Expanding the Hoag Family Legacy Presented to the Hoag Family Foundation August 2023

The Hoag Family’s Vision & Impact

The Hoag family’s visionary gift to build Hoag Hospital Newport Beach more than 70 years ago began a legacy of generosity and profound impact on Hoag and our community. The Hoag Family Foundation’s continued giving, including transformational support of the Hoag Family Cancer Institute and the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living, has empowered Hoag to deliver exceptional and compassionate health care while catalyzing innovation and growth.

As Hoag evolves to meet the needs of our growing community and shape the future of health care, we are grateful for the possibility of partnering with the Hoag Family Foundation once again. What follows is an overview of opportunities that reflects your legacy of generosity and furthers your impact on Hoag and the communities it serves.

Thank you for your ongoing faith in Hoag and all that you do to support linking patients and families in need with the best resources for better health today and in the future.

02

Boldly Hoag: : Expansion is Just the Beginning

Boldly Hoag is a $300 million capital campaign to expand the grounds of Hoag Irvine, now named the Sun Family Campus, and redefine the future of health care—with our patients at the center.

At its heart, Boldly Hoag is about redefining what comes next for our patients, our staff, our community, and health care more broadly. More than new buildings, Hoag’s expansion is about commitment. Our commitment to delivering innovative, comprehensive care across specialties, in one location. Our commitment to treating our patients with compassion and providing them with the support they need to navigate the complexities of their unique health care journeys. Thanks to the generosity of Hoag’s philanthropic community, Hoag’s commitment to being a leader in health care isn’t just an idea; it’s a reality.

Boldly Hoag Philanthropic Opportunities

Cancer & Digestive Health Specialty Clinic | $10,000,000 Payable over a 7-year period

Thanks in large part to generous support from the Hoag Family Foundation and others in our community, Hoag Family Cancer Institute has been Orange County’s number one cancer care provider since 2013. The clinical leaders Hoag recruits and mentors have designed an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to care that leverages the latest in research and diagnostic technologies to improve the prevention, detection, and treatment of cancer.

With the largest digestive health program in Orange County, Hoag’s Digestive Health Institute offers a comprehensive, whole-person approach to care that considers patients’ nutrition, mental health, and other aspects of life impacted by digestive disease.

The Cancer & Digestive Health Specialty Clinic will bring these two outstanding institutes together to offer subspecialized outpatient services, including dedicated urgent care services for cancer patients. The clinic will be connected to the Cancer & Digestive Health Pavilion by the Sensory Healing Garden and covered walkways.

Boldly Hoag Philanthropic Opportunities

Hospital Pavilion Concourse | $5,000,000

Located in the main hospital pavilion, the concourse will provide an open-concept pathway with easy access to a host of amenities, including the concierge desk, gift shop, beverage kiosk, chapel, and chapel garden.

Often patients’ and visitors’ first interaction with the hospital, this modern, light-filled space infuses healing elements of nature and enhanced customer service into the patient experience, setting the tone for their entire visit at the hospital.

05

Cancer & Digestive Health Sensory Healing Garden | $2,000,000

The Sun Family Campus will offer wellness and health-enhancing features such as indoor-outdoor spaces and gardens for seamless, hospitality-focused experiences that promote healing from arrival to patient rooms and every step in between.

At 2,500 square feet, the Sensory Healing Garden is visible from both inpatient and outpatient facilities within the new Cancer & Digestive Health Pavilion. Naming this intentionally designed, atrium-style space with calming and nurturing landscaping would serve patients, loved ones, physicians, and staff in need of a moment of respite.

06

Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living

As a flagship for community care, the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living serves as a one-stop shop to meet the many needs of underserved families. The Center enables more than 25 partner organizations to take a holistic approach to addressing everything from health care to legal services, to employment and social support. By emphasizing three vital components—mental health support, case management, and community nurse navigation—Hoag delivers integrated services for people of all ages and creates meaningful changes that promote long-term, enhanced quality of life. The following philanthropic funding opportunities will significantly impact this model of care.

07

Community Benefit Philanthropic Opportunities

Community Benefit Endowment | $5,000,000

The longevity of Hoag’s community services profoundly impacts people in need. An endowment fund at this level would ensure Hoag’s long-term ability to wrap its arms around families during trying times, filling gaps where needed. This endowment would also contribute to the recruitment of staff to match the cultural needs of our communities, allowing assistance in languages they understand. Sustainable philanthropic funding through an endowment can help Hoag provide emergency rental assistance, food supplies, and gas and gift cards that make all the difference during moments of crisis. While the causes of peoples’ challenges are many, endowments help Hoag support the community’s changing needs in perpetuity. For more than 70 years, Hoag has answered the call of the evolving community during times of hardship and uncertainty. Your generosity can bolster Hoag’s ability to continue this duty long into the future.

Community Benefit Excellence Fund | $2,500,000

An excellence fund provides long-term support for an organization. These funds provide a baseline of resources and help Hoag plan for the future with greater confidence. The Community Benefit Excellence Fund expands your support of the underserved in our community by empowering the Melinda Hoag Smith Center for Healthy Living to address immediate and long-term needs. Staff support is one of these immediate needs. This fund could help support critical staffing needs such as case managers, nurse navigators, outreach ambassadors, and licensed clinical social workers. Currently, our licensed clinical social workers have a three to four-week waiting period for an appointment. These are the team members our community members rely on, and their expertise is crucial.

08

Physician Wellness

Recent studies by Stanford Medicine show physician burnout rates of up to 63%, resulting in increased physician turnover, inefficiencies in the delivery of care, higher costs of care, decreased patient and staff satisfaction, and, most notably, a decline in the quality of care. While self-assessed physician burnout rates at Hoag are below the national average, Hoag is leading the charge in helping solve national burnout rates and physician shortages by developing a unique and innovative model for physician wellness that can be replicated across the country.

09

Physician Wellness Philanthropic Opportunities

Physician Wellness Fund & Endowment | $5,000,000

Giftedthrough a $1,000,000 fund and $4,000,000 endowment

With an established and named Hoag Family Physician Wellness Program at Hoag, the next vital priority would be to ensure long-term sustainability with a fund and an endowment. A $1,000,000 fund will give Hoag the resources to build up the new program. With a $4,000,000 endowment, we can create and sustain an infrastructure with a committee focused on prioritizing physician wellness. This group will develop programs for resilience, fitness education, mental health support, educational and professional training, and more. Hoag will be a leader with the first comprehensive physician wellness program on-site in Orange County. As Hoag continues to expand its footprint and become the premier health care destination on the west coast, a program like this will be vital to recruiting and retaining top physician talent.

Physician Wellness Program | $2,500,000

A gift at this level will have a transformative impact on building the infrastructure for a named Hoag Family Physician Wellness Program. This program will engage, support the well-being of, and enrich the experience of Hoag’s expert physician leaders. By creating a multipronged program, Hoag aims to cultivate a physician culture of wellness, increase the efficiency and efficacy of practice, and provide training for leadership in medicine and health care management roles. With the newly opened General William Lyon Leadership Center, Hoag has created a hub for physicians to collaborate, rejuvenate, and engage in enrichment activities. This gift will provide funding needed to launch the program and have resources to build its framework.

In Gratitude

The Hoag Family Foundation’s steadfast commitment to Hoag means more to our community than you may ever fully know. Your generous giving over the years has improved the health and well-being of multiple generations and made an enduring impact.

Each of the preceding philanthropic priorities would bear the name of the Hoag family, further designating it as a cause close to your heart. We will work with you on the design and placement for significant and meaningful recognition of your generous philanthropy. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of these opportunities to continue your partnership with Hoag on behalf of the patients and families we serve.
