The HNTB Companies Infrastructure Solutions

Water Services Public- and private-sector clients look to HNTB to help address their water quality challenges from planning and design through construction phasing and operations support. HNTB delivers an array of innovative engineering solutions for drinking water, wastewater and water resources challenges. Drinking water. Helping communities provide a safe and ample supply of drinking water is the primary goal of HNTB’s drinking water experts. Our drinking water group focuses on cost-effective treatment process analysis and design to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act and associated regulations. Using distribution system modeling, HNTB finds the most efficient methods to protect and distribute drinking water, so the water’s quality is the same when it reaches your tap as when it left the plant.

Wastewater. Planning and designing innovative treatments that return our used water to the environment as a clean and safe resource are a top focus of HNTB’s wastewater professionals. HNTB’s designs combine the latest technology, equipment and treatment processes with a common-sense, client-focused approach producing unique solutions for efficiently operable facilities. Through the use of conveyance modeling, HNTB evaluates infiltration and capacity issues in conveyance systems and develops efficient solutions for future planning and implementation. Water resources. HNTB’s water resources professionals use their diverse experience to address our clients’ concerns of stormwater regulations, flood protection, and green infrastructure. They provide planning and design services to manage the quantity and quality of surface flows, safely conveying stormwater to receiving water and mitigating flood events. Our professionals perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling to evaluate stormwater management and low impact development alternatives and their impact on receiving stream quality and flood management.

Applying a proven approach HNTB is known for its technical excellence in inspection, assessment, planning, design and project management capabilities. Beyond its technical know-how, HNTB helps clients balance a multitude of environmental, financing and water quality considerations with each program. Muncie Water Pollution Control Facility Treatment Upgrades HNTB provided design and construction engineering services for the wet phase of the Kilgore Interceptor, which were part of the overall WPCF 2016 Treatment Upgrades for Muncie Sanitary District in Muncie, Indiana. The project is based upon the recommendations of the Basis of Design Report previously completed by HNTB. The WWPS design includes an 80 MGD submersible pump station, intake electrical building, piping and a diversion structure. The Kilgore Interceptor includes approximately 1,600 feet of 108-inch-diameter interceptor sewer and approximately 250 feet of 54-inch-diameter sewer, and 330 feet of 60-inch-diameter sewer and a castin-place junction structure which will connect to the existing South Side Interceptor. Central Industrial District Green Infrastructure and Improvements The City of Kansas City, Missouri and Water Services Department (KC Water) hired HNTB as designer of record on a green infrastructure demonstration project in the Central Industrial District of the city. A part of the city’s Smart Sewer Program (SSP), green infrastructure has been integrated into SSP’s solutions for sewer overflow control. Instead of conveying stormwater runoff away from a site through a system of underground pipes, green infrastructure uses natural systems to keep the runoff on site where it can nurture beneficial plant life and percolate into the ground naturally. Southport Wastewater Treatment Plant The Southport Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant in Indianapolis, Indiana, is one of two large wastewater treatment plants owned and operated by Citizens Energy Group that serves the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 2006, the federal government mandated that approximately 30 combined sewer overflow control measures be implemented by the year 2025 to reduce raw sewage overflows into Indianapolis area waterways. As lead designer, HNTB managed the plant upgrades. The HNTB-led team’s design exceeded the federally mandated capacity expansion requirements and additional opportunities to increase low capacity were realized. Once all improvements are made, the wastewater system will be able to divert 3.5 billion gallons of sewerage that is currently polluting local waterways.

Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District County Grounds Floodwater Management Facility HNTB served as lead consultant for the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District floodwater management project, which protects densely populated neighborhoods from major floods. To reduce flooding along the river, the connecting tunnel and diversion structure were built to capture and store portions of the flow in Underwood Creek, which would otherwise cause flooding at downstream areas. In addition, HNTB prepared the complex environmental assessment and developed design refinements to minimize potential impacts to natural resources. The design also incorporated measures to provide wetland impact mitigation, as well as ecosystem restoration improvements.

West Closure Complex Structure Pump Facilities As part of the ARCADIS and Bioengineering Group joint venture, HNTB led design work for the pump facilities of the West Closure Complex structure, one of the largest, most complicated components of the Greater New Orleans Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction System. The system includes levees, floodwalls, sluice gates, the country’s largest sector gate and the world’s largest interior drainage pump station. The HNTB team completed a planning study of alternatives under consideration, assessed pump types and placement, designed the pump station, provided engineering and quality assurance services, and oversaw quality control during construction.

Tres Rios Ecosystem Restoration and Flood Control Project HNTB served as design subcontractor on the designbuild team for the Tres Rios Ecosystem Restoration and Flood Control project, which reclaims a 7-mile stretch of the Salt and Gila rivers west of Phoenix by establishing wetlands and recreational space. HNTB experts developed a 3-D design contoured to the terrain, a process that took into consideration how the work would affect the open-water plain. As a result, the completed project reduces the potential 100-year floodwater level along the rivers.
