Derived from Renaissance lutes and tuned like a violin, the mandolin has spread from its Italian birthplace throughout the world. Its distinctive sound is featured in bluegrass, old-time, Celtic, rock, folk, classical, and ethnic music, playing melody and rhythm. Students will learn basic first-position chords, picking techniques, and several melodies in various folk styles. There will also be demonstrations of various mandolin-family instruments, old and new, and discussions of further resources for future development. Ability to read standard music notation is helpful, but not required. NOTE: Students will need to have their own instruments. What better way to develop beginning musical skills than learning to play the harmonica? Harmonica Horizon will cover basic skills, including: playing scales/simple melodies; single-note, harmony, and chordal playing; “cross harp” or “second position” for blues; note-bending; playing in minor keys; and beginning techniques for vibrato and trills. Additional topics include theory/chord structure as applied to the harmonica as well as harmonica selection and care. NOTE: Students will need to purchase a ten-hole, diatonic harmonica in the key of C.

VoiCe ClaSS for adultS Chris Jones, Instructor 6 Tuesdays, July 7-August 11 7:00-8:00 pm beginning and intermediate level singers, ages 18+

If you’ve always wanted to explore your singing voice, but weren’t sure about individual lessons, try this small group approach! During the six-week course, participants will learn the fundamentals of breath support, healthy tone production, and have the chance to sing songs in a variety of musical styles. Instructor will provide in-class piano accompaniment. Participants will have the opportunity to perform at least one song in an informal recital during the final class meeting on Tuesday, August 11. Let your voice be heard this summer!

Are you looking for a fun, accessible way to start learning music? Well, the ukulele is the perfect instrument to develop musical skills while playing in a group with others! Join ukulele master Randy Pollok in this intergenerational class with the emphasis on learning basic chords and songs in a welcoming environment that fosters a positive attitude and a sense of community with other class members. Grab your children, your spouse/partner, family members, and friends and join together in this enjoyable way to make music together!

Explore music by the popular rock ‘n’ roll groups from Britain that forever changed the musical scene in the 1960s. Participants will work on songs by bands including The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Donovan, Chad and Jeremy, and the Hollies – all adapted for ukulele!

Have you always wanted to learn to play the guitar in a social atmosphere with other adults? Then these guitar classes are just for you! Learn the basics of playing the acoustic guitar, while engaging in fun activities to build musicianship skills. Music to be studied will include both folk tunes and classic pop tunes.

Hochstein’s adult guitar ensembles perform a wide variety of music including Bach, Mozart, Albeniz, Hindemith, Cole Porter, and others. New students who are interested in joining the ensemble are encouraged to contact John Wiesenthal at john.wiesenthal@hochstein.org before registering.

a Summer faVorite! adult String experienCe Michelle Walker, Instructor 6 Mondays, July 6-August 10 7:30-8:30 pm ages 18+, beginning levels

Calling all aspiring violin, viola, and cello players! If you’ve always wanted to play a string instrument, but prefer learning in a class environment with other adults, then try Adult String Experience! Students will learn the beginning technical approach to their instrument, discuss basic note-reading, and delve into introductory music-making. Students who are interested are encouraged to move on to individual lessons at Hochstein in Fall 2020. Book for Class: Hal Leonard: Essential Elements for Strings Book 1 (available online and at local music stores).

hoChStringS adult ChamBer orCheStra mini-Camp - hoChStringS goeS to the moVieS! Pia Liptak, Director 4 Tuesdays & Thursdays, August 4 & 6, 11 & 13 5:00-6:30 PM Adult, intermediate-advanced level, NYSSMA Level 4+ or the equivalent

This summer, explore everyone’s favorite movie themes with this mini-session of our popular adult orchestra! Join fellow violinists, violists, cellists, and double-bassists in the joyful musical interaction that is a string orchestra! Students will come together for a short session to learn repertoire pieces in a collaborative, friendly environment. Participants should be able to play repertoire such as an easy Baroque sonata or concerto movement.

Special Opportunity: All HochStrings participants can bring a friend for the August 11 meeting to experience the fun of HochStrings firsthand.

Fee: $10 registration fee: $66* tuition. For those enrolled in individual lessons, tuition is $54.
