoot: Same Difference (2007) en Shoot the Moon (2006). Somos, ‘ We are’ in Spanish, brings together the two associate choreographers and both choreographers in residence of Nederlands Dans Theater in one single program: Crystal Pite, Marco Goecke, Sol León and Paul Lightfoot. In their own special way they each demonstrate the extensive versatility of the NDT-dancers. Since 2008 Pite has been connected to NDT as associate choreographer, Goecke since 2014. They are both presenting new works for Somos. De National Ballet School in Toronto, Canada, is een van de topdansopleidingen in de wereld. De school leverde al veel beroemdheden af, onder wie diverse (oud-)solisten van Het Nationale Ballet. De laatste jaren is de school ook bekend vanwege de door haar georganiseerde Assemblée Internationale, een ontmoeting tussen dansacademies van over de hele wereld. Holland Dance Festival nodigt nu op zijn beurt de school uit om kennis te maken met het Nederlandse danserfgoed én de belangrijkste dansopleidingen in ons land: de Nationale Balletacademie, het Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag en Codarts Rotterdam. Gezamenlijk presenteren de scholen zich in een bruisend en veelzijdig programma dat u laat genieten van dé dansers van de toekomst. The National Ballet School in Toronto, Canada, is one of the top dance education institutions in the world. A lot of celebrities have graduated there, various (former) principals of Het Nationale Ballet, among others. Opmerkelijk: een gezelschap dat overbodig wil zijn. Ballet Black is dan ook een unieke groep, met uitsluitend gekleurde en Aziatische dansers. Artistiek directeur Cassa Pancho zou hen het liefst zien doorstromen naar mainstream (witte) balletgezelschappen. Wat toch jammer zou zijn, want Ballet Black, tijdens Holland Dance Festival voor het eerst in Nederland, brengt behalve virtuoze dans veel splinternieuwe choreografieën. Zo danst de groep in Den Haag werken van Will Tuckett, Kit Holder en Arthur Pita, drie van ‘hottest’ Britse choreografen van dit moment. Remarkable: a company that wants to become redundant. Ballet Black is a unique group, with only Asian dancers and dancers of color. Artistic director Cassa Pancho would love to see them advance to mainstream (white) ballet companies. Which would be a shame because Ballet Black presents not only virtuoso dance during Holland Dance Festival but also a lot of brand new choreographies. Prijs Kyle Abraham is een van de shooting stars in de moderne-dansscene in de Verenigde Staten. Geschoold in klassieke muziek, beeldende kunst en – pas in tweede instantie – moderne dans, ontwikkelde hij een heel eigen dansvocabulaire waarin moderne- en urbanstijlen prachtig samenvloeien, compleet met een fikse dosis poëzie en verfijning. Het leverde hem onder meer een MacArthur Fellowship op. Holland Dance Festival haalt Abraham nu voor het eerst naar Nederland. Met veel dynamiek, intensiteit en emotionele nuance beschouwt hij in het groepsstuk Pavement de geschiedenis en situatie van de Black African-Americans. De Amerikaanse pers noemde Pavement een absolute ‘must-see’. Kyle Abraham is one of the shooting stars of the contemporary dance scene in the United States. Trained in classical music, visual arts and – only in the second instance – contemporary dance, he developed a dance idiom that is completely his own that beautifully combines modern and urban styles, complete with a good deal of poetry and refinement. It got him, among other things, a MacArthur Fellowship. Now the festival is bringing Abraham to the Netherlands for the first time. In the ensemble piece Pavement he contemplates about the position of Black African-Americans with a lot of dynamics, intensity and emotional nuance. The American media called Pavement an absolute ‘mustsee’.

Tijdens Holland Dance Festival 2003 maakte Black Grace indruk met ‘fysieke, aardse en compacte, soms bijna vierkant aandoende power’, aldus de Volkskrant. Dertien jaar later haalt Holland Dance Festival het toonaangevende Nieuw-Zeelandse gezelschap opnieuw naar Nederland. Ook nu er vrouwen meedansen in de voorheen ‘all male’ dansgroep zijn de optredens nog altijd ‘volgestouwd met power’. Choreograaf en oprichter Neil Ieremia stelt speciaal voor het festival een afwisselend programma uit zijn oeuvre samen, dat gekenmerkt wordt door rauwe finesse, kracht en schoonheid. In Verse 3 plaatst hij verhalende dans over grote levensvragen naast pure, fysieke uitingen van vitaliteit, in een mix van Samoaanse- en Maori-stijlen én hedendaagse dans. Thirteen years later Holland Dance Festival brings the leading company from New Zealand back to the Netherlands. Even now that women also dance in the formerly all-male dance group, the performances are still ‘packed with power’. Choreographer and founder Neil Ieremia will put together a diverse program from his body of work, especially for the festival, that is characterized by raw finesse, power and beauty. In Verse 3 he places narrative dance about existential questions next to pure, physical expressions of vitality in a mix of Samoan and Maori styles and contemporary dance.

The Look of Feeling Het veelzijdige Amerikaanse danstalent Francesca Harper was solist bij William Forsythe's Ballet Frankfurt maar stond evengoed als hoofdrolspeelster in Broadway-musicals. In de aangrijpende danstheatersolo The Look of Feeling herbeleeft ze het wonderbaarlijke levensverhaal van haar moeder, dansicoon Denise Jefferson. Ze vertelt het emancipatorische verhaal van een zwarte Amerikaanse vrouw die in de jaren zestig en zeventig haar eigen wereld creëerde en tegen alle stromingen in het schijnbaar onmogelijke bereikte. Het stuk laat ook het licht op Harper zelf schijnen, en op de ongekende dosis lef waarmee zij voor deze voorstelling in haar eigen afkomst en verleden is gedoken.

The versatile American dance talent Francesca Harper spent many years as a principal for in William Forsythe's Ballet Frankfurt but also played the lead in Broadway musicals. In the moving dance theatre solo The Look of Feeling she relives the wondrous life story of her mother, dance icon Denise Jefferson. She recounts the emancipatory story of a black American woman who created her own world in the sixties and seventies and achieved the seemingly impossible against all odds. The piece also shines a light on Harper herself and on the unparalleled courage that it took for her to delve into her own past and heritage for this performance.

In een combinatie van oud en nieuw werk, van modern klassiek tot mysterieus en verleidelijk, brengt Straight Around de enorme artistieke reikwijdte van de NDT2-dansers voor het voetlicht. Grootmeester Hans van Manen was van van 1960-1971 en van 19882003 aan het Nederlands Dans Theater verbonden en is in dit programma vertegenwoordigd met twee van zijn absolute topstukken: Solo (1997) en Two (1990). Van Roemeen Edward Clug, artistiek directeur van het Sloveense Maribor Ballet, danst NDT2 een wereldpremière. En ook het Israëlische duo Sharon Eyal en Gai Behar maakt, na het enorme succes van Sara in 2013, een nieuw werk voor de jonge danstalenten van NDT2. With a combination of old and new work, from modern classical to mysterious and seductive, Straight Around showcases the enormous artistic scope of the NDT2 dancers. Master Hans van Manen was connected to the Nederlands Dans Theater from 1960-1971 and from 1988-2003 and is represented in this program with two of his absolute top pieces: Solo (1997) and Two (1990). NDT2 will dance a world premiere by Rumanian Edward Clug, artistic director of the Slovenian Maribor Ballet. Uitreiking Jiri Kylián Ring andere kunstdisciplines’. Het ontwerp van de ring is van Hans Appenzeller en bestaat uit een set van 14 ringen, voor iedere letter van de prijs een ring. De ringen zitten op een ringmaatstok en zijn oplopend in maat. Degene die hem ontvangt mag een passende ring uitzoeken en deze ook houden wanneer hij of zij de prijs doorgeeft. Voor de lege plek op de ringmaatstok wordt een nieuwe ring gemaakt. De winnaar ontvangt ook een financiele stimulans van vijfduizend euro van het Jiři Kylián Foundation.
Tijdens het feestelijke Source of Inspiration gala van het Holland Dance Festival wordt voor de vijfde keer op rij de Jiři Kylián Ring uitgereikt. Janine Dijkmeijer, zakelijk directeur van het Nederlands Dans Theater, ontving de prijs in 2014. Zij geeft de prestigieuze prijs door aan iemand die een belangrijke en inspirerende bijdrage levert aan de dans in Nederland. De ring is in 2006 ingesteld door de Nederlandse Dansdagen uit bewondering voor Kyliáns meesterschap. Aan Jiři Kylián werd gevraagd de ring op termijn door te geven aan een kunstenaar die net als hij een inspirator en vernieuwer is binnen de danswereld. In 2008 gaf hij tijdens de Nederlandse Dansdagen de Ring door aan choreograaf Michael Schumacher, die werd geprezen om zijn ‘improvisatievermogen, het enthousiasme dat hij overdraagt aan jonge dansers en zijn gedreven samenwerking met kunstenaars uit

Jiri Kylián Ring Presentation consists of a set of 14 rings; one ring for each letter of the award. The rings are on a ring measuring stick and vary in size. The recipient of the award can choose a ring that fits and keep it when he or she hands on the award. A new ring is made for the empty place on the ring measuring stick. The winner also receives a financial incentive of five thousand Euros from the Jiři Kylián Foundation.
The Holland Dance Festival’s festive Source of Inspiration gala is the occasion of the fifth presentation of the Jiři Kylián Ring. In 2014, the ring was received by Janine Dijkmeijer, managing director of Nederlands Dans Theater. Dijkmeijer will now be passing on the prestigious award to someone who has made a significant and inspiring contribution to dance in the Netherlands. The Ring award was established in 2006 by the Dutch Dance Festival and presented to Jiři Kylián in honour of his mastery. Kylián was asked to pass the ring on in due course to an artist who, like himself, was a source of inspiration and innovation within the world of dance. At the Dutch Dance Festival in 2008, he passed on the Ring to choreographer Michael Schumacher, who was acclaimed for his ‘improvisation skills, the enthusiasm he conveys to young dancers, and his passionate collaboration with artists from other disciplines’. Begin jaren vijftig zijn Marianna Hilarides en Jaap Flier het legendarische klassieke danskoppel in de opkomende Nederlandse danswereld. Voor Rudi van Dantzig is Flier een idool, voor Hans van Manen de reden om te gaan dansen. Jaap Flier is in 1959 ĂŠĂŠn van de oprichters van Nederlands Dans Theater. Naast danser is hij ook als choreograaf en artistiek leider aan het gezelschap verbonden. Daarna leidt hij tien jaar de School voor Nieuwe Dans Ontwikkeling in Amsterdam. Hedendaagse theatermakers als Boukje Schweigman en Kenzo Kusuda werken nog steeds graag met hem samen, zowel in de rol van danser als die van adviseur. Flier heeft tot op hoge leeftijd opgetreden. Zijn meest recente solo, over het leven van een danser, is expressief en doorleefd in kleine gebaren. Deze film gaat over de opmerkelijke en soms dwarse keuzes die Flier in zijn leven maakt. Als danser is ouder worden voor hem geen beperking maar een verrijking. Met steun van Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Nederlands Dans Theater en Holland Dance Festival.

De beweegkracht van sport en cultuur

Sport en dans; twee werelden apart. Of toch niet? Wat dacht u van freestyle games op de BMX, met stepjes, op schaatsen of acrobatiek, is dit dans of is dit sport? De doelen zijn gelijk: kinderen in beweging brengen, samen plezier maken, nieuwe ‘moves’ uitproberen en laten ontdekken dat iemand meer kan dan hij of zij dacht. Deze conferentie gaat over de vraag hoe sport en cultuur mensen in beweging kunnen krijgen. Hoe zorg je dat zoveel mogelijk kinderen en jongeren in beweging komen? En hoe krijg je hun ouders ook actief? Door de krachten te bundelen staan sport en cultuur sterker en weten ze beter aan te sluiten op interesses van de jeugd. De samenwerking tussen Holland Dance en ADO in de samenleving levert het bewijs dat het kan. Tijdens de conferentie met verdiepende workshops neemt u kennis van meer goede voorbeelden van verbindingen en verbinders tussen sport en cultuur. _ 'De beweegkracht van sport en cultuur' is een initiatief van het Landelijk Kennisinstituut Cultuureducatie en Amateurkunst (LKCA), Holland Dance en de gemeente Den Haag, in samenwerking met de Landelijke Stuurgroep Sport & Cultuur (LKCA, NISB, NOC*NSF, Fonds Cultuurparticipatie, Jeugdsportfonds en Jeugdcultuurfonds, VNG en VSG).

Senior Dance: Het is bewezen dat dans voordelen met zich meebrengt voor ouderen. Wie het meemaakt ervaart de waarde en de betekenis ervan: soepeler bewegen, meer energie en in contact staan met mensen om je heen. Er worden steeds meer initiatieven ontplooid voor ouderen om te kunnen dansen en blijvend in beweging te zijn. Holland Dance zet zich in Den Haag in om duurzame mogelijkheden te creëren. In het debat delen we kennis over de voordelen en werpen we vragen op die nodig zijn om deze vorm een toekomstbestendige plek in de samenleving te krijgen. Ethnic Roots: Het tweede debat gaat over ethnische diversiteit. Het lijkt zo vanzelfsprekend dat we de diverse samenstelling van de maatschappij terugzien op de podia. Maar dit is helaas niet het geval. De omarming van etnische diversiteit lijkt vooralsnog toekomstmuziek. In de internationale pers laaide dit jaar de discussie over de ‘zwarte danser’ weer flink op. Of liever: over het gebrek aan de zwarte danser bij gevestigde westerse dansgezelschappen. Om de discussie te voeden én hopelijk bij te dragen aan een mentaliteitsverandering biedt het Holland Dance Festival naast voorstellingen ook ruimte voor debat.

Dansimpuls biedt de ultieme gelegenheid je te laten inspireren, nieuwe kennis te verwerven en collega docenten te ontmoeten. Tijdens het Holland Dance Festival zijn choreografen en docenten uitgenodigd om hun ervaringen met dansdocenten te delen. Didactiek, debat, eigen vaardigheid, gezondheid en onderzoek staan centraal in de wintereditie van dit trainingsprogramma. Dansimpuls is een initiatief van Holland Dance en de Nederlandse Beroepsvereniging van Danskunstenaars (NBDK). Dansimpuls is the ultimate opportunity to get inspired, obtain new knowledge en meet fellow dance teachers. During Holland Dance Festival choreographers and teachers are invited to share their knowledge with dance teachers. Didactics, debate, own practical skills, health and research are the main topics of this Dansimpuls winter edition. Dansimpuls is a inititive by Holland Dance en the Netherlands Association of Professional Dance Artists (NBDK).

Programma Delft Holland Dance Festival heeft als thuisbasis de stad Den Haag. Deze vijftiende editie bezoeken we echter ook andere steden in Nederland. We brengen internationale dans dichtbij! Bewonder dans in ons nieuwe sateliettheater Theater de Veste in Delft. Ook doen we Rotterdam aan en zijn we een samenwerking aangegaan met de Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam. Maar liefst drie producties toeren langs theaters in heel Nederland.
We zijn trots op de alliantie met het Holland Dance Festival. Theater de Veste is graag ambassadeur van de dans, hiermee verstevigen we die positie en verrijken we het internationale dansaanbod in de regio Haaglanden. Online kaartverkoop
De festivalkassa bevindt zich in het Korzo theater aan de Prinsestraat 42. Hier kunt u kaarten kopen voor alle locaties. Gereserveerde kaarten kunt u tot één dag voor de voorstelling ophalen bij de festivalkassa. Gereserveerde of op het laatste moment online gekochte kaarten kunnen op de dag van de voorstelling opgehaald worden bij het desbetreffende theater.
Online kaarten kopen is voordelig. U betaalt geen reserveringskosten per kaart, enkel per bestelling € 1.50 transactiekosten. Uw kaarten worden tot een week voor de voorstelling thuis gestuurd, zodat u niet in de rij hoeft te staan bij de kassa. Niet opgestuurde kaarten liggen op de dag van de voorstelling klaar bij het desbetreffende theater. Betalen kan veilig met Creditcard of iDeal.

Een half uur voor aanvang worden gereserveerde, maar niet afgehaalde plaatsen ter verkoop aangeboden. Voor uitverkochte voorstellingen werken wij met een wachtlijst.
Openingstijden Ma t/m za van 12:00-18:00 uur en vanaf 2 uur voor aanvang van voorstellingen. Op voorstellingsdagen is de kassa geopend tot aanvang van de laatste voorstelling.
Betalingsmogelijkheden festivalkassa Betalen is mogelijk met contant geld, PIN, Theater & Concertbon/Podium cadeaukaart. Helaas accepteren wij geen creditcards en VVVbonnen. Kortingen zijn mogelijk op vertoon van een geldige Studentenpas, CJP, Ooievaarspas, Uitpas, Korzo Profpas (laatste alleen voor voorstellingen in Korzo). Er kan gevraagd worden om uw kortingskaart te tonen bij de zaal. Houd deze dus altijd bij de hand!

The central Holland Dance Festival box office is located in the Korzo theatre, Prinsestraat 42. You can buy tickets there for all the festival locations here. Reserved tickets can be picked up from the festival box office until the day before the performance. On the day of the performance, you can pick up reserved tickets from the theatre in question.
It is cheaper to buy tickets online. There are no reservation costs per ticket; only a transaction charge of € 1,50 per order. Your tickets will be sent to your home up to one week before the performance, so that you don’t have to queue at the box office. You can pay by credit card or iDeal.
Sold-out performances Reserved tickets that have not been picked up will be offered for sale approximately half an hour before curtain-up.

Bereikbaarheid Zuiderstrandtheater Shuttlebus vanaf Den Haag Centraal 60 minuten voor aanvang van de voorstelling vertrekt eenmalig een shuttlebus vanaf Station Den Haag Centraal naar het Zuiderstrandtheater. Deze bus brengt u rechtstreeks naar het theater. Retourtickets voor de bus (á € 5) koopt u uitsluitend tijdens het bestellen van uw theaterkaarten. De shuttlebus vertrekt vanaf het busplatform op de eerste verdieping van station Den Haag Centraal. De bus van Pasteur Reizen is herkenbaar aan het Zuiderstrandtheater-logo op de zijkant.
Ook is er een gratis pendeldienst met de TukTuk van het Zuiderstrandtheater. U kunt opstappen op een vast punt vóór benzinestation BP Statenlaan, dichtbij halte Statenlaan (tram 11) en halte Van Boetzelaerlaan Noord (tram 17).
