INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES Current Courses City College, M.S. Sustainability in the Urban Environment; Spitzer School of Architecture SUS 7100C Cities and Sustainability: introduction to urban ecology Core Lecture Course: In “Cities and Sustainability,” I introduce theories of urban ecology as the interaction of diverse built and natural systems affecting urban morphology and regulating the urban “metabolism” (flows of matter and energy). Sustainability metrics for global cities are critically examined.

SUS 7400A Case Studies in Sustainability: Integrated Infrastructures Seminar: “Integrated Infrastructure” deepens the inquiry into the nature of urban systems, focusing on Current Courses City College, M.S. Sustainability in the Urban Environment; Spitzer School of Architecture socio-technical regimes of energy, water, waste, transport and sanitation. The dynamics of urban metabolism are explored, emphasizing the means to achieving states of “sufficiency.” Simultaneously, the co-productions of public services are understood through the metaphor of “infrastructural ecology,” a systems perspective that examines cross-sector linkages among critical services that help to close resource and energy loops and optimize synergies. ARCHITECTURAL STUDIO TEACHING ARCH 51000 – Advanced Design Studio This studio explores two interrelated challenges regarding sustainable urban infrastructure: first, ways to reduce the sizeable ecological footprints of our critical services—our energy, transit, water, and sanitation operations, and second, the capacity of architectural design, with its sensitivity to environmental, social, and political context, to beneficially integrate these large technical facilities into the fabric of neighborhoods and the broader cultural landscape.
