THE HONOR IS MINE… As I pen my last

Business Advocate column as the Chair of the Board for the Hillsboro Chamber, I am struck by what a meaningful experience it has been to serve in this role for the last two years. Thank you for the opportunity Sarah to lead this great McGraw-Plaster organization and thank you for all you do to support the Chamber as well as the Hillsboro community. Your gifts are truly appreciated. As I reflect on our time together, we have a lot to celebrate and have accomplished some amazing things. I want to thank the Directors of the Chamber who walked with me on this journey and supported me as Chair. This is work can never be accomplished alone and their vision and courage were instrumental in moving so many great ideas and aspirations across the finish line. I also want to thank and recognize the staff of the Hillsboro Chamber. What a wonderful group of professionals who have an unending passion for Hillsboro and the businesses located here. I’m sure my fellow Directors would echo my praise. As volunteers, we rely heavily on the Chamber staff to provide a foundation for us to get great things done. I’m excited and very satisfied to look back at our accomplishments over the past two years. Here are just a few of the things we got done together: Launch and opening of HillHub, Hillsboro’s co-working entrepreneurial center adjacent to the Chamber. Word is getting out and the space is filling up. Currently, all three private office spaces have been leased for a year! Our network is expanding! More and more entrepreneurs are discovering that HillHub is a great place and space to grow a business in Hillsboro. In June, the Chamber sponsored Lateral Labs CEO & Founder Justin Harlow. The focus of the event was learning a new way to solve a persistent community problem.

We took this opportunity to spotlight Downtown Hillsboro and looked at a variety of ways revitalization efforts could create sustainable business presence and amplified prosperity. Out of that endeavor grew a new partnership, Hillsboro Downtown Together, bringing the Hillsboro Chamber, Hillsboro Downtown Partnership and the City of Hillsboro together to look at initiatives we could accomplish together. One motivated Downtown Hillsboro volunteer, Kipperlyn Sinclair, lead the effort to launch the Wishing Tree in Downtown Hillsboro. The Wishing Tree, located on the corner of Main Street and 2nd Street, was the center of attention through the month of October. Wishes were placed on the tree by community members and school children. The Wishing Tree gave rise to a new sense of hope and caring throughout our community. The Chamber was actively engaged in the 2019 Legislative Session providing information to our members, testimony on a variety of business issues and held our Chamber Day at the Capital. While we weren’t always successful in achieving the outcome we had hoped for, it was important that the Public Policy Committee had a significant role to play in staying abreast of fast-moving legislation and engaged in the interesting political dynamics that were a part of the Legislative Session. I know we were all glad to see the gavel fall marking the end of a session that will have a lasting impact on the business community. Finally, I truly enjoyed being a part of the planning for the Hillsboro Chamber’s 125th Anniversary Celebration next year. What a significant milestone we will have achieved. It’s with great pride and pleasure that I turn over the reins of this great organization to Jayne Bond, President & Owner, Permapost. I know Jayne will lead with thoughtfulness, integrity and with a strong heart for the Hillsboro community. Thank you for this very special opportunity, for your support and encouragement and for your continual investment in the Hillsboro Chamber, the business voice for Hillsboro.

AN EXPRESSION OF THANKS AND APPRECIATION I

want to take a moment during the busy holiday bustle to thank all of our members for their support and investment in our work all year long. It’s easy to get swept away in the day-today rush and push of Deanna Palm priorities and forget to express our sincere appreciation for all you do for the Hillsboro Chamber and our community. I also want to personally thank and recognize the work of our Board Chair, Sarah McGraw-Plaster, over the two years she has served at the helm of this organization. Leadership for an organization like the Hillsboro Chamber is a big commitment. Not only do you serve as chair during Board of Director meetings, you also are the official spokesperson for the Chamber. As such, you need to stay abreast of our policies and positions and committee work and initiatives. It’s also traditional to have the Chair of the Board attend our signature events, introduce important guests and recognize elected officials in attendance. Whew!! It’s a lot! We changed the term of our Board Chair from one year to two years a few years back. The primary reason for the change was due to the immense amount of information our Board Chairs needed to grasp and it seemed unfair to expect them to get up to speed and then only serve for twelve months. We have greatly benefited from the change. Our Board Chairs are clear and passionate about the Chamber’s positions on important issues and can eloquently articulate our rationale. So, as you can understand, Sarah’s leadership in this role for the past two

years was instrumental in amplifying the Chamber’s influence with elected officials, policy makers and stakeholders. The tireless dedication she demonstrated during her tenure was impressive to say the least. I am truly grateful that effective leaders are interested and willing to share their gifts with the Hillsboro Chamber. I have also been very blessed to have wonderful Board members who have served this organization with courage, intellect and integrity. We have two Directors who will be stepping down from the Board this year; John Grimshaw with Applied Materials and Marc Cardinaux with Building Materials Specialties. Both dedicated Board members have served on the Board for six years lending their ingenuity, business acumen and expertise. My heartfelt appreciation for their service and the most invaluable gift of time. Truly grateful! Finally, Bob Grover with Pacific Landscape Management, served in the capacity of Board Chair for 2016 & 2017. Bob has served for the past two years in the capacity of Past Chair. The role of Past Chair might seem ceremonial but truly provides a great resource for our incoming Board Chairs. Questions come up about process, procedures and the like. It’s comforting to have someone who has walked that path be there to provide guidance and perspective. I will miss having Bob, John and Marc around our table. I try never to take for granted the wealth of experience these individuals bring to our organization. And, after serving with them for at least six years, they are also my friends. Thank you for your leadership and the care and oversight you provided to the Hillsboro Chamber. Wishing you all a very happy, fulfilling, safe and loving Holiday!

LATINX BUSINESS COMMUNITY REFLECTIONS

As we come to the year’s end it’s a time to reflect on

our work within the Latinx business community. The outreach is extensive, and we continue to work on everything and anything to support the largest growing demographic within our city of Hillsboro. This year we worked to encourage participation of others within our community with deep history and expertise about the community. We learned that working collaboratively we were able to effectively connect with those doing business in Hillsboro. Working across professions and businesses lead to many ideas’ worth implementing, which was changed the some of the work our Latinx

Business Outreach Manager, Nansi Lopez. Ms. Lopez has led the charge in the work needed for the Latinx business community with great tenacity and passion. Most recently the Mission Statement was changed to include the words; Inclusive and Equity. “Se Habla Español” signs have been added to the office. The sponsorship opportunities for 2020 include an array of ways to support new workshops and programs. We have area for improvement, and we will continue to diligently work on making Hillsboro a place to do business for everyone, especially the communities of color who need extra support. We’re here and will deliver the services needed.

After an overview of the beginnings of Hillsboro

and a walk through historical downtown with guides and the Washington County Historical Society, the Leadership group class headed out to Jackson Bottom Wetlands for the environmental portion of the day including bird watching and identification to learning more about Clean Water Services. Always a highlight on History, Environment and Agriculture Day is a trip to Eshraghi Nursery where the class was amazed at the beautiful Christmas art being created by the employees there. Such a great day for getting just a small taste of the historical roots of our community!
