My dedication to photography, and the idea of actually turning it into my profession, apart from occasional art projects, never occurred to me until after my journeys through India, Nepal and Tibet. After that, I was hooked.
zuverlangen. Sowohl positiv, als auch negativ, etwas schönes oder weniger schönes. Wenn ich mit Mode arbeite, kann ich die Geschichte und die Gefühle, die ich vermitteln will, selbst steuern. Mit der Location, bestimmten Posen oder dem Licht hab ich fast alles unter Kontrolle. Bei Reportagen ist es das komplette Gegenteil, was ich manchmal viel faszinierender finde. Eben einfach keine Kontrolle zu haben.
What appeals to you the most in photography? It depends in which context; or which type of photography. In general, I love telling stories and capturing the decisive moments of these stories. Whether it’s emotions given in one specific instant shown in the expression or gestures of a person, or a detail of a location that add to the general ambience of what I am trying to tell.In most cases, it’s being able to tell a story or an event in a single picture. No words or explanations needed. That counts for both fashion and reportage. Giving the viewer enough information to create a response. Both positive and negative, beautiful and ugly. When working in fashion, I can design that story myself and direct the emotions I want to portray. With locations, poses and light all under my control. While in reportage it’s exactly the opposite; which I find much more intriguing at times. Having no control whatsoever.
Denkst du, dass es als Fotograf wichtig ist, technisch auf dem neuesten Stand zu sein? Ich denke, dass das Wissen über neue Technologien schon wichtig ist, doch nicht unbedingt immer notwendig. Aber auch hier hängt es natürlich wieder von der Art der Fotografie ab. Wahrscheinlich kommt man beispielsweise in der Werbung nicht drumherum, auf dem neuesten Stand zu sein. In der Mode- und Reportagefotografie kann die Verwendung älterer Techniken viel attraktiver, in einigen Fällen sogar von Vorteil sein. Aber die beste Technik hilft dir auch nicht, wenn du ein schlechter Fotograf bist. Ein gutes Bild ist ein gutes Bild (und umgekehrt), egal welche Technik du anwendest. Leider glauben viele Leute, das Photoshop das Wundermittel schlechthin ist. Arbeitest du schon immer digital? Nein. Wann immer ich kann, arbeite ich analog. Die Qualität, Präzision und vor allem das Gefühl beim analogen Arbeiten ist immer noch eine ganz andere Art der Fotografie. Man arbeitet genauer, präziser, detaillierter und viel langsamer.
Do you believe it is essential for a photographer to be constantly technically up to date? I believe that knowing about latest developments is a very important thing; yet not essential. Once again, it depends what kind of photography one does. Of course when working in advertising, newest technologies and ways of working can be of utmost importance. Wusstest du schon früh in welche Richtung deine Fotografie gehen soll? Das ist sehr schwer zu beantworten. Hätte ich den Mut, wäre ich wahrscheinlich ein Kriegsfotograf. 55
