European Starlings Small birds with a ubiquitous presence across the United States. The feather coloration of adult birds is black with purple and green flecks or brown with white flecks depending on the time of year (Cornell Lab of Ornithology, n.d.)

Eutrophication A condition which occurs in water bodies when there are excess nutrients present, which often results in conditions that are detrimental to the health of the water body

Hypoxia

A condition that occurs in water bodies wherein the oxygen level is extremely low

Neck collars

A collar that is placed on birds to identify them and track their activities

Recharge basins An area of land which has been manipulated and reconstructed for the purpose of guiding precipitation and surface water through the soil as a primary filtration system (EPA, n.d.)

Subspecies

The term for individuals belonging to a species that have been grouped according to a subset of characteristics

Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL)

A quantity of pollutants which is the maximum amount permitted to safely exist in a body of water. TMDL quantities are determined by the USEPA (EPA, n.d.)
