HILLCREST CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

CONNECTING COMMUNITIES THROUGH INNOVATIVE EDUCATION

Education has always been a vital element in shaping the society we live in today. As we reflect on the past, we recognise the profound changes that have occurred in the way education was approached and delivered. The evolution of education reflects the values and beliefs of the time and has adapted to meet the needs of different societies and generations.
At this symposium, we will delve into adapting education to meet the future needs of our students. As we look ahead, we will recognise the next wave of technological changes which will impact education processes. There are many opportunities which lie before us including partnership, shared learning, professional collaboration, and the value of cultural friendships.
We invite you to explore these essential aspects of education through our symposium presentations. Together, we will gain insight into how education has shaped our society and how we can adapt to meet future challenges and opportunities.

The College's educational structure comprises of our four phases of learning, seven guiding values, and five key elements of learning. The four phases of learning are:
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING AGES 3 - 5
This community endeavours to create a positive disposition towards learning where children can grow and develop into competent and confident learners in a dynamic, experiential learning environment; responsive to their strengths, needs, abilities, and interests.
GUIDED LEARNING PREP - YEAR 4
Guided learning blends a model of explicit instruction and active โhands-onโ learning to engage children as they develop knowledge and explore key foundational skills. Guided learning leads children to increasing independence and autonomy as confident learners who have knowledge and skills to embrace an ever-changing world.
DESIGN-CENTRED LEARNING YEARS 5 - 8
This community is founded in a middle schooling philosophy based on building relationships and student engagement while focusing on preparing future-focused learners. At a stage where students are undergoing many physical, social, and emotional changes, students require a focused approach to meet their specific needs.
STUDENT-DRIVEN PATHWAYS YEARS 9 - 12
This is the final phase of education at Hillcrest. Students are guided through the art of goal-setting, and meeting the higher expectations of independence, responsibility, self-motivation, and self-discipline.
The College provides students options to follow their desired pathway. This flexibility fosters personal interests and strengths, and combined with staff support, provides the necessary road map to drive students towards their future goals.

Each phase of learning is underpinned by a combination of the following elements of learning with a view to help foster meaningful experiences for students:
Hillcrest connects with personal strengths to drive engagement for students to achieve academic and personal growth. By leveraging personal interests in the classroom, students fuse existing knowledge with new information to form authentic and lasting connections.
Hillcrest believes that social and emotional skills are critical to the development of a child's academic outcomes, skills for success, and mental health and wellbeing. Social and emotional skills, including resilience, self-efficacy, critical thinking, and self-regulation, have been shown to be malleable and highly predictive of success in a wide range of important life outcomes.
Hillcrest understands the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills are the responsibility of all as they form the basis of our learning in everyday life, and underpin the acquisition of more complex skills such as critical and creative thinking.
The SECRET Skills framework comprises 24 essential skills that have been identified through research as critical to driving personal growth. Comprised of six skill domains: Self-Manager, Effective Participator, Creative Thinker, Reflective Learner, Enquirer, and Team Worker. This framework is self and peer-assessed; while teachers facilitate and encourage students to achieve their goals.
Entrepreneurial skills responds to the growing need to enhance student capabilities to adapt and apply knowledge to solve problems in unique ways. The skills that are developed through this style of problem solving allow students to meet everyday challenges, and experience growth as they apply their knowledge in new ways.

Education has always played a crucial role in shaping the society we live in today. Throughout history, the way education was approached and delivered has changed drastically, reflecting the values and beliefs of the time. As we look to the future, we need to be cognisant of the next wave of technological changes that will be reflected in the education processes of the future.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming an integral part of our daily lives, and the education sector is no exception. Schools need to adapt to this shift in technology to prepare students for the future.
There are a few key changes educators can make to best adapt:
โข Introducing AI Education as part of the curriculum to ensure that students are prepared for the future. The curriculum should include topics such as machine learning, data analysis, and programming languages that support AI technology.
โข Upgrading infrastructure to effectively teach AI. Schools could benefit from upgrading to the necessary hardware and software infrastructure. Investments into high-speed internet connections, AI-powered devices such as robots, and other necessary tools would be an asset.
โข Redefining teaching and learning methods to respond to the advances AI is making. Teachers will likely need to adapt to new teaching strategies that involve technology. Schools could integrate AI into the curriculum to offer personalized learning experiences to students.
โข Developing critical thinking skills could be easier and more efficient with the help of AI. However, it is essential to teach students to think critically about the use of AI. Students should understand how AI works, its potential benefits and limitations, and its ethical implications.
โข Preparing students for the job market is evolving as a result of how AI is transforming workplaces. Students should have the necessary skills to adapt to the changing job market and the ability to work with AI technology.
The changes mentioned above will allow students to better prepare for the future, utilising AI technology to their advantage.
In addition to intellectual skills, social and emotional skills are equally essential for students' success in school and beyond.

Social and emotional skills are equally essential for students' success in school and beyond. Social and emotional skills refer to the ability to manage emotions, build relationships, and make responsible decisions. These skills are also crucial in the workplace, where individuals need to work collaboratively, communicate effectively, and adapt to changing situations. Therefore, integrating social and emotional skills into the curriculum is crucial to ensuring students' academic and personal success.

Dirk is currently focused on building national and international connections to foster a global outlook on education, whilst using technology to improve learning. Dirkโs passion is to lead communities and challenge educators to be innovative, and seek to grow the best learning environment for students.
Building global relationships with students from other countries and cultures is incredibly important for today's students. In our increasingly interconnected world, it is essential that we understand and appreciate the diverse cultures, perspectives, and experiences of people from around the globe.
It is for this reason that Hillcrest Christian College in Queensland, Australia is seeking to forge a strong connection with Jeollanamdo in Korea. We are seeking to connect minds, build bonds, and foster global relationship.
This session will focus on the first stage of building our partnership, which is two schools in Jeollanamdo partnering with Hillcrest to undertake a virtual learning journey to strengthen their literacy skills and understand each otherโs culture. This partnership will also involve a cultural journey to Australia that will provide the opportunity for an immersion program in English as well as a hands-on Australian cultural experience. This presentation will outline how the programs will work, and how innovative use of technology can make the student experience engaging, fun and focused on learning.

Michael Collins is an educator with over 35 years experience. His career has included roles such as Principal of a small school, Education Advisor โ Literacy for the Queensland Department of Education, Director of Gifted & Talented Education spanning a period of 12 years, instrumental in the design and delivery of the I Love Reading literacy program in Australian schools, Deputy Principal - Curriculum in the Junior sector of Hillcrest Christian College, and currently part of a dynamic project of both designing and delivering instruction via the Virtual Learning Community. His formal qualifications include a Diploma of Teaching, Bachelor of Education, and Certificate of Gifted Education at the University of NSW. Michael has also been involved in writing English curriculum and provided teacher training and professional development for State Government initiatives. He has delivered instruction in multiple contexts including country service areas, a foundational member of a brand-new public school, and the Independent Schoolsโ sector. Michaelโs greatest desire is to see children achieve their full potential and to equip educators with the skills necessary to inspire, instruct, encourage, and mentor students to become productive citizens and lifelong learners.
The I Love Reading Program was designed to develop young people who can read to learn, build skills for their future, and lead with integrity and purpose to shape a better world for all humankind. This presentation will explore the fundamentals of The Program, and introduce some practical tips for teaching English and developing literacy skills. This session will also discuss the practical application of the skills and pedagogy used to accelerate English acquisition, introduce some of the purpose built Phonetic Code sounds, and illustrate how The Program teaches in real-time.
Audiences will have the opportunity to learn and perform a famous Australian phrase: "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, Oi, Oi!"

The Love Reading is a unique literacy program designed to facilitate the rapid learning of reading English. This program takes the complexity out of the English language and makes decoding words easier and faster by helping early learners to grasp the English language from a young age.
The Program takes the English Phonetic Code and packages it into a practical and easily understood resource for literacy development.
Through The Program, students quickly move from 'Learning to Read' to 'Reading to Learn'. The rate of learning increases and the learning environment becomes a place of engaged students exploring educational concepts, skills, and ideas - years ahead of their expected levels.
We have developed a number of frameworks to support schools (including early learning), educators, parents, and tutors:
Schools
Educators implementing The Program into their learning spaces.
Early Childhood educators who have the opportunity to expose children to reading concepts through play.
Parents
Parents who wish to encourage and support their child on the journey of learning to read.
Tutors and Other Educators
Tutors who teach individual or small groups of students including those learning English as a second language.

The English Language has numerous and conflicting rules for reading and spelling. The Program uses a unique colour and number system to identify the key phonetic sounds in the English language. Comprising 22 vowel sounds, 18 consonant sounds, and 7 digraph sounds, The Program uses a system of universally recognised colours and numbers, to allow every English sound and word to be 'read'.
The Program involves short, sharp sessions of intentional teaching of skills to facilitate the reading process. This approach gives increased opportunities for creativity, open ended investigation and student-driven learning. The Program helps develop a learning environment which fosters effective communication and encourages children to be confident and involved learners.
The Program is leading a new learning paradigm which challenges the slow transition of school systems from the archaic industrial model to the 21st Century digitally enabled learning environment.
Both individual student and classroom results show that the rate of learning English using The Program is significantly higher than conventional methods or programs. By the end of their first year of learning to read, students have generally progressed one and a half, to two years ahead in their literacy understanding.
The Program is a fun, innovative and practical tool, which parents and teachers can learn quickly and implement with confidence.

Our Virtual Learning Community (VLC) offers a flexible, innovative, and personalised alternative to mainstream education. Students in the Junior, Middle and Senior years of schooling are able to engage in daily online classes and virtual Help Desk tutorials with dedicated teachers, while also completing independent learning tasks in flexible learning time across the week. Embedding the Australian Curriculum into real-word, integrated projects, the VLC aims to equip students with the skills and competencies to thrive in an ever-changing world, built on strong foundations in literacy and numeracy.
There are many reasons families choose to engage in a virtual learning program. Students who are competing at elite levels of sport often canโt commit to full-time attendance at a school campus, and need to be able to access their learning while they are on the move. Some families want to embark on interstate or international travel, and want continuity of a learning program for their children while they are away from home. The VLC provides ongoing education options for families, wherever they are, whenever they need access.
Every student in the VLC has their own story, and as such, each student has an Individual Learning Plan. Whether students need consolidation of foundational knowledge, adjustments to their learning program due to diagnosed needs, acceleration and expansion of content due to giftedness, or short-term modifications due to personal circumstances, VLC teachers work with each family to develop a plan that puts each child at the centre of their learning journey.
Daily online Life Group classes provides teachers and students with a regular touch point to focus on wellbeing, social-emotional skill development, relationship building, and service opportunities. With full access to our College counsellors, chaplaincy team and Wellbeing Hub, the VLC goes well beyond academics to provide an educational experience that supports the whole child.

The Rise Program is a strategic transition program for Year 9 students that aims to empower them with a better understanding of themselves, and their community. Based in Coolangatta on the Gold Coast, the Rise Program focuses on personal growth, service to the community, and the development of entrepreneurial thinking. Ultimately, the Rise Program prepares students for success by equipping them with the skills and mindset they need to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Research shows that young adolescents undergo significant cognitive and emotional changes as they move out of the Middle Years, and the education system needs to be responsive to these changes. Furthermore, this age group is at a crucial stage in their learning and it is important that they receive an education that is engaging, relevant and challenging to ensure they are motivated to continue as life-long learners in our ever-changing world.
The world is becoming increasingly interconnected and globalised, and the education system needs to reflect this by providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a global context. This includes developing entrepreneurial skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills, as well as providing them with a broad understanding of different cultures and perspectives.
