f you’re looking for a place to lay your head that is a little off the beaten path, environmentally conscious, and has a vibe all its own, check out Wimberley’s newest boutique hotel, Flora and Fauna. Opened in 2014 by husband and wife team, Albert Valera and Trish Tang, Hotel Flora and Fauna offers 12 studio rooms designed to be your “home away from home.” While it could have been more cost effective to tear down the original structure located on the property, Albert and Trish rehabilitated the building, working around it to preserve the original foundation and structure and minimizing the impact of waste. Albert explains, “We basically took that structure and engineered, designed, and remodeled it into what you see today.” He laughs and adds, “It would have been easier to rebuild from scratch.” During the build, the couple went out of their way to preserve the original oaks in the parking lot and courtyard, adding to the charm of the property today. Albert explains, “We’re environmentally conscious. We’re actually very much a green building, and that was by design.” Hotel Flora and Fauna features retro decor with local art. This setting provides a fun, “Austin” vibe in a tranquil Wimberley setting. “Each suite has its own kitchenette area that is fully tricked out with dishes, wine glasses, coffee maker, teapot, refrigerator, microwave, and a dining area,” says Albert. Each room also offers a private entertainment area that features a record player with retro albums, not to mention the in-room 40” flat screen TV with more than 150 HD channels, free HBO and Movies on Demand, and complimentary high speed Wi-Fi. For the ultimate relaxation experience, guests find a king-size memory foam bed with 400-thread count cotton sheets, as well as a sleeper sofa.
