SO HO CHI

Hong Kong, China

So Ho Chi is a multimedia composer whose works ranging from instrumental, vocal and choral works to electroacoustic composition, field recordings, music performance as theatre, and 360-degree video Growing up in postcolonial Hong Kong, identity has been a recurring theme in his works. Often focusing on the re-interpreting and recontextualizing the sonic and performative materials appropriated, he creates a new form or situation to the sound and performance as a mean to question the convention and re-imagining new possibilities of organization of the materials, to evoke questions hidden beneath the convention.

His works has been selected to perform in various music festivals, competitions and concerts, such as Gaudeamus Muziekweek, ISCM World Music Days 2019 Tallinn, Orkest de Ereprijs - Young Composer Meeting, Asian Composers' League, “Sound Forms” - a festival of multi-channel sound organized by Contemporary Musiking Hong Kong, Hong Kong Phil Composer Workshop – “Beyond the Ring”, and Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag Spring Festival

She is a scholarship holder of the Anny Felbermayr Foundation, as well as of the Deutsche Bank Foundation's scholarship programme ‘Musiktheater HEUTE’ - as part of which she is commissioned to compose a chamber opera for Ensemble MODERN (Premiere –Autmun’24)

She recently celebrated her composer’s debut in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein, where her work "BlurRed" was given its Austrian premiere by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSO) under the baton of Marin Alsop:

Tanja Elisa Glinsner's "BlurRed" for orchestra turned out to be an introspection into the traumatized worlds of the soul ( ) she transformed the orchestral apparatus into a cornucopia of horror with Richard Strauss-like sonority ( )

In addition to her work as a composer, she is active as mezzo-soprano

In 2023/24 she was the 3rd lady in W A Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz /Munich, (Con. Domonkos Hèja/ stage direction. Rosamund Gilmore) and as Mrs Reich in Otto Niccolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor (dir Hartmut Keil, ins Helen Malkowsky) at the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre (Vienna).

Most recently, she made her debut as alto soloist in Das Buch der sieben Siegeln under the baton of Manfred Honeck in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein

“O

Freunde, nicht diese Tönel”

Reimagining “Beethoven’s Symphony No.9" for Orchestra

In “O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!”, I intended to explore the idea between “rejected sound” - noise, and “unified sound” - harmony The dissonant chord of the 4th movement of Beethoven’s symphony no 9 is being re-orchestrate and deconstructed into different variations in which the foundational notes are according to harmonic series based on the sequence of the pitch in the opening phrase of the Baritone solo (A,E,D,C#,G,Bb,F), which is exactly the pitches constituted the dissonant chord in the beginning of the second exposition Each variations will morph and deconstructed, in different ways, into different kinds of tone cluster The harmonic content of the tone cluster is derived from the pitches in the Baritone phrase that those pitches is edited out to leave only the inharmonics of the sound

expresses true colors, such as red, violet, and yellow and is used to determine redness (reddish), greenish (greenish), etc.

It is to question the boundary between the “rejected sound” and “unified sound”, and any possible reconciliation between the rejected and the unified. Is the very act of rejecting a sound that there is order in the utopia Beethoven suggested and it is not for every kinds of voices, particularly for those in dissonance? Does utopia have to be constructed from suppressing and rejecting? There may not be an utopia, in Beethoven’s sense, on earth, but it might be possible that different voices could live peacefully together, albeit temporally.

sometimes called chroma, is the purity or strength of a color.

SCINTILLAE or ‘froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen’ for Orchestra

Symbols of community and of peace determine Schiller's pathetic statement and the particularly optimistic and partly transcendental impact of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Symbols of the circle are omnipresent here

With my composition "SCINTILLAE or ‘froh, wie seine Sonnen fliegen’ for Orchestra”, I would like to place these very statements in a symbolic, eternal context:

Based on the mandala symbolism, the theories on the individuation process of Carl G Jung, which are associated with the transcendental function of the circle number Pi, colorful, mandala-like, circular sound surfaces are to be formed, whose scintillae (- latin for "spark" -) or contemplative centers consist of motifs from Beethoven Ninth.

These circular areas follow each other at intervals determined by the number pi:

"Froh wie seine Sonnen fliegen durch des Himmels prächt'gen Planlaufet, Brüder, eure Bahn…" (Eng. "Joyful as his suns fly through heaven's magnificent plan - run, brothers, run your course ")

This results in several sequences of circular areas different solar orbits: In the background - above all this - a "starry sky" of overtonerich, atmospheric whispering sounds (- text elements from the "Ode to Joy") - with this I would like to "create an infinite space" for an immanent interaction of Schiller's textual, overtone-rich spherical level (starry sky) with Beethoven's instrumental, tonally more concrete, earthly level (solar orbits).

ENGLISH

Caressingly sweet and charming sound the harmonies of our life, and to the sense of beauty waft the flowers that for ever bloom

Peace and joy join in friendship, as the sporting of the waves; that which oppressed, rough and harsh, turns now to elation

When the magic of music prevails and the word’s solemnity speaks, something wondrous is created, night and tempests turn to light.

Outer peace, inner joy reign for the happy Yet in the spring sunshine of art light emerges from both.

Greatness that entered in our hearts blooms forth new and fair, a spirit has soared up, ringing out as a spirit choir

Accept then, you fair souls, in gladness the gifts of fair art If love and strength are wedded, the gods’ favour is bestowed upon mankind
