Pauline Trigère, acclaimed for the authority of her construction, the architectural quality of her styling, the beauty of her fabrics, defined American fashion for more than fifty years. Innumerable awards from her colleagues acknowledge her as a fashion force. She is one of 28 designers immortalized with a bronze plaque embedded on Seventh Avenue. Her creations continue walking the red carpet with lively fashion-wise notables like Sara Jessica Parker. As the iconic American designer with the Gallic sensibility, in her time she dressed the Duchess of Windsor, Claudette Colbert, Lena Horne, Phyllis McGuire (and the McGuire sisters) Bette Davis, Josephine Baker, Patricia Neal and me, her daughter-in-law.
This is my collection. Some were samples, many one-of-a kind. Some are inherited from Pauline’s own closet. Each prized because they were definitively “Trigère”.
That style always began with a dialogue between Pauline and fabric. She loved the tactile sensibility and surprise of combining contrasting colors and textures. She boldly incorporated cotton into evening gowns and paired startling combinations like subtle mohair with gilded silk.
Like Vionnet, Pauline draped. She too preferred the bias cut as her favorite mode of expression because it flattered and concealed. And like Schiaparelli, Pauline comprehended the power, authority, drama and often the sly humor of the perfect outfit. She designed for the grand entrance, the show-stopping moment. Whether it was a minimalist suit, tailored to perfection, or a stunningly simple silk dress, in Trigère you strided confidently into a room or commanded a podium assured of being captivating. Her evening outfits in remarkable diaphanous luxurious fabrics bespoke a world where every woman was glamorous and desirable. To Pauline the woman wore the clothes. The clothes never wore the woman,
What I remember as uniquely defining Pauline though is not any of these stunning outfits. It is in a moment occurring during an opening night gala. Suddenly, turning on the woman behind her, Pauline demanded in that unforgettable throaty French accent, “What have you done with the belt? That is my dress. I am the designer. And that is not how to wear it.” It was the reaction of an artist. A dress might define the wearer but it acknowledged her artistry. It was no accident that her works were signed; her label, her signature. Like all enduring artists, the proof of her genius is her lasting influence, the recognized timelessness and the desire for her creations.
