Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family” this quote by Nobel Peace Laureate Kofi Annan is very inspiring and gives a sense of fulfilment for all involved in the field of education. Hindustan Institute of Technology & Science treads with determination and commitment for three decades on the well laid out path by the late Founder Chairman Dr. KCG Verghese. I feel happy to note that HITS has continued to excel in all fields; and during the last academic year 2018-19 it witnessed innumerable accomplishments by the staff and students. Taking into account our commitment and drive towards quality education, NBA has accredited five undergraduate Engineering programmes namely, Aeronautical, Automobile, Computer Science, Civil and Mechanical; and NIRF 2019 has rated HITS in 95th position in India under Engineering Category. In the global arena QS i Gauge rated HITS with an overall Gold, and in QS BRICS Ranking HITS was ranked in 301-350 band among the World Universities. HITS has been bestowed with the Institute of the Year for Higher Education-South, award at the 12th ASSOCHAM Summit and IEN Higher Education Award as the University of the Year during the 7th Higher Education Summit. Students are a great asset of our institution and their success is attributed to their hard work and persistence in achieving their goals. It is heartening to note that HITS students have brought several accolades and many laurels and even gained entry into India Book of Records for their projects Jaihind 1S, Light Weight Satellite and Jhatayu, Asia’s First Flying Bike. It’s a matter of pride that with a view towards globalization HITS has provided the platform for students and staff to participate in semester exchange programmes and pursue research projects with partner institutions overseas. Services to the society have been one of the primary goals of our educational institution. Hindustan has always been in the forefront to reach out to the needy and lend a helping hand in times of crisis that arise due to natural calamities. HITS formed a team of volunteers under banner “Hindustan for Kerala and Tamil Nadu” and emergency supplies in kind, cash and services were rendered to the flood victims of both the states for their rehabilitation. I am proud to note that HITS has proved its worth and mettle in academics, extracurricular activities and philanthropy. The concerted and committed efforts of the entire Hindustan fraternity have enabled this institution to scale greater and newer heights and achieve laurels in all spheres of its activities. I congratulate the editorial team for compiling the HCELLENCE magazine in a meticulous manner.

Amodest beginning of HITS way back in 1985, brings reminiscence of Late Dr. K.C.G. Verghese, a visionary, whose heart wept to introduce technical education to the young aspirants in India. Since then HITS has come a long way in making quality education affordable to all. We trust that to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe. Every year HITS has been outwitting itself in performances which are recognized and honoured with several accolades. To refer a few, QS I-GAUGE Indian University Rating’s “GOLD” acknowledgement under categories such as Accreditation, Facilities, Teaching and Learning, Research, Entrepreneurship, Employability, Faculty, Quality, Student Diversity and Social Responsibility; NBA’s accreditation for technical courses offered by 5 departments, and NIRF rankings’ placement in 95th position in India under Engineering Category, and 30th in India among Private Engineering Institutions. Acknowledgements such as “Institute of the Year for Higher Education – South” at the 12th ASSOCHAM National Education Summit 2019, “Best Education Brands of 2018” award from Economic Times, and “Innovation by Deemed to be University” award at the Elets 13th World Education Summit, 2018 has enhanced our label. Notably, the entry made by students’ projects—Jaihind 1S, successfully tested at NASA and certified by India Book of Records as the World’s Lightest Satellite; and Jhatayu—most touted as Asia’s First Flying Bike duly certified by the India Book of Records. Each accolade and award that came our way has only reiterated our commitment to do better and scale greater heights. dr. k.P. isaaC Vice Chancellor The academic year 2018-19 has brought several awards and accolades. We have improved the rankings in the Engineering category in National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) to 95th position. Five undergraduate programmes viz, Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation under the Tier 1 category. The QS Bricks Rankings, QS I-Gauge Rating, “Institute of the Year for Higher EducationSouth,” “IEN Higher Education,” “Best Education Brands 2018” awards, recording entries into India Book of Records for innovative projects, are a few other notable awards. The contributions of the faculty and students and other staff in bringing these laurels to this institution is remarkable. The improvement in the teaching learning process by implementing several academic reforms, involvement of the faculty and students in carrying out research and dissemination of the same through publication in indexed journals, the involvement of the students in various extracurricular and cocurricular activities in the socially relevant projects, participation of the industry in the academic activities are the real mantras for this great achievement. The University Magazine “HCELLENCE 2019” will give glimpses of our achievements and strategic steps to achieve the same. We continue to strive hard to achieve greater heights with several initiatives and academic reforms supported by improvements in infrastructure.

The ultimate goal of education is to carve out independent people who could be the sole architects of their lives; and HITS is proud in achieving this goal reflecting its motto. Being one of the pioneers in higher education field in the country, HITS has the onus of setting up new benchmarks for others to aspire. The year 2018-19 has been incredible. Awards such as “Institute of the Year for Higher Education-South;” “IEN Higher Education Award;” “Outstanding Higher Educational Institution for Skill Development;” NIRF Ranking of 95th in India under Engineering Category and 30th under Private Engineering Institutions; NBA accreditations for technical courses offered by Aeronautical, Automobile, Civil, Computer Science, and Mechanical Engineering departments; QS Brics Ranking in the 301-350 band; QS I-Gauge’s overall GOLD recognition; entry to the India Book of Records through projects: Jaihind 1S, the lightest micro satellite; Jhatayu- Asia’s first flying bike; and the most economical Femto Satellite are some of the remarkable accomplishments the year witnessed. Each and every member of HITS fraternity is a stakeholder in its onward march and deserves a share of its achievements. I feel honour-bound to congratulate Team Hindustan! Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science with over 3 decades of proven excellence in the area of Higher Education is rated as one of the most sought after Institution for Higher Studies in Engineering & Technology, Aviation, Architecture, Liberal Arts and Management studies. When we look back, 2018-19 was very promising - we got NBA Accreditation for all the 5 programmes we applied for, in addition to NIRF ranking, QS BRICS ranking, QS I-GAUGE and QS Star ratings, 5S Certification apart from several awards and recognitions bestowed on us. We have also registered exponential increase in terms of number of Publications and Research Projects. We have proven our capabilities in all fronts like Academics, Cultural, Sports and Social outreach. Timely help to needy during Kerala floods, Gaja cyclone etc. showcased our commitment and concern to the society.

My best wishes to our students who have entered in ‘India Book of Records’ for their innovative projects: world’s lightest Satellite – Jaihind IS and Jhatayu - Asia’s first Flying Bike. I extent my hearty congratulations to all faculty and students for their untiring efforts and commitment which helped the Institution to reach its present enviable status as one of the Premier Teaching – Research Institution in the Country.

Contemplating on the last academic year makes me realize that HITS has had an absolute exciting and enlightening experience in 2018-19. The efforts taken by all departments in reaching excellence in education is laudable. The strenuous and dedicated works of Team HITS has resulted in attaining NBA Accreditation for 5 undergraduate programmes namely, Aeronautical Engineering, Automobile Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The NIRF ranking attained by HITS in 95th position in India under Engineering Category; 4th in Chennai, 11th in Tamil Nadu, 18th in South India, and 30th in India among Private Engineering Institutions has given great vibes for us to stay more focused and work with unified goal. The academic year 2018-19 has also seen appreciations through “Best Education Brands of 2018,” “Innovation by Deemed to be University,” and “Outstanding Higher Educational Institution for Skill Development” awards. I congratulate students for coming up with innovative projects Jaihind 1S and Jhatayu and getting placed in India Book of Records.
