Inscribed and signed by Gershwin in pencil on the frontispiece, “Be careful of my brother, sincerely, George Gershwin.” Additionally inscribed by Gershwin five times on the following pages: 1) p.28 (Do It Again) “Not again, just me please/George”; 2) p.41 (Oh, Lady Be Good) “Too Good? Just a [illeg.] cut”; 3) p.47 (Somebody Loves Me) “I hope it’s art”; 4) p.65 (The Man I Love) “Why not Art?” [?]; 5) p.121 (Who Cares?) “Like! Some Songs!”
A wonderful association copy inscribed and annotated by one of America’s most prolific and renowned composers. Many of the inscriptions appear on pieces of music with lyrics written by Gershwin’s brother, Ira, and relate to the title of the piece.
Wear to boards; boards reinforced at spine with clear tape; evidence of sticker removal from upper board; spine deteriorated with 4-inches of loss at bottom; light finger smudges to title page and some leaves throughout; hinges starting; edges of leaves toned. $3,000-5,000
