Sally Leezenbaum discovered the allure of Chanel in the early 1960s during a family holiday in Paris. On the right bank of the French capital, Mrs. Leezenbaum found herself at the door of 31 rue Cambon and, while ordinarily not easily intimidated, felt nervous to enter the hallowed halls of Maison Chanel. With coaxing from her husband, Mrs. Leezenbaum went in to see what she might find. It was that day that she met Rolande, the première vendeuse who would become Mrs. Leezenbaum’s personal shopper and close friend.
On this first visit to the atelier, Mrs. Leezenbaum arrived too late in the season to purchase from the current collection. However, Rolande showed her a lovely green tweed ensemble that had been a model’s sample (lot 195). Through fittings and alterations a longstanding relationship commenced.
In the years that followed, Mrs. Leezenbaum, accompanied by her two daughters, met with Rolande each fall and spring to select the designs that would be made just for her.
