The Belleek Pottery Limited. Belleek, County Fermanagh, Ireland
the belleek pottery works company
After John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited the village of Belleek and Castlecaldwell estate in 1849, he sought to provide employment for those affected by the Irish potato famine and ordered a geologic survey of the land, which was found to be rich in fine kaolin and feldspar. Bloomfield founded the Belleek Pottery Works Company in 1884 under a partnership with a London architect and a Dublin merchant. He also lobbied for the establishment of a railway to Belleek, so that coal could be brought to fire the kilns that produced Belleek pottery.
Belleek’s early wares focused on utilitarian domestic products, but eventually the company perfected the production of parian and became known for high-quality compotes, centerpieces and tea wares decorated with classical and sea motifs. By 1865 Belleek had established markets in Ireland, England, Australia and North America, and counted Queen Victoria, the Prince of Wales and the English nobility among its enthusiasts.
