A Quarterly Publication Promoting Arts and Culture in Revelstoke Welcome to the first issue of R e v ed! , a locally created publication designed to promote Arts and Culture in Revelstoke. My name is Heather Lea and it is with much pleasure that I present to you what I hope will be a source for good entertainment! When I came to Revelstoke five years ago, it was with an admittedly ignorant

sex shop? For me it didn’t get much better than living and working in this little town with it’s boundless playgrounds and definite seasons. Revelstoke has charm and a certain energy that draws people in and makes them stay. When I decided to buy a house and commit once and for all to this town, I started noticing things. One of

to a CD. If you are reading this now, that’s a good sign. Getting Reved! on the streets required a lot of work in a short period of time and I can only attribute its success to the enormous amount of support I received from friends, family and local businesses. Never once did I receive a negative word

Ar tist in Pr of ile ge thr ee Artist Prof ofile ile,, see pa pag three sense of what the town was all about. I worked for Canadian Mountain Holidays at Galena Lodge, so most of my time was spent up there in the woods. During my weeks off I would drive to Calgary to mooch off my parents, but that felt wrong. Not the mooching part, but the part where I left the mountains to drive to a city. Most people do that the other way around. It wasn’t long, though, before I traded in the folks for some unsuspecting friends who had couches and a like-minded obsession to ski. I soon fell in love with Revelstoke. Sure it may lack a few things, but what could go wrong in a place with four liquor stores, three Chineses restaurants and one tasteful

those things was: there is a lot of talent here! We have painters, woodworkers, potters, actors, photographers, musicians, singers, writers and movie producers… stuff is going on! People are doing things and doing them well! But one thing has always stood out in my mind: we need to brag more. Do you agree? Could we not use more awareness for local talent? More attendance at local events? With Reved! ed!, I’d like to extend what we as a community have to offer. Not only to visitors, but to locals as well, who may not have realized that the guy down the street is actually playing the flute, not listening

(at least not to my face). In more than a few instances, I was impressed and moved with the generosity of our tight-knit town. On that note, thanks for reading, now go find something to do! Hea ther Lea Heather

Scene it! When you think of the One Twelve Resturant and Lounge, do you think: mood lighting, atmosphere and dress code? Me too, but I ventured in there in my jeans one Saturday night to watch the quirky, eclectic osier Desrosier osier,, works of François Desr independent filmaker. Frank’s short films have won him a Best Creative Concept Award as well as the admiration of some close fans. Working from home with his high-tech computer equipment, Frank directs, produces, edits and markets his work while also creating soundtracks for the films. Can you say talented? If you’re looking for something out of the ordinary, saunter in to the One Twelve, Saturdays from 9-12pm. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, it ’s all good. Frank can be reached at phony_frank@yahoo.com.

Suppor tists! Supportt Local Ar Artists! Stumped for a gift idea? Got a hundred weddings to go to? In light of graduation, this gess of poem by Amie Bur Burg Revelstoke Secondary is fitting.

The Butterfly How carefree is the butterfly. Floating from flower to flower she stands under her purple shelter prepared and waiting for a shower. Wings open before taking flight, beautiful colours for all to see They snap a picture as she poses, exclaiming, “Momma Momma, watch me!” Flying through the sky so carelessly, without a destination in mind. She goes to school each and every day, not aware of what she may find. Dancing on dew-drops at sunrise, leaving a silent path of words being sung What will she become when she grows up? Now she cares not…she is young. Gliding on rainbows and sunshine rays, has lost it’s exciting effect. She’s growing up fast and beginning to wonder, what she can do to make life perfect. In what direction does her heart lead? How will she get there? Will she even succeed? Now she is older and has learned so much, She watches as they flutter by, Closes her eyes and begins to think: How carefree was the butterfly? Amie Burgess, 18

Ar tist in Pr of ile: Artist Prof ofile: Nicola McGar ry McGarr It’s hard not to notice one of Nicola’s paintings. Her signature knack for taking Revelstoke’s natural surroundings and creating rich, vivid scenes makes Nicola’s work usually the most refreshing object in the room. The self-taught artist describes her interest in wanting to paint as something that stemmed from a series of events; beginning in high school and developing throughout her adult life. When one friend in particular, a potter from Nelson, asked Nicola to do a show with her sometime, Nicola was flattered: “My style has always seemed a little kindergarten, so having someone like Lisa say she liked the style and that it could work, was inspiring.” This inspiration also comes while simply walking or driving around close to home. “I prefer to paint something real and landscape, more natural…but I also like funky pots and couches. I’m not interested in my art looking like a photo. I like to take nature and re-create it with a funky style.” Exploring around town, Nicola is constantly watching the mountains, converting to memory various shapes and lines, then she gets busy drawing. Nicola credits Woolsey Creek Café for being so supportive in displaying her work. “Most of my art went to people I know or know of, all locals. That to me was so supportive, a huge confidence builder.” On being an artist, Nicola has this to say: “It’s a business if you want to be able to live off it, so conviction is contin ued ne xt column... continued next
