Extraordinary care, right here at home

E

xcellent health care is a key factor for people deciding where to visit or retire. Because the Lowcountry is a world-class destination, local hospitals and medical centers have been successful in attracting the best healthcare professionals. It makes extraordinary care possible, right here at home.

The difficult part is finding the perfect doctor, hospital or specialist. Some have websites, some do not. Some have a social media presence; some do not. Some are listed in print directories such as the yellow pages; others are not. The Lowcountry Health Care Directory is your up-to-date, comprehensive guide to health care professionals on Hilton Head Island, in Bluffton and beyond. Inside you will find every health care provider in the region, separated alphabetically by specialty (from acupuncture to walk-in clinics). You will also find expanded listings for featured professionals, health tips and other related content. Pull out this special section and use it for reference the rest of the year. Copies were inserted into May 2016 issues of Hilton Head Monthly, Bluffton Monthly and have been distributed to numerous health care providers. Extra copies can be obtained at 52 New Orleans Road, Suite 300, Hilton Head Island. We hope you find this guide useful and take a moment to look at our websites, hiltonheadmonthly.com and yourlocalhealthchoice.com. NOTE: All information was believed to be accurate as of press time. E-mail corrections to editor@hiltonheadmonthly.com.

ORAL HEALTH A WINDOW TO YOUR OVERALL HEALTH

Did you know that your oral health can offer clues about your overall health — or that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body? Understand the intimate connection between oral health and overall health and what you can do to protect yourself. Like many areas of the body, your mouth is teeming with bacteria — most of them harmless. Normally the body’s natural defenses and good oral health care, such as daily brushing and flossing, can keep these bacteria under control. However, without proper oral hygiene, bacteria can reach levels that might lead to oral infections, such as tooth decay and gum disease. In addition, certain medications — such as decongestants, antihistamines, painkillers and diuretics — can reduce saliva flow. Saliva washes away food and neutralizes acids produced by bacteria in the mouth, helping to protect you from microbial invasion or overgrowth that might lead to disease. Studies also suggest that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with periodontitis — a severe form of gum disease — might play a role in some diseases. In addition, certain diseases, such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS, can lower the body’s resistance to infection, making oral health problems more severe. yourlocalhealthchoice.com

1. Not flossing. Brushing your teeth twice a day is important, but many patients don’t realize that flossing at least once a day is just as critical to achieving — and maintaining — a healthy smile. Flossing removes the cavity-causing bacteria left behind from food particles that get stuck between teeth.

DR. JOSEPH HICKEY

2. Brushing too soon after eating. Consuming acidic foods and beverages, such as sports and energy drinks, citrus fruits, wine, and tomatoes, can erode tooth enamel — the glossy outer layer of the tooth. Brushing your teeth too soon after eating and drinking these items can cause more damage because you are essentially brushing the acid into the teeth, not getting rid of it. Instead, you should rinse your mouth with water after consuming acidic foods and beverages and wait at least 30 minutes before brushing your pearly whites!

3. Excessively bleaching your teeth. Overzealous bleaching can cause your teeth to look unnaturally white and increase tooth sensitivity. Before using an at-home bleaching product, talk to your dentist. 4. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush. A hard-bristled toothbrush coupled with an aggressive brushing technique can cause irreversible damage to your gums. Use a soft toothbrush and gently brush your teeth at a 45-degree angle, in a circular motion. Using a back-andforth, sawing motion causes the gums to recede, and can expose the root of the tooth, making teeth extremely sensitive.

SIMPLE CHANGES FOR LIFELONG HEALTH The journey to lifelong health starts with but one small step – and then one leads to another. A positive change here, an unhealthy habit dropped there, and before you know it, you’re travelling down a healthier path. That’s how it should be. Radical overhaul is overwhelming, but small, simple changes are ohso-doable. These are a few of our favorite ways to ease into health. Start with one. When you see what a big impact a humble change can make, you might be ready to tackle the whole list. After all, it’s the little things, right? Add nutrient-rich foods: Before you think about what to take away from your diet, first consider what to add: minimally processed greens and colorful veggies to every meal – and eat those first. As your body fills up on these nutrient-rich foods, you’ll have less room for the other stuff. Limit processed and refined foods: Does it come in a package? Then chances are, that food has been refined and processed, which, unfortunately results in nutrient loss. Concentrate on whole foods in their natural forms, such as fruits and vegetables. If it looks like it did when it grew from the earth, that’s your cue that it’s a healthier choice. Replace white flour: Begin to switch out white flour (and foods made with it) for whole grains. Instead of reaching for regular pasta, try a whole-wheat variety instead (look for “100 per-

cent whole,” “whole durum wheat” or “whole semolina” on the package). Baking? Use whole wheat, spelt or buckwheat flour – and throw in a handful of millet for added texture. Whole flours are higher in good-for-you fiber, minerals (like magnesium) and B vitamins than their refined cousins. Can’t eat wheat? No worries: There are plenty of wheat-free options, from brown-rice or quinoa pasta to oat, teff or chickpea flours. Explore new grains: Don’t stop with the flour and pasta. Stage a white out for other grains, too. (So long, white rice!) Replace with one of the myriad whole grains, which also happen to be healthier. Check out our bulk bins and experiment with a new whole grain each week. There’s so much variety, from amaranth to wild rice. Use less oil: Believe it or not, you don’t need added oils to make the foods you love. You can

steam-sauté those greens and replace the oil in those muffins with applesauce. Then get the healthy fats you need from the most nutritious sources: avocados, nuts and seeds. Go meatless as much as possible: Whether you already follow a vegetarian or vegan diet or are simply looking for ways to eat better, studies show that well balanced plant-based diets are among the healthiest ways to eat. Cutting meat from your diet even one day a week has significant benefits for both you and the planet. Phase out refined and added sugars: Studies show that Americans eat far more sugar than they need – over 22 teaspoons per day, or about 130 pounds a year! Many foods, such as grains, fruit, and milk, have naturally occurring sugars, so start to strike those foods that have sugar added, especially if they’re highly refined, like white sugar and high-fructose corn syrup. If you need to sweeten, opt for less refined sources of sweet, such as raw honey or date paste. Seek support: Sustaining change is always easier – and so much more fun – when you have friends along for the journey. They keep you accountable, encourage you through the hard times and cheer you on from the front lines.

SWEET TEA

CAN CONTRIBUTE TO KIDNEY STONES On a hot summer day, a glass of sweet tea is a satisfying thirst quencher. But before pouring yourself a tall glass, here’s a thought to let steep: Too much sweet tea can cause dehydration and contribute to the formation of kidney stones. Kidney stones have a strong connection to your hydration status. Sweet tea is definitely a high oxalatecontent drink. Oxalate is a natural chemical commonly found in various teas and other foods such as spinach, okra, peanuts and rhubarb. The body can typically flush it out. But when consumed in excess, oxalate builds up in the urinary tract, forming hard, crystallized masses that are painful when they pass. Basically, it’s a buildup of minerals in your urine. Most people can pass that mineral buildup. In places like Hilton Head Island and elsewhere in the South, where sweet tea is a part of everyday life, oxalate buildup can quickly become a problem. Sweet tea alone may not lead to kidney stones, he said, but when coupled with other factors, such as diet and health, drinking too much sweet tea could make people more susceptible to developing them. Doctors recommend patients cut back to one glass of sweet tea a day.

According to the National Kidney Foundation, more than half a million people per year are treated for kidney stones in the emergency room. The foundation also estimates that one in 10 people will be affected during their lifetime. Areas in the Southeast and Southwest United States comprise what urologists refer to as the “kidney stone belt,” partially because people tend to get more dehydrated in warmer climates. Local urologists have reported an increase in kidney stones as the weather turns warmer. Summer is a more common time for kidney stones. A major problem is people tend to drink less water than they think they do. Drinking lots of fluids such as sweet tea or other caffeinated beverages may seem like a flavorful and healthier way to stay hydrated, but they have the reverse effect. Caffeine has a natural diuretic effect, so it takes more fluids out of your body so you get dehydrated. The main thing you should do is drink as much water as you can. To prevent kidney stones, doctors suggest drinking 2.5 to 3 liters of water per day alongside a healthy lifestyle. The best prevention is: One, good hydration; two, maintain a normal body weight; and, three, avoid excess salt intake.

HEAT EXHAUSTION & HEAT STROKE

Walking along the shore, wind in your hair and sun up above. Not a care in the world. Enjoy a little bit of heaven but remember: hours in the sun can lead to a dangerous condition called heat exhaustion. Muscle cramps, nausea, dehydration and headache are all signs that you should take cover and rehydrate. Use ice or a wet towel to cool off. Take a cool bath or shower. Children younger than four, adults older than 65 and people with a serious health condition are most vulnerable.

Runners overall had 30% and 45% lower adjusted risks of all-cause and cardiovascular disease mortality, respectively, over that period and had three years longer life expectancy compared with non-runners, Duckchul Lee, PhD of Iowa State University found. WAYS TO MAINTAIN YOUR BRAIN

Many people want to build up some “insurance” against dementia and other memory problems. But there’s no need to invest in pricey brain-training programs. Instead, do-it-yourself lifestyle changes have been shown to help ward off memory loss and dementia, reports the February 2015 Harvard Women’s Health Watch. The following strategies lead the list: Exercise. “The best evidence so far is for aerobic exercise and physical fitness,” says Dr. Bradford Dickerson, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School. Scores of studies and clinical trials have linked regular aerobic exercise to a reduced risk of dementia. A few brain imaging studies have even shown that aerobic exercise increases brain mass and improves reasoning ability. The best exercise “dose” is 30 minutes or more per day, five times a week. Eat well. The Mediterranean diet — high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains; moderate in olive oil, unsaturated fats, lean protein (poultry, fish, beans, and nuts), cheese, yogurt, and wine; and low in red meat — has been a mainstay of cardiac prevention for almost 20 years. It has also been linked to a reduced risk of dementia. The closer people follow this type of heart-healthy diet, the lower the risk. Stay connected. Being part of a social network also appears to reduce the risk of dementia. The variety in a person’s social network and the satisfaction he or she gets from social contacts is more important than the size of the network.

TIPS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR EYES As the U.S. population ages, the number of Americans with major eye diseases is increasing, and vision loss is becoming a major public health problem, according to the National Eye Institute. By the year 2020, the number of people who are blind or have low vision is projected to increase substantially, according to the Archives of Ophthalmology. Blindness or low vision affects 3.3 million Americans age 40 and over, or one in 28, according to study authors. This figure is projected to reach 5.5 million by the year 2020. So what can you do to keep your eyes healthy?

HERE ARE FIVE TIPS: 1. Point the air conditioner away from your eyes when driving. If you have air going into your eyes for long periods of time, it can lead to corneal abrasions and dry eye syndrome.

2. Some foods are great for your eyes. For instance, fish contains omega-3 fatty acids (great for preventing dry eye syndrome). Sweet potatoes contain lots of vitamin A (helps improve your night vision). Spinach contains lutein (which prevents age-related macular degeneration or ARMD, and cataracts). And blueberries have the most antioxidants of any fruit. Having a cup of yogurt with extra blueberries on top each morning will help you prevent ARMD. 3. Instead of cooking with yellow onions, try cooking with red ones. Red onions contain large doses of quercetin, an antioxidant that helps fight cataracts. 4. Take a daily multivitamin supplement. Studies have shown that women who take vitamin C supplements for 10 years or more are 77 percent less likely to contract cataracts. 5. Don’t smoke. It’s a major cause of cataracts, dry eye syndrome and glaucoma.

KEYS TO A HEALTHY HEART

A few good choices can help you feel better and stay healthier. Getting diagnosed with health problems such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol is a wake-up call that it’s time to make major lifestyle changes. The good news is, a few simple changes can help you avoid such a diagnosis in the first place. 1. Lose Weight/Maintain Healthy Weight 2. Eat Better 3. Get Active 4. Manage Blood Pressure 5. Reduce Blood Sugar 6. Stop Smoking 7. Control Cholesterol

LOOKING TO LOSE? PICK UP THE WEIGHT One of the most important components of any exercise or weight-loss program is resistance training. Resistance/strength training involves performing specific exercises, using either machines or free weights, to help improve muscle strength and endurance. Most weight loss seekers tend to ignore strength training and devote the majority of their training to cardiovascular exercise. While all modalities of cardiovascular exercise are great for improving heart health and require energy use, cardio does not target muscle fitness or overall tone. Resistance training helps to increase muscle mass, which in turn increases the amount of calories your body needs to sustain everyday life.

EXTREME OBESITY RISING AT AN ALARMING RATE

Over the past decade, we’ve had a mind-boggling increase in what is fast emerging as the most serious and costly health problem in the U.S.: morbid obesity. About 35 percent or 72 million American adults are obese, and of that number, 7 million adults are morbidly obese, a health condition which substantially raises the risk of mortality (death) and morbidity (chronic disease). The rate of obesity has increased by almost 25 percent but the rate of morbid obesity has grown even faster: people with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40 increased by 50 percent. Perhaps most alarmingly, people with a BMI over 50—extreme obesity—grew by 75 percent, three times faster than the rate of obesity. Our children are not immune from the epidemic; we’ve seen a 300 percent increase in overweight children. Obesityconditions are the fastest growing cause of death, and the second leading cause of preventable death in the U.S. Over 75 percent of the planet doesn’t have high rates of obesity or vascular disease because their traditional plant-based diet doesn’t put them at risk. Our market-driven economy, advancing technology, processed food diet and ancient genes have collided in such a way as to create a lethal environment for our health. Western nations have replaced age old malnutrition and infectious disease with the epidemic of obesity. We are in the middle of a health crisis that may have profound health effects for decades to come. Unlike a viral epidemic with natural enemies, the obesity epidemic has powerful allies in the industrial food chain to keep it going all the way to the graveyard. People who are obese have a 50 to 100 percent increased risk of premature death from all causes, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Sadly, our children will suffer the most. Obesity, even in children, is an independent risk factor for vascular disease. Today adolescents and teens, in particular, are eating large amounts of highcaloric, artery-clogging fast food. Restaurant food makes up 50 percent of the meals families eat in a year. The saturated fat in these rich foods doesn’t satiate us as quickly as fiber-rich whole foods, which means we may end up eating larger portions to feel full. Consuming too many calories puts the body into a state of oxidative stress—the body cannot use all the extra fuel. And because the liver cannot break down the extra load, blood sugars, blood fats and blood pressure all increase, adding fuel to the fire of vascular inflammation.

LOWCOUNTRY HEALTH CARE DIRECTORY 2016

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT DIGESTIVE DISEASES

When you eat, your body breaks food down to a form it can use to build and nourish cells and provide energy. This process is called digestion. Your digestive system is a series of hollow organs joined in a long, twisting tube. It runs from your mouth to your anus and includes your esophagus, stomach, and small and large intestines. Your liver, gallbladder and pancreas are also involved. They produce juices to help digestion. 1. Spicy foods cause ulcers. The truth is, almost all stomach ulcers are caused either by infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or by use of pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen, the so-called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Most H. pylori-related ulcers can be cured with antibiotics. NSAIDinduced ulcers can be cured with time, stomachprotective medications, antacids and avoidance of NSAIDs. Spicy food and stress may aggravate ulcer symptoms in some people, but they do not cause ulcers. 2. Bowel regularity means a bowel movement every day. The frequency of bowel movements

among normal, healthy people varies from three a day to three a week, and some perfectly healthy people fall outside both ends of this range. 3. Irritable bowel syndrome is a not a disease. Irritable bowel syndrome is a disease, although it is also called a functional disorder. Irritable bowel syndrome involves a problem in how the muscles in the intestines work and pain perception in the bowel. It is characterized by gas, abdominal pain, and diarrhea or constipation, or both. Although the syndrome can cause considerable pain and discomfort, it does not damage the digestive tract as organic diseases do. Also, irritable bowel syndrome does not lead to more serious digestive diseases later, such as cancer. 4. Cirrhosis sole cause is alcoholism. Alcoholism is just one of many causes of cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is scarring and decreased function of the liver. In the United States, alcohol causes less than half of cirrhosis cases. The remaining cases are from diseases that cause liver damage. For example, in children, cirrhosis may result from cystic fibrosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, biliary atresia, glycogen

storage disease, and other rare diseases. In adults, cirrhosis may be caused by hepatitis B or C, primary biliary cirrhosis, diseases of abnormal storage of metals like iron or copper in the body, severe reactions to prescription drugs, or injury to the ducts that drain bile from the liver. In adults, cirrhosis can also be caused by nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which is becoming the most common liver disease in the United States, affecting 2 to 5 percent of Americans 5. Diverticulosis is a serious but uncommon problem. Actually, the majority of Americans over age 60 have diverticulosis, but only a small percentage have symptoms or complications. Diverticulosis is a condition in which little sacs or out-pouchings called diverticula develop in the wall of the colon. These sacs tend to appear and increase in number with age. Most people have no symptoms and learn that they have diverticula after an X-ray or intestinal examination. Less than 10 percent of people with diverticulosis ever develop complications such as infection (diverticulitis), bleeding, or perforation of the colon.

TASTY FOODS YOU SHOULD BE EATING

Iced coffee. An iced pick-me-up is a great way to start your summer mornings. Better yet: drinking a single cup of coffee daily may lower your risk of developing skin cancer. In one study of more than 93,000 women, published in the European Journal of Cancer Prevention, those who drank one cup of caffeinated coffee a day reduced their risk of developing nonmelanoma skin cancer by about 10 percent.

Raspberries: Raspberries are a great source of fiber--some of it soluble in the form of pectin, which helps lower cholesterol. One cup of raspberries has 8 grams of fiber--and a study in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that eating more fiber may help prevent weight gain or even promote weight loss. Tart cherries: They deliver a host of health benefits. You may have heard that drinking tart cherry juice can help you get a better night’s sleep and quell postworkout pain. But did you know that compounds in tart cherries may also help you slim down and get leaner?

Tomatoes: There’s no question that sunscreen should be your first line of defense against the blazing summer sun. But eating tomatoes could give you a little extra protection: consuming more lycopene-the carotenoid that makes tomatoes red--may protect your skin from sunburn.

Chaired committee that developed current, national MRI accreditation standards.

Watermelon: Staying hydrated keeps your memory sharp and your mood stable. It also helps keep your body cool (by sweating) during hot summer months. The good news is that you don’t just have to drink water. You can eat it, too: in addition to delivering skin-protecting lycopene, watermelon is 92 percent water (hence the name). Another boon? Research shows that eating foods that are full of water helps keep you satisfied on fewer calories. (Interestingly enough, drinking water alongside foods doesn’t have the same effect.)

WHAT TO AVOID FOR YOUR SKIN’S SAKE

Eating healthy and being sure to not overdo sun exposure will help protect your skin immensely, but they’re only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to a healthy, skin-boosting lifestyle. Just as it’s important to eat plenty of antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies, it’s important to avoid exposing your skin to lifestyle habits that can cause damage. Among the top items to avoid for your skin’s sake are:

SMOKING Smoking damages collagen and elastin while decreasing blood flow to your skin. This makes it difficult for your skin cells to receive enough oxygen and nutrients to stay healthy. The physical act of smoking can also contribute to expression lines around your lips and eyes (from pursing your lips and squinting).

DRINKING ALCOHOL While an occasional glass of wine is not likely to cause your skin much harm, too much alcohol can damage blood vessels over time, leading to permanently flushed skin or visible blood vessels on your skin’s surface.

SUGAR Eating too much sugar or refined carbs leads to the production of advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. These molecules damage collagen and elastin, and in so doing contribute to wrinkles and sagging skin. STRESS Emotional stress can take a major toll on the appearance of your skin. Not only does stress lessen your skin’s ability to function properly, putting it at risk of skin diseases and increasing the length of time wounds take to heal,10 but stress also speeds up the rate of cellular aging, which can make you look older, faster.

DO YOU HAVE EYE

TWITCHING?

Eye twitching is a repetitive, uncontrollable blinking or spasm of the eyelid, usually the upper lid. Eye twitching (blepharospasm) usually affects the eye muscles of both eyes. If you have eye twitching, you may have an involuntary movement that recurs every several seconds for a minute or two.

Most people develop a minor eyelid twitch at some point in their lives. Although the cause is generally unknown, it may be associated with fatigue, stress or caffeine. This minor form of twitch is painless and harmless. It usually goes away on its own. 38

HOW HEART SMART ARE YOU?

If you’re like most people, you think that heart disease is a problem for other folks. But heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the U.S. It is also a major cause of disability, according to the National Institutes of Health. There are many different forms of heart disease. The most common cause of heart disease is narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart itself. This is called coronary artery disease and happens slowly over time. It’s the major reason people have heart attacks. Other kinds of heart problems may happen to the valves in the heart, or the heart may not pump well and cause heart failure. Some people are born with heart disease. Take this quiz to find out how heart smart you are! 1. Regular physical activity is an important step toward a healthy heart. What other steps can you take to reduce your risk of heart attack? A. Stop smoking B. Reduce high blood pressure C. Maintain proper blood cholesterol levels D. All of the above 2. If running marathons is not your idea of regular exercise, you can work up a heart-healthy sweat in your everyday life in a lot of ways. What are some of them? A. Gardening B. Walking C. Vigorous vacuuming D. All of the above 3. Besides being an important way to get ready for bathing suit season, regular physical activity can also benefit your health and well-being by improving which of the following? A. Blood cholesterol B. High blood pressure C. Weight D. All of the above 4. The main cause of high blood pressure is: A. Stress B. Obesity C. Unknown D. Aging 5. Saturated fat can raise your cholesterol level and increase your

risk of cardiovascular disease. Which of these is a saturated fat? A. Olive oil B. Flax oil C. Butter D. Safflower oil 6. At what age should you start getting checked for cardiovascular disease if you’re a healthy adult? A. 20 B. 30 C. 40 D. 50 7. How many women die of cardiovascular disease in the U.S.? A. About 1 every minute B. About 1 every 5 minutes C. About 1 every 7 minutes D. About 1 every 9 minutes 8. You don’t need to worry about your children’s cardiovascular disease risk until they’re at least 18. A. True B. False 9. Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of American women. A. True B.
