Population Summary

Today the number of resident Canada geese in New York State is estimated to be over 200,000 (NYSDEC, n.d) and the number is increasing (Figure 2.). According to Bryan Swift, Game Management Section Head for the NYSDEC, the NYSDEC Breeding Waterfowl Population Survey estimates the current population of resident Canada geese on Long Island to be approximately 16,000. A USDA report from 2004 stated that the estimate from 1997 to 1999 for the Lower Hudson Valley and Long Island was 18,000 (USDA, 2004). Mr. Swift said that today that number is approximately 25,000.
