reetings! It may be fall but it sure feels like it’s still summer. Soon though the evenings will get cooler and the mosquitos will go into hibernation and it will start to feel like the falls I remember from my childhood back in Arkansas. This month’s theme of Game Changers is near and dear to Cindy and me. We are passionate about making small local changes when and where we can. The sort of random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty that are always within the capability of all of us and if we’d just do a few of them every day our world and the world would be a nicer place for everyone. As you go through your day this month be on the lookout for little kindnesses you can do and go ahead and do them. As you read through the many local events in this month’s magazine, maybe there is one that you could invite someone to go with you to attend. Your invitation to an uplifting even might just make their day or their week. You may find that without even trying hard you too have become a Game Changer!

Blessed be,

Mike & Cindy Hart

A new book release!

T

Phoenix Oriental Arts offers Past Life Regression Therapy

E

mpower your physical, energetic and mental wellbeing with Master Blue Siytangco. Trained as a Taijiquan Master, Reiki Master, Past Life Regression therapist and Daoist Priest, Blue provides three paths to help you achieve healing and understanding for your body and spiritual wellbeing: Chen Style Taijiquan martial arts, reiki and past life regression. Master Blue teaches at Phoenix Oriental Arts in the Copperfield area. Past life regression (PLR) therapy utilizes meditation techniques to assist clients in remembering memories from past lives that they may have lived. Understanding past lives is imbedded in the concept of reincarnation, where the immortal Soul is believed to be reborn time and time again to gain experience and learn lessons. However, belief in reincarnation is not necessary to benefit from PLR therapy. Often these experiences can be simply understood as the mind creating metaphors to deal with current circumstances in the client’s life. Either way there is still healing on the psychological, emotional, energetic, and physical level. The results vary from client to client, but all recipients will receive substantial benefits. PLR can be used to have a spiritual experience as well, where clients can experience their past lives or have encounters with guides, angels, ancestors, soul mates, or loved ones who have crossed over. Often great wisdom, insight, and deep understanding can be attained in these sessions. PLR is also more often used for therapeutic purposes to help alleviate and often cure psychological and physical ailments like phobias, depression, aches, chronic pain, and fears. For more information about Chen Style Taijiquan martial arts, reiki or past life regression therapy, contact Master Blue Siytangco at: Phoenix Oriental Arts, 17310 FM 529 #111, Houston, TX 77095. 281-394-0476. bluesiytangco.com. The Labyrinth Society (TLS) 18th Annual Gathering

Tom Bird Brings Out The Bestseller in You

T

he “book whisperer”, Tom Bird, will present the Write Your Book in a Weekend Retreat January 19 to 22 at Unity of Houston. Aspiring authors wishing to learn more can attend a complimentary class “Writing in the Divine Author Space” with Tom Bird from 1:30 to 4 p.m. October 30 at Unity of Houston. The weekend retreat is divided into three phases: Preparation and Education; The Retreat; and Revision. Bird’s experience working with tens of thousands of would-be writers over nearly three decades shows that success as an author depends on being able to first generate and then blend with the literary inspiration. Bird says, “Over 90 percent of our authors finish the writing of their books by the end of the second day. Not only do they walk away from the retreat with a written, partially revised book which they can easily finish at home, but with the sharpness of their critical minds numbed by the speed at which they wrote their books, they walk away from the retreat with books that they love, as well.” For more information and to register, phone 928-821-6946 or visit TomBird.com. R

esearch published in Psychological Science, the journal of the Association for Psychological Science, has found that positive moods can be transferred from one person to another via human sweat. The scientists from Utrecht University, in the Netherlands, tested 12 young men and 36 young women. The men were given clean shirts and absorbent pads were attached to their armpits while they watched video clips that induced several emotional states—fear, happiness or neutral. The researchers then stored the absorbent pads for each emotion into sealed jars. The 36 women were then tested with each of the absorbent pads randomly, with five-minute breaks in-between. They placed their chins on a special rest that held the absorbent pad underneath. The research was double-blind, so neither the researchers nor subjects knew which pads they were exposed to. During each exposure, the women’s facial expressions were recorded. The researchers determined that the women had facial expressions reflecting the emotion induced by the videos the men watched, based on the activity of the women’s facial muscles. Senior researcher Gün Semin, of Utrecht University, says, “Our study shows that being exposed to sweat produced under happiness induces a simulacrum of happiness in receivers and induces a contagion of the emotional state. This suggests that somebody that’s happy will infuse others in their vicinity with happiness. In a way, happiness sweat is somewhat like smiling—it’s infectious.”

Diabetics Improve Using Sesame and Rice Bran Oils

esearch published in the American Journal of Medicine found that treating people with a blend of cold-pressed sesame oil and rice bran oil significantly normalizes blood glucose levels. Testing involved 400 men and women for eight weeks, including 300 that had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, by replacing cooking oils in their diet with a blend of sesame and rice bran oil. The researchers, from Japan’s Fukuoka University and India’s Council of Medical Research, divided the patients into four groups. For two months, 100 healthy people and 100 Type 2 diabetes patients replaced their cooking oils with the sesame/rice bran blend, another 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with five milligrams per day of the diabetes drug glibenclamide (glynase in the U.S.) and the remaining 100 Type 2 diabetes patients were treated with a combination of the same dosage of glibenclamide, along with consuming the sesame/rice bran oil blend over the two-month period. After four weeks and eight weeks, the researchers found the diabetes patients that consumed the oil blend had significant reductions in fasting and post-meal blood glucose levels. They also had lower levels of glycated hemoglobin, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“bad” cholesterol) and improved high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (“good” cholesterol). Those treated with the diabetes drug without consuming the oil blend showed none of the same improvements.

Senior Joggers Enjoy Youthful Metabolic Rate

S

cientists from the University of Colorado have determined that individuals older than 65 that run three times a week will likely burn oxygen at the same rate as a 20-year-old runner. Despite being more than four decades older, these runners spend a similar amount of metabolic energy as their younger counterparts. Published in the American College of Sports Medicine journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, the study tested 15 older and 15 younger runners. Each ran a minimum of three times a week for at least 30 minutes each time during the prior six months. The subjects were tested on a specialized treadmill that measured the force applied to the running belt. Each person ran for five minutes during each test at different speeds between 4.5 and 6.5 miles per hour. Regardless of running mechanics and technique, the older runners utilized their metabolic energy at a similar rate as the young runners at all speeds. “Our prior research suggests that the muscles themselves are becoming less efficient. I think of it as your body is like a car. Your body has its own fuel efficiency, and what we’ve seen is that the fuel efficiency in muscles is reduced in older adults that are sedentary or only walk occasionally,” says lead researcher and Professor of Kinesiology Justus Ortega.

globalbriefs Biodegradable Bottle

Almond Choco Treats

Algae-Based Jars Quickly Decompose

Source: TakePart.com

Ingredients 6 scoops Organic Cocoa Complex ½ cup coconut oil 2½ tbsp. maple syrup Himalayan pink salt Almond butter

Sergey Ash/Shutterstock.com

Ari Jónsson, a 32-year-old student at the Iceland Academy of the Arts, has invented an all-natural water bottle that holds its shape when full and decomposes when empty. He debuted his creation at the DesignMarch 2016 festival in Reykjavík, Iceland. The only two materials needed to create the bottle are agar, a gelatinous substance that comes from red algae, and water. “I just followed the path in what I was researching, trying to find new ways to use materials,” says Jónsson, who combined the two ingredients, heated the mixture, poured it into a mold, and then quickly cooled it. The H2O binds and thickens the agar when cooled, retaining the shape of the water bottle mold, explains Jónsson. When the finished bottle is empty, “It will rot like other foods.” The bottles can sustainably decompose in soil, although Jónsson has yet to determine exactly how long that process will take. A plastic water bottle takes more than 1,000 years to biodegrade, and in the U.S., more than 2 million tons of the containers are languishing in landfills.

Directions 1. Melt the coconut oil in a bowl over hot water. 2. Add Organic Cocoa Complex and maple syrup. Stir until smooth and silky. 3. Spoon a little of the mixture into mini paper cups and refrigerate until solid. 4. Spoon a little almond butter on top of the base. Cover with remaining liquid cacao mix. Sprinkle lightly with Himalayan salt. 5. Refrigerate. Eat! Contact: Felecia Hunt, 832-226-6957. Visit Us.NYROrganic.com/shop/Feleciahunt to try our NEW Organic Cocoa Complex.

Incandescent Lights Reinvented as Eco-Friendly Older incandescent light bulbs have been phased out in many countries because they waste huge amounts of energy as heat, but scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have reported in Nature Nanotechnology that they are finding a way to recycle the waste energy and focus it back onto the filament, where it’s re-emitted as visible light. Their innovative structure is made from thin, stacked layers of a type of light-controlling crystal that allows visible wavelengths to pass through while reflecting infrared back to the filament as if striking a mirror. Traditional bulbs are banned in the European Union and Canada, and their manufacture and importation are being phased out in the U.S. They’ve been replaced by more expensive compact fluorescent (CFL) and light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs, which are significantly more efficient. In theory, the crystal structures could boost the efficiency of incandescent bulbs to 40 percent, making them three times more efficient than the best available LED and CFL bulbs.

A new report from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in the UK, has issued the first comprehensive assessment of plant life, the inaugural State of the World’s Plants, and found that one in five plants may be at risk of extinction due to invasive species, disease and changing landscapes. Researchers also have determined that just 30,000 plant species have a documented use out of hundreds of thousands of known species. These are only the vascular plants that have specialized tissue for sucking up water through their systems. Over the years, different people and agencies have identified the same plant at both different times and locations, so they may have accumulated multiple names. The Kew researchers determined that each plant in the International Plant Names Index had, on average, 2.7 different species names. By cutting out the duplicates from more than a million different names, the Kew report was able to pare down the known species to 391,000. In the Arctic, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, a doomsday bank buried in the side of a mountain, contains more than 800,000 samples representing 5,100 different crops and their relatives.

Using Epigenetics for Healing

S

tress is a common cause of inflammation, which is the culprit for most diseases, including asthma, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and more. Within the human genome is information that, when identified and then harmonized (modulated), can help biochemically mediate stress and anxiety; thereby relieving inflammation and preventing disease. Dr. Bernard Straile has developed the IMAET System, which starts by finding and determining unknown stress factors and modulating those stressors at the functional level. This unique Quantum Biofeedback device detects energetically, allergies, infections, emotional traumas and other details of metabolism. It will also scan for mutations and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), the study of which can help pinpoint and predict errors within the DNA that may cause metabolic stress. Metabolism, the process that helps digest food and operate the immune system, is governed by DNA and affected by the environment. Metabolism is also largely influenced by epigenetics, or alterations in gene expressions that do not involve changes to the DNA sequence. The IMAET System helps harmonize and improve metabolic functions through epigenetic healing. Life is orchestrated at the cellular level, and 100 trillion cells work continu-

ously to keep us alive. Each cell contains the entire DNA in its nucleus, and all these cells communicate with each other intensely to coordinate the biochemistry of life. The average human has more than 50 thousand imperfections in the genetic operating code. These imperfections are the most serious stress people must address because it impairs our ability to detox efficiently, metabolize perfectly, handle physical stress easily, manage psychological stress effortlessly and eliminate viruses quickly. The IMAET System enables people to listen to their body’s cellular communications and pick up on the quirks within. The operator then strives to put together an effective modulatory feedback to harmonize epigenetic expression of metabolic errors caused by mutations. The Immune Modulation & Allergy Elimination Quantum Technology (IMAET) is a biofeedback technique that helps manage the thousands of proteins and stressors which need to be analyzed and harmonized to overcome inflammation and pain. Dr. Bernard Straile, BS, DC, the developer of the SHOW Method, an epigenetic healing method, and the IMAET System, a quantum biofeedback software system, is offering a $ 500 discount for the IMAET if you request an online demo and mention NA until Dec 31, 2016. Your Spine The Gateway to Health for You and Our World by Jackie St.Cyr, D.C.

In 1895, a new paradigm of health and disease was born when Daniel David Palmer, D.C. delivered the first chiropractic adjustment, restoring the hearing of a janitor named Harvey Lillard.

T

oday, chiropractors around the world practice a wide diversity of healing modalities ranging from the full-spine structural adjustment to the light touch of Network Spinal Analysis. Most people think that chiropractors are “bad back” doctors and do not understand that the root of chiropractic is about whole healing of the body, mind and spirit. People generally view chiropractors as doctors who “fix” bad backs, necks, cure headaches and relieve pain by “popping” your bones; but the story is not just about bones. Chiropractors facilitate and support the in-born (Innate) healing powers of your nervous system. Chiropractic is more than popping bones or “fixing” you, it is about enhancing your nervous system function so that you can heal and create greater wellbeing and health from within. Chiropractic empowers you through your nervous system, the master system of your body, which gives life to and animates your entire being – body, mind, and spirit. The true purpose of the chiropractic adjustment is the reduction and correction of spinal subluxations, restoration of nervous system function and improvement of quality of life; personally and globally. Your nervous system transmits your life force, animating your entire human experience. When life force is not fully expressed then we are not fully expressive of who we are. In other words, when there is decreased range of motion in your spine (subluxation), there is a resultant decreased range of motion in your being. Your relationship with others and your environment are dependent upon a clear and flexible nervous system. When your spine functions free of interference, a more effective connection and communication between all aspects of your being occurs. You become more

able to adapt to stressful stimuli of everyday life; be they physical, chemical or emotional. Imagine the farreaching effects this has on our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health; not to mention the health of our nation and world. Here is a quick explanation of how your spinal communication network operates. Your brain, the control center for the function of your body, extends down through the foramen magnum (a hole in the base of your skull) to form the spinal cord. These tissues are vitally important to life and must be protected; therefore, they are housed within the hard bones of your skull and spinal column, which consists of 24 moveable vertebrae. Nerves branch from your spinal cord, extend out through the spinal column and then extend to reach every organ, muscle, tissue and cell in your body, controlling all functions – vision, hearing, physical sensations, smell, breathing, digestion, even your heartbeat and even your emotions. When your vertebrae lose their normal position and/or motion this initiates an interruption in the flow of nerve impulses to your organs, muscles and cells. This disconnection prevents system communication, awareness and coordination, resulting in abnormal function and dis-ease. The Chiropractic Adjustment helps restore your awareness and connection within yourself, improving your health and quality of life. Chiropractic is a self-empowering, holistic approach to health care. Consistent Chiropractic care often leads to other beneficial lifestyle choices that support your health and well-being. Listed below are some essentials for health that I incorporate in my practice with my patient care: • PROPER NERVE FUNCTION - Chiropractic adjustments help to restore nervous system function by releasing interference to and from the spinal cord and brain. • POSITIVE MENTAL ATTITUDE - The body and mind are one, therefore we must keep a positive mental attitude for healing. You must change your mind before you can change your life. • ADEQUATE REST - Rest allows the body and mind time to heal. • PROPER NUTRITION - Vitamins from natural foods and supplements, as well and plenty of water intake, play a critical role in creating energy within your body and for the healing process. • EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - Exercise increases blood flow, increases nervous system function and decreases pain.

Chiropractic works on the whole person not just the physical pain and symptoms you may be experiencing. Everyone can benefit from Chiropractic care. Its aim is not only to restore health, but to maintain it. I believe that the purpose of the Chiropractic adjustment is to empower new options in your nervous system and life, not merely to take you back to a place where you were before you became symptomatic. Healing is a process; there is no magical “pop” that will fix you. Take responsibility for your health and participate with Chiropractic care. Open up your mind so you can open up your spine; your personal gateway to health, wholeness and YOU! I practice a revolutionary Chiropractic technique called Network Spinal Analysis. Network is a very gentle yet powerful technique that is safe and effective for all ages. What happens in Network Care is that the body learns new strategies that enable it to connect to and release old tension patterns from past physical, chemical, or emotional trauma and stress. As a patient of Network Care myself, it changed my life, and my practice

members report changes in many areas of their lives including decreased pain, better ability to handle stress and overall improved quality of life. The results of Network Care are tremendous. In fact, 95% of those receiving care have their expectations met or exceeded. My experience of the work assures me that I can expect the same to happen for you. I invite you to make an appointment to have your spine checked. What works best for you, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday? Call me today and let’s connect! I look forward to working with you in turning on your Innate Power to heal! Planning for a Brighter Energy Future Wind Energy Leads the Way

T

his year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) landmark Clean Power Plan (CPP) was to be implemented, however fossil fuel interests brought a lawsuit that resulted in a stay from the U.S. Supreme Court in February. Most states and utilities expect the stay to be lifted and are planning accordingly to reduce carbon emissions. Although Texas has suspended planning, it is still well-positioned to meet its Clean Power Plan target. Largely based on data from primary

grid operator Ercot, an Environmental Defense Fund analysis indicates that Texas will be 88 percent of the way toward compliance with the plan through existing market trends alone. Texas has an abundance of clean energy resources and correct policies can take the state the rest of the way. For example, Texas leads the nation in wind energy production and has twice as much solar energy potential as the next-highest state. “We have seen our subscribers about double in the

last year as people begin to realize the benefits of clean energy,” says John Spicer, president of Breeze Energy, the sole wind energy electric provider in Texas. The CPP includes the first-ever limits on global warming pollution from power plants in our country. Power plants are the single largest source of carbon pollution, emitting about 2 billion tons a year. Once implemented, the CPP will dramatically reduce pollution, saving thousands of lives and billions of dollars. The CPP promotes rules by the EPA to clean up existing power plants and cut global warming pollution from the power sector by 32 percent by 2030, compared to 2005 levels. While the CPP is not enough on its own, its timely implementation is an essential part of fulfilling the obligations we made to the rest of the world in Paris last year to reduce emissions enough to keep warming well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Although the court-ordered stay means states are not required to comply, it does not mean they cannot move forward, and EPA has continued to advance one important piece of the CPP, the Clean Energy Incentive Plan, which is a voluntary program designed to maximize the renewable energy potential of the CPP by removing barriers to investment in energy efficiency and solar in low-income communities and encouraging states and tribes to invest in zero-emitting renewable energy generation. For more information on the Clean Power Plan, visit EPA.gov/cleanpowerplan. Visit Breeze Energy at BreezeEnergy.com. See ad on back cover

President Barak Obama’s announcement of the normalization of Cuban/U.S. diplomatic relations opened up the possibility for a continuing CJP/ISA relationship, as well as their 2015 landmark partnered event when 37 ISA students traveled to Chicago to perform Scenes from Life: Cuba at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. ou clean out your closet every season, change your bed sheets every few weeks and take out the trash every night. When you break something, you replace it and when something is old, you buy a new one. We are constantly changing, replacing and getting rid of the old and unwanted. There is something about it that gives us a feeling of accomplishment. Out with the old, in with the new makes our life run a little smoother. So, why don’t we eliminate the toxic waste from our bodies? Toxic waste is found throughout our body including in the colon. Over a long period of time, waste accumulates and it becomes toxic. The toxic waste can be removed with Colon Hydrotherapy, which is a safe and all-natural way of removing waste from the colon without the use of drugs. Colon Hydrotherapy is the gentle infusion of filtered water into the colon by way of a sterile and disposable rectal tube. A colonic exercise breaks down and releases fecal matter, toxic waste, bile, mucus and debris that are lodged deeply in the colon. When this exercise has been completed, it allows for the body to function more efficiently. When your colon is functioning correctly, it helps reduce the burden of other organs in the body. If you notice constipation, fatigue, swelling, backaches and loss of memory or concentration you might consider doing further research on Colon Hydrotherapy. Everyone who has ever overconsumed fatty and processed foods can benefit from Colon Hydrotherapy. It is not just about eliminating the bad, it’s about benefitting the body as a whole. Benefits of Colon

Not Just for Elimination

Hydrotherapy include sinus drainage, loosening of mucus, skin tightening, relief from headaches, less fatigue, improved bowel function, feeling younger and lighter. Of course, the most common benefit is eliminating built-up toxic waste. Nobody wants to feel sluggish and look bloated. If you are looking for something that will make you feel refreshed from the inside and out, you should definitely give it a try. No worries, if you are a little shy or worried about the process. I suggest booking a weekend stay at a health and wellness resort such as Deer Lake Lodge and Spa. You can go alone or invite your best friend for support. During your stay, you can schedule The Colon Hydrotherapy and can have the rest of the weekend to relax. Following the colonic cleansing, proper rest and nutrition is needed. A diet of solely liquids is recommended and will help with the process of eliminating toxins. After all, it’s not all about eliminating, it’s about feeling rejuvenated. Juicing, cleansing and colonics are designed to work together and help energize, strengthen and enlighten you. Eliminate the old and give yourself a new body. Carrie Harmon is the Spa Director at Deer Lake Lodge & Spa, a health resort that promotes enhanced living through holistic cleansing and other therapeutic practices in a relaxing, secluded environment. Deer Lake Lodge & Spa aspires to improve guests’ health in an environment where they can enjoy a multifaceted cleansing program in a rustic-chic resort atmosphere, located on a 50-acre rustic-chic oasis in Montgomery, TX. www.DeerLakeLodge.com. WALKING MEDITATION The Calming and Centering Effects of Labyrinths

While many of us like to meditate, some can’t sit still. Walking a labyrinth provides an enticing alternative.

A

n archetypal labyrinth gently leads us in a circular path inward toward a center and then back out again. Found in ancient cultures from African, Celtic and Greek to Native American, they became especially popular fixtures in Medieval European churches; one of the most renowned is in France’s Chartres Cathedral. Depictions of labyrinths have been

included in paintings, pottery, tapestries and in Hopi baskets as a sacred symbol of Mother Earth. Several American tribes saw the pattern as a medicine wheel. Celts may have regarded it as a neverending knot or circle. While some of the oldest known labyrinths decorate cave walls in Spain, today they grace diverse locations ranging from spas and wellness centers to parks, gardens, university campuses and even prisons.

“Labyrinths can be outdoors or indoors. Permanent labyrinths may be made of stones, rocks, bricks or inlaid stones. Temporary labyrinths can be painted on grass or made with all sorts of things for a particular purpose or appropriate to a specific cause,” explains Diane Rudebock, Ed.D., resource vice president and research chair of the Labyrinth Society, in Trumansburg, New York. “Walking a labyrinth is useful for those that sometimes have a hard time being outwardly still and drawing themselves inward. You must move your body, and because you’re focused on the path while you’re walking it, it’s easier to drop wholly into the journey and let go of all else,” says Anne Bull, of Veriditas, a Petaluma, California, nonprofit that supports new labyrinth designs to suit the spiritual needs of hospitals, schools and retreat centers. The group also sponsors a worldwide directory at LabyrinthLocator.com.

A labyrinth walk typically involves three stages. The first is for releasing extraneous thoughts on the way to the center. Upon arriving in the stillness of that point, the participant opens heart and mind to receive whatever message or wisdom is intended for them. The return path is the integration phase, to make a fresh insight our own. Participants should approach their walk in different ways: One may have a specific question or intention in mind; another may be open to whatever occurs during their meditation; yet another may repeat a meditative mantra. One might even choose to bypass the path entirely in order to sit contemplatively at its

center. Unlike a maze, it’s impossible to lose our way with the circular path serving as a simple and reliable guide. Although scientific research on labyrinth meditation has been limited to participant questionnaires, future studies may incorporate the use of functional magnetic resonance imaging technology to measure brain activity and record what individuals experience. Labyrinths located in settings like hospitals and prisons lend themselves to such research, says Rudebock. As a Veriditas-certified labyrinth facilitator, she conducts workshops and observes, “Walks are unique to each individual and may not produce uniform or replicable results.” At its core, the experience is about

listening to our truest self, away from the cacophony of modern life. “I believe that the world needs places where our souls can be quiet,” remarks Jean Richardson, director of the Kirkridge Retreat and Study Center, in Bangor, Pennsylvania, which includes a sevencircuit labyrinth. “Retreat centers and labyrinths are places where we can listen to our inner heart, feel our inner calling and tap into our own divine nature. I think deep listening is not always valued in a world where we are rewarded for being busy and keeping our schedules full.”

are found in or near many communities. Following the lead of California’s Golden Door Spa, in Escondido, which pioneered the use of a labyrinth in a spa setting, many spas now incorporate them in their wellness or mindfulness programs. Labyrinthine invitations to a mindfulness practice are open to everyone. “A labyrinth can bridge all beliefs, faiths, religions and walks of life,” says Bull. “You can walk a labyrinth no matter what you believe. Benefits come in walking it with an open mind and open heart.”

percent of net new jobs. Technology allows new commercial ventures to be launched from home, yielding huge savings in startup costs. Owners have found ways to fulfill needs by leveraging their past job experiences and personal interests.

House and Garden

When the economy faltered in 2008, Dave Marciniak, owner and lead designer at Revolutionary Gardens, in Culpeper, Virginia, offered eco-friendly services. “I focus on a few key points and design to make the outdoors a place where people want to be,” he says. Even for urbanites, fresh garden herbs are available thanks to ecopreneurs like Andy Avramenko, who created TrendyThing, in New York City. “The edible plants our bike messengers distribute come from local farmers,” he explains. Basil, parsley, dill, lettuce and other herbs and greens are available for all five boroughs; potted plants arrive fresh weekly via subscription. In addition to cleaning homes, Debbie Sardone, owner of Speed Cleaning, in Lewisville, Texas, saw an opportunity to manufacture her own green cleaning products. They’re part of a full-line online catalog. Ryan Riley and his wife, Ashley Spitz, of Los Angeles, own and operate Biz Bagz, dog waste bags made in America from bio-based resins and recycled plastics. He notes the genesis of their idea: “Landfills are anaerobic, so biodegradable bags don’t get the oxygen required to break down. Compostable bags are available, but few places provide composting services. We offer a cleaner alternative.” Another pet-inspired idea was spawned when Kevin Li, of M a n h a t t a n , N e w Yo r k , l e f t h i s puppy home alone for the first time. He invented an app-operated remote control ball with a camera called PlayDate (Tinyurl.com/RemoteBallApp).

Personal Care

People- and planet-friendly personal care products address other ongoing customer needs. Nitya Gulati, founder of Sugarloom Cosmetics, i n A s h b u r n , Vi r g i n i a , specializes in American-made, vegan, cruelty- and toxin-free nail polish. She advises, “Look for ‘five-free’ on the label, which means no formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene and allergens camphor and formaldehyde resin. Watch out for guanine, made from fish scales, found in glittery polishes. Oleic acid, a thickener, is animal fat. Vibrant reds may contain carmine, made from boiled, crushed beetles.” She warns that products tested by a third party can obscure animal testing during product development. Amelia Swaggert and Elizabeth Ripps, co-founders of California Scrub Company, in Los Angeles, upcycle coffee grounds into a natural facial scrub. They’ve eliminated plastic at every step of production from sourcing to packaging. They’re also helping to keep the world’s oceans from becoming plastic soup by supporting the Beat the Microbead campaign. (BeatTheMicrobead.org/en). Maintaining a professional look while living green can be a challenge. OneSavvyMother.com found a stylish, eco-friendly, lightweight and durable tote bag designed by Natalie Therése. Mya Zeronis saw a need for healthy food and stepped out of her comfort zone to fulfill it through her extra VEGANza Pgh restaurant and its catering arm, Lean Chef en Route, recognized by Sustainable Pittsburgh. “We source locally, compost produce scraps, serve meat- and dairy-free menu options, practice food waste management with root-to-stem preparation and maintain energy conservation,” she says. Customers are encouraged to bike to the restaurant; there’s even a bicycle air pump and flat tire repair kit on the premises if emergencies arise. Shared bikes are a welcome addition at colleges for budget-minded and time-strapped students. Rented by the hour or day, they’re a convenient, healthy and non-polluting way to get around campus. New York University at Buffalo students can remotely locate, rent and unlock GPS-enabled bikes. At Williams College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts, the Purple Bike Coalition provides free use of bikes and a staffed repair station; a cargo bike helps transport larger objects.
