WELCOME TO HILD BEDE!

1

Hello Freshers! Welcome to the best years of your life. First of all, I’d like to say a huge congratulations on getting into University, and to the best College in Durham. I could talk for an uncomfortable amount of time about our beautiful 16 acres, our facilities which other Colleges fight for, and our unrivalled sense of loyalty and community.. but pretty soon you’ll find all that out for yourself. I am writing to you as the President of the Student Representative Council (SRC), which simply means the head of the student body - the SRC - a.k.a you guys. There are very few things that I’m not involved in with College: representing you all on countless committees (from catering to management), managing the student finances, planning our amazing events, balls, formals, attending events etc. If there’s something going on in College that I don’t know about, it’s probably a surprise party for me… so I look forward to that... Talk to me about anything College related, or just if you fancy a chat, introduce yourself- I love meeting new people (otherwise, why would I run for President?) I head a team of Student Executives (“The Exec”): who pretty much devote a year of their life to improving the College experience and making sure your time here is fulfilling, productive and fun! You can find their beautiful faces on page 8, and make sure you say hello to them in induction week, as they’re a fantastic group of people. Joining us in induction week are a team of 14 Freshers’ Reps (“The Freps”), a crazy bunch who’ll do a fantastic job of helping you settle in. If you have any questions or want to make some friends other than people in your year, we’re the guys to chat to -we bleed Hild Bede. Coming to a Collegiate University is an incredibly unique experience, and by the time you graduate you won’t be able to imagine going anywhere else. Hild Beders develop an unrivalled sense of College spirit, community and loyalty whilst here. Hild Bede pushes your comfort zone and encourages a “can do” attitude; a great approach to the big wide world . Our College motto describes my (and I hope your) experience perfectly - Though changed, I arise the same - you arrive here as an amazingly talented individual, and leave as an amazingly talented individual with enhanced life experience having embraced all of the countless opportunities that Durham throws at you. If, however, you find the experience a little overwhelming (and you definitely won’t be alone), there are many people on-hand with your welfare at heart, myself included. If you have any questions before arrival or when you’re here, you can call, email or come and chat to me and I’ll be happy to listen. The Frep and Exec (Frepxec) team, myself and the College Staff will be on hand all week to make sure you’re doing okay. Congratulations once more on your acceptance to Durham and have a great summer - you’ve earned it! I’ll be here at Hild Bede all summer waiting to meet you all and I couldn’t be more excited for September. A wise group of men from the 80s/90s once told me to “never forget” and I promise that you won’t forget your time here, from the moment you arrive. Welcome to the family. Yours,

Kirsty McLaren Hild Bede SRC President College of St Hild and St Bede SRC Office: 0191 334 8514

“I applied to Hild Bede because it’s the largest College and statistically I would have a higher chance of making friends… it turned out to be one of the most intimate places on earth” - Anonymous Hild Bede Graduate.

FROM US TO YOU

2

A Welcome from the Principal First of all may I congratulate you on achieving your magnificent results and, hence, on your joining this great College of St Hild and St Bede. I offer you the warmest welcome to Durham University and to the College. You are joining one of the oldest Colleges of the University and in 2016 we will be celebrating our rich history of the last 175 years. Many famous and influential people have studied here before you and Hild Bede alumni are well represented in all walks of life, in all countries and on all continents. Rumour (that is, Wikipedia) has it that even the erstwhile James Bond, Roger Moore, is a Hild Bede alumnus. Our College is named after Hild – described as the greatest teacher and administrator of her day – and Bede – described as the greatest historian and scholar of his day. Who knows which of the 2014 intake will, in their own way, make a lasting and influential mark on society as did those after whom our great College is named. Whatever you accomplish as a result of being here I know you will grow intellectually and, following the Hild Bede tradition of filling all your waking hours productively, I am confident that you will achieve your full potential. By coming to Durham University you have signed up to an Institution that expects you to succeed in your chosen degree and at the same wants to encourage you to get involved in a range of extra curricula activities, whether they be sporting, the performing arts, leading in the organisation of student events, volunteering etc. You will find a fantastic group of students to help you find your feet. Led by our sabbatical President Kirsty and supported by her executive, they will encourage you to join in and engage with our clubs and societies, our sport, our society in general and they will certainly want you to sign up for formal dinners. Formal dinners are a highlight of Hild Bede. We don’t normally wear gowns, and our Formals are themed; our dress code is black tie/smart dress. At the dinners you will enjoy a fellowship of the table and be able to meet members of our Senior Common Room. You will also be treated to the best cuisine and service in Durham in a dining rooms with one of the best views within the city. Finally, I would like to introduce you to the management team of Laura (Vice Principal), Chris (Bursar), Joanne (Operations Manager), Elaine (Student Support Officer) and the College office staff, Julie, Anne, Bonnie and Joanne. We are all here to help you succeed. Make sure to get to know all our staff, those who work in reception, in the kitchen and the dining room, the housekeepers and the porters. We are all here to ensure you really enjoy your years in Durham. We won’t be teaching you anything in your curriculum, that happens within your Departments, but as part of our scholarly and caring College community you will gain some invaluable and transferable life skills of teamwork, management and leadership. We are also here to make sure that everything goes smoothly for you and that you get the most out of your College and University experience. You have done a lot to get here, and I know you will now make the very most of all the opportunities available to you within the College and University. You have innumerable opportunities as a student, and with them comes a raft of responsibilities – to yourselves and to the College and the University. I know you will respect your rights and responsibilities. It is important to all of us that you enjoy being and are proud to be a Hild Beder and that we are proud of you as a Hild Beder!

A Welcome from the Post Graduate President A very warm welcome to those of you joining Hild-Bede, especially as a postgraduate student. You're now a member of one of the most prestigious intellectual communities in the world and a diverse and dynamic environment in which to live. Postgraduate students in college are researching a myriad of topics, including climate change, microscopic needles, early modern home medicine, medical ethics, and the laws behind world constitutions. In the past year, researchers presented at numerous international conferences (in places like Norway, Austria, and the U.S.), published several papers, and spoke at our award-winning colloquia. We have more postgraduates at Hild-Bede than any other mixed college and from more places on earth than anywhere else at Durham. With a lot of time in the lab, hunched over a computer, or out doing fieldwork, even the most serious researcher will need time to relax, and Hild-Bede has wide-ranging opportunities, with more clubs than any other college, and one of the best sport programmes at Durham. All are easy to get involved in, usually with minimal time commitment, so just ask if you want to try your hand at something (or if you're an expert already). Plus, it's a good chance to meet other members of college, even undergraduates, who are nicer than you may be led to believe! I'll do my best to help you fit in, acculturate, and get involved, something I've done a lot of myself. I play hockey and badminton for college, along with being Tennis B Team Captain. I'm an avid member of Durham City AFC Supporters Club (and DCAFC club photographer) and Christian Union, and you'll have no trouble spotting me if you have a question—I'm the one with the camera. So don't be shy, come say hello, and I'll do my best to help you have the best time in college as possible. Whether you do or not, you'll be hearing a lot from me and from the Postgraduate Committee about events and opportunities over the year. Best wishes and stay in touch, Gabriel

THE COLLEGE

Academic support and personal welfare While teaching takes place within the academic departments, the College plays an essential role in the administration and support of the academic work within the university. The greatest virtue of the collegiate system is the extensive network of support for anybody who faces problems, be they emotional, financial, academic or health related. For various reasons things may go wrong, but if they do then there are a number of people to contact whose main purpose is to help you. Kirsty McLaren, the SRC President, is an obvious person to talk to about any problems you have or if you are concerned about any of the students around you. Everything you say to her will be treated in the strictest of confidence and as she lives in college (the President’s flat is located above Reception) she is available all day throughout the year. The SRC also has 2 dedicated Welfare Campaigns Officers, who this year are Anoushka Twining and James McRedmond. They are students themselves, very approachable (love giving hugs!) and will help as much as possible; their job is your welfare! They also live in College and can be found in the Welfare Office (just behind reception) every Sunday and often at other times.. A number of college staff are also available to speak to if problems arise. You are encouraged to speak to Ms Laura Todd, our Vice Principal, who has her own office next to the College Office, and is available to advise students on any matter whatsoever. In the College Office are Mrs Julie Blake, Mrs Anne Franklin, Mrs Joanne Thirlaway and Mrs Bonny Bainbridge, and you will find that these people are the first port of call for all matters relating to your student life (such as course registration, exam concessions, student loans, reporting illness, and obtaining hardship forms). Also on hand is Elaine Franklin, who is the colleges Student Support officer. You must also feel free to contact Professor Adrian Darnell, our Principal, about any query or anxiety you may have. Remember that the College, the College Officers and staff are there to help students. You will also be assigned a College mentor who will make themselves available should you need any help or advice; there is more information about them later on in the handbook. We are confident that amongst this group of people you will find someone with whom you feel comfortable enough to talk to and ensure that your time in Hild Bede is as enjoyable as possible. If you have any questions or comments concerning welfare before you arrive at Durham then please contact Kirsty McLaren, the SRC President.

COLLEGE and SRC

“What’s the difference?” - they are separate bodies!

THE COLLEGE The college is the institution you belong to, and what you are affiliated with through the University. In a physical sense, the College staff and management provide welfare support, academic support, personal development, career development and provide your accommodation and food.

THE SRC

The SRC is the Student Representative Council. Who’s that? YOU! Every single student at Hild Bede is a member of the SRC because they pay their levy - and it is compulsory for every student to attend the bi-termly meetings. The SRC exists to enrich your student experience beyond academics, accommodation and food. The SRC is a democratic student body, and is your vehicle for representation and expressing your opinion. Included in the SRC is the SRC Executive Committee (SRC Exec) who do a number of things (see page 8), but mostly they organise your social and sporting calendar amongst many other things. It’s not just the SRC Exec who make things happen, if there’s something you want to do, chat to us and we’ll help you do it! n most colleges they have a Junior Common Room (JCR) but here we have the SRC. Just remember that the SRC is made up of all Hild Bede students.

“What’s the Exec?” - Executive student committee of the SRC

THE SRC LEVY Your £40 per academic year gets you… 1) Representation on SRC, College and University levels 2) Subsidisation of all events in College organised by the SRC Summer and Winter Ball Induction Week Formals College Day Hild Bedestock (Beer + Music Festival) Regular Bar Events/Acoustic Nights/Parties 3) 1 Full-Time SRC President See the President’s description for what the SRC President is paid to do 4) All SRC Equipment and Facilities Sports Courts Tech equipment Grants for our Clubs and Societies The Vernon Arms Bar

THE SRC OFFICE Situated in Hild Reception. Exec members you’re likely to find here: Kirsty McLaren - SRC President Kishen Vora - Deputy President Gabriel Fidler - Postgraduate President Josh Wood - Treasurer

You’ll most likely visit here to drop a cheque off, but we’d love you to come in for a chat!

The Exec!

8

Though the college does most of the serious behind the scenes work, it is the SRC Executive Committee (The Exec) who deal with much of the student aspects of life at Hild Bede. Heading the Exec is a Hild Bede Graduate who works for one year on behalf of the student body as the Sabbatical President. The other 13 Exec members work in various capacities alongside the President and in addition to the Exec are a number of non-executive positions (See the diagram on the previous page). In your first year you will see a lot of the Exec as they are generally involved in almost everything going on in college. The roles of the SRC are a lot of fun and a chance to try your hand at organising and managing events and people, a skill of invaluable measure with regards to graduate employment, so if anything looks enjoyable just ask that person about getting involved it could be you writing this Handbook in 3 years time! The Exec and the Ball Committee - Summer Ball 2014

name: KIRSTY McLAREN. position: SRC PRESIDENT It was love at first sight for Kirsty and Hild Bede when they first met in 2011. Since then, she has graduated with a Psychology Degree after diving head first into all things Hild Bede. Kirsty’s road to becoming the head of the SRC has seen her acting/directing in 3 HBT plays, becoming the Social Secretary and Club Captain for HBWAFC Mooses, organising charity events for DUCK, being an Open Day Rep (twice), failing at Basketball, Ball prep, helping the bar with drinking and being a Team Leader and spending a year on the Exec in her third year as the Livers-Out and Publicity Officer. Kirsty received Honorary Life Membership of the SRC in 2014 and proudly took the Yearbook title of “Mrs Hild Bede” and “Comedy Queen”, rounding off her time as an Undergraduate, ready to be a full-time employee as the President… you’ll struggle to find someone who loves this College more than her! Kirsty is now on hand to all students almost 24 hours a day to ensure smooth running of the SRC: its finances, its societies and its fantastic events and most importantly, its students. Kirsty represents you on a College and University-wide level and always has your best interests at heart. Kirsty cannot wait to meet you all in Induction Week, which she will be organising over the summer along with the Head Fresher’s Rep. Kirsty will spend most of her days in the SRC Office, so pop in to keep her company, she is incredibly friendly and looks forward to chatting to you all in Induction Week (good luck trying to get away), so never be afraid to approach her for a chat about anything, especially Harry Potter. Kirsty hopes you’re ready for an unforgettable week, and an even more enjoyable first year at Hild Bede. She is incredibly excited to be sharing the best year of your life with you, and making some great friends.

THE SRC EXEC

9

name: KISHEN VORA position: DEPUTY PRESIDENT London born and raised, Kishen finds the North-East a very cold and scary place. He is a third year philosophy student and is your Deputy President this year. As such, he represents the students on all college committees and helps out Kirsty whenever she needs. Having organised two balls last year as Ball Officer and College Day 2014, he now organises the college formals, which happen every two weeks and are a great laugh. Part of Hild Bede Theatre’s Exec last year, Kishen is a keen actor. For college, he also plays hockey and captains a pool team, so you’ll see him playing in the Vern with Frep Dan “Geezer” Barcroft. Passionate about sports, he is a qualified football coach and coaches the women’s football team, The Mooses. Living in the college’s Deputy Room, you’ll see Kishen around so don’t be afraid to stop and have a chat, and he’ll be happy to help you with whatever problems you might have.

Name: GABRIEL FIDLER Position: POSTGRADUATE PRESIDENT Gabriel swears that one day, he'll stop going to university, but this is not that day, and Hild-Bede is not the place for that to happen. Equally as likely to summon members of TTR Club with a blast from a dame conch as to be found in Klute or on the pitch/court/field (he'll be the one looking clueless/terrified), he occasionally finds time to do research on medieval architecture (which, fortunately, does not involve putting down his camera). Ask him about anything (except the Stone of Bede): everyone assumes he's been here for many more years than his one, and he can help you with hockey, tennis, badminton,DCSC, American Sports, Lego LOTR assembly and much more...

Name: JOSH WOOD Position: TREASURER Josh is ’the denchest’ third year Astrophysicist who has embarrassingly never seen The Big Bang Theory, though the rest of the Exec agreed that he would probably be Howard. Josh is easily recognisable due to his space themed bag which, according to him would be one of the three things he would save in a fire, along with whatever vodka is around and probably the cat. As the college Treasurer Josh is responsible for the managing both the SRC’s money and Hild Bede Treasury, his treasury website which he dearly loves. He can often be found in the SRC office carrying out treasury work or staring endlessly at said work. While at Hild Bede he participated in football and rowing, last year he stepped out of retirement to help row after a night out and ended up falling out the boat into the river. Over summer Josh also visited CERN and to get a picture with the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) detector. Feel free to ask him any physics questions, both course and non-course related to keep him on his toes.

THE SRC EXEC

10

name: ANOUSHKA TWINING position: FEMALE WELFARE OFFICER If you’re feeling a little down, want to talk about something private or just fancy a nice cuppa and a chat, Anoushka is your girl! As your Female Welfare Officer Anoushka will be looking out for your best interests and keeping you happy so you can enjoy all the great things Hild Bede has to offer. When she’s not in the Welfare Office serving up tea and cake she is balancing her time between a criminology degree, running welfare campaigns in college, Hild Bede Cheerleading and will soon be joining the renowned Hild Bede Mooses. Living in college Anoushka will be a regular (for the second year running) in the Vern and will be sure not to miss any of its notorious parties. Anoushka is here for you along with her and James’ fantastic welfare team, so whatever’s on your mind make sure you let her know, with a can do attitude and a smile there’s no problem too big or small that she won’t help you solve!

name: JAMES McREDMOND position: MALE WELFARE OFFICER James is a 4th year mathematician and a keen Ultimate Frisbee player who when not in Durham lives on the Wirral (near Liverpool). But it's not all bad! A friendly face around college, always happy to chat especially if it comes with a pint in the Vernon Arms, he is your Male Welfare Officer for the year. When not playing poker or baking cakes he is often found working with Anoushka and his fantastic welfare committee to raise awareness of a variety of topics around college and to make sure you all have a happy, healthy and safe. time at Hild Bede

name: ED RINGE position: CHAIRPERSON Ed likes nothing better than spending the morning mixing white powders in his latex gloves, the afternoon coaching fellow students on how to play with their balls and stick in 11 different positions, and the evening rigging elections or writing hidden jokes into the constitution. In other words talk to Ed about Chemistry, College Hockey and anything to do with the SRC and its Exec. Always around college, Ed can’t wait to welcome you all to the best college in Durham so come and find him anytime - he will be the ginger in a red top standing next to/ inside the speakers in one of Durham’s many many many night clubs.

name: MIRIAM GOTT position: BALL OFFICER Hailing, unashamedly, from north of the Watford Gap, life in the Yorkshire Dales has fully prepared Miriam for the Arctic Circle that is Durham City. Measuring in at 5ft 3”, Miriam is rarely seen wearing anything but a trusty pair of heels – even when she’s cycling around town – so watch out! Occasionally studying for her Masters of Biomedicine, Miriam is usually spotted coxing or rowing along the Wear, playing college netball and football (albeit very badly), or leading a team of friendly faces behind the bar, so say hello when you come down for a tipple! Miriam’s greatest love of all, however, is balls. She just can’t get enough of them, and who can blame her? The biggest events on the Hild Bede calendar, the Winter and Summer Balls are the highlight of the year for every student; with Scouting for Girls and Vengaboys headlining last Summer, Miriam can’t wait to take the reins organising for the coming year.

THE SRC EXEC

11

name: SARAH HUNTER. position: SOCIAL SECRETARY Sarah (Saz) is a second year Law student from Northern Ireland, but her real passion lies in planning Hild Bede events as the college Social Secretary. She organises the weekly Bar Quiz, live music nights in the Vern, the annual Halloween and Christmas parties and many more events. When she’s not studying Law or party planning Sarah is also International Officer for the mighty Durham City Supporters Club and loves cheerleading for Hild Bede Cheer or doing a spot of rowing on the river. And she can often be found in the Vern or one of Durham’s nightclubs (Klute is definitely her favourite) with a vodka coke. Come and have a chat about Law, college events, or anything else; she can talk for Ireland, literally though the accent does get a lot worse when she’s been home for summer. If you want to get involved in any events, whether as a musician or helping to organise, get touch! She’s really looking forward to this year, and throwing some great events to help make your first year at Hild Bede unforgettable!

in

name: ARCHIE MURDOCH position: CLUBS AND SOCS OFFICER It is well known that Hild Bede has the finest students in Durham (many would say the best in the world), but it is still staggering how talented we all are. As well as having academic superiority, Hild Bede can boast of having the best theatre group, boat club and rugby club out of all the colleges, and our other clubs and societies aren’t far behind. Archie therefore holds the enviable role of coordinating all these top ‘clubs and socs’ (you will need to get used to the Hild Bede lingo!), as well as helping to set up new ones. Taking a degree in languages has allowed Archie to experience college life to the full, which basically means he spends his time in the Vern watching sport. He plays for a variety of college sports teams, starred in the Freshers’ Play, and runs the hottest club of them all: Hild Bede Table Football Club. For any queries about all that is Hild Bede, or if you just want to speak to someone (meeting new people can be hard!) then he is always available for a chat about anything.

name: ROBYN MORLEY

position: LIVERS-OUT AND PUBLICITY OFFICER

Robyn is a second year economics student and is your go-to person if you need help sorting out your accommodation in Durham post-first year. As a Hild Bede fresher, Robyn discovered three new passions: rowing, ‘gains’ (or in layman’s terms, frequenting Hild Bede’s gym), and making her treasured publicity posters for Hild Bede’s brilliant events (seriously, she loves posters). Aside from these pursuits she is also an avid musician, playing the viola in the university’s symphony orchestra as well as singing with her trademark blue guitar, with which she likes to serenade Hild Bede students in The Vern. Robyn’s ambition is to visit every teashop in Durham before she graduates, so if you can’t find her in college for a chat she will almost certainly be sat up a cobbled street scoffing a slice of chocolate cake!

THE SRC EXEC

12

name: MILENA CASEY. position: INTERNATIONAL OFFICER Milena is a second year Biologist and your International Officer this year. Having spent her first year adapting to a diet consisting almost exclusively of potatoes, an outdoor temperature far below the world average, the infamous British drinking culture and learning to use words like 'cheers' and 'banter', she now feels qualified to prepare future international Hild Beders for the wonders and horrors of British student life. Should you have any worries, questions, suggestions, funny or shocking stories about your efforts adapting to life in the UK, direct them to her! She's the tiny pale blonde one, most likely running because she's late for something, explaining her complicated origins, or defending anything Belgian - a country she wishes she had any relevant link to. Her strongest desire (apart from starting a band with her twin sister called "The Clones") is that all future international students of Hild Bede have as unforgettable a time here as she.

name: ANNA REID. position: ENVIRONMENT OFFICER Anna is your environment officer. She has a passion for tree hugging, vegan related, garden loving activities and an ambition to singlehandedly save the world from the woes of Global Warming. In her spare time, she also does a philosophy degree (although her lecture attendance rate from last year might suggest otherwise), as well as trying (but failing) to shoot lots of goals for the Hild Bede netball team. Anna is also a closet Northerner. Whilst she has received much abuse for this throughout the year, she would like to remind everyone that Hull is actually the Capital of Culture 2017 (a grand honour) and therefore requests that the Southerners please refrain themselves from abuse in the future. If you ever need any help with anything, Anna's your woman. Do stop her to say hi (especially if you have any environment related ideas!)

name: MEG FOSTER position: SENIOR STUDENTS’ UNION REP Hild Bede’s resident Prestonian lass, Meg, is a second year psychology student and this year’s Student Union Rep. In her role as SU Rep, Meg represents Hild Bede to the Durham Students’ Union while attending lots of meetings and voting on a variety of ‘stuff’ on behalf of the college. So if you want to get involved in student politics or find out what the Union can do for you, give her a shout. Aside from studies and the Union, Meg plays netball for Hild Bede 4’s (a team which didn’t win a single game last year) and is a proud Exec member of Durham City Supporters Club - 'Keep the Faith'. Meg is easily recognisable by her hoop earrings, worn religiously everyday, and is known for her talent of distracting others from their studies. True to her Northern roots, Meg loves watching Coronation Street and enjoys a proper good brew, but is always keen to ditch Corrie and a cuppa for Klute and a quaddie.

The Freps!

13

Alongside the Exec, every college finds a group of friendly, energetic and slightly crazy individuals to help ease you all into our way of life here at Durham! Here at Hild Bede we test their ‘Frepability’ through a grueling stage based election process, in which the candidates danced, joked and mimed their way to one of the most coveted positions within the SRC. Led by Mr Harry Adair (below) the Freps (Fresher Reps) will be around from the moment you arrive to get the atmosphere going, be a source of advice and make you feel at home. They’ve all been through their own Induction period so they’ve asked every question and felt every emotion that you will have upon arrival; don’t be afraid to utilize their experience. They’ll be the ones in our infamous red polo shirts!

A WELCOME FROM YOUR HEAD FREP Hello everyone! I'd like to start by saying a huge congratulations for getting yourself into Durham University and on top of that wishing you a very warm welcome to the best college around – St. Hild and St. Bede. I am your Head Frep for this year and I am so excited for you all to arrive in October. By now I'm sure you all have mixed emotions about this new chapter in your life but I can assure you that you have the most incredible bunch of people ready and waiting to help you settle in to college life, the Frep-Team! Along with your wonderful President Kirsty and the Exec-Team, we are here to make sure that you have a amazing time during Induction week and beyond (we have some pretty cool events up our sleeves). In addition we are here to answer any, literally any, questions you have regarding Hild Bede and Durham in general and will always be on hand to listen to any concerns you might have. Our college really is such a special place, from the range of clubs and societies we offer to the 'one-big-happy-family' atmosphere you feel here, and we can’t wait to welcome you. To tell you a little bit about me, I am a tall and gangly 2nd year Geography student from Newcastle (not that I sound like it) and last year in Durham I enjoyed playing squash, singing in various university groups and was involved with Hild Bede Theatre. I just hope you all enjoy first year as much as I did and I am so happy I can be a part of the team that makes it happen for you. Looking forward to meeting you all. Big Hild Bede love, Harry x

THE FREPS

14

Jo Nayler Jo Nayler is a second year history student who is notorious around college for her striking resemblance to her housemate Ray. During her first year Jo became an expert in terrible football and is currently ‘exotic fruits rep’ for the mighty Durham City Supporters Club and the captain of the somewhat less mighty HBWAFC (The Mooses). Other interests include staring vacantly into space/ at random strangers for long periods at a time, an unfortunate habit which has scared off many potential love interests for herself and her friends. She is looking forward to meeting you all and hopes that you all have a brilliant first year. James Timmins James is a second year Maths student who has also been known to dabble in physics. When not escaping the unwanted advances of his college wife, he can be found leading the Bede Butchers Rugby Team to victory, attempting to play the guitar or making #gains in the gym. One of this years more responsible freps, James has been known in the past to disappear on a night out and end up miles out of the centre of Durham in the aptly named village of Pity Me. James is looking forward to welcoming you all and would like to say that everyone is welcome to come and play FIFA round his house this year. Alex Barr Hailing from Oxford, England. weighing in at 73kg and standing at 6ft 2, Alex Barr would be a very small super heavyweight wrestler. Specialising in spreadsheets after working in Australia for a year, he will often be found pressing buttons on his laptop or attempting to pass his mathematics degree. Good at not showing up to most of the clubs he signed up for and after playing 2 rugby games this year you can see commitment is one of his strong points. Definitely one to talk to if you want to learn random phrases from other languages or want to hear an anti-joke or two. Be careful of the chiseled jaw though, can be dangerous, especially when wielded under the influence. Says he can't wait to meet you guys, but he's a shifty guy, can you trust him? Time will tell. Parisa Shirazi Parisa is quite possibly Hild Bede’s only Northern Irish-Iranian and is ecstatic to be one of your Freps this year. Although she is reading Law here, she also the Social Secretary (and liability) for Hild Women’s Rugby team, working on Pro Bono projects, and talking to everyone she sees about whatever pops into her head; this ranges from how good Earth, Wind and Fire are to obscure human rights cases (ask her about the French mayor attempting to ban dwarf tossing and she’d be delighted to tell you). There has not been a day where she has not been glad to be here and she hopes to help you all feel the same way! Ray Flavell Ray Flavell is a second year Law student, involved in such antics as claiming to be part of the illustrious Hild Bede Ladies Poker Society as an excuse for an inpromptu weekday bar crawl - an event that has previously led to not only an infiltration of Van Mildert but also hiding all their kettles in microwaves. She enjoys keeping her college husband, Sam Heaton, whipped as practise for the real deal: ruling Durham City Supporters Club with an iron fist as club president. Other interests include a nice chat over tea and cake and demanding yet another karaoke rendition of Britney Spears' Toxic from her long suffering friends. She's a happy, friendly face around college and (if you can actually tell the difference between her and Jo Nayler) you should definitely find the time to talk to her. George McNeilly George McNeilly (Mr.Bede - MBE) actor; writer; Stallion; cox; archeologist; guitarist; King of Preston - If you were asked to use 3 words to describe George, 'Really F****** Short' would spring to mind. George's main talent is 'trying hard' and his threadbare athletic ability is only overlooked by his tendency to get involved in everything but his degree. As Boat Club coPresident, Football club Treasurer, DCSC board of Directors, (Keep the Faith) Ex Exec, Disability Rep and Team Leader on the bar, George is a jack of all trades yet master of F*** all. He loves The North, blazers and gin. Approach without caution but with playful anecdotes. Ed Wheatley Ed is a second year English literature student who makes the most of his time avoiding actually reading books mainly by getting involved as Treasurer for Hild Bede Theatre. If any freshers feel that they might be budding thespians or in any way dramatically inclined he’ll be more than happy to talk about the different ways you can get involved without having to do anything ridiculous like shave your head or wax your chest... Ed also attempts to do sports by occasionally being a member of the Bede Butchers rugby team and upholding the noble and heroic pastime of ultimate Frisbee. He can often be found in the Vern steadily getting less terrible at pool and looks forward to getting to know you all and seeing you in and around college. Dan “Geezer” Barcroft The name says it all. Oliver Rake Oli is a second year economics student, from a part of southern England so rural that he’s still having some difficulty adjusting to the big city life of Durham. He can sometimes be found on the river, attempting to row, and in the evenings can often be found on either side of the bar at the Vern. He likes talking to people, so please come to him with any questions or conversation! Sam Heaton Sam is a second year English and Politics student with a penchant for the friendzone. When not pandering to the needs of his predominantly female housemates, you're likely to find him wandering Durham in a full set of pyjamas. If you ever fancy partnering the voice of an angel in any karaoke event, Sam's your man. Also welcomed are any questions relating to his native Manchester, Bovril (having been elected to the much coveted position of Bovril Rep for the Durham City Supporters Club) and even his degree in times of desperation. One of the Frepxec's resident gentle giants, Sam can't wait to meet you all. Josh Williams Hailing from close to the Arctic Circle in Cumbria, Josh easily adapted to the Durham climate, and used the local accent to improve his Modern Language skills. Hild Bede has enabled Josh to take part in many an activity that he wouldn’t normally get a chance to do - captaining the newly-formed 7th Hild Bede football team to glory(?) - sign up at your local recruitment centre NOW - rowing, and even getting to star in Pornography as part of HBT (not quite what it sounds like...). Henry Fell Henry is HBT’s Social Sec, as well as Hild Bede’s resident ginger.

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE With a name like ‘International Committee’, our job might sound self-explanatory. Here is where a lesser committee might be tempted to give you some vague answer about how our job is to ‘celebrate the diversity’ of Hild Bede, although that is still true, we don’t think that gives you a good picture of what we do from day to day. In reality, our job mostly boils down to this: You might say it includes having freshers from abroad coming to us with any issues they might have easing in into life at Durham University. This could be anything from room problems, finding out the best places for tea in Durham or simply telling us that homesickness is setting in. (Don’t worry, we’ve been there ourselves) It might also include them asking you the meanings of words used within contemporary British vocabulary, e.g. what do they really mean when they say ‘cheeky’? Or ‘banter’ for that matter? (All in due time, young one) It might also include the more serious stuff such as helping out with visas, passports and police checks. Questions regarding medical care, banks, mobile service providers all fall under our purview too. (But please, for those coming from abroad, do read the International Students’ Pamphlet, it would prevent a lot of unfortunate mistakes and wasted time) We can talk a lot about diversity (our committee consists of a Swiss-Indian, a Norwegian, a British-Bangladeshi and a Malaysian who are led by a Serbian-Belgian) or that we like meeting people from other cultures, but at the end of the day, you’re in Durham now, and it doesn’t matter where you come from, whether you’re British, Burmese, Bangladeshi or Belgian, we just want you to have a wonderful time. Again, we are the Hild Bede International Committee, if you have any queries, suggestions for improvement, casual flirtations, some richlydeserved praise or, equally-warranted insults that you’d like to throw our way, feel free to email us at HildBedeIntCom@outlook.be With all the love in the world (pun fully intended), Milena, Adrian, Ferdous, Lise and Tanika Your very lovable International Committee

LGBTCa COMMITTEE LGBTCa! (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Curious Association)

Hey everyone, we are your four lovely LGBTCa (well that was a mouthful…) reps for this year. As well as organising events, socials, and liaising with the Uni Committee, we are also clearly here to listen to, support and advise anyone who needs to have a chat or confide in us about their sexuality/identity/any other issues. Do bear in mind that we are completely confidential and all you need do is catch any one of us around college, or send us an email. We will be more than happy to hear from you. Have a great week, we will be around so come and say hi!

A bit about us… Gemma Cunliffe Hey there. I’m Gem, a finalist studying English and Spanish. Just came back from living in Madrid for a year (the european gay capital) and had an amazing time. Ready to share my recent cultural and life experiences with you all, I play and coach football, and work in the College bar. My dream is to marry Emma Watson and be a character in OITNB.

Dylan Rivers Hi I’m Dylan, a 2nd year PPEist. I can’t match the girls’ ‘OMG YEAR ABROAD’ stories, but I had a great time getting to know Durham last year, that well-known gay capital of the North-East…I play the violin, ‘cello and piano, and have been known to slip into French when drunk in Klute. Channing Tatum, if you’re reading this, you can take me out anytime (my parents wouldn’t approve, but who cares).

Belinda Dear Hi I’m Belinda, a 4th year studying French and Spanish. I just spent a year in France and Buenos Aires which holds basically the best gay night life in the world! My dream is to live in Lyon, eat cheese, play the accordion and...

Ben Blackburn Hello, I'm Ben, and I am a second year Chemistry student. I have shockingly few hobbies (unless you count the search for a hobby as a hobby), and spend the majority of my time trying to convince people to watch Breaking Bad. I swim, and my dream is to live in Sweden. Also to discover the perfect Christmas . Lots of LGBTCa love, Gemma, Dylan, Belinda and Ben! x

HOW CAN YOU GET INVOLVED IN COLLEGE? From as early as week one, we’ll be looking for people to run for Non-Executive positions, such as the Ball Committee (who organise and run the Winter and Summer Balls). Throughout the year we’ll be running these positions and you could be in the handbook next year like the guys above. Later in the year, we run the Exec elections for those who are more keen! But, you don’t have to run for a position to get involved, you can join sports/societies which is a fantastic way to meet friends regardless of skill level. A lot of Clubs do not care if you’ve never played before, and joining in with clubs is all part of the ‘Durham Experience’. Still not for you? Don’t worry! Just turn up to the SRC events and soon you’ll meet a lot of people. The Vern is a brilliant place to just chill out on a night, use it like we do… too much! Here, you get back what you put in, so dive head first into your University experience and take yourself out of your comfort zone… you won’t regret it.

HILD BEDE SRC EVENTS The fun doesn’t stop after Induction. Our Social Secretary, Sarah and the Bar committee ensure that there are plenty of events organised to provide a distraction from work. The Acoustic/Open Mic Night is one of Hild Bede SRC’s most popular regular events. Bringing in some of the best up and coming student talent from the length and breadth of the country (and all the halls of residence) our biggest problem is trying to get everyone in! In addition to regular parties and Hild Bede has a collection of traditional events that have been occurring for years. The Hild Bede Ents Calendar include refreshers, our annual Beer Festival (recently rechristened

COLLEGE DAY

‘Hild Bedestock’), Fashion Show and the Shincliffe Challenge (consisting of rowing a boat 1.5 miles consuming a beverage and returning promptly). Every Thursday is the famous Vernon Arms Big Bar Quiz with great prizes on offer for the winners and once a Fortnight we have an acoustic night. The SRC and Senior Common Room often link up to organise such events as a Burns Night celebration, Proms on the Lawn and Barbeques on Thurston terrace. If you have any ideas regarding ents then speak to Sarah, and stand for bar committee in the first SRC meeting of term and organise a party you want to see happen!

(the best day ever…*)

The highlight of the Hild Bede social Calendar; College Day. Think Pimms, summer dresses and outrageous blazers. Hild Bede’s College day is the best in the University, and is one of the only College to have a Cathedral Service. College Day is a day-long celebration of college life and its traditions, history and future. Someone once said that Hild Bede runs from College Day to College Day, and we certainly agree with them. College Day is early in the Easter term and somehow, the sun always shines despite the North Eastern weather’s best efforts. The day begins with champagne breakfast at 9am accompanied by a string quartet, followed by a Hild Bede only ceremony in the Cathedral and a sumptuous buffet feast back at College. The afternoon sees the awarding of college colours for achievement within our Clubs and Societies and the College Olympics. The day ends with a traditional Ceilidh in Caedmon Hall that evening followed by House DJ. It’s a chance to enjoy all that is Hild Bede, and show the rest of the University that we really are comfortably the greatest college in Durham!. (*seriously!)

COLLEGE DAY

20 “THE BEST DAY EVER”

THE VERNON ARMS BAR 21 Served with Honour The Bar is the social heart of the college; there’s always something going on. Situated in Caedmon building, the Vern opens everyday at 6.:0 and closes at 11pm, except on Fridays and Saturdays when it is open until midnight. It’s open during the day for sporting events which are shown on our projector and big screen or just to chill out by the pool tables. The Vern also boasts two additional plasma screens, a PlayStation4, Wii console, Wi-fi, a darts board, table football and the two cheapest pool tables in Durham (20p a game!)

The profits we make through the Vernon Arms are spent on Clubs and Societies, subsidising balls, new equipment and facilities, and general expenditure to improve student life in the college. A drink in the Vern is never wasted!

The bar is a great place to meet people, relax and have a couple of drinks after all that studying during the day! The prices are LOW, perfect for the thirsty student and it is right on your doorstep making the Vern THE place to spend your free evenings. Most of our events are located in the bar: Induction Week, Parties, Weekly bar quizzes (every Thursday, imaginative team names appreciated), after formal entertainment as well as most other one off events. The Bar is named after the legendary Dr Vernon Armitage, Principal of Hild Bede from 1975 to 1996, a man greatly loved and respected by the students. He still lectures in mathematics and is patron of Student Community Action as well as founder of Durham University Charities Kommittee (DUCK). Drink Safe! Although alcohol does play a part in the ‘social education’ of coming to University, it is a good idea to get the balance right. All draught soft drinks in the bar are sold at the lowest possible price (70p a pint) and are free at balls and other events. You can also request a personal attack alarm from the SRC if you should require one for reassurance on your journey home.

If you wish to hold a private event in the Vern, for example a birthday party, get in touch with Sarah at sarah.hunter@durham.ac.uk

FORMAL DINNERS

22

It would be rude not to . . . A very “Durham” tradition, formals are events not to be missed. Usually themed and requiring a specific item of clothing/ colour or otherwise, formals are particularly special at Hild Bede. Occurring once a fortnight, our formals are an even bigger event than those at most colleges with a free bop in Caedmon Hall afterwards. Themes this year have included St Trinian’s (raising money for Breast Cancer Care), the Yearbook formal, Clubs and Socs formal and a DUCK formal (Durham University Charities Kommittee). You can apply for a table by filling in the forms that become available on-line and in reception and from the SRC Office near to the dates of the dinners. At Hild Bede we have many traditions, especially at formal dinners, which include a rousing rendition of ‘The 12 Days of Christmas’ at the eponymous formal, a Charity Exec Auction at the DUCK formal and many more you will learn of upon arrival! Don’t panic about buying a dress in every colour though, a belt/ bracelet/coloured eyeshadow will be fine if you just don’t have anything relating to the theme in your wardrobe! Girls– bringing along a few cocktails dresses is a good idea, and boys, a DJ will be a great investment as you’ll have many opportunities to wear it. Formals are not compulsory but are extremely popular, so make sure you get your forms in early if you want a table!!! Freshers have priority at the first open formal of the year, the Association Formal, but get your forms in quickly to allow Kishen Vora to organise a fantastic evening’s events. In addition to payment for the meal each table of eight people must give a cheque for £160. This is caution money and acts as a deposit against unruly behaviour. If you are reasonably orderly, polite and co-operative with staff and enjoy your evening quietly the cheque is then destroyed. If not, it will be cashed - you have been warned!

Formals are EXTREMELY POPULAR and tables are allocated on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED BASIS so keep your eyes open around college for details of the dates and ALWAYS CHECK YOUR EMAIL!

As is traditional, last year’s SRC President, Rob Danvers (left) was bought at a Charity Auction for our Valentine’s Formal last year by Robyn Morley!

‘THE’ HILD BEDE BALL 23

The best Balls in Durham. If there is one thing that you simply cannot afford to miss during your time in Durham, it’s the Hild Bede balls. We hold two balls each year - one at Christmas to start the festive season in style and one in summer to celebrate the end of exams and the academic year with a flourish. It is safe to say balls at Hild Bede are out of this world and the envy of other colleges! Always with a theme, the Balls are the most anticipated events in the Hild Bede calendar!! The SRC Exec and Ball Committee work and plan the entire year to transform Caedmon hall into a spectacular scene and the memories from each one will stick with you for life! Expect a delightful 3 course meal, incredible ents (fairground rides, inflatable ents, video simulators, arcade games, shisha tents and so much more) and big name acts. In recent years Caedmon stage has been host to The Vengaboys and Scouting for Girls (most recently), Tinie Tempah, Nero, Wheatus, the Zutons and last summer we had Basshunter performing an electrifying set. Have a glimpse of The Vengaboys at the Hild Bede Summer Ball 2014 at http://tinyurl.com/mdh9zsv We go wild with decorations, having transformed Caedmon hall into a giant flying ship for our Neverland Ball and the queen of hearts’ castle for our Alice in Wonderland themed ball (and pasted walls with chocolate for a Willy Wonka themed ball a few years back). We have also introduced a silent disco to play into the early hours of the morning, tempting everyone to make the ‘Survivor’s Photograph’ and breakfast, usually taken around 5am the next morning. Don’t be surprised if you’re crawling into your bed at 8am with your dinner jacket still on! Hild Bede’s balls are some of the best events we hold here, and are worth every single little penny. Prices are around £45 for the Christmas Ball and £65 for the Summer Ball, and are well worth saving up for! If you look at your ents guide in your freshers’ pack however, you will see that you can buy both tickets in advance for £85 – bargain! With about 700 people attending, Hild Bede balls are the most anticipated events of the year and will provide you with some of the greatest memories you will ever take away from Hild Bede. Understandably the tickets for these balls are in extremely high demand and believe everything you hear about people queuing long through the night to get a table!! http://www.hildbedeball.com

Want to help organise and run the Balls? Run for Ball committee at the first SRC meeting of term or speak to Miriam Gott, our Ball Officer to volunteer!

A night to Never Forget

WHAT TO WEAR?

24

Your guide to dress-codes at Durham One of the most frequently asked questions we are asked before you guys arrive is “what do I wear at X event?” Like the boys, the girls panic a lot before they arrive about what to wear… don’t worry, you’ll soon realise that one of the only rules to always abide by is NEVER WEAR HEELS ON COBBLES! Fear not! Our resident Northerners, George McNeilly and Meg Foster are on hand to help you guys with what to wear at Formals, Balls and College Day… They absolutely loved the opportunity for a bit of tongue-in-cheek modelling.

“LOUNGE SUIT” Annoyingly, this is not a dressing gown. When the occasion calls for a lounge suit… Boys What you’d wear to an interview - suit and tie (and maybe a waistcoat if you’re feeling cheeky).

Girls A little more difficult to explain… either a cocktail dress, skirt and shirt, or trousers and shirt. You want to hit the balance right between smart/casual and dressy.

“BLACK TIE” Most common error: wearing a tie that is black. Boys Tux it up! Bowties, your swankiest suit, pocketsquares… all the good stuff. Girls At a formal, it’s best to go for a shorter cocktail dress (by shorter, I mean shorter than your ankles), if in doubt… throw a blazer on! There’s a much bigger range at Balls, where girls can either wear something on the right, or a floor -length number.

“COLLEGE DAY” Boys Blazer, shirt, chinos (in a ridiculous colour) - done.

Girls What you’d wear ‘to the Races’, or to a garden party. I’d advise not going for white… PIMMS doesn’t treat you kindly.

THE MENTOR SYSTEM

26

When you reach the Bullring in Caedmon Hall on the first day you will be told who your mentor is (some mentors will write to you before you get to Durham). He or she should be in the dining room where there will be a buffet. Your mentor will have seen your pretty photograph (one of many you send) before you arrive, so don’t be surprised if a random person suddenly jumps out of nowhere and says hello to you on the first day! Each mentor is given a small amount of money by the college to spend on you. The way in which mentors perform their social obligations varies immensely, some will invite you over for dinner, some will take you out, and others may buy you drinks at the bar. If your mentor invites you to an event it is common courtesy that you reply and give them an idea of how many to cater for. After your first year you may opt to keep the same mentor or change – it is up to you. Remember you get out of the system what you put in and Kirsty McLaren or Laura Todd, the Vice Principal, will be happy to hear any comments you may have on the mentor system. The mentor system is a brilliant scheme in so many ways, giving you an extra source of pastoral support should you need it, as well as the opportunity to meet students in other years and have some home cooked food once in a while!

ADOPT-A-FRESHER

Proud parents during the College Marriage ceremony.

This is something special. At Hild Bede we are a family; literally in this sense. For years now every Hild Bede Fresher has been adopted by a couple from the year above and becomes part of their ‘family’! The scheme is hugely popular, and you will receive a form over summer to fill in and send back in order to be matched up with suitable parents (usually two students who do your degree/share your interests). Your Parents will meet you in the first week and are there to help you settle in, meet some 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students and make sure you know how everything works here at Durham! If you’re lucky, they might even buy you a drink! If you’re after invitations to house parties, passed down lecture notes, advice with essays/lab reports or another excuse to go out then join Adopt - A - Fresher. By the time some fourth years leave, they are proud “great -grandparents” in an extended college family! The main purpose of the scheme is to provide another source of information and advice. Your parents have been freshers too and will gladly pass on their experience and take you under their wing! This is one of Hild Bede’s best traditions - do not miss out and end up in the orphanage!

SRC FACILITIES

ACCOMMODATION

27

You should have received a ‘Room Allocation Form’ with the first wave of info sent to you by college – this is possibly the most important form in the pack. It is the information that you put on this form that determines where and with whom you will live for the next year. It should go without saying that the more truthful you are, the more likely that you will be in a place that suits you best. It is the SRC President, Kirsty, who reads these forms, not a member of College Staff. She will treat whatever you write with the strictest of confidence; no one else will see them and they will be destroyed in a year’s time. Hild Bede is a very large college and has many different blocks of accommodation each with their own character. Here is a short guide to each of them. Please note, you cannot choose your own block, and rooms will be allocated before arrival. Hild Main Block The main admin area of college, where all the college staff can be found as well as the SRC Office. Kirsty’s flat is also here, right above main reception. Hild is divided into many smaller corridors, such as East & West Bailey, Cloisters, Upper and Lower Precincts and the Lawrence Wing. With so many people here, Hild has a great atmosphere. Bede Another large block, which is usually entirely filled by Freshers, making the Bede contingent renowned every year as fun loving people who make the tills in the Vernon Arms tick over. Bede underwent major refurbishment fairly recently, which makes it a comfortable as well as vibrant place to be a resident. Bede and Hild Gym blocks Situated above our two gymnasia, Bede and Hild Gym blocks have around 20 rooms each, creating really close communities. They’re obviously ideally located for the sporting, and are situated close to Bede and Hild main blocks respectively. Thorp Thorp block is very close to the Caedmon complex, being between that and the river. With a first-class view of the university cricket pitch and right next to the boat house and tennis courts and the accolade of being the closest block to lectures, this is a great block to live in as a Fresher, and is also popular block with 3rd and 4th years coming to live back in. The interior has been renovated over the summer of 2012. Christopher Christopher is a large block with five floors of excitable Freshers. Although slightly further away from Caedmon and lectures than the other blocks, all the rooms are huge and have great views of both the city and Christopher lawn, where students can often be found having BBQs and sunbathing in the summer term. Manor House, Manor Lodge, Charles Stranks’ House & Gables Four houses with large rooms and some double rooms. All great fun to live in, they are ideal sizes for get-togethers in front of a TV or with some beers! Another advantage of them is that they have large common rooms and are equipped with fully functional kitchens. Old and New Belvedere Another part of college that is situated on Gilesgate hill, these smaller blocks were newly furnished in 2001 and now form a mini-postgraduate campus and are a very pleasant place to live. Accommodation Post-First Year After your first year, a lot of you will decide to live in the city. It is important to remember not to make any hasty decisions about who you are living with… avoid promising your college neighbour that you’ll live with them for next year, you’ll have no idea whether you’ll still be friends with them after induction week. Fear not! Robyn Morley (robyn.morley@durham.ac.uk) and the Students Union (accommodation.office@durham.ac.uk) are here to help you through the process, and you can seek advice from them. Living in the city isn’t the only option… you and your friends can also apply for a corridor together in college, for another bill-free, food-filled year at Hild Bede. It is a fantastic option and you get to choose your room, meaning you get to spend a whole year with your friends without arguing about money or tidiness!

COLLEGE STAFF

28

Prof Adrian Darnell, Acting Principal Adrian.c.darnell@durham.ac.uk Professor Darnell has had a long history with Durham University as a student, a lecturer and as the Deputy Head of Colleges and Student Experience. Adrian would be delighted if you introduced yourself during your early days in Hild Bede and he is a man you should really try to get to know, as he is ultimately responsible for everything and everyone in college.

Laura Todd, Vice Principal and Senior Tutor laura.todd@durham.ac.uk Having been with us for five years Laura has certainly become a vital member of the Hild Bede family! She is very approachable and kind in nature and in her approach to her role of head of pastoral care. She is here to ensure that the students are offered pastoral support and is available to deal with problems of any nature which may affect you or your studies during your time here. Laura has been in Durham ever since she graduated as a mature student. She has an adventurous side- she is a qualified motorcycle instructor in her spare time!

Chris Finnemore, Bursar c.a.finnemore@durham.ac.uk Responsible for the purse strings of Hild Bede and St Cuthbert’s, Chris can be found either hard at work in one college or strolling along the towpath to the other. When all students are walking around with a gloomy look on the face after having just shelled out for their college bill, you will normally find Chris’s grin stretching from ear to ear. Chris is also the Designated Premises Supervisor for both college bars, so if he’s looking a bit down you can cheer him up by spending more in the bar!

Elaine Franklin, Student Support Officer e.c.franklin@durham.ac.uk Although Elaine does not work in the College Office itself she can be found on the same corridor and can certainly be classed as ‘one of the girls’. She never stops smiling and is one of the warmest and most genuine people you will ever meet. So give her a great big hug (or better still buy her a drink) and remember she’s responsible for letting you come to Hild Bede! Elaine is also a college mentor.

Joanne Moorhouse, Operations Manager joanne.moorhouse@durham.ac.uk Joanne is the head honcho of all the domestic and services staff and is responsible for the college’s housekeeping and domestic organisation. She also logs the student damages made throughout the year so make sure you stay on her good side! She also works closely with Debbie Dinning and Kingsley Forster. If you have any operations-related queries, Joanne is very friendly and would be happy to help!

COLLEGE STAFF

Anne Franklin, Bonny Bainbridge and Joanne Thirlaway, Student Support Secretaries Julie Blake, Principal’s Secretary & Alumni Relations Administrator When you arrive in Hild Bede you will meet Julie, Joanne, Anne and Bonny verifying ID in the Whittaker Room but you’ll normally find them working in the College office. There is no other office in the world with such friendly ladies inside, and they contribute immeasurably to the atmosphere in the College and the excellent Hild Bede spirit. They make regular appearances at balls, formals, and other SRC events and julie.blake@durham.ac.uk are valued members of the Hild Bede joanne.thirlaway@durham.ac.uk family.

a.k.franklin@durham.ac.uk a.b.bainbridge@durham.ac.uk

Claire Johnson and Debra Stone, Receptionists reception.shb@durham.ac.uk Debra and Claire are our daytime receptionists, and you are sure to see a lot of them—whether you are picking up a parcel or have lost your room keys! Make sure when you walk through reception you give them a smile and a wave!

Natalie Lander and Susan Quail, Finance Office Natalie.everitt@durham.ac.uk, Poor Natalie and Susan spend most of their time cooped up in an office just past the computer room, crunching numbers and paying the bursar’s admirable wage bill. They rarely manage to escape from the Finance Office so if you do set eyes on them, savour the moment and give them a big smile, they’re working very hard back there, all for our benefit. Remember also that they are there if you have any problems/queries concerning your college bill.

Becky Martin, Sabbatical Development & Alumni Relations Officer Hildbede.alumni@durham.ac.uk Becky is in charge of organising Old Boys/Girls Weekend, maintaining relations with our diverse network of former students (aka Hild Bede Alumni). Becky runs Hild Bede’s Career Mentor Scheme in which she puts current students in touch with successful former students in a variety of industries and professions. With over 140 Career Mentors, Becky is looking for students to take advantage of this initiative, so email her if you are interested. Becky can also chat to you about fundraising for your Club or Society, reunion events after you graduate, or anything to do with the Hild Bede Alumni Association.

We also have a Chaplain as part of our College Staff who runs the Chapel, Choir and Church of England Services. The Chaplain is a Welfare contact who is a point of contact for people of all faiths. This year, we said goodbye to our Chaplain of 10 years, Jonathan and are currently looking for his replacement!

COLLEGE STAFF

30 Happy to help

Porters, led by Kingsley Forster, Assistant Operations Manager; Services Kingsley.forster@durham.ac.uk The College employs a large army of people who you will have regular contact with and work to ensure that college is a vibrant, supportive functioning community. You will be sure to regularly come across our day porters, the infamous JT and Bruce. We have porters who cover night shifts too so that reception remains open 24hours. We also have a great team of weekend porters, be certain to say hi - especially to the fellas who work the night shift who would welcome a chat and some company, even if it is to tell them about your night in Klute! It’s Reception you need to call when something breaks or goes wrong in your room too, so be nice!

Domestic Staff, led by Debbie Dinning, Assistant Operations Manager; Housekeeping deborah.dinning@durham.ac.uk The College also has a troop of domestic cleaners who do a terrific job. You will certainly get to know the cleaner on your corridor rather well - and they’ll certainly get to know you (and whoever you choose to share your room with...). They’re a great laugh and have seen many student study room bombsites, but please make their jobs easier by ensuring that your room is tidy when they need to hoover and tidy up.

Catering Staff Over in the Caedmon complex we have a dinner staff who pursue culinary brilliance on a very tight budget. Led by Sandra Wilson and Robbie Cummins they succeed in producing the best food in the University and are able to show the full extent of their skills not only on a day-to-day basis, but especially during formals where the food is top-notch. During normal mealtimes they’d appreciate it if you would learn the quirky rules of what you are and are not allowed to eat- and for goodness sake if you don’t like what’s on offer they won’t appreciate any rude comments. Be polite, these ladies and gents do a fine job! College food has been somewhat revolutionised lately. In the last couple of years an unlimited Salad Bar has been introduced and recently a freshly made soup-of-the-day has been made available. The catering staff always work their hardest to bring you the best food, whether it is 4pm on the last day of term or your first formal dinner. We have a lot to thank them for.

REGISTRATION

31

2 SIMPLE STEPS... Registration is one of the most important things you’ll do during the Induction period. Not only do you choose the modules you will be studying this year, but it will also record you as a registered student of the University of Durham. Many students find the procedure of registration tricky and stressful, and with this in mind we have produced the following explanation. The university are trying to put as much of the registration process as is possible online so for the most up to date procedures check the website at:

www.dur.ac.uk/student.registry/registration/ STEP 1: For your transition into college life to be as smooth as possible it is imperative that you do complete the online enrolment procedure in its entirety before you arrive. It will save a lot of wandering about, bureaucracy and stress; giving you more time to socialise, relax and make new friends. There is information on how to do this in the information with the pack you received once you accepted your well deserved and well earned Durham offer.

STEP 2: There are limited spaces on many modules, so if you particularly want to study a module go as early as possible within your allocated time (this will be made clear during your first day or so). This can apply equally to modules both in your own core subject and to modules in other departments.

DON’T PANIC! If something goes wrong, don’t worry, there is scope to change modules or even courses after your Induction! If you have ANY doubts or questions please see Laura Wilson, or one of the college office staff, or contact the college office on 0191 334 8531. The sooner you inform staff about issues such as changing modules or courses the greater the likelihood that you will find a satisfactory resolution.

HILD BEDE ALUMNI

32

When you officially become a member of Hild Bede (at ‘matriculation’), you become a member of Hild Bede Alumni - a network of past students from Hild Bede. When you graduate, you’ll be invited to reunion events, including our famous Old Boys’/ Old Girls’ Weekend (which you are invited to as students). You’ll also be given the opportunity to help current students as a career mentor - a scheme which you can benefit from right now! We have 3 groups of Alumni: Alumni of the College of St. Hild and St. Bede (est. 1975), alumni of the College of the Venerable Bede for men (1938-1975) and alumni of St. Hild’s College (1958-1975) which were two separate colleges before we merged in 1975.

NOTABLE ALUMNI

Gaby Logan (nee Yorath)

Nasser Hussain

Sky Sports Presenter Honorary Life Member of the SRC (look for her on the board in the Vern) and former SRC Deputy President.

Former England Cricket Captain

Jock Wishart Polar adventurer, sportsman and explorer Sits on the ‘175 Planning Committee’ for Hild Bede

CAREER MENTORS One of the many reasons you’re so lucky to be a part of Hild Bede. You can be paired with one of our Alumni who is well established in a career sector that interests you. They can give you advice on CVs, internships, grad schemes, or whatever you’d like to ask them - and it’s completely free. To sign up, send your name, subject of study and career interests to hildbede.alumni@durham.ac.uk and our Sabbatical Alumni Development Officer, Becky Martin will be happy to pair you up!

MERCHANDISE

Past President Tim Mihill rocking a Hild Bede ‘full colours’ tie - the regular tie is the same, without the stripes. Note also the custom-made Hild Bede Blazer.

When you matriculate, you should ideally wear something ‘Hild Bede’, for boys, we have ties, cufflinks, bowties, pinpadges and Bede Scarves. For girls, you can rock a bowtie (a few of our girls do) or you can get your hands on a pinpadge or Hild scarf… we’re working on more merchandise for the ladies, don’t worry. To buy your merchandise, you can order in the Freshers packs or visit the SRC office with a cheque/cash and turn up to formals looking fiiiiiiiiine. Clubs and Socs Merchandise When you join a club or society, they’ll have plenty of stash for you. If you contribute a significant amount to the club, you may be awarded “a recommendation”, which means that the captain recommends you for a full award in later years. If you continue to contribute, you can earn “half colours” then “full colours” which is the highest award a club can give you for contributions to your team. Once you have full colours, you are entitled to wear a full colours tie.

THE CHAPLAINCY

33

A welcome from the Chapilancy! Welcome to the College of St. Hild and St. Bede: which usually has a full time Chaplain (who we are in the process of appointing) and the largest College Chapel in the University. The College is a community, and as such we learn as much by living together, as we might from lectures, labs or in the library. The Chaplain’s role in this community is to share in the pastoral care for the whole community, and to be concerned for each member of the community’s welfare. So regardless of whether you have a faith commitment or not, you are very welcome to talk to the Chaplain, in confidence. You will often find them at meals, or checking the quality of ale in the bar, playing squash, or out and about in the College, so do say hello, and ask if you want a chat.

The Chapel of the Venerable Bede was built in 1939, and is a flamboyant, majestic and quiet space, built very close to the school of Education. In 2007 it became a Grade Two listed building. It is for all to use, and is a good place to have some peace and quiet. It is open during the day, but at night you will need a key from college reception to get in. Part of the Chaplain’s role is to organise the services in Chapel, and to support those who are on a journey of discovery in faith. The Chapel services are open to all, but if you are of a different faith from the Christian tradition we can also put you in touch with those of a similar faith. The Chaplaincy is made up of students and members of the Senior Common Room, and we meet for services on Sundays and through the week, details of which are given on the weekly term card - The Christmas Carol Service is not to be missed! The College has a very strong choral tradition, and our choir is amongst the best in Durham. The choir is an auditioned choir, and we appoint eight choral scholars a year and two organ scholarships: so if you’re interested for applying for these, get in touch with the Chaplaincy. One of the great things about University is the potential to develop almost any interest you want to. For many it is a time to develop a spiritual life. The Chaplaincy aims to help with that in inviting guest preachers and running courses in the Christian faith. Also in Chapel there are many ways to be involved: from singing, to serving, to leading services and prayers, to helping run the Chaplaincy, or being involved with campaigning on social justice issues or being involved in community outreach. We hope that your time in Durham will be very happy. If it is not, there is a lot of support around, and we am part of that support network. We shall be praying for you as you prepare to come here, and we look forward to meeting you, and matching your photo to the reality! The Chaplaincy

CLUBS AND SOCS

34

Hild Bede SRC lives religiously by the motto “size matters” when it comes to the vast range of student Clubs & Societies that it hosts within the college, many of which have a university-wide reputation and are greatly successful. What has been produced below has been compiled by captains and presidents of different clubs and societies and gives a flavour of the diverse societies on offer in Hild Bede. The Clubs and Societies Fair (Tuesday 2nd October) offers you the opportunity to come down and chat to presidents and captains about anything that interests you or sounds a bit crazy. College teams have a huge range of skill levels, and usually train less than University Teams… perfect for joining multiple clubs! Badminton Badminton is a relaxed and friendly society welcoming players of all abilities. The only requirements are enthusiasm and the determination to win! Men and women’s teams are strongly represented in the intercollegiate league and trophy each year, and we will also be keen to snap up any more serious players in 2012. So whether you’re keen to represent your college or a complete beginner, come and meet us at the freshers’ fair to find out more! Men’s Basketball Club ‘Bede Power’ Hild-Bede basketball – Just lie back and toss your balls through hoops! With its own outdoor courts and regular practices, Hild and Bede basketball allows anyone to develop into the ballin’ legend they always dreamed of being. Regular socials will help to keep your mind off the strain of arduous training sessions and weekly games. All abilities are warmly welcomed, just remember to sign up early and bring a cup to the first training session. All will be explained…… Women’s Basketball ‘The Hawks’ Hild Bede Netball has four teams; Hild Bede Women’s Basketball only has four players this year! We are a tiny team, in numbers and height, and don't take ourselves too seriously but still manage to do well, coming second in the Premiership this year. No skill is needed to join, myself and my cocaptain both started with no skill so we fully appreciate enthusiasm and a will to try. So if you're looking to join a sport that’s fun, a bit of exercise and not too serious then Hild Bede's Women’s Basketball team is the place to be.

HBBC - The Boat Club Hild Bede Boat Club is one of the College of St Hild and St Bede’s largest and most successful clubs. On top of this we’re also one of the most successful college boat clubs and we have a strong tradition of sporting prowess, even beating many crews which are considered far superior to college boat club crews. HBBC caters for rowing at all levels; from our novice squads learning to row and compete for the first time, to our senior VIIIs who are competing at some of the world’s most prestigious and famous events. Our club also has a strong social ethos; we are the only club in Hild Bede to hold its own ball, and it’s an event not to be missed. Indeed many of our members meet some of their lifelong friends in the boat club; a few have even met their future husbands and wives. We welcome male and female members, and if you don’t fancy your hand at rowing, you can become a cox and guide the boats to glory!

Chapel Choir Hild Bede possesses, possibly, the best chapel choir in Durham! We also have the largest chapel by quite some margin and the best acoustics in the city The choir sings choral evensong every Wednesday and a sung Eucharist every other Sunday. We also sing three or four evensongs in Cathedrals around the country (York, Ripon, Durham, St. Paul’s, etc). Every year we go tour after the exams.

CLUBS AND SOCS Last summer the choir went to New York. The choir is auditioned and Choral Scholarships can also be auditioned for. Two organ scholarships are available each year.

35

Hild Bede Theatre is one of the biggest and most successful societies in college and the University, and is a perfect opportunity to get involved regardless of your previous experience! HBT offers involvement at every level of theatre, from directing to acting, tech to producing. Make sure you don’t miss out on the brilliant social and theatre visits throughout the year! Recent years have seen D’Oscar award-winning performances of “Oliver!” and “Chicago”, as well as “One flew over the Cuckoo’s nest” among plenty of others! If you don’t fancy your hand on or behind stage, make sure you hurry down quick for the best seats in the house - HBT’s shows sell out quickly owing to their outstanding quality and reputation.

For more information check out the website: http://www.dur.ac.uk/chapel.choir/ Cheerleading Society Since starting 6 years ago, the Cheerleading Society has already been a great success. Once a week we have a practice, and then strut around the football and rugby pitches in our uniforms cheering for Hild Bede, as well as helping out at DUCK events. Last year, we went to Dublin to cheer on our teams at DOXBRIDGE and will definitely be going again this year! We also have some of the best socials in college! If you want to be a part of the sexiest and best society, then come and find us at the college Freshers’ Fair to join the team - boys are of course welcome too! Cricket Club Hild Bede Cricket Club has had several seasons of incredible success. There will be nets in the 2nd term and everyone is encouraged to attend these, no matter what standard you think you are. If you are interested in joining, speak to the club captains and sign up at the freshers fair.

Men’s Football When college football teams see Hild Bede AFC on their fixture list, it’s enough to strike fear into the hearts of even the most talented footballers in Durham. With two new teams for the 2014/15 season, this will only improve as everyone who wants to play will be given the opportunity to represent the college to play (and win) football matches on a regular basis. Players of all ability are welcome, so attend the trials at the start of term, join one of our eight teams, and be the heartbeat of the best football club in Durham.

CLUBS AND SOCS Women’s Football - “The Mooses” OFFICI ALLY Hild Bede’s f a v o u r i t e Women’s Team, The Mooses are the best team to join if you are absolutely terrible at Sport or Eye- Foot co-ordination. The Mooses won a grand total of one match last year, and had plenty of incredible socials. This year, we held a charity match against the Men’s Football (in drag) and had yet another hilarious match. If you want endless fun, no pressure and to meet some of your best friends at University, you’re in the right place! Find us with cookies at the Freshers’ Fair. Kirsty and Jo (from the frep and Exec team) are proud Mooses, and will be happy to tell you the stories that are probably too inappropriate for a handbook. #wearethemooseygirls

What are we? Quite simply, a full blown cinema right here in Hild Bede. The Bede Film Society is Durham’s only student cinema and one of Durham’s biggest, with a state-of-the-art digital projector, Dolby surround sound system and the largest screen in Durham, all of which can be found in Hild Bede’s very own Caedmon hall. We show new films every weekend, with the occasional Wednesday showing thrown in for good measure. Screening everything from chick-flicks to scifis, comedies to horrors, blockbusters to independent successes, we cater to everyone’s film tastes. Alongside this we even show student made films, meaning that whether you’re a film goer or a film maker, we’re your cinema. Drinks can be purchased at the bar and we also supply pick ‘n’ mix at our own little shop to take in with you. Films cost £3 for members, and a mere £1 after you become a member of one of Hild Bede’s oldest societies visit: www.bedefilmsoc.com

full collapse Full Collapse is Durham’s premier rock night. We're based in The Undercroft, a basement venue in Hild Bede college. On alternate Friday nights each term, our DJs play punk/ rock/ emo/ ska/ metal/ hardcore, all at ear-bleeding volume! It’s run by students, for students, so it’s cheap entry and student prices on drinks. Come and find us at the Fresher’s Fair, or email full.collapse@dur.ac.uk for more information! www.dur.ac.uk/full.collapse Gym Soc Hild Bede’s gym recently underwent a £40,000 refurbishment and provides everything the university/ commercial gyms do for half the annual membership fee (around £60p.a.)! To join, you must sign up for an induction, before you can sign the key out of reception. Come and speak to us at the Freshers’ Fair

Men’s Hockey Hild Bede Men’s Hockey Club are the only college club in the University to play in two hockey leagues: the standard college league and the North East Hockey L e ag ue. We have played in division one in the NE League which consists of various local clubs and Uni’s, including Durham Uni 3’s and 4’s and Newcastle Uni 2’s. Being in this league is tough: most teams train several times a week, but this season we managed several victories and finished mid-table. The club is looking for quality players who are enthusiastic, up for a laugh and aren't tempted into training 300 hours a week with the university teams. www.dur.ac.uk/hildbede.hockey/

CLUBS AND SOCS

Women’s Hockey Pool Club (Men/Women) Our team is one of the friendliest and most successful in the college, and we’ve just been promoted to the College Premier League. And not only that, we also have one of the best social scenes around, with our infamous socials taking pride of place... W hether you've played hockey before or not, we want you to come along, hit a few balls around, make loads of new friends, but most of all, have a brilliant time! You'll never know unless you try it… Netball Club This year we will have four teams entered into the leagues so everyone, whatever standard, will have a chance to play matches. Whether you have only played a few times before, or whether you are very serious about it, there will be a team for you. Our main training session will be on Wednesday afternoons for a couple of hours, and we may have another one on a different day. Matches take place every weekend. Although we will work hard to maintain our success in past years, training is also fun and relaxed, and a great way to meet other people, and do some exercise. We also have socials about 3 or 4 times a term (sometimes a quiet meal, other times big nights out) that are not to be missed! Poker Soc We meet once a week in college to play poker. We have players who had never played before and are still very willing to teach new players the ins and outs of one of the fastest growing games in the world. You can play for free but we do encourage side pots to add to the thrill of the winning. T ho se com m it t e d amongst you will have the chance to play for a big pot at the end of the year. On the social side, we will have a couple of nights at the casino in Newcastle and a few beers after that so come and have a go! Hope to see you at the Freshers' fair!

Hild Bede pool club has five teams in the pool league, and with the B team being promoted this year, there is plenty of opportunity to play good quality pool. The Pool Club caters for players of all abilities. Whether you fancy yourself as the next Steve Davis, or just fancy a few casual games of pool whilst having a couple of beers this is the society for you. No matter how good or bad you think you are, you will definitely be welcome in the pool club. Bede RFC We are one the most successful clubs within college who cater for all abilities of rugby. We have been on several successful tours overseas, in the last few years to Dubai, Barbados and the USA. Palatinate, the University newspaper, wrote of the club ‘Bede must now be considered the University’s true Rugby College’. Hild RFC Hild RFC is a popular society for all ladies, whether you’re a hardened rugby fan or have never seen a ruby ball let alone played!! Rugby is honestly not as scary as it sounds: our goal is to dispel myths that you have to be big and butch to play!! Also as a society we struggle to prove that women are great multi-taskers by balancing our ability to play brilliantly against still having epic and fantastic socials, however we often fail and focus on the socialising! Training is held twice a week and is welcome to anyone who wants to try a new sport or just get some exercise whilst being part of an amazing and wonderful team who have a love for mud!! We’re also always looking for new coaches for any boys who think they’re brave enough (or who enjoy laughing at girls trying to throw)...

CLUBS AND SOCS Snooker Club Hild Bede is one of the only colleges to boast a full size snooker table. It has recently been refurbished so will be available to club members only. Be first in the cue at Fresher’s Fair for one of Hild Bede’s newest clubs. Snowbedeing Club Hildski Snowbedeing club was founded in 2008 by a group of students unhappy with the Durham Uni trip where other students keep to themselves, and you end up finding yourself in the same routine every day. The new college trip was much more inclusive; you could turn up with four friends and by the end have thirty new people to say hi to around college and Durham. This year, Hild Bede's snowsports club has joined with other colleges throughout the University for what will combine the usual college experience (meeting, skiing and drinking with new Hild Beders) with the advantages of the Uni trip (lower prices, fuller clubs, and better evening entertainment). So sign up, try out some ski/snowboard socials and get involved in what will be the best ski trip of your life so far! Men’s Squash Hild Bede squash needs you! Whether you're a first timer or a county player there are plenty of opportunities to get involved. We're the only college to have our own court, hold regular training sessions and socials plus a new squash ladder has been established which provides an excellent opportunity for freshers to meet new people and improve their games. See you at the fair! Women’s Squash We welcome all players, whatever standard, even if you've never picked up a racquet before. We're the only college to have a squash court on site and you can have access to this at any time. This year we played in the league and the trophy, managing a top three finish and also managed to have some fantastic socials which will definitely continue throughout the year.

Ultimate Frisbee Society Hild Bede Ultimate Frisbee Organisation (UFO) is one of the college's newest societies. If you haven't heard of Ultimate, it's a fast paced seven a side that's a bit like non-contact American football with frisbees. The aim is to pass the frisbee forwards into your end zone to score a point. It's a great fun and well worth giving a try. Hild Bede Table Football Society HBTFC is the new club in town, and in its first year of life it has grown massively. What started out as a ladder competition between freshers has turned into one of the most popular clubs at Hild Bede with members from all year groups sharing their passion for the table football, or just wanting a reason to go out and party in the characteristically awesome socials that HBTFC puts on. It is a relaxed society for everyone: from people who have never played table football before to those who consider themselves to be legends of the beautiful game.

Table Tennis 'Hild Bede Table Tennis is a new club for the 2014-15 year. Everyone of all abilities is welcome to join, either in a friendly social way or by playing in the slightly more, but not hugely, serious inter-college league. The club will hold sessions for a couple of hours at the weekend in Hild Gym where everyone is welcome and there will also be an optional ladder table running. In addition we have one team of 6 in the inter-college league with games taking place on weekday evenings. If you're not sure about joining, definitely come along to our open sessions at the start of first term where you can get a taster of what it will be like before committing to paying subs. HBTTC promises to be THE club to join at Hild Bede this year so come and find us at the freshers fair for more info, or email jonti.pajwani@durham.ac.uk.'

CLUBS AND SOCS

39

St. Trinian’s Society St Trinian’s was created to raise money for the charity Breast Cancer Care. However it’s the way we do this that makes us different. In the end it comes down to dressing as school girls/boy (with a hint of pink)!!! And having a good time! The society organises events such as bar crawls, formals, street collecting (last year we raised over £1000 in a day!!!), karaoke, not to mention the infamous ‘beer wenching’ in the bar. Last year we raised over £3000 and this year it should be even more. St Trinian’s is a light -hearted society, looking to separate people from their money for a good cause! We’re always looking for new talent/ideas! So come on our first bar crawl and see what we’re all about. Durham City Supporter’s Club DCSC are Hild Bede's most active new society. Established to support our local Football team Durham City at home games, win or lose we go to Klute. Membership is free and we're open to all whether you’re a die hard football fan or a casual hanger on just up for some good mates and some good nights out. Our socials are famous with themes like Crawl of Duty and pub golf amongst others, if you want to know anymore see us at the Freshers fair or talk to George on the Frep team. Keep the Faith

CHECK OUT AND JOIN ALL THESE CLUBS AND SOCIETIES AND MORE AT THE FRESHERS FAIR IN OCTOBER! AND DON’T FORGET… During induction week , we’ll also be having ‘sports day’, a Dodgeball tournament, fifa tournament and bubble football so come along for a giggle without commitment!

STUDENTS’ UNION

40

Senior SU Rep - Meg Foster (m.l.foster@durham.ac.uk) If you were expecting an eerily quiet SU bar and one-man radio to compare with the likes of Hollyoaks Community College then you’ll be please to hear that Durham’s Student Union building, aka Dunelm House, is home to more student services and facilities than Channel 4’s screen writers could chuck a 4-shaped block of flats at. That big ugly building en route to the science site is home to the Kingsgate Bar, Riverside Café, Purple Radio, a Student Advisory Centre and Accommodation Advisory Centre. It also houses countless societies and the sabbatical officers for sports, DUCK and the Student Union. It truly is a haven of cheap drinks (and food), free WiFi, listening ears, agony aunts and excitable societies. The University’s award-winning Palatine Centre houses many of the student services in place here at Durham. Apart from my lists of amazing things that you could do at Dunelm House to avoid coursework for a good three years, the Student Union also acts as a united political voice for all Durham colleges together. With council meetings held every fortnight at different colleges, you’re welcome to become a junior representative and vote on what we want the SU to do for Hild Beders. Want to know more? Visit the website, find us on Facebook, or we’ll see you at the Freshers’ Fair.

TEAM DURHAM Team Durham are in charge of the University sports teams and societies. The University has teams in most sports to a very high standard and competes on a national scale, where we are ranked No. 1 in Team Sport among British Universities and No. 2 overall. If you have received information about joining clubs before you arrive and even when you first get here, make sure that you are of a high enough standard to be able to play. University clubs are often expensive to join and if you part with your subs of £35+ and then don’t get to play or don’t have enough time it would be a great shame. Having said that, a lot of Hild Bede students represent the University at the highest levels, particularly cricket, rugby (union and league), rowing and many other sports. “Team Durham”, is attempting to raise standards even further - it’s even rumoured that members have to give up alcohol when joining! For more details, go to the Freshers’ Fair at the Students’ Union during the first week, or speak to Archie Murdoch, our Clubs and Societies Officer. http://www.teamdurham.com

DUCK NEEDS YOU!

41

Durham used to have a Rag Week until a group of students thought it a good idea to break into the high security prison in Durham and deliver a box of Milk Tray to the Governor. The incident, along with a flock of sheep appearing outside the Cathedral and a Principal’s car being suspended off Kingsgate Bridge, led the police to ban Rag Week. Durham students were left with no opportunity to raise money for the charity and the city, many say, lost its spirit. Peking-duck times Luckily however, we now have DUCK (Durham University Charities Kommittee) With a specific fundraising weekend during Michaelmas Term, followed by a DUCK Week in Epiphany Term and a Duck Day in Easter Term, there are also events throughout the year, both on a university and college level.

duck at hild bede You’ll see a lot from Hild Bede DUCK around College, with their first event in Induction Week - The Annual DUCK Scavenger Hunt! Hild Bede DUCK organize events and fundraisers within college, last year they organized the ‘awkward formal’ which raised hundreds of pounds just by getting people to pay for their friends to sit with someone really awkward! Throughout the year you can look forward to DUCK Week, charity auctions and plenty of opportunities to help out and fundraise for Hild Bede DUCK, as we are in competition with other colleges. We aren’t doing too well in the DUCK league tables but you can change that! You don’t have to be a part of the Hild Bede DUCK committee to get involved or organize an event, last year Kirsty (the SRC President) organized a charity match in her third year with the Mooses and the AFC Stallions in drag (left). The match was a huge success, and lots of people got involved and had great fun so try something similar and you may top the wacky ideas we’ve had in the past!

WHERE TO GO IN DURHAM

42

Durham is a beautiful city, setting the university in beautiful landscapes, historical buildings and a great deal of quaint English town. The architectural and historical heritage are perhaps most strikingly revealed in the stunning Cathedral, Castle (home to University College), and the historical buildings of the Bailey. The Cathedral also serves as a useful landmark when lost in town! The girls (and I’m sure some of the boys) will be pleased to know that Durham offers good shopping, many small independent shops and cafes mix with bigger high street brands (Topshop, River Island, etc.) in the town centre. For food and convenience goods there’s a massive 24hr Tesco at the top of Gilesgate as well as a smaller Tesco and M&S in Market Square at the centre of town. There’s also a Sainsbury’s halfway up Gilesgate, only 7 minutes’ walk from Hild Bede! There are lots of great cafes and restaurants in Durham. Quite a lot of the restaurants have a Happy Hour, so if you don’t mind eating a little earlier, then you can get some very reasonably priced food. Of the Italian places (of which there are many), La Spaghettata in the city centre is very popular and excellent value. If you fancy an Indian visit Rajpooth or if Mexican is more your style then try Tia’s, both are situated on Claypath. If you’re more hungry, visit In Shanghai’s all-you-can-eat buffet! More expensive, though excellent, are Zen (Thai) and El Coto (Spanish). As far as cafes go, Chapters, Vennel’s and Café Continental are nice. There are also lots of cute little tea shops and various coffee bars scattered around the city. For nights out Durham offers many bars and pubs, which vary in quality and price. All of the college bars are generally the best for value, and a college bar crawl is always a great (yet cheap) night out. Though 99% of the town is safe, as in any small place with a university there is tension between “town and gown”, and students normally prefer to steer clear of the North Road area at the weekends. There are various night clubs in Durham, the most popular being Klute, Studio, Loveshack and Market Vaults. There are other attractions in Durham. The Gala Theatre puts on regular shows and also houses a single-screen cinema, and the Assembly Rooms and Caedmon Hall also stage most university productions. The Botanical Gardens by Grey College are worth visiting, as are the Oriental and Palace Green Museums. Durham offers plenty to keep you going for a while but is a small city. Fortunately, there is even more to do in the area and the transport links are good, so you can get around and visit many more things even if you don’t have your own car.

THE NORTH EAST

43

The North East is dominated by Newcastle, its largest city. With a wealth of restaurants, bars, pubs and clubs it offers some of the best nightlife in the country, and excellent shopping too. Being only a fifteen minute train journey from Durham it is naturally a very popular destination for a night out amongst Durham students. You can sample the atmosphere yourself on the 2 bus trips to Newcastle early in term. It also has great shopping centres and cinemas. The recently opened BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and Millennium Bridge have also attracted many visitors. Pictured left is the Penshaw Monument, and the Angel of the North above. Northumberland and County Durham both have beautiful countryside, dales, hills, woodland and coastlines and are relatively undiscovered by mass tourism. Much of this is easily reached from Durham and can give you an escape from the pressure of university life. They also contain many other attractions; castles (for example Alnwick Castle, where much of the Harry Potter films were shot!), churches (such as Lindisfarne priory on Holy Island, pictured left), Roman remains (Hadrian’s Wall) and museums (Beamish working industrial museum, the Bowes fine arts museum) which are ideal for when your parents come to visit! For budding swimmers, the Sunderland Aquatic Centre is the only Olympicsized swimming pool in the area. You might also like to take parents (and their wallets/purses!) to the Metro Centre in Gateshead, one of the largest shopping centres in the country. Besides hundreds of shops, it has a cinema, bowling alle and, restaurants. You have the chance to visit here during Induction week as well! North Easterners are famously passionate about sport and this is reflected in the range of sporting venues. Premiership football can be seen at St.James, Newcastle and the Stadium of Light, Sunderland. While despite their high profile demise Middlesbrough offer Championship football. Test and One Day International cricket have come to County Durham’s Riverside Ground at Chester-Le-Street (pictured right) in recent years, along with the regular first class fixtures. There may even be an Ashes test there for a few of you here for four years! Newcastle Falcons rugby union and Gateshead Thunder rugby league teams play in their top divisions nearby, while International Athletics regularly comes to Gateshead. Whatever it is that you’re into, you can be certain that the North East can provide it for you. It is a treasure-trove of things to do and you certainly won’t be able to see all it has to offer in the few years you’re at Durham!

Resident North Easterners, Kirsty (President) and Harry (Head Frep) will be happy to give advice about where to go!

GENERAL INFORMATION A-Z Address Any mail sent to you while you are at Hild Bede should be addressed ‘College of St Hild and St Bede, St. Hild’s Lane, Durham City, DH1 1SZ.’ There’s no need to put your room number or block as all post is put in the pigeon holes in Hild Postroom.

Books You will probably receive a book list from your department suggesting that you buy 444 books for your introductory reading – don’t!! If you’re keen then buy the basic core texts, but please remember that all books listed will be available either in the university or in our (quite impressive) college library. Our advice is wait till you get here and perhaps ask a second or third year which books they would recommend (they may even sell you some if they’re nice).

Campus Cards You will be advised on how to get this important card when you get to Durham, it is both your library and DSU/NUS card. You will not be able to get into the library or many of the college bars if you do not have your card on you. You have been warned! It also has loads of helpful numbers on the back of it and lets you get student discounts!

The Chaplaincy The Chaplaincy is made up of students, staff and members of the Senior Common Room, who worship together regularly in Chapel, and seek to enrich the life of the College through pastoral care, prayer, and concern for the needs of the world. Anyone can be part of the Chaplaincy, which has within it one of the best choirs in Durham. The Chaplaincy seeks to promote the development of the whole person, as we each seek to understand what God has created us to be. It is coordinated by a Chaplaincy committee. We also have a lot of fun!

Cleaning and Damage Remember to bring your own bedding! A friendly squad of domestic staff cleans all College rooms. They work every weekday and are allocated one or two blocks for a pair of cleaners– this means that you will get to know your cleaners fairly well throughout the year (remember that they will see your room at its worst!). Cleaners will hoover and clean the sink once a fortnight and empty your bin three times a week; any other tidying you’ll have to do yourself.

44

You will be notified what days the cleaners will be cleaning your room; try and help them out by having your room in a fairly decent state! If a lightbulb dies you can pick up a new one from Reception, take along your old one so they can safely dispose of it. You are responsible for the upkeep of the room’s furnishings and any damage you cause will have to be paid for. Unattributable damage will be portioned between ALL livers-in on a termly basis (see the College Community Handbook for more details).

Computer Room We are lucky to possess spacious facilities, with around 38 networked computers in Hild Main Block. All rooms have internet connection points so if you have your own computer you will be able to access the internet from your own room. We are in the process of upgrading our computer facilities and should have Wi-Fi in all rooms by the start of term, and you can even print from there. There is also Wi -Fi in the bar, library and two common rooms.

DUO When you are given your Durham email address and password, you will also be able to access DUO (Durham University Online), an online ‘Blackboard Learning’ resource. Most courses use DUO as a teaching resource, posting important notices, details of seminar times, lecture notes and other useful information. When you register, your courses will automatically display on your DUO page. In addition, we have a Hild Bede area of DUO. This is used for posting important notices from the Principal and SRC President, so please check it regularly. You will also find application forms for Formal Dinners to download, SRC Meeting minutes and other such documents. We have a well used student discussion board which often produces lively debates, from who should appear at the Summer Ball to what we had for dinner the night before!

E-mail The SRC has the following mail address: Hild-Bede.SRC@durham.ac.uk If you have a question that you would like answered then send an e-mail to this address and Kirsty will get back to you as soon as she can. Alternatively you can ring her on 0191 334 8514 during office hours.

GENERAL INFORMATION A-Z Once in Durham you will receive your own university e-mail address that you will need to check regularly, even if only for academic reasons. To set this up you need to go to the Main Library, information about this is in the University Information pack which you will receive on arrival. The SRC President sends out an email every Monday morning during term time. It is extremely important you read this email as it contains important information regarding college as well as notifying you about events that you won’t want to miss, such as formal dinners and balls. The College Office send out a weekly email on Friday and it is important that you read those. Missing emails from the Principal or Management could have serious consequences.

Environment Hild Bede is committed to reducing its carbon footprint. How you can help: > Sort your waste carefully & recycle as much as possible - there are recycling facilities in your pantries and rooms. > Switch off lights and electronics (at the switch not just standby!) when leaving your room. > Switch off your radiator if you’re leaving for a few days and tell the reception if your room is too hot. This is also good practice for living out of college, when you’re paying your own energy bills. There are also environment events, Green week, Fairtrade fortnight and Green Moveout to name a few. You can get in contact will Anna Reid, our Environment Officer about all of the above… She also has some environment reps to hug trees with her & organise events, so keep an eye out for this once-in-a -lifetime opportunity!

Guests It is fine to have friends visit but they must be signed in at reception. If your parents want to visit, the college has a number of guest rooms they can stay in, although it is advisable for them to book in advance through reception.

Gowns There are only two occasions on which you will need to wear a gown whilst you are in Durham. The first is on the first Wednesday, for the matriculation service in the Cathedral, for which you will be provided with a gown by college when you arrive. You are charged £9.00 for this in your college bill. Remember to return it to the Operations Manager, Joanne Moorhouse. The second time is on your last day when you graduate and you will need to

45

hire this gown especially from the University outfitters. Do not buy a gown – it would be a complete waste of money.

Health During your first week you will need to register with one of the Health Practices in Durham. Most Hild Bede students register with the Claypath and University Medical Group. Student Health Centre: This is located just by the race course (opposite side the river from us) and is a small practice reserved for students and those who work in the University. You can book an appointment by internal phone (46086) and it normally takes one to two days to get an appointment. Claypath Medical Practice: This is closer to college than the student health centre (it is on the Hild Bede roundabout) and may be used for emergencies, but not for regular appointments. If you are in need of urgent medical attention, ring 111 or you should go to the casualty department at University Hospital, which is a short taxi journey away. Getting an appointment with a dentist in Durham can be difficult and we recommend that you remain with your present dentist and see them in vacations. There is also a Family Planning Clinic on Claypath and Nightline on Old Elvet which can help you with any problems and provide you with free condoms and pregnancy testing kits. If you are ill during term time and cannot complete academic commitments, you must report this to the college office and they will inform your department.

Library The college has a library on site (operated by the University) and two reading rooms. The library is staffed during the day by a librarian, Richard Lawrie and in the evenings and at weekends by students (who are paid). Rules that apply in the Library are basically common sense, Richard will be pleased to explain anything or help you with any queries you may have and is always please to help you if you would like to volunteer to work in the library. The Main University Library is on the Science Site (a.k.a lower Mountjoy site) and you will receive a pack about it on arrival in Durham.

GENERAL INFORMATION A-Z Lost Property There is a formalised system for the recovery of lost property. Lost property should be taken to reception, where details of when and where it was found will be taken. The item will then be tagged and stored by housekeeping; to claim lost property you must visit the housekeeping office, located next to the laundry room in the basement. Items will be kept for six months after which time they will be disposed of. Please note that items left in rooms after the end of term will not be treated as lost property.

Mail Reception holds the internal mail box. External is that delivered/collected by the Royal Mail is situated in the entrance foyer. Internal mail is free and links us up to all the colleges and departments and it is very useful for sending notes to mentors or friends in other colleges. Be warned however – it is unreliable and e-mail is often a better option. Mail is stored in the post room from Monday to Sunday. There are three pigeonholes for each letter of the alphabet: each week, the post is moved downward, so the current week’s post will always be in the top pigeonhole. At the end of each term, the mail is shredded so don’t forget to check all the pigeon holes before you leave at the end of each term just in case the LEA had a rethink and decided to double your student loan…

Meals All meals at Hild Bede are provided so there’s no shopping, cooking or washing up to worry about. Breakfast and Dinner are served in college, as is Saturday brunch, which is definitely the best meal of the week! Weekday lunches are also served in college, or alternatively you can pick up a packed lunch at breakfast, and a packed tea at lunch if you’re going to be away for any meals. The dining hall operates a cafeteria system, so you must present your meal card at all meals. Then you can look at today’s menu; join one of the two queues and when the opportunity arises pick up a tray etc.

Breakfast: Cooked breakfast is served Monday - Friday until 9am, and consists of any three from croissants, sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, tomatoes etc (7 items at brunch on Saturdays!!). You can also (or alternatively and after 9am) take as much cereal, yoghurt, dried fruit, tinned fruit and toast as you can eat, but please try not to waste

46

any food—you can go back for more! Fruit juice & hot drinks are also available from the machines.

Lunch & Dinner: You can choose one main course from the four options (one of which is always vegetarian), plus a piece of fruit or yoghurt (or hot dessert at Dinner). At the weekend ‘high tea’ is served earlier than weekday dinner (from 5pm), which is similar to Dinner but often includes cold desserts such as cheesecake. Sunday lunch is always a roast dinner, and an unlimited salad bar is available at lunch and dinner every day except Sunday lunch. Before you choose your food, you will be asked to show your meal card. There are no ‘table plans’ so you can sit wherever you want to. Jugs are available and can be filled from the water dispensers. Once you have finished you should stack everything you use back on a tray and take it over to the blue trolleys, which are over near the toasters. The food is one of the important things in College because it is something that everyone experiences at the same time. Catering is run on a tight budget and although we have a great head chef and the food is getting better all the time, there is still room for improvement. The Exec needs you to express your views and ideas. Do not be shy, however it is better to express them to the Exec at SRC meetings rather than telling the catering staff your ideas directly. Once a term members of the Exec and catering staff meet to discuss the food and address any issues, grievances or requests, and before such meetings our Deputy President Kishen Vora will canvas opinion about the canteen with Kirsty in the Food and Catering Committee; this is the most effective way of putting across your views.

Motor Vehicles If you need to bring a car to Durham (mostly for medical reasons), you must have obtained a University permit before you arrive in order to park your car. Parking spaces in college are very strictly limited and only those with disabilities (blue badge holders); educational needs (eg PGCE students on placement outside of Durham) and those with elite sporting commitments. Cars are not a necessity, Durham is an extremely small city, and you are restricted in where you can park if you are a student. If you do not get permission from the University, you must not bring your car to Durham, as you will be charged a hefty fine if you park in a University Space without a permit (£60)

GENERAL INFORMATION A-Z Newspapers ‘Palatinate’ is the university student paper and is published fortnightly; it is available from the Union and in college reception. If you want to read national newspapers copies of all the major papers can be found in the Alan Pearson Common Room.

Nightline If you feel you want to talk anonymously to someone outside college, Nightline is a service run by students, for students. They are located on Old Elvet just behind the Dun Cow pub, near Old Shire Hall and the University Health Centre. Everything they are told is kept entirely confidential, and they do everything possible to protect the anonymity of callers, drop-ins and Nightliners. They do not - and cannot - trace any call that is made to them, since their phone line is on the University network. They are purely there as a listening service and will explore your options with you, but will not try to influence which one you choose. Their number is 0191 334 6444, or 46444 from an internal phone, (it’s on the back of your campus card if you forget) and they are open between 9pm and 7am every night of term. They also provide free condoms, free loan of attack alarms, free anonymous pregnancy testing & leaflets & information on a wide range of topics. If you would like further information, or would like to train to become a Nightline volunteer, visit: www.dur.ac.uk/nightline

Personal Safety Although Durham is a very safe place to live, attacks on students, even though they are isolated incidents, do happen. You can avoid confrontation and the chances of being attacked by observing the following measures:  

 

lways travel in a group when it is dark or when visiting remote areas. Walk where the lighting is good. Never walk by the river alone at night. Never let a friend walk home alone after drinking or after dark. If going out alone, please tell others when you expect to arrive back. Consider getting a personal attack alarm – these are available for free from James or Anoushka, our Welfare Officers.

47

Private Parties and Events You are welcome to hold events in the college for a group of people, as long as you request permission from the college at least a week in advance. You must pick up a form from the College Office, and fill in the details before handing it to the Principal, who must agree to the event before it goes ahead. There are a range of venues available in college for private functions, ask our Social Secretary, Sarah for more details. The SRC has a barbecue which you can hire, but you must have permission from college as outlined above.

Purple Radio Durham’s very own online radio station! Listen online via www.purple-radio.co.uk and hear many a Hild Beder talking to Durham. Tune in between 26th-28th September for the interview with the SRC President about all things Hild Bede, including a Hild Bede Quiz with 3 students. More specific details will be announced via Facebook.

Recycling We have been encouraging staff and students alike to increase the amount we recycle in recent years. There are recycling bags in every bedroom for you to use, and recycling bins outside most of the blocks. Please empty your bag into the correct bins (paper, glass, plastic bottles & cans) as necessary. There are also recycling bags in each pantry along with more information about what can go in the different bags/bins. There are more recycling bins and glass recycling bins outside the Caedmon Complex, which take all colours of glass. The recycling bins for Hild Main building are situated behind reception in the courtyard (ask reception for directions). Anna, our Environment Officer is in charge of recycling and will be very happy to listen to any ideas you have. N.B. Aerosol cans cannot go in the recycling or rubbish bins, they must be disposed of separately. Please bring any empty aerosol cans to reception.

GENERAL INFORMATION A-Z Registration The process of registering for your course is complicated, but we have provided some help in this handbook (see page 31) and please read the information from your department. Registering for the various modules you will be taking is very important; it is an essential part of your admission to University and the exams at the end of the year. You will need to bring ID to the Whittaker Room on the day you arrive. Remember that you must pass ALL modules (including electives - ones you choose) that you choose to do in your first year. Every year people choose elective modules that they think are interesting rather than ones that they will be able to pass and every year people have to leave University through failing exams in these subsidiary modules.

Smoking As you might have guessed, smoking is strictly prohibited in all college buildings, including the bar, the JCR and all bedrooms. Smoking in close proximity to University Buildings (including college blocks) is prohibited. If you would like to stop smoking then please feel free to contact James or Anoushka, our Welfare Officers who will point you in the direction of help & advice.

Social Media Facebook: www.facebook.com/hildbedesrc Twitter: @hildbede Snapchat: hildbede

Vacation Residence If you cannot bear to leave Durham at the end of term or you are required to stay due to academic commitments (such as teaching practice), vacation residence is possible on occasions. However you may have to pay for this if you only have a short let, it does not include meal and you may need to move rooms. Reception is responsible for vacation residence and any queries should be addressed there in advance of any anticipated problems. For education students who have to stay on at Easter teaching practice, you may be asked to move to one of the out houses because they have better cooking facilities.

48

At the end of term you will need to move all of your belongings out of your room and also put any black rubbish bags out in the skips provided. (You may leave things in your room over Christmas but do remember to throw your rubbish away or your room will smell when you get back.) The college provides a number of storage rooms for you to use and in some rooms you can leave items in the lockable cupboards above your wardrobe or under your bed. During Easter the college is used as a conference centre and it is likely that other people will be staying in your room when you are not there. At the end of the year you must take all your belongings home with you. Remember that some of the storage rooms are other people’s rooms. If you do not move your things out of these storage rooms at the beginning of term you will be charged for someone else to move it – see the College Community Handbook. There are special arrangements for International Students—please ask the College Office for further details. There are plenty of Storage Companies in Durham to help you out over vacation periods (for a fee).

Washing Machines The myth that all students are scruffy and never wash is unfounded, and so at some point in the first term please do use a washing machine to wash your clothes! You have a choice of two places: the basement of Hild Main building, or Bede. Remember to separate colours from whites. It is £2.50 per wash (including washing powder & conditioner) and drying facilities are available for a bargain 50p for 30 minutes. If you need to use specific washing powder/tablets then there is a machine in each location that allows you to do so (though it’s not any cheaper to do a wash in them).

HOW TO SUCCEED AT HILD BEDE

49

Do 1- Introduce yourself to your neighbours (your whole corridor). 2- Get the Freshers’ photo – its great to go throughout the year and realise just how many people you have made friends with and helps put a face to much of the gossip. 3- Make the effort with your mentor group and college family - They will be able to offer you lots of advice, drinks and home cooked food. They will help you to settle in to college life nicely. 4- Get to know people on your course or in societies. 5- Bring plenty of fancy dress! 6- Bring lots of clothes for events (dresses, suits). 7- Talk to everyone and get to know as many people as possible. 8- Get involved and try everything. 9- Attend the SRC meetings to avoid a hefty fine! 10- GET AN UNCOMFORTABLE AMOUNT OF HILD BEDE STASH. 11- Use the Vernon Arms; it opens from 6.30pm until at least 11pm daily! It’s ridiculously cheap. 12- Smile, laugh and be proud of who you are! 13- Come and speak to people when you have problems. It doesn’t necessarily matter who to. There are plenty of people willing to listen and offer you advice and support. Whether it is the SRC President, Welfare Officer, the Vice Principal, your personal mentor or in some instances the SU or counselling service. Durham is a supportive environment which you should make full use of if the need arises. 14 - Check your email every morning! We cannot stress this enough. This is the easiest way to keep informed on everything going on concerning your degree, your societies and at Hild Bede. You will be expected to do so at most jobs so best to get in the habit now.

Don’t: 1 - Become a Facebook addict…. it can destroy your degree and its just not fair to stalk really is it?!... (but there is an official Hild Bede Fresher 2014 page so check it out!) 2 - Walk home alone at night (especially down the towpath)- Ring a taxi, a friend or even the President! 3 - Don’t spend hundreds of pounds on every book on your reading list! There are lots of copies in the college and university libraries, and you can even get them second hand if you really want to keep them! 4 - Don’t miss the Freshers’ Fair 5 - Don’t ignore the cleaners and staff, have tea with them and listen to their stories about other students!

have a fantastic summer - we’ll see you soon! If you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate contact to Kirsty on 01913348514 or hild-bede.src@durham.ac.uk or on the Hild Bede Freshers Facebook page!
