WELCOME from the President On behalf of the entire Hill-Murray community, I’d like to welcome you to today’s game as we celebrate 60 years of athletic excellence. I grew up only blocks away from Aldrich Arena and enjoyed skating here as a youngster, playing games here as a student, and watching great rivalries as an adult. I see now that the true legacy of Hill-Murray is our tradition of athletic and academic achievement and the character that competition builds in our athletes. We are proud of our student athletes and the preparation and commitment these players make to develop as leaders with moral character - which will last long after the final whistle has blown. I hope you will join us in celebrating ALL of the players and their commitment to success. Let’s also commend the parents, families and community members who support them on their journey. Go Pioneers!

WELCOME from the Athletic Director Another winter season is upon us! We at Hill-Murray are very excited to support one of the best girls hockey programs in Minnesota. This year should be no different. Lead by very experienced Head Coach, Bill Schafhauser, the girls hockey players look to have another very successful season. As Athletic Director, I want to ask that all participants, in whatever role you play, please be positive role models and help make this a great experience for everyone! Enjoy each and every game, and let’s represent Hill-Murray in a way that makes everyone proud to be a Pioneer! GO PIONEERS!

WELCOME from the Head Coach Dear friends of the HMGH community, Well, it is hockey time! On behalf of the entire coaching staff and the players, we thank all of our families, friends, and sponsors for their support and commitment for the upcoming 2017-2018 season! As I enter my 11th season as Head Coach of the girls’ program, I am struck by the nature of what that time has given me. Often, the first thing that comes to mind are the common cliches that everyone thinks of: “where does the time go?”, “the kids grow up so fast”, or “don’t blink or you will miss it”. Cliches have, by their very nature, kernels of truth within them, and this is certainly true when I reflect on the young ladies whom I have had the privilege to coach. I can safely speak for my talented and loyal Assistant Coach Caesare Engstrom (who has been with me since day one) when I say that we have simply enjoyed every single minute of our journey over the past ten years! Caesare is in charge of too many things and has too many athletic accomplishments to list here but her primary focus is overseeing our defensive core. She also runs our summer camp, does tons of administrative support, serves as team psychologist and keeps the “old guys in line” as she likes to say. I had to mention a few! Filling out our staff is Head JV Coach Doug Long, his 3rd season with HMGH and 28th as a Coach. Doug also serves as our Goalie Coach for the program and his input and experience is invaluable to the players and the coaches. Our JV Assistant Coach is former Pioneer Jenny Magill ('12). This is her 2nd season with us and she is in charge of the defensemen. Jenny was part of the first HMGH team to reach the state tournament in 2011. She attended Hamline University where she also played hockey. I also want to recognize the effort and passion of previous coaches, their staffs, and other coaches over our tenure who have helped make HMGH one of the premier high school programs in Minnesota. As I referenced above, I consider it a privilege to coach our players. They are all high character, passionate, skilled, and competitive athletes who are willing to do what it takes to experience a successful season. As coaches, we also consider their accomplishments in the classroom and in their communities as another piece of the puzzle of a successful season and why they are great examples of what makes Hill-Murray such a special school. Every season is a challenge and a ton of fun! Who knows where the journey will end but I know the coaches and the players will give it their best effort and we all appreciate your support! Go Pioneers!!
2017-18 SEASON | 5
HISTORY & HIGHLIGHTS In 1994, the MSHSL took a leap of faith by voting to become the first state high school association in the country to sanction girls’ ice hockey as a varsity sport. On February 24, 1995 with the eyes of the nation on them, the puck was dropped in the first ever State High School Girl’s Tournament in the country held at Aldrich Arena. The four-team tournament was won by Apple Valley 2-0 versus South St. Paul to become the first state girl’s high school hockey champion. It was just the beginning of bigger things to come for the future of girls’ hockey.
1995-96
A tradition of hockey excellence is built over time. Already with a long, storied history on the boy’s hockey side, the Hill-Murray girl’s hockey program began their journey down that icy road for the first time in the 1995-1996 season. To quote the H-M '96 yearbook about their inaugural season: “It’s not a worn path we travel on as we move forward, but one we have to create as we go along.” Starting during the 1996-1997 season, a Junior Varsity team was added.
2000-01
MS. GOALIE 2004 - EMILY BROOKSHAW Senior, Emily Brookshaw, won the prestigious Ms. Goalie award in 2004. Presented by Let’s Play Hockey, Ms. Goalie is the ultimate honor as a goaltender and also represents academic excellence, a commitment to community service and sportsmanship. Emily went on to play at Bemidji State University.
2006-07 “Making History” was the headline in the yearbook from 2007 and history was made as the lady Pioneers won their first ever Conference Championship and set a precedent as HMGH has now won 11 Conference Championships in a row!!
2010-11
During the 2000-2001 season, the Pioneers enjoyed their first winning season in a big way by going 12-6-5. The core values of the program and a talented group of coaches and players elevated the team to a ranking of 6th in the state after going on an eight game winning streak.
6 | HILL-MURRAY GIRLS HOCKEY
Hill-Murray girls’ hockey goes to state for the first time in school history! HMGH beats Roseville 4-3 before a full house at Aldrich Arena to advance to the 2011 State Tournament where they placed 4th. The experience would prove to be valuable in the years to come! Hannah Brandt becomes the first Pioneer to be a member of the USA National Team participating on the U-18 team in Sweden.
HANNAH BRANDT - MS. HOCKEY 2012 Hannah Brandt is the first HMGH player to be named MS. Hockey! Hannah finished an amazing career as a Pioneer with an astounding 192 goals, 142 assists and 334 points over her five seasons with HMGH. Hannah continued her career at the University of MN and has a LONG list of accomplishments including, multiple National Championships, All-American honors for athletics and academics, USA National Team member and current Olympian to list a few! 2013

THIRD PLACE AT STATE 2015-16
A “3-peat” was definitely in reach, especially after a remarkable regular season where the Pioneers were undefeated with a record of 24-0-1 heading into the semifinal game of the State Tournament against Maple Grove. The team played their hearts out but lost a heartbreaker 1-0. In a true testament to that team’s character and our program’s, the Pioneers came back the next morning and beat Edina to capture the 3rd place trophy and a record of 29-1-1.
2015 COACH OF THE YEAR BY USA TODAY
After an amazing run in the 2013 State Tournament and a 2nd2014 place finish, the girls already had it in their minds that CLASS AA STATE CHAMPIONS KAPOSIA CLASSIC CHAMPIONS • CLASSIC SUBURBAN CHAMPIONS • SECTION 4AA CHAMPIONS “next year we are going to win it!” before we even got back #1 Leah Patrick #11 Becca Zarembinski #27 Lindsey Featherstone to school. The “One Team…One motto started that #2 Taylor Lambert #12 Mekenzie Steffen #31 Mari Dream” Johnson 26-3-1 #3 Laura Anderson #13 Samantha Boyer Mgr: Haley LaValle #4 Taylor Wemple #15 Rachel Herzog Coaches: summer camp and carried us through another successful #5 Jessica Bonfe #17 Gretta Steigauf Bill Schafhauser “ONE TEAM... #6 Jac Kaasa #18 Kate Smith Caesare Engstrom season and indeed the girls did win the first girl’s state #7 Sarah Bobrowski #19 Kenzie Prater Jake Bobrowski ONE DREAM” #8 Kennedy Houge #20 Megan Toninato Elliott Hogue championship history of the program by defeating #9 Brittney Anderson in #21the Lexi Klein #10 Haylee Blinkhorn #22 Abigail Boreen Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the final by a score of 5-3 and a record of 26-3-1.
STATE CHAMPIONS 2014-15 Back to back State Championships- are you kidding? No, the 14-15 team carried on where they left off from the previous season on a mission to win it all again. Relying on experience and the team character that we are known for, the Pioneers battled hard and defeated Minnetonka in the final by a score of 2-1 for their 2nd consecutive State Championship and a record of 25-5.
2016-17 After graduating nine seniors from the previous year, most being 2-time champions and 4-time State Tournament participants, it was a year of transition for the Pioneers. This was a time for the younger players to step up and new leaders to take over from those who led before them. This young team did well and returned to the State Tournament for the 5th time in as many years and 6th time in 7 seasons. They definitely carried on the tradition of success of the HMGH program finishing 4th and hungry to rise above that finish for the 20172018 season!

HILL-MURRAY TO KOREA: Girls Hockey Alumnae, Hannah and Marissa Brandt ready to play in 2018 Winter Olympic Games
When the Brandt sisters were 5 or 6 years old, their parents sent them to a Korean culture camp. Hannah — the younger, American-born sibling — loved it so much that she wanted to go back every year. Korean-born Marissa, who came to Minnesota as an infant, felt less enthusiastic. “It’s the only time I was ever exposed to anything Korean, and I didn’t really want to be exposed to it,” Marissa said. “I just wanted to be like Hannah, and like everyone else.” The best place to do that, she learned, was on a hockey rink. Much to her surprise, that most Minnesotan of games became a portal to her past — and a springboard to the Olympics for the sisters from Vadnais Heights. Marissa, 24, is a defenseman for the South Korean team that will represent the host country at the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang. Hannah, 23, was named to the U.S. national team last month and is on track to make her Olympic debut. Marissa has spent the past two years shuttling back and forth from South Korea, returning for the first time since Greg and Robin Brandt adopted her when she was 4 ½ months old. Her national-team jersey and her new passport both bear her birth name, Yoon Jung Park. That isn’t the only thing now separating the tightly bound siblings, who played together nearly constantly from youth hockey through their days at Hill-Murray. Hannah (‘12), former Ms. Hockey, 3 x All-American and All-Time Leading Scorer for the Gophers, will head to Pyeongchang with an American team favored to win gold. Marissa (‘11), who played at Division III powerhouse Gustavus Adolphus, is part of a fledgling program in a country where fewer than 300 women play the game. After showing little interest in her roots as a child, Marissa is soaking up Korean culture during her long stays in the country. Part of the fun of the Olympics, she said, will be sharing that with Hannah, via the sport that solidified their sisterly bond. “Playing hockey together all those years made us closer and closer,” said Hannah, who won three NCAA titles during a Gophers career that ended in 2016. “It’s like you always have your best friend with you. “It’s crazy that it happened this way, that we’re both going to the Olympics for the first time. It’s going to be so cool.” 8 | HILL-MURRAY GIRLS HOCKEY

A Christmas Tradition by HMGH What evokes the coming of Christmas more than poinsettias and beautiful spruce tip arrangements? The annual HMGH Poinsettia Fundraiser has become the "go-to source" for your holiday plant decorations. Players and parents start knocking on doors and calling on businesses in September to offer high-quality holiday plants that people look forward to purchasing year after year. Proceeds from sales help support Hill-Murray girls hockey so they can continue to be successful and recognized as one of the top programs in the state! Managing a successful fundraising campaign takes tons of time, organizational skills and a passion for our program. Volunteer coordinator Jodi Houge has managed this fundraiser for many years now and her efforts are the main reason that our sales keep increasing each year. Jodi spends countless hours helping the girls and Coach Schaf make this annual fundraiser a huge success! On behalf of the entire HMGH community- thank you, Jodi! PS- Keep this on your radar for next year and contact Coach Schaf in the beginning of October to be included in this annual holiday HMGH fundraiser! Deliveries start the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

New Digs
For the past 11 years, Harding Arena has been the primary practice rink for the HMGH program. Prior to that, the girls bounced around various east metro arenas lugging their bags from rink to rink. In 2015, through the generosity of supporters of HMGH, our locker room for the Varsity team at Harding was updated with new stalls, lighting, flooring and a whole new vibe where the players love to hang out! (And to stay warm because Harding gets really cold and makes the players skate really fast!) We are fortunate to play our home games at the storied Aldrich Arena where the first MN State Girls Hockey Tournament was held in 1995. Aldrich Arena, also the home of Hill-Murray’s extremely successful boy's program, is one of the best rinks in the Twin Cities to watch a hockey game. With the addition of the boy's locker rooms being constructed in 2014, trophy cases were also added and between the boys and the girls programs the cases are rapidly filling up and are a testament to the efforts of the many players and coaches from the past and present that truly represent the tradition of Pioneer Hockey. 2017-18 SEASON | 13

Securing the Cloud Generation We Are The Cloud Generation. The Cloud Generation is everyone who lives and works in this unique era— as computing breaks the boundaries of desktops and data centers to embrace the mobile, social, global, crowd-sourced, always-on realities
of modern life. It’s a time when critical data, applications and infrastructure are shifting from “behind the firewall” to “running on the cloud.” Some of us are “all in.” Some are only 20% there. Yes, it’s liberating. And yes, it’s chaotic. Symantec is here to help.

MARIAH KEOPPLE
To me, being a captain means that I’m an outlet for any of the girls on the team. A captain is someone who leads the team to be their best, and as a captain I aspire to do just that. Furthermore, I am so grateful to be given this opportunity, and I, along with the other captains, will go through any obstacles thrown my way. I wish for HMGH to grow together under the captains’ leadership, and we will have one of the best years ever! I’m so excited to put in the work in the summer and the 17-18 season!

Hill-Murray School OVERVIEW
Hill-Murray is a Catholic Benedictine prep school for grades 6-12. Every day, our students find a home at Hill-Murray, a place where they are known, loved and respected. Here, they are encouraged to grow in their faith, and be thoughtful about the way they treat themselves and the world around them. Originally founded to provide Catholic education to students living on the East side of St. Paul and inner-ring suburbs, over the last ten years, the school has broadened its demographic base, and now draws from a 40-mile radius, from Forest Lake to the North, Hastings to the South and Hudson, Wisconsin to the East. The current student population is 796, approximately 80 percent of whom are Catholic and 10 percent are students of color.

Train Big, Feel Big, Play Big!
Minnesota Strength Academy is a professional strength and conditioning/speed camp that focuses completely on the overall athletic development of hockey athletes that are ready to learn and intensify their off-ice hockey training. We focus on using the correct form and techniques to increase lineal and lateral speed along with increasing overall body strength and explosiveness in a controlled environment with strict supervision and professional instruction. The goal of our off-ice hockey camps is to get our athletes to move their body more efficiently with more strength, speed, power and flexibility through a full range of motion increasing their functional movement and improving overall athletic conditioning. In addition to lifting and running, our camps will be emphasizing the importance of nutrition and sleep that every athlete needs to fully understand and implement to fully recuperate and maximize their gains.
