EFFICIENT WASTEWATER TREATMENT BY VACUUM EVAPORATION

Solutex vacuum evaporators provide a way to effectively treat industrial wastewater easily in one single step. The user friendly technology significantly reduces wastewater with high concentration of wastes allowing you to recover up to 98% clean water for reuse and concentrating the waste for disposal or to recover valuable materials. This results in major cost savings and a viable alternative to waste disposal through specialised companies. Water evaporators can also help reduce costs as they generally require less maintenance than other types of system.

Vacuum evaporators can remove suspended solids, salts, emulsified oils, heavy metals, colour pigments , dyes and other non-volatile products producing a distillate that in most cases can go the sewer system without further treatment in compliance with local regulation or can be recycled for use again thus promoting a zero liquid discharge process.

The range of standard and custom built equipment ensures a solution to every application.

When dealing with encrusting liquids like paints or inks, an evaporator with internal boiler scraper (self-cleaning) is available to prevent waste sticking to the boiler walls. Standard equipment is built in stainless steel 316L but can be made from super duplex steel when dealing with corrosive materials like salts.

It is a simple, robust and proven technology for efficiently treating wastewater and copes well with changes in both the volume and concentration of the effluent to be treated. It also ideal when waste streams contain various contaminants like cutting oils, suspended solids,

metals, phosphates, surfactants etc that other process can find difficult to treat.

The low energy, low temperature systems use a heat pump or existing heat sources such as hot water or steam when available. Heat pump systems are available from 10 to 1500 litres per hour and are one of the only treatment processes that do not require additional treatment steps and provide high quality distillate for reuse.

Evaporators are fully automatic and can operate 24/7 with only minimal intervention by personnel required. Process control is by PLC with touch screen. The operating system comes with a USB output that allows you to

connect a mobile device (smartphone) to be used as a router for data transfer and to save trend values. The system allows data transfer to a factory technician for diagnosis in the event of a fault and often avoids the need for an engineer to attend site.

Vacuum evaporation is a competitive alternative to most other treatment systems as the only treatment process capable of reducing the effluent to a minimum amount of waste.

Solutex provide laboratory testing of wastewater to verify potential results.

Become an Acknowledged Leader in Surface Engineering and Materials Finishing: INDUSTRY RECOGNISED TRAINING COURSES FROM THE IMF

Are you involved with the application of coatings to enhance and protect your products? Do you need to meet client specifications to ensure the longevity of your components? Does the complex world of surface engineering and materials finishing cause you headaches?

If so, the courses offered by the Institute of Materials Finishing (IMF) could be your solution!

The IMF have been promoting knowledge in the surface finishing industries, both inorganic surface treatments including plating and the application of organic paints, lacquers and varnishes for many years. Large numbers of engineers and technicians across a multitude of industries have benefitted from the knowledge gained to enhance their careers, their standing within industry and the ability to problem solve the many challenges they face in their daily working lives!

Starting with the Foundation level course, students gain knowledge on all aspects of materials finishing, specifically aimed at their own industry requirements, but to include sections on Health & Safety, the Environment and Surface Finishing and Corrosion Protection. There is no need for a science background to be able to successfully complete a foundation course.

The Foundation Course requires study of 15 sections and requires the submission of 2 marked assignments followed by an end examination. The course, conducted by distance learning will take 16 weeks to complete. There are three specific study routes to choose from; electroplating, organic coatings and aerospace finishing. On successful completion, the student is awarded the Foundation Certificate.

To follow on, students can then elect to progress to the Technician level modules, which give more in-depth knowledge for key finishing technologies, their application and best practice methods. Again, both inorganic and organic technologies can be studied to match the industry requirements. There is a choice of eight modules, which provide study in applicable areas of surface finishing best matched to your needs.

Like the Foundation course, study is by distance learning, and the student is required to complete four marked assignments and pass an examination.

Passing two technician modules leads to the award of Technician Certificate; passing four modules leads to the award of an Advanced Technician Certificate.

If you feel your career could benefit from being a recognised specialist in your particular branch of Surface Engineering or Materials Finishing, then contact the IMF today.

Speak with our training manager Karen Yates on +44 (0)121 622 7287 or email karen@materialsfinishing.org.

Move your career to the next level and join the finishing community and all the benefits that gives through the IMF.

BCF CEO TOM BOWTELL HOSTS OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF WORLD PAINT AND COATINGS WEEK AT 2025 EUROPEAN COATINGS SHOW

The inaugural World Paint and Coatings Week was officially launched at the European Coatings Show (ECS) on its opening day by Tom Bowtell, CEO of the British Coatings Federation (BCF) and President of the World Coatings Council (WCC). The campaign week has been organised through the WCC in cooperation and partnership with its various national coatings association members from around the globe.

Running from 24th – 28th March, World Paint and Coatings Week is focused on engaging with the public through social media, although other engagement events may also be organised in some countries. The week has been split into five themes, one for each day: essential coatings; sustainable coatings; innovative coatings; valuable coatings; and careers in coatings. National coatings associations have been posting about how coatings collectively contribute to these areas, while individual companies have shared case studies about how their own products help make the world a better place. It is intended to create a critical mass of activity to increase the reach of the key messages and ensure more people learn about the importance of coatings than individual organisations working on their own could achieve.

The launch backdrop of ECS 2025 – the largest show on record, with over 1,200 exhibitors from over 60 countries and tens of thousands of delegates in attendance – served to demonstrate the strength of the coatings sector globally. But Bowtell explained that the rationale of World Paint and Coatings Week was to reach out beyond

BCF CEO and World Coatings Council President Tom Bowtell celebrating the launch of the inaugural World Paint and Coatings Week at the European Coatings Show in Nuremberg, Germany.

the people attending the convention centre this week and explain to them – the general public and policy- and decision-makers – just how important coatings are to the global economy and society.

Speaking at the launch, Tom Bowtell said:

“I am thrilled to be launching the first World Paint and Coatings Week here at the European Coatings Show in front of so many friends and colleagues. All of us who work in the industry know just how important coatings are to the economy and to everyday life. Almost every solid object will have a coating that is designed to make it look better, work better, or last longer – or a combination of all three. However, too often this crucial contribution is overlooked, or not understood, by the general public. World Paint and Coatings Week sets out to rectify that.

“So, I encourage everyone involved in the sector to follow the World Coatings Council on social media, share their posts, and to join in with your own company case studies explaining how they are crucial to society. Whether it is through job creation or helping in the drive towards greater sustainability, working at the cutting edge of innovation or providing essential coatings that enable other parts of industry to function. The Week is already a success, and I look forward to it growing in scale and scope in future years.”

ALLWATER TECHNOLOGIES ASSISTS VERTIK-AL’S SMOOTH TRANSITION TO A CHROMIUM-FREE FUTURE

All Aluminium must undergo rigorous cleaning and pretreatment processes before being powder coated. Used for its anti-corrosion properties, Chromium conversion coating has been used in the pre-treatment of Aluminium extrusions for many years. However, being identified as highly carcinogenic, the European Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) has red-listed Chromium, prohibiting its use in powder coating manufacturing processes.

Vertik-Al, one of the UK’s largest independent powder coaters, is known for its high-quality vertical and horizontal Aluminium powder coating finishes. Active within a range of industries, such as, construction, rail, and automotive, they manufacture a multitude of goods, including extrusions, windows, doors, curtain walling and cladding.

When Vertik-Al heard about this new regulative requirement, it prompted them to call AllWater Technologies (AWT) Ltd to support this shift from a Hexavalent Chromium to a Chromiumfree powder-coating Aluminium manufacturing process.

AllWater Technologies Ltd are experts in industrial water treatment and have been a driving force in industrial water treatment innovation for over 13 years. Led by founding Director, Derek Spriggs, AllWater have supported companies from all around the World in all their industrial water treatment needs. As one of the only players in the UK to provide totally bespoke water treatment systems tailored to suit each client’s specific and exacting requirements, including reverse osmosis, effluent solutions, as well as offering innovative, effective and reliable demineralisation systems, AllWater seeks to provide a service above and beyond that offered by their competitors. From thorough exploration and analysis, their team conceptualise the chemistry, design the project, build the units, and instal the entire system, complete with innovative solutions and technology to assist in ensuring systems maintain optimum efficiency.

Having already enjoyed a long-running service contract with AllWater and recognising them as a trusted partner in successfully navigating complex industrial water treatment challenges, Vertik-Al, naturally, reached out to AWT to assist them in coming up with a solution to running Chromium-free.

Meeting Vertik-Al's Critical Requirements

Vertik-Al's transition from Hexavalent Chromium to Chromium-free processes posed significant challenges, particularly in water volume and quality requirements. With stringent standards mandating water purity levels below 30 µS/cm, Vertik-Al needed a highdemand, reliable water supply capable of meeting these exacting standards. Moreover, the shift to Chromium-free processes necessitated thorough rinsing with demineralised water, adding complexity to the water treatment process. Despite these challenges, Vertik-Al couldn't afford production downtime, requiring the seamless integration of new water treatment systems while keeping existing ones operational. However, before the new system could even be designed, AllWater faced a significant hurdle: the absence of available space for installing the required new system.

Smart Solutions by AllWater Technologies Ltd

Facing the challenge of limited space for system expansion, Vertik-Al and AllWater’s combined ingenuity devised a neat solution to overcome this

obstacle. With calculated planning, AllWater’s Engineers designed the system using SolidWorks software’s 3D modelling to ensure the new plant would fit seamlessly into the existing infrastructure. By Vertik-Al building a new structure to enable use of intermediate bulk containers (IBC’s) and reagent day tanks they were able to transition away from the existing semi-bulk tanks which were overdue replacement. The 3D modelling technology, coupled with the new structure, allowed for the strategic placement of the Duplex Deionisation System. The new system was fully commissioned in tandem with use of the existing DI plant, enabling a smooth transition without any loss of production.

Once the new plant was up and running and Vertik-Al were 100% satisfied with operation the old DI plant was refurbished including integration into the new control system, allowing for much greater levels of monitoring and providing additional capacity in case of future expansion or need for maintenance.

As part of the new installation

AllWater installed new 100% bunded chemical day tanks which are automatically filled under gravity from IBC’s. Radar sensors were also installed on the tanks to monitor and record exactly how much chemical is used each time during a regeneration, with an integrated alarm system to notify if too much or too little chemical is drawn. This simple but smart approach provided visibility into chemical usage through real-time monitoring of chemical usage. Service run-time for each stream is also monitored and recorded, so that any abnormalities in capacity can be detected.

To facilitate ease of installation and enhance durability, the DI streams were mounted on corrosion-proof polypropylene skids. Each skid was equipped with a local control panel featuring conductivity monitoring, while a main control panel was supplemented with remote input/ output capabilities to minimise on-site wiring between the main control panel and satellite panels.

Value-added Service Ensures Optimum Efficiency

When REACH presented the requirement to transition to Chromium-free manufacturing processes, Vertik-Al sought advice from the industrial water treatment experts. Having already forged a strong working relationship through proven service excellence, AllWater were called in to assist in developing a Chromium-free water treatment system on Vertik-Al’s vertical Aluminium powder coating line.

AllWater were faced with some major challenges, from stringent water quality requirements to the need for uninterrupted production, and the lack of space to build a new system. However, with strategic and smart solutions provided by AllWater, these challenges were not only overcome but transformed into opportunities for improvement, growth and efficiency.

The seamless integration of new water treatment systems, despite spatial constraints, speaks to the customer

service AllWater offers, helping to create a relationship where they can work together with Vertik-Al to achieve the required result. The successful implementation of the space-creating method is testament to AllWater’s can-do attitude, proving they can think ‘outside the box’ to complete the task, using what’s available to them.

With expert chemical and design engineers, the exacting requirements were met to the most efficient standards. The introduction of a Duplex Demineralisation System ensured the output flow could create a high-demand, reliable water supply meeting water purity levels well below the 30 µS/cm required.

By relocating infrastructure and implementing advanced monitoring technologies, Vertik-Al gained not only expanded water treatment capabilities but also enhanced visibility and control over their processes. With the ability to monitor chemical usage and system performance remotely, AllWater ensures that Vertik-Al's water treatment infrastructure operates at peak efficiency, facilitating

uninterrupted production. With integrating the old system into the new as back up, along with the ability to continually monitor performance, AllWater has eliminated the requirement for any production downtime whilst breathing new life into a piece of equipment which was previously reaching the end of its serviceable life.

The real-time performance monitoring and proactive support offered by AllWater demonstrate their commitment to the continuity of Vertik-Al's operational success. Following the successful commissioning of the new system, comprehensive training was provided to all site personnel, ensuring they were fully equipped to operate and maintain the new equipment. Additionally, to support ongoing operations, all project documentation, including relevant manuals and drawings, is available through the secure client access portal on AllWater Technologies’ website, ensuring Vertik-Al has easy access to all necessary resources. This value-added support is an example of how important AllWater regards their clients as well as providing the correct level of support each client requires. This project confirms that AllWater Technologies Ltd is not only seated at the head of the table when providing scientific solutions to industrial water treatment conundrums but is at the forefront in customer care too.

OPTIMISING WASTEWATER

MANAGEMENT WITH MOBILE WATER SOLUTIONS

In an era of water scarcity and stringent environmental regulations, industrial plant operators face unprecedented challenges in managing wastewater. With 80% of global wastewater flowing back into ecosystems untreated, efficient strategies are urgently needed. Mobile water treatment is emerging as a key solution to address these issues.

Plant operators are increasingly turning to mobile water treatment solutions to improve efficiency and reliability of wastewater treatment. Companies like Mobile Water Solutions, part of Nijhuis Saur Industries, are helping sites safeguard operational licenses while lowering their environmental footprint.

When go Mobile?

Mobile wastewater solutions offer flexibility and efficiency in various scenarios. In emergency situations, they can quickly address equipment failures or contamination events, ensuring minimal disruption to operations. During periods of increased production

or seasonal fluctuations, these solutions can provide temporary capacity increases without permanent infrastructure changes.

Mobile units offer an excellent opportunity for pilot testing before full-scale implementation, minimising risk and allowing for fine-tuning of processes.

During planned maintenance of permanent facilities, mobile solutions can support operations, preventing downtimes. Additionally, mobile units can help companies rapidly adapt to new discharge requirements, ensuring continuous compliance.

Benefits of Mobile Wastewater Solutions

Mobile units allow companies to manage water treatment costs as operational expenses rather than capital investments. Pay-as-you-go contracts, from 1 day to 7 years, improve financial planning through predictable payments.

In urgent situations, mobile units can be rapidly deployed, bypassing lengthy processes associated with permanent installations. Scalability allows companies to easily adjust treatment capacity based on changing needs.

Mobile solutions provide access to the latest wastewater treatment and reuse technologies, such as advanced membrane filtration, without major capital investment. These advanced technologies convert wastewater into high-quality reusable water, promoting circular water management.

Case Study: German Refinery Embraces

Mobile Water Solutions

A German refinery partnered with Mobile Water Solutions to address water scarcity and comply with discharge regulations through two innovative projects.

The first project focused on the reuse of reverse osmosis concentrate. Optimising the treatment process with two mobile reverse osmosis units led to lower concentrate conductivity,

which in turn maximised permeate production, reduced waste, and increased the return of high-quality water to the refinery system.

The second project tackled wastewater reuse. This initiative integrated advanced ultrafiltration with upstream NaOCl dosing and downstream Activated Carbon filtration. Complemented by a reverse osmosis trailer, this system allowed the refinery to repurpose a significant portion of effluent from the on-site wastewater treatment plant.

These achievements not only aligned with environmental standards but also supported the refinery's "water positive" initiatives.

Conclusion

Mobile Water Solutions offers a flexible, efficient, and cost-effective approach to wastewater management. With one of the largest mobile water and wastewater fleets, numerous depots, and a dedicated team across Europe, Mobile Water Solutions presents itself as the partner of choice for industrial plant operators.

By embracing mobile wastewater treatment and reuse technologies, companies can ensure compliance and operational continuity while reducing their freshwater consumption and environmental impact.

Cost-efficient and precise blast-cleaning of very large steel plates in a challenging environment

LEADING STEEL PRODUCER INVESTS IN A RÖSLER PRESERVATION LINE

One of the largest steel producers in North America recently built a huge rolling mill for steel plates in an industrial park in the United States. The new rolling mill is setting new standards regarding the size of the produced steel plates and is one of the most productive steel plants in North America. Besides supplying its customers in the oil and offshore industry with particularly thick and large rolled steel plates the company also offers the surface treatment of the plates as an additional service. The latter, enthusiastically welcomed by the industry, was implemented with a Rösler preservation line, type KON 47/3-HD, that was specially designed for rolling mills.

Large and heavy steel plates demand a high degree of precision and maximum performance. With a total length of 75 meters, a blast media throughput of 3.7 metric tons per minute and an annual capacity of 122,000 metric tons the preservation

line, supplied to a North American steel producer, is one of the largest designed and built by Rösler Oberflächentechnik GmbH, a true powerhouse! But this performance is necessary, because the processed plates are very big. Depending on the

rolling thickness of the original steel slab, the plates can be up to 4,300 mm wide, 18,000 mm long and have a max. thickness of 203 mm. Marcus Witter, global sales expert at Rösler, explains: “These dimensions presented a real technical challenge. The blast cleaning operation for such large and heavy plates, with a maximum weight of over 45 metric tons, demands extra robust equipment that is not only extremely productive but also works with a high degree of precision. Otherwise, the specified surface cleanliness of SA 2,5 cannot be achieved. The technical requirements and a tight delivery time made this project very challenging”.

Rösler blast and prime line offers an additional benefit

The position of the Rösler equipment at the very end of the process chain clearly demonstrates its importance for the entire manufacturing operation: The Rösler preservation line offers not just standard surface treatment but an optional additional service. This represents a true value for steel distributors as well as the end users: The customer can choose between a raw plate, as it comes from the rolling mill, or a plate that has been only shot blasted or shot blasted and painted. “Depending on the final use of the steel plate, this choice can be an attractive additional value. For example, plates that must be transported over long distances can be prone to corrosion. In such cases it helps to blast-clean the plates and apply a corrosion-resistant coating. This not only protects the plates during transport but, at the same time, saves two steps in the customer’s own

production: He can immediately cut and weld the material without having to remove the weldable primer”, explains the Rösler global sales expert Marcus Witter. In the new preservation line, the company is mostly utilizing solvent-based primers as required for ship building and offshore operations. The same primers are also frequently used by traditional steel fabricators. However, because of stricter environmental demands, the Rösler preservation lines can also process water-based lacquers.

Equipment design

and hardware ensure a maximum of operational and cost efficiency

A crucial part of the Rösler preservation line is a roller conveyor shot blast machine. The machine entrance is equipped with a blow-off system for removing contaminants from the plates and a pre-heater. The latter heats up the work pieces to the optimal operating temperature required for the subsequent painting operation. The pre-heater, equipped with two highly efficient gas burners, heats the air to 260° C and is running in recirculating mode. With a short intermediate roller conveyor the steel plates are then transferred into the shot blast machine supplied with

ten Gamma 400G turbines, each with an installed power of 30 kW. Depending on the plate width, some turbines can automatically be turned off. This improves the overall equipment efficiency, lowers the wear rate and, thus, helps reduce the operational costs.

The shot blast machine contains an automatic plate width recognition system that – depending on the

actual width – selectively turns off some turbines. For this reason, to ensure an optimal cleaning effect with even distribution of the blast media, the shot blast machine was equipped with an improved blast media distribution and recycling system.

In view of a work piece weight of 7 metric tons per running meter Rösler installed a special heavy-duty roller conveyor system. And to minimize wear, caused by the continuously high blast media throughput of 3.7 metric tons per minute, the entire blast chamber was fabricated from 8 mm thick manganese steel and additionally lined with exchangeable manganese steel plates, also 8 mm thick.

After the shot blasting operation an integrated cleaning station removes residual blast media and dust from the plates, so that they are completely clean, when entering the automatic paint booth. There, a two-component paint is applied onto the work piece surface with an airless paint system that is controlled by sensors recognizing the plate width and length as well as the transport speed. This helps minimize overspray, the unnecessary blowing of paint into the booth, resulting in lower paint consumption and higher operational efficiency. After it has been dried, the paint on the steel plates must have

a thickness of between 15 and 25 µm (590 – 985 micro inches).

Once the paint has been applied, the plates are transported into the dryer, heated to about 60° C. There, a special slat conveyor ensures that the paint on the lower plate surface is not scratched. This ensures that the plates leave the dryer with no visible defects. A thermal post-combustion system cleans the exhaust air from the paint booth and dryer, so that the legal emission limits can be easily met.

Successful commissioning despite a difficult installation environment and tight deadline

The Rösler blast and prime line was commissioned at the end of 2023 and since then has been running with no problems, producing excellent results. Because of a very tight time frame for the entire rolling mill the installation of the blast and prime line represented

a real challenge. For, while the preservation line was installed, the building, including outer walls, roof and other sections, had to be completed. Marcus Witter concludes: “This represented a big challenge for the installation of the preservation line. But we did everything in our power to support our customer in meeting the tight project deadline. In the end we were successful, because the project teams on both sides were in daily contact with each other. The atmosphere between the customer and us was always characterized by a high degree of cooperation. In the end we could successfully conclude this challenging project”.

Rösler Oberflächentechnik GmbH is proud to have been a partner in this important project and looks forward to being part of future projects with the same complexity.

For over 80 years, the privately owned Rösler Oberflächentechnik GmbH has been actively engaged in the field of

surface preparation and surface finishing. MECWASH SOLVES CLEANING CHALLENGE FOR ADDITIVE MANUFACTURER MATERIALS SOLUTIONS

MecWash Systems worked alongside pioneering additive manufacturer, Material Solutions, to create a bespoke component cleaning system and brand-new chemical process to address the unique challenges of 3D printing.

Additive manufacturing (AM) has enabled companies to manufacture components with complex geometric shapes customised to meet challenging environments in aerospace, power generation and motorsport. Components can be created from the inside out, incorporating integral features in places which traditional casting and machining simply can’t access.

The manufacturing process melts metal powders layer by layer, using lasers to trace slices of CAD models in layers of powdered high-performance metal alloys to form solid objects. The AM printing process leaves powder particles as residue which must be cleaned off. However, the metal used by Material Solutions is incredibly sensitive and can stain when cleaned. The question is how to clean the various complex parts in a mix of

sensitive super alloy materials without staining.

The in-house chemist at MecWash, Dave Pawson drew on a lifetime of experience to solve the problem. His understanding of chemical wash solutions is unparalleled in the industry, having created thousands of unique solutions for MecWash customers over the years:

“We were determined to create a process that ensured the impressive components created by Materials Solutions would be entirely free from residual materials.

“The incomplete removal of residuals, such as powder, dye penetrant and coolant, can severely affect the component’s functionality and integrity. We took great care in analysing the samples to identify the opportunities and how we could attain a high-quality wash of the components,” said Doc.

THE BENEFITS OF WET BLASTING FOR THE AEROSPACE MRO INDUSTRY

In aerospace maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), surface preparation is crucial for component longevity and performance. Wet blasting, or vapor blasting, has emerged as a precise, efficient, and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional dry blasting and chemical treatments. This article explores its advantages for aerospace MRO applications.

Superior surface preparation

Wet blasting combines abrasive media with water, creating a dust-free process that ensures uniform surface preparation without damaging delicate aerospace components. Unlike dry blasting, which generates excessive heat and erosion, wet blasting gently cleans surfaces, making it ideal for turbine blades, landing gear, and composite structures.

Peening to enhance fatigue resistance

The peening process reduces the likelihood of cracking or failure under high stress conditions. Components like fan and turbine blades are peened by wet blasting to the same intensity as dry shot peening but are left with a superior surface finish. Wet blasting also reduces impact and microfracturing by cushioning abrasive particles with water. This prevents contaminant embedding, reduces surface roughness, and extends the lifespan of critical parts.

Corrosion prevention and cleanliness

Unlike dry blasting, which can leave contaminants or induce static buildup, wet blasting thoroughly removes grease,

coatings, oxidation, and foreign object debris (FOD). Simultaneously with this cleaning process, surfaces are finished to a specific Ra tolerance that enhances the adhesion of protective coatings, ensuring longterm component durability.

Environmentally friendly and safer

Dry blasting produces airborne dust and hazardous particulates, posing health risks to workers. The process often requires extensive and expensive containment as a result.

Aircraft Wheel Before Wet Blasting
Aircraft Wheel After Wet Blasting

Wet blasting suppresses dust, improving air quality and reducing protective equipment costs. Additionally, it consumes less abrasive media and recycles that media along with the water in the system, making it a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

Precision and versatility

Aerospace components often have intricate geometries and tight tolerances. Wet blasting provides controlled material removal, ensuring precise finishes without compromising accuracy. It is versatile for applications like paint stripping, composite bonding preparation, corrosion removal, and surface texturing for non-destructive testing (NDT).

Cost-effective and efficient

Wet blasting improves operational efficiency by streamlining cleaning and preparation. It reduces abrasive consumption and equipment wear, lowering maintenance costs. The ability to automate the process enhances consistency and repeatability, optimising MRO workflows and reducing downtime.

In conclusion

As aerospace MRO providers seek advanced surface treatment solutions, wet blasting stands out for its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental benefits. By delivering superior surface preparation, reducing component wear, preventing corrosion, and improving safety, wet blasting is fast becoming an industry standard. Embracing this technology ensures higher-quality maintenance, regulatory compliance, and extended service life for aerospace components.

DUPLEX COATING SYSTEM THICKNESS MEASUREMENT

Featured Product: PosiTector 6000 FNDS

Two primary strategies for protecting steel from corrosion are:

The PosiTector 6000 FNDS from DeFelsko is a cuttingedge coating thickness gauge that allows users to non-destructively measure the thickness of both the paint and zinc galvanize layers in a duplex coating system on ferrous substrates with just a single reading.

Understanding Duplex Coatings and Their Role in Corrosion Protection

Steel is vulnerable to corrosion when an electrolyte forms a connection between anode and cathode sites on its surface, creating a corrosion cell that leads to the formation of rust (iron oxide). To prevent this, it's crucial to inhibit the formation of such cells.

1. Cathodic Protection – This method uses a sacrificial anode, like zinc, to protect the steel.

2. Barrier Protection – A protective coating, such as paint, prevents electrolytes from making contact with the steel.

Duplex coating systems combine these two methods, typically using a layer of paint or powder coating over galvanized steel (either hot-dip, electro, or zinc spray metallizing). This duallayer system provides superior corrosion protection compared to using either method independently.

Key Benefits of Duplex Coating Systems:

Extended lifespan of both the coating system and the underlying steel.

Reduced maintenance cycles, resulting in less frequent touch-ups and lower repair costs.

Enhanced aesthetics and colour coding for improved visual appeal.

Challenges in Measuring Duplex Coating Thickness

Measuring the thickness of duplex coating layers can be tricky with conventional instruments. Typically, a magnetic coating thickness gauge, like the PosiTector 6000 FS1 or PosiTest DFT Ferrous, is first used to measure the thickness of the zinc layer. Then, the same instrument measures the combined thickness of both the zinc and paint layers. The difference between these readings gives an estimate of the paint layer's thickness. However, this method assumes that the zinc thickness is consistent across the entire surface.

In reality, the zinc layer's thickness can vary due to several factors, such as the steel's roughness, chemistry, and design, or how the galvanization process was applied. Any of these variations can lead to uneven zinc coatings, making the measurement process more challenging. Another conventional method uses a combination of magnetic and eddycurrent probes, like the PosiTector 6000 FN3. With this approach, one reading is taken in eddy-current mode to measure the paint thickness, and another in magnetic mode to measure the total coating thickness. The difference between the two readings is used to determine the zinc layer thickness. However, this method also assumes a uniform zinc coating, which may not always be the case.

Both of these methods are timeconsuming and prone to errors, especially when the zinc thickness varies across a part or structure.

The PosiTector 6000 FNDS Solution

DeFelsko’s PosiTector 6000 FNDS duplex coating thickness gauge streamlines the measurement process by providing an accurate, singlereading solution. In Duplex Mode, the PosiTector 6000 FNDS simultaneously applies both magnetic (ferrous) and eddy current (non-ferrous) principles

to calculate and display the thickness of both the paint and zinc layers individually.

The magnetic principle measures the total paint and zinc thickness over the ferrous substrate.

The eddy current principle measures the paint thickness over the non-ferrous zinc layer.

The zinc layer thickness is then determined by subtracting the paint thickness from the total paint/zinc thickness measurement.

When not in Duplex Mode, the gauge operates like a traditional combination

ferrous/non-ferrous instrument (similar to the PosiTector 6000 FNS probe). This mode is perfect for measuring non-magnetic coatings over steel and non-conductive coatings over nonferrous metal substrates and coatings on Stainless steel in ‘N LOCK’ mode.

PAINT CURE MONITORING –

PHOENIXTM HELPING DRIVE

QUALITY AND COATING OVEN ECONOMY

Monitoring what is happening inside your cure oven is critical to understand how your paint or powder coating operation is working. PhoenixTM understands the challenges you face running your operation, to not only get the coating cure quality you need but keep your oven technology up and running as economically as physically possible. With energy costs and ever-increasing labour costs you need to make your operation run efficiently and make those costs savings wherever possible. To help you get the best out of your oven PhoenixTM offer a monitoring toolbox to suit your specific needs.

Comprehensive Product Temperature Profiling

The PhoenixTM Thru-process temperature profiling systems provide you with an accurate record of what temperature your product experienced in the cure oven. Thermal View Finishing software provided with the system converts the raw temperature profile data into meaningful information. The software is designed with all the analysis and process documentation tools to fully interpret and communicate paint cure performance.

To provide an accurate method to quantify cure PhoenixTM have developed its own mathematical index of cure calculation referred to as the Phoenix Factor. The Phoenix Factor gives the paint technician a perfect numerical tool to easily and accurately confirm that the cure process is working to the coating supplier specification, guaranteeing quality of cure and eliminating rejects or need for rework and corresponding cost. Irrespective of the profile shape, as all profile data is utilised, it’s as simple checking for a correct consistent Phoenix Factor. A value close to 1.00 equals perfect theoretical cure with < 1.00 potential under cure >1.00 potential over cure.

With the on-going energy crisis, the tool provides a further benefit in that is allows operational characteristics of the oven (zone set temperatures / line speeds) to be optimised with confidence and with no risk to the cure quality. Consider what effect potentially dropping your oven set-point temperatures by 10 °C could make to the operating cost of the oven over a month or year! When setting up new processes or changing energy / heating sources you can monitor your process to permit quick effective optimisation. As they say look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves. Even in coating every little counts!

Oven Temperature Uniformity Surveying (TUS)

To perform a Temperature Uniformity Survey (TUS) to comply with CQI-12, PhoenixTM have developed a software package specifically designed to allow efficient surveying of the oven.

At critical TUS temperature levels data logger recorded data can be analysed to check that at all points on the TUS frame (oven working zone) are within a specified tolerance (Target TUS temperature ± Tolerance) and remain in tolerance for the period of the specified TUS test. Graphical tools and analysis tables allow easy clear data interpretation. Accuracy of data can be maximized through auto application of both data logger and thermocouple correction factors. All analysis and reporting requirements of the CQI-12 are provided by the software to verify full compliance.

For batch oven processes the data logger can be used externally to the oven trailing TUS thermocouples without need for thermal protection. Each thermocouple is fixed to the designated location on the TUS frame positioned in the oven cavity. Live data generated during the run can be viewed in real time in the survey software during the TUS run. Data transfer from data logger to PC can be performed by either a hardwired comms cable, Bluetooth or optional RF telemetry feature. PhoenixTM can offer a range of data

logger options to suit the monitoring challenges.

The PTM4220 stand-alone data logger is designed specifically for external monitoring of batch oven processes ideal for performing Temperature Uniformity Surveys to CQI-12. Alternatively, the conventional data logger range (PTM1210/PTM1510) can be used also for TUS work either external monitoring of batch ovens or even conveyorised ovens. For such continuous processes the data logger travels safely, protected by a suitable thermal barrier, with the TUS frame (volumetric or plane method) through the process. Live data can be transferred if the RF telemetry option is used, otherwise, the TUS run can be simply downloaded post run for full TUS analysis and reporting.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR SURFACE

Optimising

adhesion for reliable bonding processes

Surface energy

Successful, strong and reliable bonding and coating processes start with understanding your surface. Whether it’s adhesives, inks, sealants, paints, coatings, tapes… or barnacles, the effectiveness of adhesion is influenced by properties of the surface like cleanliness, roughness, and surface energy. Here, Alison Fox, Dyne Sales Manager at Intertronics, outlines how you can find the right approach for optimising your adhesion.

Understanding surface energy is fundamental to achieving strong and reliable bonds. Using tools to analyse and quantify a substrate’s surface energy will help you make informed decisions on material choice and optimising adhesion. Surface energy is an inherent property of a material. For example, stainless steel has a high surface energy of ~700–1100 dynes/cm, while polypropylene is low at ~29–31 dynes/cm.

Wetting

Good wetting is necessary for good adhesion. Wetting is the ability of a liquid (such as an adhesive) to spread

across and make intimate contact with a solid surface. This behaviour is largely governed by the surface energy of the solid - higher surface energy promotes better wetting and stronger adhesion, while low surface energy resists wetting. This is one reason why it is easier to bond stainless steel than polypropylene. The surface tension of the adhesive is the other half of the equation. Good wetting occurs when the adhesive’s surface tension is equal to or lower than the surface energy of the substrate.

Measuring

A quick and easy method of measuring surface energy is using Dyne inks. These liquids are available in different “dyne” levels. By applying the ink onto your surface and observing if it spreads out (does wet) or beads up (does not wet), you can determine whether a substrate is above or below a specific surface energy. These inks are frequently purchased in convenient handheld applicator pens.

For more analytical results, instruments like optical tensiometers measure the contact angle - the angle formed at the junction where a liquid adhesive meets a solid surface. This quantifies how well the liquid wets the surface. These instruments are available for lab use, or handheld for mobile or shop floor testing, and can give you insight on surface energy and surface tension.

Cleanliness

Contamination on a surface can significantly impact adhesion, coating performance, and overall product quality. Surface preparation may be required prior to a bonding process; from a simple solvent wipe to a sophisticated cleaning or abrasion process. Contamination can be detected by surface energy or contact angle measurements.

Tools like the SITA CleanoSpector can assess the cleanliness of your metal part by checking for oil, grease, coolants, release agents, cleaning fluids and other organics.

Surface treatment

Plastics like polypropylene and polyethylene are functionally useful, but have inherently low surface energy. Where the surface energy of the substrate is too low for optimal adhesion, then some form of surface treatment may help. Some adhesive chemistries (e.g. cyanoacrylate adhesives) can use a specific chemical primer to treat the surface prior bonding of low surface energy plastics or rubbers.

Non-chemical treatments can improve the surface energy to enhance bonding. Plasma surface treatment can modify surfaces at a molecular

level, improving adhesion and wetting. Instruments like the PiezoBrush PZ3 allows the benefits of plasma surface treatment in a convenient and lightweight handheld format. Additionally, plasma treatment can achieve ultra-fine cleaning of organic contaminants from the surface, making mechanical and molecular changes to the surface of the substrate without changing the surface’s appearance.

Material specific

Adhesives, coatings and inks are formulated to have good adhesion to specific substrates. A metal bonder is not the same as a plastics bonder. There are specific adhesives designed for low surface energy plastics. For example, SCIGRIP SG400 LSE can bond polypropylene, polyethylene, other polyolefins, and thermoplastic

elastomers without using primers and with little to no surface preparation. As a result, its fast cure time and high initial tack facilitate efficient assembly, reducing production time and increasing productivity.

Understanding your surface is important to achieve the best adhesion results. Intertronics offers measurement instruments, plasma tools, and specialist adhesives depending on your application. To discuss the right choice for your adhesive process, get in touch via alison.fox@intertronics.co.uk.
