LOS MISTERIOS DE LA SANTERÍA los cuales dieciséis son los más venerados. Cada Orisha es poseedor de innumerables secretos, cuando alguien desea dirigirse a ellos, debe hacerlo con seriedad y respeto. Los sacerdotes de Santería lo hacen por medio de oraciones sagradas en lengua yoruba, ofrendan coloridas ceremonias y consagraciones místicas.

Santería es una antigua religión basada en creencias espirituales africanas.

Actualmente es practicada por millones de personas alrededor del mundo. La santería arribó al continente americano, cuando los conquistadores europeos, llevaron en sus viajes a miles de esclavos africanos de diversas tribus como los congos y los yoruba nigerianos. Los yorubas, tenían muy arraigadas sus creencias religiosas pero en aquel entonces no se les permitía practicar ninguna otra fe que no fuese la católica, de lo contrario estaban destinados a morir en la hoguera de la inquisición. Fue de ese modo como comenzaron a visitar iglesias, siendo influenciados por el reinante catolicismo.

Paulatinamente encontraron similitudes entre algunos santos católicos y las deidades africanas que ellos veneraban. La fusión de ambas creencias religiosas dio origen a lo que hoy en día se conoce como santería.

Las deidades veneradas en santería se conocen como Orishas. Cada Orisha representa fuerzas de la naturaleza, virtudes humanas, y el sincretismo que les asocia a un santo católico.

A las prácticas y creencias de la santería se les conoce con el nombre de Lucumí en Cuba y en el mundo hispano parlante. En el mundo de habla portuguesa se conoce como Macumba y Candomblé.

Orishas Los Orishas son las deidades veneradas en Santería. Su leyenda es conocida como Pataki, similar a la mitología grecorromana.

Un pataki relata que Olorún-Olofi, es el creador de todo lo existente, el primer Orisha que creó fue Obatalá, un espíritu puro y sublime. Por su parte Obatalá es el padre de muchos otros Orishas. Existen más de mil seiscientos Orishas en el panteón yoruba, de

Santería es una religión mística y misteriosa al mismo tiempo, porque no se puede gozar a plenitud siendo un aleyo o no iniciado. A los iniciados se les conoce como santeros.

La práctica y culto de la santería envuelve la realización de diversos rituales cargados de un gran valor espiritual. Cuando una persona decide ingresar en los misterios lucumí, debe experimentar varias iniciaciones, consagraciones y ceremonias. La primera de ellas consiste en recibir collares o elekes, fabricados con cuentas de colores.

Cada Orisha detenta su color o colores correspondientes. Los collares representan la protección y bendición de los Orishas, sus colores representan los colores que pertenecen a cada uno de los Orishas. Antes de imponer collares a una persona, éstos son consagrados por el santero.

Otra importante iniciación consiste en recibir los guerreros, ocurre cuando la persona obtiene un caldero y es apta para obtener la protección y bendición de cuatro Orishas: Elegguá, Ochosi, Oggún y Osún.

Osún es el Orisha que acompaña a Elegguá, se encarga de proteger a los santeros cuando existe una situación de peligro alrededor.

Para ser iniciado en santería se necesita contar con un padrino o madrina, un santero iniciado y experto en la religión y sus misterios. A los santeros en lengua yoruba se les conoce como Olochas.

Una de las ceremonias más significativas es “el asiento”, se lleva a cabo cuando el recién iniciado o Iyawó, recibe los misterios del Orisha que le guiará y protegerá por el resto de su vida. Cuando el Iyawó es iniciado, deberá abstenerse de realizar una serie de actividades durante el transcurso de un año, por ejemplo: bailar, verse al espejo, fumar beber licor, evitar el contacto fisico con otras personas y vestir diariamente de blanco de pies a cabeza. Arduo proceso por medio del cual el Iyawó, recibirá la bendición de los Orishas, alcanzando una pureza espiritual elevada.

Para conocer quién es el Orisha que regirá al iniciado, se necesitará la ayuda de un santero experto en iniciaciones, si existe alguna duda se consulta al sumo sacerdote, un Babalawo o iniciado en los misterios de Orúnla. El rito de los collares, los guerreros y el asiento, requieren ceremonias espirituales sumamente discretas, porque solamente el iniciado y su padrino o madrina sabrán los detalles.

Un iniciado en esta religión, no puede divulgar los secretos de las ceremonias con los aleyos, lo puede hacer únicamente con santeros iniciados, de lo contrario estaría quebrantando las normas y reglas establecidas de la santería.
