For rooms that are decorated with mostly cool colors, such as blue, select a white that has cooler undertones. These tones go great with the deeply saturated blues found in rugs, artwork, carpeting or upholstery, and offers a sharp contrast and a clean look. These cooler white hues also work great in rooms that get a lot of natural light.

Pure, bright white will work in any style room – modern, traditional, rustic, or even a combination of design themes. Pure white hues contain the least amount of undertone color, so they will support any contrasting color you choose, making it pop the most.

Warm Rooms If you have lots of warm furnishings – such as a burnt orange sofa or rug – or natural materials, like wood, a white with a warm undertone based in yellow or red is probably your best bet. Warm whites help create smooth transitions from room to room.

So, head over to your local paint store or home improvement store and select some samples and start testing what hues work best in the space you intend to paint. As with any paint project, painting a sample before committing to a color is important. But it’s even more important when choosing a shade of white. While the white you choose may look one way during the day in direct light, the undertones will come out at night and potentially reveal a shade you didn’t have in mind at all.
