1986-87 O-Pee-Chee #53 Patrick Roy (Rookie Card) The 1986-87 O-Pee-Chee hockey box cover featured Conn Smythe Trophy winner Patrick Roy, the star rookie that led the Montréal Canadiens to the 1986 Stanley Cup title. It was in fact Roy’s O-Pee-Chee hockey card debut, this despite the fact he was playoff MVP the previous season. It marked the first time in 15 years that a Conn Smythe Trophy winner’s rookie card was issued after his playoff heroics. The two previous occasions were Serge Savard in 1969-70 and Ken Dryden in 1971-72. Roy’s honour was highlighted on the back of his rookie card, although playoff stats were not listed. The text read, Roy was “awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the 1986 Stanley Cup Finals.” In his second playoffs in the spring of 1987, Roy helped the Canadiens reach the Conference Final before losing to the Flyers. As it turned out, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner would again be a young star that had yet to appear in an O-Pee-Chee set: the Flyers’ rookie goalie Ron Hextall. 4 | O-Pee-Chee Collector’s Guide

Roy

Hockey fans were quick to compare the Patrick Roy rookie card to the Ken Dryden rookie card from 15 years earlier. After all, both goalies were Conn Smythe Trophy winners and both rookie cards featured a similar “ready” pose distinct to the goalie position. The Roy rookie was one of several cards that featured fresh photographs in the 1986-87 series. The Mario Lemieux card featured a close up shot that highlighted the young star’s iconic jersey number 66; the Wendel Clark rookie featured a steely look that was fitting for the 1986-87 season’s top fighter. Unfortunately, the set photography wasn’t perfect. O-Pee-Chee accidentally mixed up the Moe Lemay and Joel Otto photos, this despite the fact both players featured with different teams.

Wayne The Edmonton Oilers’ captain Wayne Gretzky won his eighth consecutive Hart Trophy (most valuable player), his fifth Pearson Award (most outstanding player), and seventh-straight Art Ross Trophy (most points) in 1986-87. Gretzky won the scoring title by an incredible 75 points, finishing ahead of teammates Jari Kurri and Mark Messier and third-year star Mario Lemieux. Gretzky and his teammates also helped the Oilers win the Presidents’ Trophy with the best regular-season record for the third time in four years. As for other stars, Raymond Bourque won his first Norris Trophy as the best defenceman while rookie Ron Hextall won the Vézina Trophy as the best goalie (but unfortunately was not featured in the 1986-87 O-Pee-Chee series). 6 | O-Pee-Chee Collector’s Guide

Wayne The Edmonton Oilers won their third Stanley Cup in four years, once again beating the Philadelphia Flyers in the final round. To reach the 1987 final, the Oilers eliminated the Los Angeles Kings (five games), Winnipeg Jets (four games) and Detroit Red Wings (five games). Jari Kurri led the playoffs with 15 goals while Wayne Gretzky led the way with 34 points. The Flyers’ rookie goalie Ron Hextall won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff’s most valuable player after he pushed the Oilers to seven games. Hextall, unfortunately, was not included in the 1986-87 O-Pee-Chee series. In the final round, Kurri scored five goals while Gretzky scored 11 points. Kurri scored the overtime winner in game two as well as the series winner in the May 31 finale.

Roy

Patrick Roy was the star rookie from the 1986-87 O-Pee-Chee series, already a Stanley Cup winner and Conn Smythe playoff MVP. As it turned out, he was the only 1986-87 rookie that became a Hockey Hall of Fame honoured member. Roy won two Stanley Cups with the Montréal Canadiens (1986 and 1993) and two more with the Colorado Avalanche (1996 and 2001). He was also a three-time Conn Smythe Trophy winner (1986, 1993, 2001). Roy was not the only popular rookie in the 1986-87 series. The Calgary Flames’ Gary Suter won the Calder Trophy as the most outstanding rookie in 1985-86, while the Toronto Maple Leafs’ 1985 first-overall pick Wendel Clark was Suter’s runner up. New York Rangers’ goalie John Vanbiesbrouck, meanwhile, won the 1985-86 Vézina Trophy as the league’s best goalie. 8 | O-Pee-Chee Collector’s Guide

Gilbert Hockey Hall of Fame honoured member Gilbert Perreault made his last O-Pee-Chee appearance in the 1986-87 series. The 1970 first-overall draft pick - in fact, the first selection in franchise history - spent his entire 17-year career with the Buffalo Sabres. He helped the Sabres reach the 1975 Stanley Cup final, then served as the team captain from 1981-82 to 1986-87. Perreault assumed the captaincy from two-time 50-goal scorer Danny Gare, who played with the Detroit Red Wings and Edmonton Oilers en route to his last O-Pee-Chee card in 198687. Other popular players making their O-Pee-Chee exit were former Blackhawks’ captain Darryl Sutter, goalie Glenn “Chico” Resch, and tough guy Dave “Tiger” Williams.
