As facilities program manager/ construction manager since 2016, HNTB has partnered with the Dallas For Worth International Airport (DFW) on a range of projects that have improved operations, set new industry standards and enhanced the passenger journey.

Some of these projects include:

• High C Gates Modular Construction — A first in the U.S., six modules were constructed offsite and moved into position by self-propelled transporters, creating the new 80,000-square-foot concourse 22 percent faster than traditional methods. State-of-theart, 40,000-square-foot integrated operations center

John F. Kennedy International Airport

Partnering to transform the John. F Kennedy International Airport into a 21st century, modernized and unified facility, HNTB is currently overseeing the JFK Redevelopment Program for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).

In addition to providing full-service program management support, HNTB’s project team is assisting PANYNJ in the development of design-build documents for roads, utilities, the airport’s ground transportation center and an additional substation. This includes working with the Port Authority in managing reviews of developers design and construction planning, overseeing technical portions of the developer leases and managing compliance of the leases during construction.

HNTB is also managing community outreach activities to help identify and leverage opportunities for local, small and minority businesses to maximize their participation in the Redevelopment Program.

Chicago Department of Aviation

For nearly forty years, HNTB has worked alongside the Chicago Department of Aviation to provide a variety of services. Since 2011, HNTB has served the CDA as a program and construction manager for capital improvement programs at both O’Hare and Midway International Airports.

Miami-Dade County Aviation Department

Services: Program oversight and certification of all capital improvement projects using bond funding, annual inspection of airport facilities, asset management, BIM support, miscellaneous A/E support services including plans review, structural inspections and recommendations for repair, construction inspections, building re-certifications, ADA consulting services, development of design and commissioning guidelines, scheduling, cost estimating

A partnership built and maintained over the last seven decades, HNTB has served as bond engineer to the Miami-Dade County Aviation Department (MDAD) since 1954. Through this collaboration, MDAD has been able to address everchanging safety and security challenges as well as the explosive growth in the region — both in passenger travel and cargo operations.

As MDAD’s lead A/E consultant, HNTB helps ensure projects are prioritized and funded appropriately and offers important financial guidance to help maintain facilities and ensure safe and efficient operation.

In addition to these services, HNTB has continued to bring additional insights and expertise across a variety of areas, including planning, security, cargo, concessions, sustainability, resiliency and technology.

St. Louis Lambert International Airport

Checked Baggage Inspection Systems

Services: Plan reviews, scheduling, procurement, project delivery methodology, design and construction management, program and project controls, cost estimates, value engineering

Providing construction management services, HNTB’s innovative solutions have allowed the TSA to employ more efficient means of inspecting and screening checked baggage and speeding the delivery of cleared baggage to airlines’ outbound bag rooms.

Project installation of the CBIS was complex. To ensure minimal impacts on ongoing operations and disruption to overlapping construction projects at the airport, the CBIS was addressed through a phased approach. This required modifying the baggage handling conveyor systems across two terminals and changes to baggage conveyor components, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, structural, architectural and telecommunications infrastructure, including:

• Installation of explosive detection system units within baggage screening areas

• Explosive trace detection resolution areas

• A remote centralized on-screen resolution and control room

• Restoration of the terminals’ ticketing lobbies following operational testing of the CBIS network

Detroit Metro Airport North Terminal

Services: Planning, design management and reviews, construction management, project controls, stakeholder coordination

Serving in an oversight role for the Wayne County Airport Authority for the North Terminal Redevelopment project, HNTB acted as a program manager for a 26-gate terminal complex to better serve airlines and help create a worldclass facility for travelers.

The project included demolition of existing facilities and the design and construction of a new 824,000-squarefoot, two-level terminal facility with a 3,500-foot-long concourse.

In addition, the program included a Federal Inspection Services facility, 50,000 square feet of concessions space, a new apron with hydrant fueling, a common use baggage system with an integrated in-line explosives detection system, civil landside and connection to existing infrastructure.

Denver Hotel and Transit Center

Services: Program management, construction management, technical planning, building information modeling

HNTB served as design and construction manager on the program management team for Denver International Airport to help add first-class amenities and prepare the airport for long-term growth.

The work included oversight and contributions to key components of the project, such as the installation of bridges on approach roadways, mass excavation and shoring, and securing the terminal tent during construction.

The facility achieved LEED Gold certification and includes low flow and flush plumbing fixtures, card-key control of guest room plug loads, temperature setbacks, and an on-site PV system to offset nearly 30 percent of annual energy use as well as 43 percent annual energy use savings including renewables.

Features of the Hotel and Transit Center:

• Regional Transportation District train station connecting to city’s light-rail system

L.F. Wade International Airport

Services: Program management, airport master planning, resiliency planning, sustainability studies, financial consulting, owner’s representative for public-private partnerships, project controls, stakeholder management, cost estimating, construction oversight

HNTB served as an advisor to the Government of Bermuda over a 15year period to help deliver the vision of a new terminal that would make the airport more passenger friendly, both in terms of experience and operations.

The partnership began in 2005 as HNTB was brought on board to create a new master plan for L.F. Wade Airport and was then extended to provide financial analysis to study how best to fund the new terminal.

In 2015, Bermuda once again looked to HNTB, this time serving as its technical representative and program management lead for the new terminal

complex. The work included leading the technical due diligence for a public-private partnership; working directly with the Bermuda government attorneys, bond counsel and developer to structure the P3 terms; and final agreement.

In addition to the new terminal, HNTB’s program oversight covered landside roads, airside pavement, water treatment and sewage facilities as well as renovations to the existing terminal so it could be utilized for air cargo operations.

Architectural Design

Denver International Airport Concourse Expansion

As lead designer of Concourses A and B West at the world’s third busiest airport, HNTB partnered with Denver International Airport to help create a space that allows DEN to meet its goal of having the capacity and infrastructure to support 100 million annual passengers by the end of the decade.

HNTB’s design created airy, contemporary spaces with white terrazzo floors, high ceilings, clerestory windows and plentiful lighting. A series of horizontal glass windows and horizontal metal panels allow daylight to penetrate farther into the building.

This 600,000-square-foot expansion includes upgraded systems to improve efficiency and passenger comfort. Updated holdrooms feature touchless technologies. Updated holdrooms feature touchless technologies as well as a variety of quiet zones, lounge seating and workplace seating. An outdoor terrace offers live entertainment with fire pits and views of the Rocky Mountains.

Every element of the A and B West concourses was designed to enhance the travel experience. The spaces influence how airline passengers feel as they move through the new concourses, beginning with ceiling acoustics and speaker systems used to create a soothing environment.

Terminal C, Orlando International Airport

Services: Architect of Record

Orlando International Airport’s new Terminal C is providing a unique and seamless journey centered around the passenger. HNTB served as architect of record for the Greater Orlando Airport Authority to help bring their vision of The Orlando Experience™ to life.

An ode to the region, the terminal is an architectural depiction of Central Florida with elements inspired by the region’s natural springs, foliage and sunlight.

Terminal C’s linear configuration and touchless technologies make the passenger journey safer and more intuitive. The project includes many industry firsts, like:

• 100% total virtual ramp control for airline ground operations

• 100% automated public screening lanes at the TSA checkpoint

• 100% facial recognition “e-gates” for international arrivals and departures

• “Bags First” design in Customs and Border Protection Arrivals

• 100% trackable baggage handling system

• Fully integrated, multimodal airport terminal with direct high-speed rail connectivity

• A design targeting LEED®v4 campuswide certification

United Airline Terminals

7 & 8, Los Angeles International Airport

Services: Lead designer, principal Architect and Engineer of Record

As a critical entry and departure point for their passengers, United viewed terminals 7 and 8 at LAX as a place for a signature redevelopment project. HNTB worked alongside the airline as prime designer, architect and engineer of record to incorporate new TSA standards, streamline the overall passenger processing experience and create a cleaner flow of traffic throughout the terminal.

Amongst these terminal improvements, passengers who check-in online and have no bags to check, can now arrive at a designated curbside zone and use the “Direct to Security” path that bypasses the check-in lobby. Additionally, improved intuitive wayfinding, updated and more inviting holdrooms, and outdoor seating with views of the city skyline and Santa Montica mountains create a more comfortable and memorable passenger experience.

HNTB worked with multiple stakeholders to develop a construction phasing plan that would keep the terminals operational, prevent passenger flow disruptions and address safety and code compliance issues in work zones.

Terminal 2, San Diego International Airport

Services: Lead designer, Architect and Engineer of Record, programming planning

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority retained HNTB to develop a master plan and advanced terminal plan, leading to terminal expansion. As lead architect and designer, HNTB along with a joint-venture delivered the expanded terminal, airside paving and central utility project that helped support the airport’s longevity and the region’s economic vitality.

A winner of 18 best design and construction awards, the terminal includes upscale airline clubs with magnificent views, a meditation room, integrated public art and the first postsecurity service animal relief area at a U.S. airport.

As the world’s first LEED Platinum certification for a commercial airport, designers incorporated sustainable elements such as natural lighting in the Sunset Cove atrium to help reduce power consumption. Pre-conditioned air and a 400-Hz ground power gate system allow aircraft to turn off their engines and auxiliary power unit, reducing air emission and fuel costs.

Tom Bradley International Terminal Modernization, Los Angeles International Airport

Services: Associate architect

Terminal modernization is keeping LAX competitive in the global aviation market.

As the largest public works project in the history of Los Angeles, the modernization of Tom Bradley International Terminal at LAX prepared the airport for passenger growth and positioned the terminal to accommodate next-generation aircraft.

Serving as associate architect for the first new terminal expansion at LAX in more than 20 years, HNTB ensured that the design of the updated terminal was functional, leading to a seamless passenger experience. The updated facility nearly doubled processing capacity to approximately 4,500 passengers per hour.

Food and retail opportunities were heavily expanded as a part of the terminal updates. The pavilion features premier dining and duty-free luxury shops, including local L.A. brands, and other world-class amenities.

Terminal D, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport

Services: Associate Designer

As associate designer for the 23-gate concourse, 1.9 million square-foot terminal, HNTB was responsible for the design of all project components of the $1.03 billion Terminal D Capital Improvement Program. HNTB also provided a comprehensive urban design guidelines program for the entire Central Terminal Area, allowing the project team to establish a holistic design approach for the entire site.

With a focus on delivering a passenger experience that establishes DFW as a world-class international gateway, HNTB created a space that gives travelers the maximum opportunity to shop, eat and meet while still having direct visual contact with their gates.

Through a vertical approach, the facility evolved from a horizontal, horseshoeshaped terminal into a vertical terminal that distributed the functions of multiple floors, while maintaining clarity.

New Terminal, Wichita

Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport

Services: Planning, design, construction administration

This aerodynamic terminal reflects Wichita’s rich history with aviation and its designation as the “Air Capital of the World”. The facilities feature a two-way convex curve of the roof that was designed to resist gale-force winds while reminding visitors of the dynamics of flight.

Passenger spaces throughout the terminal feature generous, yet comfortable daylighting through thoughtful glazing and skylight placement which has generated significant cost savings due to the installation of dynamic lighting controls.

Terminal Project, Santa Barbara Municipal Airport

Services: Architectural and interior design for expansion, historic terminal relocation and renovation

To reflect the rich history of the local community, HNTB designed this new terminal in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, connecting the look and feel of the facility to Santa Barbara’s strong connection to Spanish Colonial mission architecture and culture. The design’s concept carries throughout, from large scale elements down to the intricate details of the project. This commitment led the project to obtain approval for the first glass boarding bridges in the United States that allow for views of the Santa Ynez mountains.

Key aspects of the project include:

• Existing terminal on the National Register of Historic Places

Airport Expansion and Development Program, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport

Services: Principal architect/ engineer, design

Serving the City of Austin Department of Aviation and supporting the AustinBergstrom International Airport’s longterm growth strategy, HNTB is providing services as the principal architect/engineer on Phase 1 of the Airport Expansion and Development Program (AEDP).

HNTB will establish overall design guidelines of the program, including enhancements to the passenger

experience and the vision for future design of AEDP facilities. Major elements of Phase 1 are a new 20gate midfield concourse, a tunnel connecting the midfield concourse to the existing concourse and terminal, as well as various airside and landside improvements and projects that prepare for expansion to the airport’s terminal. The firm will also support other elements to improve signage and wayfinding, baggage handling, sustainability and security.

With passenger traffic through AustinBergstrom International Airport expected to significantly increase in the coming years, this initial phase of the redevelopment and expansion program is a vital step to implementing a longterm strategy for sustained growth.

Blue Express Curbside, Tampa International Airport

As the first “express curbside” at a U.S. airport, Tampa International’s Blue Express Curbside was designed for faster curb-to-gate transitions for travelers who do not need to check baggage or stop at baggage claim.

Integrating design elements that evoke images of Florida’s sunlight and water, the curbside and its supporting facilities advance innovation in the aviation industry, enhances the passenger

journey and improves the overall travel experience.

Completed on budget and ahead of schedule, the Blue Express Curbside brings many benefits to the airport and its customers:

• Safety. Reduces congestion and increases passenger safety.

• Capacity. Doubles curbside capacity, positioning TPA for future expansion and operations.

• Expansion. Advances the airport’s master plan and prepares for the addition of a new airside international terminal.

Automated People Mover,

Los Angeles International Airport

Services: Architectural design

HNTB is the lead architectural designer for the Automated People Mover stations and maintenance facility at LAX, which will become the main artery for travelers coming into and leaving the airport. The design will offer a lasting impression for those using the system, with a mid-century modern aesthetic that reflects the City of Los Angeles. This includes elements of strong horizontality, simplicity, indoor/ outdoor connection and artistic use of material elements such as concrete, steel and glass.

Planning

Master Plan Update, Tampa International Airport

Services: Planning

Working for the Hillsborough County Aviation Authority, HNTB completed the Master Plan for Tampa International Airport in 2013 and finalized updates to the plan in 2018. The update suggested a phased approach for expansion to ultimately accommodate 34 million annual passengers. Doing this required relocation of facilities to remove a large number of cars from the main terminal roadways.

Terminal 4 Customs and Border Protection Facility, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport

This upgrade and reconstruction of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Border Protection facility will expedite passenger and baggage processing and present a new face of Phoenix for arriving international passengers. A design-build process was used to seamlessly deliver this project on behalf of the airport, airlines, designer and builder. Services: Planning

Runway Incursion Mitigation Studies, Clark County Department of Aviation

Services: Planning

HNTB completed comprehensive Runway Incursion Mitigation studies for both McCarran International Airport and North Las Vegas Airport that evaluated opportunities to further

improve airfield safety, meet current FAA design standards, balance the capacity needs of the facilities, and maintain both airports as attractive places for aviators to operate.

Work included comprehensive airfield and airspace simulations to assess the potential impacts to the airfield and its many diverse users. Studies at both airports also included full GIS data collection and complete reconstruction of the ALP sets. The project yielded a set of valuable strategies to enhance airfield safety in a phased approach that maximizes FAA funding.

Mickey Leland International Terminal Redevelopment Program, George Bush Intercontinental Airport

Services: Planning

Encompassing a complete demolition and rebuild, this new international terminal will include gates capable of accommodating up to 15 wide-body aircraft or 30 narrow-body aircraft. It also will provide access to the sterile corridor and renovated Federal Inspection Services space to meet the anticipated growth in future passenger travel.

Engineering Design

Runway 16R Rehabilitation, Van Nuys Airport

Services: Preliminary planning, stakeholder coordination, final design, construction support

With the potential for a prolonged closure to one of the busiest private jet runways in the world, HNTB assisted Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) with the innovative solutions needed to deliver this highly visible project on-time and under budget.

With the runway being so critical to airport operations, it was imperative that closures were to a minimum. A review of operations by HNTB led the team to determine that the runway could be shortened by 3,000 feet, freeing up area and enabling construction to continue while still serving active air traffic.

HNTB also partnered with LAWA on a detailed stakeholder engagement process to explain the need for the project and to disseminate regular updates to those directly impacted. This led to a completed project that met both the needs of the airport and surrounding community.

Project highlights include:

• Unique phasing approach to minimize runway closures

• Shortened runway from 8,000 ft to 5,000 ft

• Pavement design to meet the 20-year Federal Aviation Administration standard

Runway 9C/27C, O’Hare International Airport

Services: Lead designer

At 11,245 feet long and 200 feet wide, Runway 9C/27C is engineered to Federal Aviation Administration Design Group VI standards and can accommodate all aircraft flying today, including the A380, Boeing 747-8 and cargo aircraft.

As a primary arrival runway, it helps balance flight activity between the north and south airfields and associated effects on neighboring communities.

Construction required careful sequencing to decommission Runways 14L/32R and 14R/32L while also relocating and replacing several airport facilities. The project was successfully coordinated to ensure that 100% of airport operations were maintained during construction.

• New airfield configuration reduces bad weather delays by 9% and overall delays by 79%

Delta Air Lines Hangar, Los Angeles International Airport

Services: Hangar planning and design, architectural and engineering design, construction administration

Delta Airlines commissioned HNTB to deliver multiple, complex projects under strict program budgets and schedules, and enabled the airline to relocate from Terminal 5 to Terminals 2 and 3. From airside apron work to a new hangar, GSE relocation, and deferred maintenance, these important projects required extensive FAA, airport, Los Angeles department of Building and Safety, and Los Angeles Fire Department approvals.

The new hangar is designed to service Delta’s largest airplane in its fleet, the Boeing 777, and a mix of smaller aircraft. It serves as the airline’s maintenance base along with ground service for LAX. The complex includes line storage and a maintenance and parts distribution facility.

Runway 13R-31L and Taxiway C Phase 1, Dallas Love Field Airport

Services: Final design, environmental documentation, alternatives study, bidding phase services, construction phase services

Using a cutting-edge design method and adhering to high standards for sustainability, the 8,800-foot primary commercial air carrier runway, Runway 13R-31L, at Dallas Love Field was completely reconstructed to meet Federal Aviation Administration design criteria while enhancing airfield safety and improving airfield efficiencies.

Working alongside the City of Dallas Department of Aviation for over a decade, HNTB served as a trusted advisor to the client and provided a variety of services to ensure successful and timely delivery of the project.

The project included demolition of the existing pavement, reconstruction of a portion of parallel Taxiway C, new connector taxiways to the runway, upgrades to storm drainage and the runway safety areas and new lighting. In keeping with the airport’s commitment to the environment and sustainability, construction practices aligned with the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure rating criteria.

Airfield Safety Improvement Program, Long Beach Airport

At one point, the FAA had considered the Long Beach Airport one of five in the United States with the highest risk for runway incursions.

Identified in an HNTB-led runway incursion mitigation (RIM) study, the highlight of Long Beach Airport’s multi-year program to restore its runways was the implementation of the first four RIM study recommendations. With the study, program and construction now complete, the number of hot spots has been reduced from seven to zero and airfiled

To limit project impacts, HNTB worked closely with airport operations as well as airport tenants, including Southwest Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Gulfstream and Ross Aviation to develop tailored construction sequencing plans.

Airport Redevelopment Program, Salt Lake City International Airport

Services: Civil engineer of record

As part of SLC’s redevelopment program, HNTB has been responsible for design, bidding and construction services for all civil engineering program elements, including:

• Landside: airport roadways, parking areas, elevated roadway bridge structures and roadway lighting.

• Airside: taxiways, taxi lanes and ramp areas, service roadways, underground pedestrian tunnel, hydrant fueling system, airfield lighting, security checkpoints, airport operation area fencing and walls.

• TRAX: airport station layout, track alignment and design, overhead catenary system and signal control systems design.

• Site-wide: design and coordination of sitewide underground utilities, including water, sanitary sewer and natural gas; pump stations, storm drainage collection and conveyance system, duct bank layouts, site demolition and erosion control.

HNTB also developed detailed construction phasing and access drawings for landside, airside, and TRAX to accommodate construction of new facilities and sequential demolition of existing facilities to maintain critical airside and landside airport operations.

Consolidated Tunnel, O’Hare International Airport

Services: Engineer of record

HNTB is serving as engineer of record through final design of an efficient and sustainable tunnel system that will connect the O’Hare International Airport’s new Global Terminal to new Satellite Concourses S1 and S2. The 3,400-linear-foot tunnel system will consist of a series of tunnel cells for a future APM; a secure pedestrian corridor; a sterile pedestrian corridor for international arrivals at S1; a sterile baggage tunnel; a tug tunnel; and a utility tunnel that will provide heating, cooling, domestic water and communication system connections to the satellite concourses from the main H&R plant.

In addition to the civil and structural design of the tunnel, HNTB has performed a code analysis identifying governing codes for design and construction; provided a list of permits required; and developed a fire, left safety, and egress strategy based on the requirements as outlined in the Chicago Building Code and NFPA 130.

United Airlines Operations Center

Services: Civil engineer of record

In a continuation of service to United Airlines and the Los Angeles International Airport, HNTB served as civil engineerof-record on the airline’s new hangar and technical operations center. The firm’s work included developing both airside and landside site improvements, aircraft parking positions and extensive utility systems. HNTB also completed permitting and provided construction support services.

The completed, LEED Gold certified project allows United Airlines to consolidate their aircraft maintenance operations into a single, 27-acre campus at LAX. As a result, all aircraft, ground services equipment, and facilities maintenance operations are relocated to this location. The facility includes a dual widebody hangar, a 16bay GSE maintenance building, vehicular loading docks, and all required utilities and special systems.

Environmental Services

Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority

Services: General plan, NEPA documentation

HNTB assisted the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority in advancing commercial development of a 416-acre property known as Western Lands at the western boundary of Dulles International Airport. HNTB worked with MWAA’s real estate management staff to complete a series of pre-development decisions and obtain regulatory agency buy-in as a prerequisite to project design and construction. This included delivering a general plan that MWAA used to establish a framework of comprehensive planning, zoning and subdivision decisions for the primary street and utility grids. HNTB also prepared a Programmatic Environmental Assessment (EA) to obtain FAA approval on the general plan. Completion of the Programmatic EA allowed MWAA to market the property whole or subdivided, for lease or purchase.

Maryland Aviation Administration

Services: Comprehensive environmental planning

Since 2011, HNTB has provided comprehensive environmental planning services for both the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall and Martin State Airports. Our services have included NEPA documentation, categorical exclusions, environmental assessments and written re-evaluations; wetland and forest resource delineations; new comprehensive storm water management (SWM) plan development; SWM submission reviews, including erosion and sediment control; air quality assessments, including greenhouse gas emissions; peer reviews; staff augmentation; and obstruction analysis. HNTB also has provided technical staff augmentation to support the Office of Planning and Environmental Services noise office since 2017.

City of Phoenix Aviation Department

Services: Environmental planning, NEPA documentation

Since 2007, HNTB has provided environmental planning services on an as-needed basis to the City of Phoenix Aviation Department. Services have included development of NEPA documentation, categorical exclusions and environmental assessments for PhoenixGoodyear, Deer Valley and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airports to support multiple airport improvements. Additional services provided include noise analysis as well as assisting the aviation department by supplying staff to answer and respond to noise complaints. HNTB has managed specialty subcontractors to meet natural resource compliance needs such as wetland mitigation monitoring and burrowing owl relocations.

Denver International Airport

Services: Environmental planning, noise analysis

HNTB developed the first and only Part 150 Study conducted at Denver International, which featured a unique Extended Future NEM that evaluated aircraft noise exposure at the ultimate airport build-out with a 12-runway configuration and nearly 1.2 million annual passenger operations. Since 2003, HNTB has delivered Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) NEMs biennially in addition to assisting the airport with environmental services and NEPA documentation, including the re-evaluation of Denver’s environmental impact statement to allow for construction of the airport’s sixth runway. HNTB is now assisting the airport with environmental review for the development of a seventh runway to meet future capacity needs.
