MOOD BOARD

When trying to find direction and inspiration for creating my Digipak it was important to me be able to align with what I heard sonically with the visual aesthetic. Another thing I wanted to take into consideration is also the chosen name for the project by the artist ‘Midnight Orphan’. I was struck by the title of the album as I really felt it was something that could be interpreted in many different ways therefore it was able to manifest in a range of ways visually. The art that I found to be appeasing when putting tougher a mood board were ones that incorporated elements of surrealism and abstract art. The reason being is that it could be argued that as well as being aesthetically pleasing while still simultaneously invoking most intrigue in an audience due to their bizarre and challenging appearance. The range of symbolism that can be packed into this style of art is vast, Stuart Hall said that meanings are encoded by the producer and decoded by the audience based on this I felt that the more things to be decoded the more meaningful and memorable experience for the audience.Listening to the Midnight Orphan Ep can be described as a dreamy and ethereal experience, the collection of sounds come together to create a soft luscious and spacious sounds. The combination of these sounds in a different setting could also been seen as moody and melancholic, it was the marrying of these sounds as well as some of the darker lyrics and song titles ‘Devil’, ‘Coma’ that led me to the conclusion the vivid style of surrealism art was the best choice.
