Paul Sormani, born in 1817 in Venice, established a workship in 1847 in Paris and quickly earned recognition as a leading ébéniste of the 19th century. Sormani specialized in furniture made in the Louis XV and Louis XVI styles, and exhibited at many Universal Expositions, receiving medals in 1855 and 1862. A catalogue for the 1867 Exhibition described his work by saying “toute sa production révèle une qualité d’exécution de tout premier ordre” (all his production reveals a quality of execution of the highest order). When Sormani died in 1877, his widow and son continued to operate the business until 1934.

This extraordinary cabinet is based on a model by André Charles Boulle, the original of which was ordered by Louis XIV in 1700, and features a decorative marquetry in which brass, pewter and bronze are cut and pierced into elaborate floral designs on a tortoise shell and ebony veneer. Originally a 10th-century Italian process, this technique was perfected by Boulle in the 17th century.
