WELCOME

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Governors and the professional team of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County (HSPBC), I am pleased to present our 2023-2024 Season Guide. As you will see, this is a season full of experiences not to be missed.

Many events will relate to the first-ever Grand Exhibition of the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum, opening in November in an expanded exhibition space (SEE Exhibit, page 10). Endless Summer: Palm Beach Resort Wear, showcasing vintage fashion from the archives of the HSPBC and others, has generated welcome collaborations of many kinds.

As we contemplate beauty in fashion, we are thrilled to announce Estée Lauder and the legacy of the Lauder Family in Palm Beach as our 2023 Archival Evening Honoree (SEE Archival Evening, page 29).

As always, educational opportunities for all ages abound (SEE Calendar of Events, pages 6-9 and Education, page 45). In addition to in-person and virtual History Talks, a new lecture series titled “In Conversation With” will introduce you to notables from the fashion industry. The most up-to-date information on all our programs and events can always be found at pbchistory.org.

Art and Culture maintain our community’s sense of place as well as encourage personal growth and improved communication. The HSPBC is honored to provide a broad variety of opportunities for all to grow stronger in these ways.

If you are not already a member of the Historical Society, please consider joining at the level that fits you (SEE Membership, pages 56-57). Our members are the heart of our mission.

VISIT THE MUSEUM

The Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum is located on the second floor of the restored 1916 Historic Courthouse, 300 North Dixie Highway, in downtown West Palm Beach. Across the street is the modern courthouse.

To visit either the museum or the Historical Society of Palm Beach County (HSPBC), check in at the second-floor Greeter desk.

MUSEUM HOURS

Open: Monday–Saturday 10:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Admission: FREE with a suggested donation of $5.00 per person, except for Endless Summer exhibition. There will be a $10 Admission fee to enter the Grand Exhibition for non-member participants. Directions and Parking: See pbchistory.org/plan-your-visit.

The Museum is self-guided. Docents are available during operating hours to welcome visitors and present an introduction on the evolution of the building.

MUSEUM TOURS

Afternoon Mini Tours are available Monday–Friday at 3:00 pm. No reservations required. Large groups cannot be accommodated.

Standard History Tours of 60-90 minutes are booked for groups of 10-40 visitors on a first come, first served basis.

School Group Tours (Standard History Tour or Mock Trial with Tour) of 60-90 minutes are booked for groups of up to 40 students/4 teachers on a first come, first served basis.

Adult Mock Trials are arranged for a fee (SEE page 30).

A handicap-accessible entrance is located on the east side of the building on the 1st floor with elevators to the 2nd floor (museum level).

Endless Summer: Palm Beach Resort Wear

This season the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum will present its first-ever Grand Exhibition. Endless Summer will explore the impact Palm Beach made on resort fashion over the last 129 years, as it solidified itself as one of America’s premier luxury destinations, where winter comes to summer. In this top fashion hub, brands such as Gucci, Chanel, and St. John, as well as iconic fashion influencers such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Lilly Pulitzer, and others adopted fresh new looks, ingenuity, and a philanthropic spirit.

The Fashion Beaux Arts, a fashion and entertainment mecca in Palm Beach from 1916 to 1942, included the latest New York and Paris fashion houses, transforming Palm Beach into the winter fashion capital of the world. When the 1920s building boom that followed World War I caused a demand for accessible fashions from Europe, the rise of Worth Avenue began, and the Palm Beach look was born. After World War II, the Royal Poinciana Plaza was built, and the luxurious lifestyle in Palm Beach became synonymous with fashion, specifically resort wear.

A force in retail luxury fashion, Martha Phillips—joined by her daughter Lynn Manulis—brought leading couture designers to Martha, the boutique shop on Worth Avenue. Martha’s legacy lives on in the fashion icons she encouraged and promoted in the North American marketplace, including Valentino and Zang Toi.

The Johnson History Museum invited Cameron Silver, King of Vintage, to share his perspective as guest curator of Endless Summer: Palm Beach Resort Wear. Curated artifacts from many private collections, as well as Kent State University, the Pucci Archives, and the Long Island Museum of American Art, History, and Carriages, join treasures from the Historical Society of Palm Beach County’s Collection to showcase the importance of Palm Beach in fashion history.

There will be a $10 Admission fee to enter the Grand Exhibition for non-member participants over 18 years of age. School Group Tours include 2 FREE Teacher Admissions to Grand Exhibition per class, up to 25 students.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Hispanic Heritage Honoring Jorge Pesquera

As part of the HSPBC’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, an exhibition honoring Jorge Pesquera will be on display at the Johnson History Museum in the 1916 historic courtroom. This panel exhibit will complement the Conversation with Mr. Pesquera (SEE page 26) and include photographs that provide a closer look at his interesting and productive life to date.

After Germany dismembered

The Johnson History Museum will present an exhibit created by The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Stories of Rescue highlights the ordinary individuals, including ministers, housewives, and soldiers, that chose to intervene and help rescue Jews during World War II. Despite the risks, they took heroic measures to prevent genocide. Their acts of courage will not be forgotten.

Reminding viewers that the Holocaust story reaches us wherever we live, an addition to the exhibit will feature the grandparents of Palm Beach artist Serge Strosberg, who took part in the rescue effort. National Days of Remembrance

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County has been chosen by the School District of Palm Beach County to participate in the District Funded Community Field Trip Experience. This exhibit will be on display all year at the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum as part of its designation as a Holocaust education site.

JUNE 3, 2024

Pride

The month of June is celebrated nationally as LGBTQ+ Pride Month, a positive stand against violence in recognition of the Stonewall Riots in 1969 New York City. In June 2023, the Historical Society will honor the LGBTQ+ community in a celebration of moments of progress in their path to equal rights.

Yugoslavia and occupied Serbia in 1941, the Mandils, a Jewish family from Belgrade, escaped to Albania. There, Mosa Mandil opened a photography shop and hired Refik Veseli, a 16-year-old Albanian Muslim, as his apprentice. When the Mandils were threatened by deportation after Germany occupied Albania in September 1943, Veseli convinced his parents to hide the family in their home village, Krujë. The Mandil children posed as Muslims while their parents hid in the Veselis’ barn until liberation.

Eliot Kleinberg

Topic: Weird Florida (I and II)

Eliot Kleinberg is that rarest of Floridians: a native. Born in South Florida, he spent nearly four decades as a reporter, most of it at The Palm Beach Post. In addition to local news, he wrote extensively about Florida history, including a column, "Post Time." In 2019, he launched "Florida Time," which appeared in newspapers statewide. Kleinberg has written more than a dozen books on Florida, including Black Cloud on the Storm of 1928 and two Weird Florida books. He writes a Facebook blog on writing called "Something Went Horribly Wrong.” In celebration of the 25th anniversary of the hard cover release of Weird Florida, the author will entertain and educate the audience with examples of the incredible incidents in Florida history.

Ginger L. Pedersen, PhD

Topic: The Richard Hone Murder Case

As a storm raged along the shores of Lake Worth one night in 1902, Richard Hone, a naturalized citizen from England, sat in his home south of West Palm Beach writing to a sister in England. Nearby sat Hone's wife, reading by lamplight. Among the fits of light and cracks of thunder, the muzzle of a rifle burst through the window screen and fired, hitting Hone. Historian Ginger Pedersen, who grew up in Jupiter, will explore the mystery of this crime. In addition to a career in administration at Palm Beach State College, she co-authored Pioneering Palm Beach: The Deweys and the South Florida Frontier and Legendary Locals of West Palm Beach. Her newest book is Crime, Love, and Murder: Lena Clark, The Postmistress Killer.

Russell P. Kelley, born and raised in Palm Beach, is a lawyer and strategy advisor who represented global groups in Paris and London for decades. He is an engaged member of the Board of Governors of the Historical Society of Palm Beach County. This nostalgic journey through time is told through the Society's photographic collection.

Growing Up in Northern Palm Beach County: Boomer Memories from Dairy Belle to Double Roads

Northern Palm Beach County has its share of mysteries, from Sir Harry Oakes’ “haunted” mansion to James Munroe Munyon’s Fountain of Youth. The once-quaint little municipalities of Jupiter, Juno Beach, North Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Lake Park, Riviera Beach, and Singer Island have grown, but they haven’t lost their tropical charm. Author Ruth Hartman Berge, who grew up here in the 1960s and ‘70s, will share her memories of a Florida that no longer exists. She is the author of the former column, "The Florida You Don't Know," Betty Tales: The True Story of a Brave Bobblehead Cat, and a guide to writing fiction.

Oh, Florida!

To outsiders, Florida seems baffling. It’s a state where the voters went for Barack Obama twice, yet elected a Tea Party candidate as governor. Florida is touted as a carefree paradise, yet it’s also known for its perils—such as alligators, sinkholes, pythons, hurricanes, and sharks. It attracts 90 million visitors a year, some drawn by its impressive natural beauty, others bewitched by its manmade fantasies. Craig Pittman, award-winning journalist and author of Oh, Florida!, will explore those contradictions and how they fit together to make this the most interesting state.

Kevin McCarthy

African American Sites in Florida (updated 2019)

Dr. Kevin McCarthy has served in the Peace Corps, as a Fulbright professor, and 33 years as a professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Florida. He has had 77 books published, mostly about Florida, including Native Americans in Florida. Since retiring, he has taught in Vietnam and Spain. McCarthy’s African American Sites in Florida covers 67 counties that commemorate the role of African Americans. He will discuss the important role Blacks have had in making Florida the successful state it is today. They have risen from slave plantations in nineteenth-century Florida to be heads of corporations and members of Congress today.

Bob Lee

Bad Guys, Bullets, and Boat Chases: True Stories of Florida Game Wardens

With 30 years of backcountry patrol experience as a Florida wildlife officer, Bob Lee has lived through incidents of legend, including one of the biggest environmental busts in Florida history. His fascinating memoir reveals the danger and the humor in the unsung exploits of game wardens. From Live Oak to the Everglades, from the cattle ranches west of Lake Okeechobee to the inshore fishing grounds of Pine Island, these action-packed experiences span the state.

Holly Lynn Baumgartner

Banyan Trees and Blue Balloons: A South Florida Childhood

In this presentation, Dr. Holly Lynn Baumgartner shares a playful but moving memoir about growing up in South Florida with rich details of the unique Florida environment and how it has changed over decades. As a storyteller, she weaves the cultural history and biology of the region into the essays. Baumgartner's readings are supplmented with a slideshow of historical archival documents, botanical prints, and personal photos illustrating some of the places, flora and fauna, and activities she describes.

The premier benefit event of the HSPBC is Archival Evening, a much-anticipated dinner dance that highlights those whose achievements have substantially contributed to the unique character of this region.

This season the Historical Society of Palm Beach County invites the community to unite for a special event to pay homage to homegrown African American stars in music, art, and dance.

A multimedia montage will feature local musicians from the first era of the Sunset Lounge, which is soon to rise again. Some launched their careers at the Sunset alongside big names like Count Basie and James Brown. Jimmy “Bo” Horne and Benjamin T. Littles built national performing careers, and George McCrae went international. Shawn McCrae cut his teeth at the Sunset, founding the Derek Mack Band. Carle Vickers appeared in movies, music videos, and television shows and commercials. Joe Fisher, leader of The Chanteers vocal group (see photo) that originated at Roosevelt High School, was named one of the top 100 US radio broadcasters. Reginald Daniels played for the Jivin’ Jets at the Sunset Lounge in the 1960s and ‘70s.

The celebration will include a multi-panel exhibit on these accomplished Palm Beach County residents in the historic courtroom during February. Those who are able will attend the event.

Caron Bowman of Street Art Revolution, the source of many outdoor murals in downtown West Palm Beach, will offer a presentation about recognizing the contributions of our African American citizens. The Soul Movement Dance Ensemble, Soul Stage creative dance troupe will add to the festivities.

This three-act historical drama relates the story of empire builder Henry Flagler through the eyes of his three captivating wives. Each beautifully gowned lady will tell of her years with the man who created a rich man’s paradise on the blank canvas of Florida.

Meet devoted but difficult Mary Harkness, mother of Flagler’s children; frivolous and high-strung Ida Alice Shourds, who spiraled into insanity; and heiress Mary Lily Kenan, who captivated 71-year-old Henry when she was just 34.

Dianne Jacoby wrote and stars in the drama, portraying all of the wives. Jacoby is a fourth-generation Floridian and previously lived in Palm Beach County. Now a longtime resident of St. Augustine, Jacoby has a love of “Ancient City” history that led her to delve deeply into Flagler’s heritage, crafting a diverse portfolio of performances at venues in St. Augustine and beyond.

In 1981, Congress passed a proclamation designating Women’s History Week. Since 1995, US presidents have issued a series of proclamations designating March as Women’s History Month.

The HSPBC recognizes that each of the many cultural groups in our population has its own history as well as a shared history. Through our Women’s History Initiative, we facilitate a growing group of both women and men that support activities to recognize and empower the strength of women in our community, past and present.

All Aboard! The Transforming Effects of the Celestial Railroad (NEW): Learn how, in the 1880s, the tiny Jupiter and Lake Worth Railway caused a boom in the number of residents, tourists, and even snowbirds on Lake Worth.

West Palm Beach’s Murdering Postmistress (NEW): Lena Clarke was a writer, poet, composer, postmistress – and murderer. This sordid tale during the 1920s West Palm Beach boom made national headlines. Presented by Ginger Pedersen, author of Crime, Love, and Murder: Lena Clarke, The Postmistress Killer, which will be available for purchase and personal inscription.

Henry Morrison Flagler: How One Man Modernized Florida’s East Coast (NEW): Dive into the life and accomplishments of Henry Flagler, founder of the Florida East Coast Railway and a key figure in the development of Florida’s Atlantic coast from 1840 to today.

Historical Figures (NEW): Meet four diverse pioneers who impacted early life in Palm Beach County: the Barefoot Mailman in the unique 1885 mail system; Millie Gildersleeve, a freed slave, vegetable farmer, and midwife; Alligator Joe, owner of Palm Beach tourist attractions; and Lillie Pierce Voss, the first non-Native American born between Jupiter and Miami.

The Gilded Age in Palm Beach: Nationwide, the Gilded Age lasted from about 1877 to 1890. It was a period of massive immigration, extreme industrial growth that created great wealth, and lavish displays of that wealth. The effects did not reach Palm Beach until 1894, when Henry Flagler brought in the Gilded Age on his Florida East Coast Railway.

The Big Five (NEW): Learn about the architects that helped shape the look of Palm Beach: Addison Mizner, Marion Sims Wyeth, Maurice Fatio, John Volk, and Howard Major. Discover their influences, who lived in the homes they designed, which of their creations were subject to the wrecking ball, and which were conserved through innovative thinking.

Paradise in Peril: World War II in Palm Beach County: This lecture examines the military presence in Palm Beach County during World War II and civilian activities towards the war effort. Topics include the county’s contributions, including two army air bases, a secret listen station, civilian organizations, U-boat hunters, the Coast Guard, military hospitals, and a POW camp.

Ancient People of South Florida: Many people are surprised to learn that Palm Beach County’s rich history stretches back 12,000 years. Meet Palm Beach County’s earliest Native Americans through historic sites and markers from Jupiter to Boca Raton and West Palm Beach to the Glades.

Becoming West Palm Beach: This lecture summarizes the Johnson History Museum’s former exhibit by the same name on the city’s 125th anniversary. Explore with us how West Palm Beach expanded with the diversity of its people, businesses, and amusements.

Coconuts, Beaches, Mosquitoes, and Panthers: The Pioneer Era: Today Palm Beach County is a modern paradise and easily reached. Journey back to the late 1800s and hear about the difficulties of getting here, the settlers’ homes, food, hotels, life-saving stations, and challenges of life in what they saw as a “Garden of Eden.”

Shipwrecks, Treasures and More (NEW): Explore famous shipwrecks along Palm Beach Coast and find out why there were so many shipwrecks throughout the ages.

EDUCATION

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County agrees with scholars that learning history has extensive benefits, especially for children. Since 2003, the HSPBC has dedicated resources to teaching history and civics to local children, in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County. The resulting curriculum satisfies Florida State Standards in not only history, but several other subjects. The HSPBC continues to update and provide this knowledge in ways that meet the changing needs of our children. All the resources below are provided free of charge to educators. The information is also available to the public at pbchistory.org.

Traveling Trunks

The Traveling Educational Trunk Program is a lending library of exciting hands-on history lessons for the classroom! Themed Trunks contain activities, reproductions of artifacts, and teaching aids that can be adapted to all grade levels. Topics include the Ancient People of Florida, Spanish Explorers, Seminoles, the Pioneer Era, Civil War in Florida, the Holocaust, the Gilded Age, Agriculture, and Women’s Suffrage.

Traveling Pop-up Exhibits

These cube-shaped exhibits are loaned to schools, libraries, and other non-commercial use, indoors or outdoors. Pickup and delivery are provided. Topics are appropriate for all ages and currently include Florida's Ancient People, Florida Explorers, Seminoles, the Pioneer Era, Civil War in Florida, The Storm of ‘28, Shipwreck: Discovering Lost Treasure, and Breaking Barriers: Portraits of Persistence.

History of Florida Tabloid

This publication, updated annually, is a comprehensive learning guide, tracing the rich history of Florida and Palm Beach County. It serves as a tool for educators to enhance teaching and learning.

This valuable resource contains primary and secondary sources on Palm Beach County and Florida history, including architectural drawings and other information related to Palm Beach properties that are safeguarded by the town’s Landmarks Preservation Commission.

As historians, the HSPBC sincerely appreciates the owners of these properties for their commitment to preserving these historic icons. With more and more people seeking refuge in our paradise year-round, it is a critical time to save our past for future generations.

The Historical Society is the steward for some of the most prominent names in Palm Beach architectural history, such as Treanor & Fatio, Gustav A. Maass, William Manley King, Howard Major, Marion Sims Wyeth, and, of course, Addison Mizner. Owners of a landmarked property can learn more about its unique story through the HSPBC Landmarked Home Legacy Program. ARCHIVAL COLLECTION

Since 1937, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County has been the principal repository for the historical materials and artifacts that document the area’s history. Our collection has become a respected destination, a treasure trove for residents as well as worldwide researchers, ever since The Right Reverend Nathaniel Seymour Thomas’ extensive Floridiana and rare book collections became the cornerstone for the nascent Society’s holdings.

The HSPBC’s vast resources have recorded civic milestones and cultural events. The Photograph Collection includes four million images. The Apparel Collection contains pieces, images, and sketches from many notable designers. The Objects number more than five thousand items representing Palm Beach County material culture of the 19th to 21st centuries. The Library Collection includes over 4,600 book titles. Archival research files contain architectural drawings, diaries, manuscripts, correspondence, family scrapbooks, oral histories, and other documentation of Palm Beach County’s unique past.

Over the years, the Society has transformed these collections into multi-dimensional interactive exhibitions for the Richard and Pat Johnson Palm Beach County History Museum and for pop-up exhibits that travel throughout the county. They are a source for the history and civics programming that we provide free of charge (SEE Education, page 45). The Historical Society has published many books encompassing the people, places, and events of diverse local history from the Everglades to Palm Beach.

To make the past a viable part of the present, the Historical Society has embarked on publishing one of several memoirs housed in our archive, scheduled to land in bookstores in February 2024. Presented by Florida’s distinguished Pineapple Press, Addison Mizner: A Palm Beach Memoir recounts the architect’s life and adventures at Palm Beach with unrestrained boldness from 1918 until 1924. Regarded as part two of his autobiography, this volume was intended as a follow-up to The Many Mizners (Sears Publishing Company, 1932), which related his early years from California to New York. Unfortunately, Mizner died before relating the Boca Raton odyssey that led to his financial downfall. Nonetheless, what he has shared clearly confirms Mizner’s standing as a Palm Beach original.

Historian and author Augustus Mayhew III edited Mizner’s original manuscript, complemented with patron Alice Delamar’s recollections as the book’s Introduction to 1920s Palm Beach. This detailed volume, enhanced with more than 100 photographs, provides background on the participants in Mizner’s life and the making of Mizner Industries, the county’s largest business at the time. Each year we encourage, welcome, and attract NEW volunteers with diverse educational and professional backgrounds, languages, and skills. We offer opportunities to fit nearly any circumstance.

Without our volunteers, the HSPBC could not effectively further its mission. Volunteers receive an Individual membership, celebrate their achievements at an Annual Volunteer Salute and Appreciation Luncheon, and are invited to the Annual Volunteer Field Trip. We encourage a spirit of friendship and community while having FUN learning and sharing local history.

ARCHIVAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Historical Society of Palm Beach County provides future archivists and museum professionals with the opportunity to gain firsthand experience working with collections and exhibitions. The Society is looking for graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in degree-seeking programs in Public History, Library and Information Science, Museum Studies, Anthropology, or Historic Preservation to participate in our internship program.

Since 1937, the HSPBC has been collecting, preserving, and sharing the rich history of Palm Beach County and the larger context of Florida’s heritage dating back at least 12,000 years. The Society has extensive archives and artifact collections. With over one million photographs, hundreds of postcards, architectural drawings, manuscripts, diaries, and maps available for study, the Society is a valuable source of primary and secondary sources for anyone interested in Palm Beach County history.

Interns will assist in archival and collection management, as well as exhibition research and planning. Experience with Microsoft Word and image/photo editing in Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.

Internships are open for all semesters until full.

In 2022, the Historical Society of Palm Beach County began a collaboration between our Research Department and Kilo Content to produce a video series, Behind the Palms, hosted by Kilo owner Kent Anderson.
