Q&A ASK THE EXPERT
Getting to know YOU! At Steil Dermatology we offer cutting edge cosmetic procedures and treatments, but our first priority is you. We keep that commitment by really getting to know you – not just your skin! Recently Dr. Rachel Bognet of Chicago left an excellent, large dermatology practice to join Steil Dermatology. Why? “Because,” she says, “I saw something happening there that rarely happens anywhere in medicine today: Steil Dermatology really gets to know their patients, even treating multiple generations of the same family!” It’s true: as Dr. Christina Steil puts it, “when we treat several generations of a family we know we are providing the excellent care we promise.” So, what does it look like to be one of these “Steil Dermatology families?” Meet Ann, of Lemont, age 53, who shares her story: Q: Why do three generations in your family see Dr. Steil for their skin health? A: Well, it must have been 15 years ago, I was struggling with adult acne and my general practitioner sent me to Dr. Steil. She did wonders for my skin. Then, she treated my fair-skinned children when they were little, for rashes, and later she treated them for acne, with the then-new Isolaze laser. It totally cleared it up. She taught us all about the importance of sun protection too. Q: So acne and sun protection and rashes. That’s why you are a Steil Dermatology family? A: No, wait, I haven’t gotten to the best parts, also the scary parts. My husband had a scab on top of his head that wouldn’t heal. I (finally!) convinced him to see Dr. Steil. Guess what? It
was melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer. She ended up surgically treating it successfully and that was ten years ago. More recently my dad, who really doesn’t like doctors - he’s 80 - had a problem with itchy flaky moles another dermatologist didn’t take seriously. I finally convinced him, too, to see Dr. Steil. She was sure it was skin cancer, but he didn’t believe it. So she made a bet with him: if he let her biopsy it and it wasn’t skin cancer – she would take him to lunch! Q: So, did your dad and Dr. Steil get some sandwiches together? A: No! She had correctly diagnosed the problem – squamous cell, a fast growing skin cancer - and in this case she sent him to a particular expert she trusted to treat it. Now, he’s fine too. In fact I think he should take her to lunch! Q: Wow, so did your dad and husband ever thank you for convincing them to see Dr. Steil? A: (laughing) Yes! I’m not sure they were happy about admitting I was right to push them to see her, but they sure are happy with the results. Now my husband and dad go to Steil Dermatology for regular skin checks and preventive skin treatments so they don’t have to deal with these cancer scares again. We just wouldn’t go to anywhere else.
