Louise Balaam & Angela Charles Sweeping & Scratched Landscapes This show brings together two landscape painters who share a passion for the expressionistic approach to landscape. Their work is about finding the balance between figuration and abstraction and the feeling of being in the landscape as well as observing it. Angela Charles’ painting comes out of 60’s abstract expressionism where the gestural marks convey the feeling of being in the landscape. Spiky pencil lines are offset against sweeping brush marks creating a tension between the marks which echoes the contrast, for example, between a crashing wave and a seagull gliding on an updraft. Louise Balaam is masterful at conveying the essence of the landscape with big gestural brush marks. Looking at her work, one gets a strong experience of the changing English weather which comes through the energetic physicality of her marks. Vibrant, life enhancing and joyous landscapes from two painters at the top of their game.

Angela Charles’ paintings are inspired by her surroundings, predominantely the land and sea between her home in South Somerset and the Dorset Coast. Working from quick pen sketches bought back to her studio she begins to work on her memory of the place and her feelings whilst there, rather than a direct representation of the landscape.

Working by building up layers of sanded down paint she knows that all the layers will become part of the work whether they are revealed or not. Her paintings are then subjected to her incisive mark making, either by adding to the surface with pencil or taking away with other tools. Angela will often start a painting heavily inspired by a landscape that by the end isn’t visible, due to her becoming so absorbed in the whole painting process. Angela Charles, born 1966, graduated from Goldsmiths College in 1989. Represented by Hilton Fine Art since 2013.
