My first day at College... what do I do? Once you have picked up your timetable and membership card, you are expected to attend a welcome talk from our Principal, Angela Williams. Following this, you are free to look around the College and familiarise yourself with our campus. There is also a ‘Freshers Fair’ in the dining area where you can find out more about college life. You might want to leave the campus to familiarise yourself with the surrounding area. Have a look at your timetable and make sure it includes classes for all the subjects on which you enrolled. If your timetable is not what you expected, or you don’t understand it, then please go along to our student help area which is called the ‘Student Guidance Centre’.

What is induction? This is a four week period for you to experience College life and the values we have. You will also get to know your teachers and they will get to know you. Your teachers will begin to understand where your strengths are and how we can help you achieve your goals. Alongside your lessons, you will also attend tutorials where you will meet your Progress Tutor. They will help you settle into college life and enjoy your time here. Group tutorials and regular one-to-one reviews are a key element of this support.
How do I know how well I am performing at College? At the start of the year, we’ll set you individual subject target grades which we expect you to aspire to. These will be explained fully in your subject induction period. At set periods during the year, your teachers will record how they think you are performing in relation to your target grade; this is called your ‘progress grade’. More information including progress review dates are available here http://www.huddnewcoll.ac.uk/parentscarers/reports Teachers and progress tutors continually monitor your progress. This will be done in class and in your 1-1 meetings with your progress tutor. If you need support to help you achieve your goals, we will talk to you about it.
We have a live information portal called Cedar where teachers and progress tutors will record conversations, attendance, progress, grades etc. You and your parents can access this portal ... take a look and see what is there! Your username and password will be the same as you use for the college network. This will be explained in more detail during your early tutorials. Your parents will receive a letter letting them know how to access the portal and this will also contain their login details.

All studies and statistics show that students attending over 95% of the time gain better grades than those who attend less. You must let us know in advance where possible if you need time off college. If you are ill, you must ring us each morning (before 9:30am) to let us know. We have a direct line for this 01484 355105. Your Progress Tutor will give you more information about attendance and discipline but you can view in-depth information in the ‘Student Guidance Centre’ area of Moodle.
What can I do when I am not in my lessons? When you are not timetabled for subject lessons, you have the opportunity to take part in the activities described in the ‘College Life’ section of this booklet. You can use the IT/study facilities or even visit our fantastic Sports Centre which houses our new Fitness Suite and other sports facilities. You should also use the study areas around college to complete work for your chosen subjects.
For refreshments, we have a deli-shop, an i-shop and a main catering area. These are all situated in the main dining area. There is also an IT Media café located in the MultiMedia Centre which has a Costa coffee bar. You can use these facilities anytime you are not in a timetabled class, you do not have to wait for an official ‘lunchtime’. At college, you are also able to go off campus when you are not in lessons - just make sure you are back in time!
How do I have my say? Here at HNC we love to learn from you. We place a very strong emphasis on the involvement of our students in the running and organisation of the college. We are keen to ensure that students shape our future direction and we seek student views in various ways. We have a very active Student Union that you can become part of, we have student ambassadors, course representatives and student governors. We also hold surveys, ballots and focus groups throughout the year. We have a student ideas box located in the Student Guidance Centre.
How do I get to College? We work with local companies to provide a reliable and cost-effective transport service to students who live at a distance from the college. There are college buses which we subsidise for which you need to buy a pass. You can also get a half-fare bus pass for public transport; this is called a ‘Metro Scholars Photo Card’. As an environmentally friendly college, we encourage students to ride their bikes to college. We have secure storage facilities for your use. To get more information, please visit our Student Guidance Centre.
What if I need financial help? If you come to college, you may be eligible to receive a 16-18 Bursary, or free school meals, depending on your household income. If you think you might be eligible to receive a 16-18 Bursary, or free schools meals, please visit our website at www. huddnewcoll.ac.uk for more information about these bursaries or see the Finance Team who are located in the Multi-Media Centre. Finance is open 10am to 2pm.
If you do not qualify for a 16-18 Bursary, or free school meals, you can apply for additional funding from the College’s Hardship Fund if you experience exceptional financial hardship during your time at college. The fund is there to help you to cover the costs of attending college, such as travel, equipment, textbooks and attendance on college study visits. Awards are means tested and each case is considered on an individual basis.
