Heart OF THE LOWCOUNTRY ™ Get a lay of the land — past, present and future. “The charm of Bluffton lies not just in its historic architecture overlooking the May River, or in its Spanish moss-laced live oak and palmetto palm trees lining its streets, but what rests just below the surface. It is a town whose very soul has survived wars, famine, reconstruction, periods of commercial successes and declines, and nature’s wrath. Its diverse stories remain to be discovered by the curious traveler seeking a place that appreciates its past while planning for a greater future.” – GLEN UMBERGER, HISTORIC PRESERVATIONIST

HEART OF THE LOWCOUNTRY • HISTORY

BLUFFTON

By Design Bluffton boasts a rich and storied history. Many of those stories are housed in its historic buildings. BY LINDA LANIER

HUGER-GORDON HOUSE (1795-1820) With its river-facing verandah and sweeping views, this private residence survived the burning of Bluffton and is the oldest still standing in the town.

HEYWARD HOUSE (1841)

Built by enslaved craftsmen for the Cole family, this Lowcountry vernacular style home (later expanded) is now owned by the Historic Bluffton Foundation. Town of Bluffton’s current Official Welcome Center.

FRIPP HOUSE (c. 1835)

With deep porches on two sides, this white wooden home is a noteworthy example of antebellum Lowcountry vernacular architecture. The Fripp family lived here three decades.

THE CARD HOUSE (c. 1825)

Built to catch river breezes and painted white to reflect the sun’s heat, this is one of the few houses to survive the burning of Bluffton during the Civil War. The Card House was known for late-night, high-stakes card games.

JOHN A. SEABROOK HOUSE (c. 1840)

This home’s white weatherboard construction raised on six-foot piers with front porches was popular in Bluffton through the 1840s, before air conditioning.

NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES All of the buildings shown below are in the Bluffton Historic District, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, 1996. In addition, the following two structures received their own individual listings: Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church (listed in 2019), Church of the Cross (listed in 1975). RECONSTRUCTION ERA NATIONAL HISTORIC NETWORK

CAMPBELL CHAPEL A.M.E. CHURCH (1853) Campbell Chapel Church served the Bluffton community throughout the Reconstruction Era and is included in the Reconstruction Era National Network.

THE CHURCH OF THE CROSS (1857) With beautiful views across the May River, this church was constructed in 1857 by an Anglican congregation. It was one of two churches that survived the burning of Bluffton.

PATZ BROTHERS HOUSE (1892)

Constructed by Adam and Moses Patz as two separate residences sharing a common interior wall. It was operated as a boarding house from 1946 to 1973.

GRAVES HOUSE (1908)

Built by George Sewell Guilford, Bluffton’s first mayor following the 1903 incorporation. The house was for his daughter, Cora Jane Guilford Graves. It remained in the Graves family until 2009.

SQUIRE POPE CARRIAGE HOUSE (c. 1850)

The main home was set ablaze during the Civil War. After its restoration, this building — adjacent to the green and spacious Wright Family Park and steps from the May River — will become Bluffton’s Official Welcome Center once renovations are complete.

GARVIN-GARVEY HOUSE (1870s) Built during the Reconstruction Era by Silas Garvey, a former enslaved person, this is believed to be one of the earliest freedmen-owned houses. It was included in the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network in 2023.

ccording to Bridgette Frazier, nothing connects people more than food. The town council member and local visionary is opening her own Gullah restaurant, and she’s inviting everyone to the table. Bridgette Frazier

BY LAURA LEE

“In the Lowcountry, food is the way we connect to our West African ancestors and preserve their vibrant culture here.” Ma Daisy’s Porch is set to open late 2024. Named for Frazier’s grandmother, Ma Daisy, the restaurant will feature authentic dishes that have been passed down orally for centuries. Creative and resourceful, the Gullah people lived off the land, using ingredients such as rice, tomatoes, shrimp and okra. “Okra will be a focal point in many of our dishes,” says Frazier. “The okra crop was brought over by West African agriculturalists who were captured and enslaved in America.” Frazier is not new to the food scene. Her father ran a popular barbecue restaurant in Bluffton, and she owns a successful catering business and food truck, Chef B Eatz. She’s looking forward to expanding her business into a permanent home

alongside the new Gullah Heritage Center and open-air market. “I want to create a destination to bring Gullah stories to life and showcase this vital part of our country’s history,” she says. Protecting the property are bottle trees that, according to local lore, capture evil spirits. Frazier hopes the new complex will spark conversations from locals and visitors as well as perpetuate the Gullah culture. “I’m doing what I was called to do,” she says. “It’s not something that one person owns, but is for the betterment of everybody.” chefbseatz.com

— BRIDGETTE FRAZIER, OWNER OF MA DAISY’S PORCH AND CHEF B EATZ

Nate Pringle, owner of Hidden Treasures of Bluffton

Hidden Treasures LOCAL BROTHERS OFFER AN INSIDER’S TOUR OF BLUFFTON.

GULLAH HERITAGE CENTER Sew a sweetgrass basket, can some okra, make a shrimp net and touch an oyster. These are just a few of the immersive activities visitors can do at the new Gullah Heritage Center opening in 2024. Executive director Giovanni Glover has rich ties to the Gullah culture. A well-known shrimper, her grandfather was regularly featured on Nickelodeon’s Gullah Gullah Island. Glover will bring in local fishermen, artists, quilters, dancers and storytellers for special programs. “Between our center, our open-air market, and Ma Daisy’s Porch, people of all ages can taste, smell, see, feel and hear the culture so they know what it’s like to be Gullah,” says Glover.

Nate Pringle always wanted to showcase Bluffton’s history and share his Gullah heritage. So when he retired, he launched Hidden Treasures of Bluffton and recruited his brothers to help. “Telling these stories is important to my brother, so I sold my business and jumped on board,” says Ray Pringle, who also serves as a tour guide. “Together we make a good team.” Visitors hop on an eight-passenger golf cart and ride through town with Nate or Ray to learn about the area’s diverse history. The brothers cover about 35 stops on four different tours, each around 75 minutes. There’s the historic Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church, built in 1853, that survived

the burning of Bluffton during the Civil War. There’s Bluffton Oyster Company built on shells from centuries worth of shucking operations. “My granddad and his friends were oystermen and used to row out to the beds,” says Ray. “People don’t realize the oysters shells are valuable, and you have to replant them for the oysters to grow back — just like a tomato, but they take longer.” At each stop, photos, documents and official records appear on the golf cart’s iPad screen, giving visitors important visuals and insights into the past. “We’re telling stories our grandparents told us and their parents told them, but we

have the documents to show these things really happened,” he says. “The images bring the stories alive — we’re not just talking, talking, talking. People can see it for themselves.” hiddentreasures bluffton.com

The Gullah Heritage Center, opening in 2024, shares a story that’s not widely seen and heard. It gives a little history about the area and why it’s so significant and full of charm — I deeply feel that people are so drawn to Bluffton because of its Gullah Geechee roots. That history needs to be preserved. — GWEN CHAMBERS, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF BLACQUITY

As a vibrant and growing community, Bluffton welcomes entrepreneurs, an essential part of the business, arts and commercial activity. Since it launched in 2020, Black Equity University, also known as BlacQuity, has helped elevate, empower and promote more than 30 entrepreneurs through its 12-week business course.

Lowcountry golfers in the know are quick to tell you that May River Golf Course — Jack Nicklaus’ challenging layout set in scenic Montage Palmetto Bluff — rivals any course in an area rich with world-class tracks. May River Golf Course might require the most skill of any layout in Bluffton, but it isn’t the only one. Hilton Head National Golf Club and Old South Golf Links are among the most enjoyable offerings in the area, and their playability keeps locals and visitors coming back. Hilton Head National Golf Club opened Gary Player’s original 18-hole track in 1989 and added a nine-hole Bobby Weed design in 1995. After relinquishing a few holes over the years, the course currently has 18 holes, a combination of Player’s original design and Weed’s additions. Old South Golf Links features incredible coastal scenes along McKay’s Creek and the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway.

A JOY TO PLAY “This course was a joy to play” is the common refrain from golfers finishing their round at Hilton Head National Golf Club. This gem has been heralded for more than 30 years as the best consistently conditioned layout in the Lowcountry. Golf Advisor routinely lists it among the Top 15 courses in South Carolina. Hall of Famer Gary Player and course architecture award winner Bobby Weed used their distinctive design philosophies in ways that make every club in your bag important. But, as golfers will tell you, it’s a course that’s challenging yet not punishing. The course boasts immaculately groomed TifEagle Ultra greens that run fast and true. The opening holes by Weed offer several strategic risk-reward challenges. The Signature 6th, a par 4, has bordered its entire fairway by a treacherously close lagoon on the right with dangerous pot bunkers on the left. The back nine is tighter and rewards players with a good short game. Most memorable for many, however, is the abundance of wildlife and pristine natural views. 843.842.5900 • hiltonheadnational.com G hiltonheadnational

Chris Shoemaker, who now owns May River Excursions. He ran the trips for fun when he was 12 with his dad, brother and friends. “I wanted to have a job I enjoyed, and I love showing people the beauty of the river.” Trips with May River Excursions can be leisurely, for sightseeing, learning history and watching sunsets — or they can require some participation. Options include fishing, shrimping and crabbing excursions. “In the summer, families love our crabbing excursion since it’s more interactive, and you get to take home dinner,” says Capt. Meatball Pasta Bowl from Giuseppi’s Pizza & Pasta

Eating with Family As managing partner of Bluffton’s Giuseppi’s Pizza & Pasta, Lori Taylor serves pizza with heart. We caught up with her to find out how Giuseppi’s has grown to be an annual tradition for Lowcountry vacationers. WHAT’S SO GREAT ABOUT GIUSEPPI’S PIZZA? It tastes better! There’s no question we use the finest ingredients, from our grande cheese to nitrate-free pepperoni. For our gluten-free customers, our cauliflower pizza crust is the way to go.

WHY DO SO MANY PEOPLE FEEL PASSIONATELY ABOUT COMING HERE? Over the 20 years we’ve been here, we’ve developed great relationships with our customers. We’ve become the local pizzeria. WHAT’S YOUR MANAGEMENT PHILOSOPHY? I try to run Giuseppi’s like I run my life — not looking out for my own interest, but the interest of others. When we hear of a need in the community, we try to help out.

fter living in Florida for 18 years, Sonja Griffin Evans was called home to Beaufort County. “I thought I was starting over but was really moving to the next phase of my life,” she says. “Home is where my roots are and where my inspiration and rejuvenation come from.” An award-winning Gullah-Geechee artist, Sonja Griffin Evans is known for her depictions of enslaved African laborers on Sea Island plantations. Her paintings are not dismal, but rather colorful and vibrant, showcasing a sense of pride. “When you see them in the field, you’re reminded they were experts in their field,” she says. “This is the way I see my ancestors and my way of honoring them.” While exhibiting her works at The Red Piano Art Gallery in Bluffton as well as throughout the U.S. and France, Evans got the idea for creating a luxury clothing brand, American Gullah. “I wanted to do something that expanded our Gullah culture further and allow more people to support it — something more accessible, affordable and mainstream than my paintings,” she says. To get her business off the ground, she enrolled in the 12-week BlacQuity program, formed by a group of multi-racial businesses and community leaders. “The hardest thing facing minority businesses is access
