Greetings Link Sisters, On behalf of the over 16,000 members of The Links, Incorporated, I am elated to congratulate the members of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter on your virtual 15th Book & Author Luncheon! As we enjoy this morning of fellowship and fun, we celebrate the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter for carrying on the tradition, and commitment of its membership and resources to serving and investing in its communities with transformational programs. Your Book & Author Luncheon serves as a vehicle to celebrate the impactful contributions of community leaders, such as Ambassador Andrew Young, Judy Smith, Terry McMillan, Natalie Baszile, E. Lynn Harris, Bebe Moore Campbell, Edwidge Danticat and Karine Jean-Pierre. The Luncheon also serves to raise funds for chapter programs and has awarded at least $15,000 in scholarships annually to high-achieving students in your community. Your transformational programs and academic scholarships are two examples of your work and investment in the future of young leaders on behalf of our Services to Youth Facet, which are integral in a comprehensive approach to providing service in our communities. Since 1955, the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter has proudly served the Greater Miami community, making connections with its residents and like-minded organizations. It is through the great work of this chapter that we continue to sustain the rich legacy of our co-founders to be Linked in Friendship and Connected in Service. I know the friends and supporters of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter join me in applauding President Gail Ash Dotson, the Book & Author Luncheon Event Chair Jessica Garrett Modkins, the planning committee on this wonderful event and your entire chapter membership on your outstanding endeavors. Thank you for your dedication and thank you for your impact. I am proud of the significant impact this chapter has made in

Transforming Communities ~ Fulfilling Our Purpose. In friendship and service,

Kimberly Jeffries Leonard, Ph.D. National President

Office of the National Vice President

November 14, 2021 Greetings!

Ethel Isaacs Williams, J.D.

To the dynamic members of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, supporters and community partners, it is my honor and privilege to Congratulate you on your 15th Annual Book and Author Brunch. This hallmark event, the 15th Annual Book and Author Brunch, being celebrated virtually this year, is yet another extraordinary testament to your well-placed investments into both our rich legacy as a people, and the promising future of our youth who are preparing today – in order to lead tomorrow. It is particularly noteworthy that this year your commissioned literary work “Linkages and Legacies Volume III (Historical profiles depicting notable Greater Miami, Florida pioneers of African descent)” will, again, celebrate and elevate the significant contributions, large and small, of those on whose shoulders we will forever stand and whose indomitable spirits will live on for generations to come. Since the chartering of your chapter on November 5, 1955 the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter has been a beacon of light for your community and our organization globally. Your stellar reputation of being the home chapter of visionaries such as Maude K. Reid, 5th Southern Area Director, Regina Jollivette Frazier, 9th National President and 9th Southern Area Director and Anne t. Herriott, 19th Southern Area Director and National Chair of Chapter Establishment, as well as U.S. Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, is reflective of each chapter member’s enduring commitment to transformative service. To Chapter President, Gail Ash Dotson, Chapter Officers and Members of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter, I am overjoyed by your consistent dedication to the tenants of our organization for over 65 years. And to the event Chair, Jessica Garrett Modkins, and all of my Link Sisters who worked behind the scenes and on the front line to make today a memorable occasion, a special thank you for a job well-done! Yours in friendship and service,

Link Ethel

Southern Area Director

Saturday, November 14, 2021 Greetings,

Sylvia Perry

Congratulations to the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter for its continued dedication to, and support of, literacy and authors of color through your annual Book and Author Brunch. Though we have adapted to our pandemic environment, Linkages & Legacies is a testimony of your commitment to the Diaspora. For more than two decades, the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter has presented renowned writers such as Terry McMillan, E. Lynn Harris, Judy Smith, BeBe Moore Campbell and Edwidge Dandicat to the South Florida community. Through your efforts, not only have many of our nation’s talented authors been celebrated, but also the importance of literacy has been stressed. Today, the friends of the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter have the opportunity to witness and celebrate the genius of both commuity leaders and the evangelical trailblazers that have guided the hearts and minds of the communities we serve as we strive for collective change. It’s no surprise that the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter will recognize such entities. As the home chapter of Regina Jollivette Frazier, Ninth National President and Ninth Southern Area Director of The Links, Incorporated, and Anne T. Herriott, 19th Southern Area Director, the chapter is no stranger to excellence. The Greater Miami (FL) Chapter is a standard bearer of community service in South Florida for over 55 years. As a result of the chapter’s dedication to presenting this highly anticipated event, the community continues to benefit from the many signature programs and projects the chapter has supported through the years. Most importantly, an investment in our future, through providing scholarships to our youth, has been made. I applaud the Greater Miami (FL) Chapter and its many friends and supporters attending the brunch today for your continued support of this stellar event. The luncheon and the programs that it supports are a testament to how the Greater Miami Chapter demonstrates Collective Excellence: Elevating Our Friendship, Enriching Our Service.

Gail Ash Dotson

Welcome to Celebrating 66 Years of Friendship & Service and Linkages & Legacies Volume III hosted by Greater Miami (FL) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. We are delighted you have joined us today. This 15th biennial Book & Author Brunch is the signature event of Greater Miami (FL) Chapter. For the past 23 years, we have hosted this event to showcase prominent authors and/or books, which inspire and enlighten us. That tradition continues with this year’s Linkages & Legacies Volume III. Linkages & Legacies Volume III highlights and documents 66 individuals plus 21 historical Churches in the Miami-Dade County community. These 66 pioneers of the African diaspora represent various sectors in our community such as the Arts, Law, Maritime, Medical, Education, Business & Industry, Media, among others. The 21 historic churches are 100 years or older. Linkages & Legacies Volume III will be donated, as was Volumes I and II, to every public school, college and university and museum in Miami-Dade County. Additionally, every HBCU and African American museum in the country. This brunch continues as a part of our “Linked in Action” series as well as the celebration of The Links, Incorporated Diamond Jubilee - 75 Years of Shaping Our Future (1946 – 2021). We are honored to have with us today, Yamiche Alcindor, a Miami native and host of Washington Week, White House correspondent for the PBS NewsHour and a political contributor to NBC News and MSNBC. Ms. Alcindor shares with us the importance of documenting our history and telling our story. Similarly, we are excited to have Alex Finnie, Anchor/Reporter, WPLG Local 10 and Heir-o-Link serve as our Mistress of Ceremony. Proceeds from the Book & Author Brunch, which benefits The Links Foundation, Incorporated are used to fund the Chapter’s annual scholarship program, through which we award at least $15,000 annually in scholarships to five high-potential seniors in Miami-Dade County Schools to support their transition to college. By supporting this event, you are helping us invest in the future leaders of our community. For that, we thank you. We hope you enjoy this virtual event and we appreciate you for attending. With gratitude,

REPORTER/ANCHOR, WPLG LOCAL 10 MIAMI

Alex joined the Local 10 News team in May 2018.

South Florida is home! She was raised in Miami and attended the Cushman School and New World School of the Arts for high school. Alex received her Bachelor of Science in television and film production at St. John's University in New York City. Alex has had the opportunity to cover a wide variety of stories so far at Local 10. In addition to the day to day news in the fast pace South Florida market, she has also traveled to cover big stories outside of the viewing area. In October 2018, Alex covered Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle. She was there reporting before, during and after the storm. Local 10 was the first South Florida station to send a crew to cover the catastrophic Category 5 storm that ravaged large portions of the Florida Panhandle. In addition to that, Alex also traveled to Pittsburgh to cover the horrific mass shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in October 2018. Local 10 was the only South Florida station that traveled to Pittsburgh. Alex has worked in newsrooms around the country, from New York City to Alabama. Throughout her career, Alex has had the opportunity to interview a wide variety of notable people, including President Barack Obama, President Donald Trump, the Rev. Al Sharpton and Oprah Winfrey, to name a few. She covered the widely publicized Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley scandal that led to his resignation, as well as the heated Alabama Senate race between Roy Moore and Sen. Doug Jones. She also had the honor of covering the 50-year anniversary of "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Alabama, the event that led to the Voting Rights Act. During her off time, Alex enjoys spending time with family, volunteering in her community and relaxing when she can. She loves being back in South Florida telling the stories that affect the community she's called home since childhood.
