ABOUT ALL THOSE DEMOCRATIC ASPIRANTS ON BECOMING THE NEXT PRESIDENT the combined Chief Executive Office-Commander-in-Chief (CEO-CIC) positions.

Hilbert Morales EL OBSERVADOR

Since CA's Senator Kamala Harris announced, “I am a candidate for being elected “President of these United States of America” an additional 24 individuals have also declared their candidacy. The list represents the diversity of this nation's resident population: Four women (two Anglos; two AfricanAmerican), two Latinos and two more African-Americans have included themselves. The two Latinos are Julian Castro and Beto O'Rourke - both of Texas. My concern at this point: Will the Democratic Party require each one to disclose their personal IRS submittals for the last five years? This traditional norm has not been honored by the current Republican White House oval office holder, which results in an inability to assess whether the emolument standard of the U.S. Constitution is being honored. My recommendation is that if a candidate for the Presidency does not disclose his/her financial status when selected as the Democratic Party standard-bearer, the consequence must be personal disqualification which is enforced by the Democratic Party's action of no placement on any election ballot. What Donald J. Trump managed to accomplish (total non-disclosure) must not happen again because it prevents enforcement of the U.S. Constitutional emoluments standard (which is that an elected & seated President shall not personally profit (or benefit) in any manner from having

In prior elections circa the FDR era, political parties assembled and disclosed their platform which included the planks to be considered as priority legislation and public policy. Today, if that practice was resurrected the Democratic Party planks would include: a) Comprehensive Immigration Reform; b) Voting Rights practices which expand or suppress constituent voting (Universal I.D., gerrymandering, redistricting by those having no conflict of interest; c) Comprehensive Health Care services for All; d) Jobs/Living wages; Address Infra-structure issues; Veteran's Services issues; Reform criminal justice system; Improve FEMA's responses; etc. Federal legislation needs to focus upon doing the greatest good for the greatest number of its constituents. Special interests have their place but need not dominate the legislative process. The Progressive Turnout Project Polling Team asked, “DO YOU THINK AMY KLOBUCHAR COULD BEAT TRUMP?” This question is inappropriate. A better question is What would encourage more voters to support Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota Senator) with donations and their vote? This survey is flawed because it asks respondents to make choices without having any information or knowledge about Amy. A brief summary statement describing each current candidate would improve the ability of respondents to make choices regarding personal traits, values, priorities, experience, accomplishments, and validated personal background. Another perspective: I knew nothing about Minnesota's Senator Amy Klobuchar until a recent

evening news item presented this senator making her declaration I am a candidate for the Presidency of USA” during a blizzard snowstorm which deposited a thick layer of snow on her head & shoulders. She chided Mr. Trump by asking, “How would your hair stand up to these conditions?” I was immediately impressed with her grit. Further commentary revealed that Senator Amy Klobuchar has come up through the ranks; paid her dues and earned a reputation of getting things and legislation done by working both sides of the aisle; all traits needed to be practiced by more elected officials. She “keeps on keeping on” under adverse conditions which is why many of her supporters showed up despite a blizzard snowfall. The event had been scheduled and she prevailed despite the conditions. Also, she has a performance record of public service benefitting her community, its society and commerce. Recall, if you can, that neglected bridge (8 lanes wide) which collapsed suddenly into the Mississippi River with loss of life though first responders saved many trapped underwater in their vehicles. Long story short: Amy Klobuchar was the legislator who convinced her colleagues to pony up the funding which rebuilt that bridge within one year, an allocation of funds for infrastructural repairs during the George H.W. Bush Republican Administration when such funding was unheard of, despite the elements and prevailing conservative administration, SENATOR AMY KLOBKUCHAR prevailed very impressively! That query “Can Amy beat Trump?” is pertinent only in the long run. But it gets in the way of development of the commitment by the electorate (all voters) to

decide to support her with their treasure, efforts, and votes. My point is that the Democratic Party needs to find and select a candidate for the Office of the President of United States of America who is appealing to many voters who will deliver support and votes in volumes needed to defeat the Republican DARK MONEY machine. Without that potential, no one wins, and the negative ultraconservative schemes will continue to overcome the efforts of good individuals with good intentions. Finally, where is a concise summary of the issues which all candidates must examine and indicate their acceptance? Or reasonable non-support? Simply stated: We, the voters, need to clearly know what the candidate is willing to deliver legislatively. Certain public policy cans may no longer be kicked into the future! Public policy on immigration must be resolved; economic changes to permit a broader access to opportunity and wealth must be devised and implemented; that military industrial complex must be fully controlled by civilian leadership; Voting rights must be expanded to include all over the age of 18; The use of bottom line decision making must include Good Samaritan stewardship not just return on investments; Cheating in any form must have prison consequences - too many executives who cheat and lie simply get away with their self-serving ways; etc. And it is time for the ultra-rich to pay their fair share of taxes needed by government to meet its assigned responsibilities. The National Democratic Party leadership must devise and make public an old fashioned “Democratic Platform which everyone understands and hopefully supports. Its purpose is to minimize

the character assassination approach and I gotcha negatives by an honorable opponent. Pressing public policy issues which need resolution must be addressed (set up a schedule). The main one is to restrict the ability of DARK MONEY to undercut the Democratic legislative process by requiring full transparency. We, the People must insist on taking the high road into this nation's future. I think it is appropriate to deal with issues pertaining to the selection and election of the next President during this three-day President's weekend holiday. Please resolve to spent 30 minutes per week-end learning about your options. Do that until November 8, 2020 Election Day when We, The People will elect the next leader of our nation. We must elect an individual who understands that to be a leader of this American Super-Power requires being a servant of all of us; not just some of us. America's greatness has been tarnished by the current President who has tried to undermine all its institutions. When We The People decide to stand up in full solidarity we will assure that America will continue to be the great haven who is hospitable to the oppressed and impoverished. Its ideals already embedded in its U.S. Constitution are worthy of being practiced and defended from all who attack whether domestic or foreign - so Help us GOD! P.S. Recommended reading: DARK MONEY, Jane Mayer, Author and NYTimes investigative reporter who was subjected to many harassments and threats all during her efforts to collect information which corroborated all happenings presented in her book.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO IMPROVE YOUR FINANCIAL HEALTH IN 2019 Healthy credit habits for the new year

as you get rid of everyday financial stressors, which is why many see a positive connection between financial control and self-perception. Though increasing your credit score might seem daunting, following these healthy credit behaviors can help you make positive changes to your financial health and even your personal well-being.

It’s always a good time to reassess financial goals and work toward improving your overall financial health. No matter what your financial goals may be, having the right information and tools in place is key to getting you on track to take control of your credit.

Understand your credit: When starting on your journey to better financial health, begin by familiarizing yourself with your current credit standing, as well as understanding what factors may be negatively impacting your credit score. A great place to start is with your Annual Credit Report, which provides one free credit report each year from all three nationwide credit reporting agencies. The information in these reports directly impacts credit scores, so it’s important to carefully review for any factors that could cause your score to be lower than it should be. This TransUnion Credit Score Overview is also a helpful educational resource and provides tips towards building a healthier credit standing.

Taking the first step towards financial wellness can provide a sense of empowerment

for any inaccuracies or problem areas that may negatively affect your credit score. For instance, high accumulations of debt such as maxed out credits cards and unpaid bills will likely be reflected in your credit report. Unpaid collections are also commonly reported delinquencies that can cause a big hit, even when as low as $100 or less. Prioritize addressing these smaller problem areas first before they get worse. Inaccurate information caused by identity theft can also lower your credit score and should be disputed online. Create a plan for better credit: After resolving any outstanding issues identified while reviewing your credit report, create a plan towards improving your financial health, which should include: 1) On-time payments: Paying your bills on time and in full each month is key as it builds a positive history of on-time payments and responsible credit use. 2) Credit utilization: It is recommended to maintain a low credit utilization ratio, that is, how much of your available credit you’re using at any given time. It is recommended that you use no more than 30 percent of the available credit, otherwise, your score could be suffering. 3) Evaluate your credit cards: Before opening or closing any credit cards, do your research on the different types of credit cards and the benefits they have. Do one or more of your cards have an annual fee that you

could live without? Strategize which cards you use regularly and keep daily spending concentrated to one or two cards total. However, don’t close an old account just because you aren’t using it. Longstanding credit accounts are vital for building credit as this demonstrates a responsible credit history. Remain vigilant about credit monitoring and protection: Once you’re in control of your credit, the next step is to be diligent about monitoring your credit and cautious about your personal information, which includes fraud protection. Fraudsters may take out loans, lines of credit, or rent apartments in your name, which can negatively affect your credit if it results in a non-payment. If you think your information has been compromised, you can protect your credit by freezing it at all three credit reporting agencies. With TransUnion, you can simply freeze and unfreeze your credit with the touch of a button through the myTransUnion app at any time. Understanding and managing personal information is vital to achieving life goals such as owning a home, financing your education or having the convenience of credit cards for everyday purchases. With responsible financial behaviors, discipline and consistency, you’ll be on your way to improving your credit, and in turn, feeling more confident about your overall financial health. SCHOOL OF ARTS AND CULTURE AT MHP SELECTS JESSICA PAZ-CEDILLOS AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Local non-profit administrator is familiar with East San Jose Photo Credit: School of Arts & Culture

School of Arts and Culture

San José, Calif. — Jessica Paz-Cedillos was named the new executive director for the School of Arts and Culture at MHP by the School’s board of directors on January 29, 2019. She comes from SOMOS Mayfair in San Jose, where she has served as director of resource development since 2015. “Jessica has outstanding experience in managing and building non-profit

community organizations, and she has deep knowledge of the people, challenges, and opportunities in our community,” said Roy Hirabayashi, president of the School’s board of directors. “She has demonstrated effective leadership and a strong commitment to community engagement in order to develop the resources needed to achieve the best possible outcomes for families in East San Jose. I’m confident Jessica will help lead the School to a bright future.”

She succeeds Tamara Alvarado, who left the School in June 2018 to become executive director of the Leo M. Shortino Family Foundation in San Jose and had served as the School’s executive director since its founding in 2011. Paz-Cedillos is scheduled to start in March. Since graduating from Mount Holyoke College with a degree in history and Spanish, she has held various positions as a direct service provider and fundraiser to protect constitutional rights, end homelessness, and close the opportunity gap. She has dedicated her career to the public service sector and has worked for organizations like the Bill Wilson Center and ACLU. “As the daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico and El Salvador, I know firsthand the impact that arts and culture can have to build pride, preserve our heritage, and fuel community and economic development,” she said. “I look forward to working with a great team and our community partners to ensure the School remains a vital resource for our children and their families, especially for our low-income immigrant community, where people can celebrate their culture and build meaningful relationships with each

She diversified its revenue sources, nearly doubled its annual revenue from $1.5 million to $2.8 million, and helped raise more than $10 million over four years. SOMOS Mayfair is a non-profit community-based agency in the Mayfair neighborhood of East San Jose that supports children, organizes families, connects neighbors, and addresses systemic inequalities to uplift the dreams, power, and leadership of the community (www.somosmayfair.org). During the search process, Vanessa Shieh served as interim executive director for the School. She has been associate director for the past seven years and will continue in that role. “I’m deeply grateful for Vanessa’s leadership during this critical transition,” said Hirabayashi. “Her familiarity with our programs and our vision, and her strengths in non-profit management, have helped keep us on a steady course over the past six months. Vanessa will remain on our leadership team and assist Jessica as she takes the reins to carry out our strategic plan.”

6 Tips from Doctors for a Healthier Heart StatePoint

February is American Heart Month, and an excellent reminder that there are many easy steps you can take to improve your heart health. Unfortunately, nearly half of all U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, putting them at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the American Medical Association (AMA). “During American Heart Month, we urge all Americans to take control of their heart health by knowing and monitoring their blood pressure levels and making healthy lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce the serious health consequences associated with high blood pressure,” says Barbara L. McAneny, M.D., president of the AMA. “We know that by empowering more patients to monitor and control their blood pressure, we will continue to help improve the health of patients, while reducing health care costs.”

Patrice A. Harris.

To help you get started, Dr. McAneny and the experts at the AMA are offering six tips for this American Heart Month and beyond. 1. Know your blood pressure numbers. Visit LowerYourHBP.org. The site contains tools, resources and information for both patients and physicians, and was launched by the AMA as part of an effort to reduce the number of Americans who have heart attacks and strokes each year. Having a better understanding of your numbers and taking necessary steps to get your high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, under control will reduce your risk of heart attack or stroke.

2. Commit to manage high blood pressure. Work with your doctor to create an individualized treatment plan that includes healthy lifestyle changes that you can realistically stick to long-term to help you maintain a lower blood pressure and lower your risk for negative health consequences. 3. Be more physically active. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure. It is recommended that healthy adults 18 to 65 years of age get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity activity. 4. Eat a healthy diet. Making simple dietary changes can help you manage or prevent high blood pressure. These changes should include eating less sodium, reducing the amount of packaged and processed foods you consume (especially those with added sodium and sugar), reducing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and eating foods that are rich in potassium. 5. Maintain or achieve a healthy weight. Being overweight can put you at an increased risk for developing high blood pressure. Take steps to maintain a healthy weight. 6. Drink in moderation. When consuming alcohol, do so in moderation as defined by the U.S. Dietary Guidelines for Americans -- up to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men, and only by adults of legal drinking age. American Heart Month serves as an important reminder that living a heart-healthy lifestyle is possible. By paying attention to risk factors like your blood pressure, weight and more, you can reduce your risk for heart disease.

BELIZE MAKES BIG PUSH INTO SUSTAINABLE TOURISM, LATIN AMERICAN MARKET sites, but its cuisine has more of a Caribbean vibe and the country has a bigger mix of cultures, religions and ethnic groups.

Belize is a multicultural society that is home to Mayans; Creoles; Garifunas, a mixture of Africans and Caribbean natives; and the descendants of European colonists from Spain, England and Scotland; and Mestizos, a mixture of Spaniards and Mayas. The Spanish explored what is today Belize, a territory that became part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, but Spain decided not to colonize the area because of its lack of resources and stiff resistance by the Mayans of the Yucatan Peninsula. Later, English and Scottish colonists arrived in the region, followed by pirates, known as the Baymen, who established settlements on the coast in 1638, looking for hidden spots from which to raid Spanish shipping.

Mexico City - Belize is making a big push to create a sustainable tourism industry, aiming to protect the environment and avoid mass tourism by offering boutique hotels and crystalclear waters that are a diver's dream. Belizean Tourism and Aviation Minister Manuel Heredia unveiled a new tourism campaign, branded Belice: Tan exotico. Tan cerca (Belize: So Exotic. So Close), this weekend in Mexico City, targeting visitors from Latin America, especially Mexico, which is close to the Central American nation and shares some cultural and historical features. Belize, located in the Yucatan Peninsula between Guatemala and Mexico, has a population of barely 400,000 yet welcomes about 1.5 million visitors from cruise ships and another 490,000 tourists who mostly come from the United States, Europe and Canada. Tourism accounts for 38 percent of the Caribbean country's gross domestic product (GDP).

already enjoy protected status. The country has just 9,000 hotel rooms spread over 807 small boutique properties and restaurants feature local cuisine, with ownership in the hands of Belizean entrepreneurs.

Belize's main attraction is its friendly people, along with pristine waters ideal for diving and snorkeling. The country's cuisine is heavy on seafood, including fish, shellfish and lobsters.

Legend has it that pop singer Madonna was inspired to write her 1987 hit "La Isla Bonita" after visiting the town of San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, an island surrounded by the beautiful blue waters of the Caribbean Sea, putting Belize on the map.

Belizean cuisine is heavily influenced by Mexican and Caribbean dishes, with English food barely appearing on the culinary radar despite the country having been a British colony until independence on Sept. 21, 1981.

Residents, in turn, have dubbed the island Isla Cariñosa (The Loving Island).

Rice, fish, fried plantains, coconut milk, tamales, pozol and panuchos are all eaten in the Central American nation.

The country's other prominent ambassador is American actor Leonardo de Caprio, who purchased an island in Belize with the idea of turning it into a showcase of sustainability, the goal that the government has set for the former British colony's tourism development. "There isn't a single McDonald's or Burger King or Pizza Hut in Belize," Belize Tourism Board (BTB) director Karen Bevans said.

"Our goal is sustainable tourism. None of that all-inclusive stuff," Heredia said, referring to Belize's 25-year strategic plan for the tourism industry.

Bevans said Belize was hoping to attract Mexican tourists because even though the countries were geographically close and shared a Mayan heritage, they were neighbors who did not know each other well.

Belize is serious about safeguarding its environment and some 70 percent of the country's territory and waters

Belize's tourism attractions are similar to those of southeastern Mexico, offering many Mayan archaeological

Belize, home to the second-largest coral reef in the world, offers a variety of marine species that visitors can view at a number of beautiful spots, including the Great Blue Hole, a giant marine sinkhole off the coast. The Belizean coast welcomes divers looking to explore coral reefs and some 450 small islands, or cays. Belize, in fact, is home to three of the four coral reefs in the Western Hemisphere. Visitors interested in archaeology can find majestic sites to explore in the jungle, including Actun Tunichil Muknal and Xunantunich, as well as the Che Chem Ha caverns, Blue Creek and Tiger Cave, treasures that represent barely 10 percent of the sites explored up until now.

San José Launches Digital Inclusion Fund Californians Add Momentum to "Green New Deal" private businesses to retrofit buildings for Suzanne Potter to Close the Digital Divide SAN DIEGO - Grassroots groups such as the Sunrise Movement and 350.org are mobilizing across California and the nation this week and next to promote the "Green New Deal," a 10-year-plan to fight climate change by weaning the country off of oil and gas. On Thursday, Rep. Alexandria OcasioCortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., introduced twin resolutions in the U.S. House and Senate. Masada Disenhouse, co-founder of the group San Diego 350, said the United States and the world need to work toward "net zero" greenhouse-gas emissions, and fast.

Office of Mayor Liccardo

San José, Calif. – On Tuesday February 12 Mayor Sam Liccardo announced that the City of San José had authorized the creation of the San José Digital Inclusion Fund (DIF). This initiative, funded through private corporate investment and the largest of its kind in the nation, will provide programs and grants to the community to close the digital divide in San José. “San José aspires to be the city where the opportunities of innovation empower all residents and communities, especially those historically underserved and marginalized. Access to reliable, high-speed internet service has become a necessity, not a luxury but the reality is 95,000 San José residents are ‘un-connected’ with no internet access at home. Today that changes,” said Mayor Liccardo. “The Digital Inclusion Fund will ensure that residents have access to appropriate technology, whether for homework, career opportunities, or healthcare, and access to digital literacy programs, so all San José residents are equipped for an increasingly digital, 21st century world.” The Fund will be supported by the revenue from the small cell usage fees paid by telecommunications companies to upgrade broadband networks that lay the groundwork for 5G in San José. The City of San José and the California Emerging Technology Fund (CETF) will raise additional private funding. “It is always a good day when we can expand technology options in the capital of Silicon Valley while ensuring that no resident of our city will be left on the wrong side of the digital divide” continued Mayor Liccardo. The City has chosen the CETF, a statewide nonprofit organization whose mission is to close the digital divide in California, to manage the fund. The City will create an advisory board composed of local stakeholders to administer and allocate the estimated $24 million in grants for digital inclusion programs. “The Digital Inclusion Fund is a premier example of what can happen with sincere public -private partnerships. We are truly appreciative of our telecom partners for working with the City to take this pioneering step and are thrilled to be working

with the California Emerging Technology Fund,” said San José CIO, Shireen Santosham. “The CETF’s previous work with community-based organizations and other local stakeholders to get un-connected and under-connected households online across California makes them the ideal partner to do that for San José.” “The California Emerging Technology Fund commends the vision and leadership of the City of San José in tackling the digital divide with such commitment and focus. San José is a trailblazer in digital inclusion and a model of what is possible to ensure that the digitally-disadvantaged are the innovative entrepreneurs and skilled workers to attract investment and ensure economic prosperity in Silicon Valley,” observed Sunne Wright McPeak, the CETF President and CEO. Over the next 10 years, the Digital Inclusion Fund will connect 50,000 San José households with universal device access and universal connectivity at speeds of at least 25 Mbps upload/3 Mbps download; and ensure those households achieve and sustain the appropriate digital skills proficiency levels to stay ahead of technology, thereby increasing quality of life outcomes in education, workforce, healthcare and more. The DIF aims to begin grant allocations as early as this fall, with city programs and community organizations competing for the grants, ideally encouraging more innovative and demonstrably successful initiatives. In San José, the CETF will use a similar approach to ensure that the Digital Inclusion Fund is uniquely suited to address the challenges in San José. The solutions will be local and customized. How will grants be made? As the City and the CETF kick off the process, they are looking to get the first $1,000,000 in grants out to grantees in the fall of 2019 based on current permitting and cash flow estimates. Each grant round is 9 months long: • 3 months: Announcement and Launch of Digital Inclusion Initiative • 3 months: Community Awareness Outreach and Fact Finding; and • 3 months: Request for Proposals and Award of Grants.

"The vision of the Green New Deal," she said, "is really a massive program of public investments aimed at transforming the energy sector and the whole economy to create clean-energy jobs in infrastructure, to decarbonize the economy, and to promote economic justice." The Green New Deal calls for the United States to switch over to a national smart grid that relies on renewable-energy sources such as solar and wind. It asks government and

energy efficiency, and for job retraining for people working in the fossil-fuel field. Opponents have argued that the policies would cost too much and be disruptive to industry. Green groups are asking for a state-level plan to phase out drilling in the Golden State, but Disenhouse said she thinks the real potential is in the transportation sector because in Southern California, vehicles produce almost half of the emissions. "That will have to change," she said, "and that can be through combined efforts to increase transit, have more active transportation, like walking and biking, and electrifying vehicles."

The Green New Deal also emphasizes environmental justice. Its backers have pointed out that lower-income communities have been harmed disproportionately by pollution from drilling and refineries, and by the floods and wildfires linked to climate change. The Green New Deal Resolution is online at apps.npr.org, Sunrise Movement/ Green New Deal events are listed at sunrisemovement.org, and more events are at 350.org.

show como Cirque du Soleil?

UU. (U.S. TAKE YOUR JOB, PEOPLE WILL am were it not for a series of amazing mentors, role models, and masters whom I have been lucky enough to work for. For all practical purposes, my capabilities are directly attributable to my teachers (academic and professional). If our hypothetical senior art director doesn’t need junior art directors, or if the corporation will not allow the hiring of humans who are not expert AI coworkers, how will the junior art directors learn enough to become senior?

Shelly Palmer AI, specifically “augmented intelligence,” is going to have both an awesome and an unfortunate impact on our posterity. Let’s explore one possible way AI may impact the future of work, and how it may dramatically change how we train our workforce. The Graphic Arts Department (A Metaphor for Every Department) A brand manager needs an advertisement. So, the brand manager sends a brief to the senior art director (in-house or at an agency) and asks for something amazing to be created. On or before the deadline, the brand manager and the art director meet to review the work. The brand manager is presented with three approaches, and after a number of meetings, a number of revisions, and revelations, they agree on a final product. This is a process that has repeated itself for more than a century, and AI is not going to stop it (today). After getting approvals from senior management, the art director must execute the work and deliver all of the versions and variations required. These might include a full complement of IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) standard ad units for the web, graphics suitable for a video graphics package, newspaper ads (in several sizes), a 30-sheet billboard, a digital billboard in several dozen aspect ratios, full-page and double truck print ads (bleed and no-bleed), and a stylebook so that the package designers and the promotion agency can access the new look and get a feel for product design and in-store signage. A list of deliverables can have hundreds of variations, each requiring subtle compositional changes, revised typography, and resizing of images.

The Logical Conclusion

for the senior director to approve those. All in, a major campaign might take a 10-person art department a week or so to deliver. That’s today.

And while this may not always be true, today we rely on inspired, talented, uncompromising humans to create groundbreaking graphic art.

The AI-assisted Graphic Artist

But what about the junior art directors? They will be deprived of the mentorship, remediation, and education an apprentice requires to become a master. In a world filled with senior art directors who are augmented with AI coworkers, junior art directors need not apply. BTW, in this scenario the senior art director doesn’t need to know anything about AI or computer programming; the AI system requires only a click of a button.

Now, let’s imagine the same process in a slightly different way. In this scenario, the senior art director has an AI coworker (an AI system designed and trained to version graphic artwork). Instead of harnessing a team of junior art directors to build the deliverables, the senior art director clicks a button and the AI coworker builds every required deliverable, in seconds. Unlike handing the work to a junior team and waiting hours, days, or weeks, the work is ready immediately for review. The senior art director will still have to page through each version to give it final approval, and might even have to tweak a few of the versions to get them just right. But the basic work, the work of 10 junior art directors, will be eliminated – and so will their jobs.

Today, the senior art director hands this project to a group of junior art directors and graphic artists. This work is not tough, it’s just tedious, and there is a lot of it. Anywhere from a few hours to a few days to a few weeks later (depending on the length of the deliverables list), the junior art directors submit their finished work to the senior art director for final approval.

From a fiscal management point of view, the senior art director’s productivity has increased exponentially. The ROI is easy to calculate: remove 10 junior people from payroll who earn between ¼ and ½ of the wages their supervisor earns. The unit will enjoy a three- to five-fold reduction in annual payroll expense, maybe more. This is an excellent path to value creation (for the shareholders).

The senior art director makes some subtle changes to the deliverables that are not quite right, and the junior art directors are taught why the changes had to be made. Of course, some of the work is perfect, and it takes only a second

Some Things Won’t Change for a While The process between the brand manager and the senior art director will remain unchanged for a while. Creativity and collaboration are human traits that have a magical quality. Hits are a mystery.

You Get Where This Is Going Multiply this scenario by every department where productivity can be increased with human/machine partnerships. It’s easy to imagine millions of jobs simply being eliminated. Many of them will be people who trained a lifetime to achieve their positions. As each new purpose-built AI system comes online, the work for less productive humans will evaporate practically overnight. Why This Will Happen Almost every CEO will insist on using AI to push productivity to its limits. The competitive advantage is too great (if you’re first), and if you’re unfortunate enough to be a follower (fast or otherwise), an AI-augmented workforce will become table stakes. Nothing is going to stop this. What We Really Need to Figure Out For me, the most devastating aspect of this future vision is what happens to the farm team. Paying your dues started in the Gilded Age. I would not be where I

If you follow this hypothesis to its logical conclusion, at some point, the senior art directors are replaced by AI systems that have seen enough awesome graphic art to create artwork that is “good enough” from scratch. To be fair, the vast majority of work product created by journeymen across all disciplines is not at a “masterpiece” level. I like to think that the full replacement of creative workers and production workers is still far away, but I know differently. Look at the cab drivers around the world protesting ride-sharing services. They are fighting for their livelihoods. What kind of world will we live in if their actions are mimicked by displaced workers in every field, from every walk of life? What You Can Do about It There is only one thing you can do about this. You must become the very best AI coworker you can become. No matter how smart you think you are, there are things a well-trained AI system can do better than you can. It can look at more data, it can see the world differently, it can augment your capabilities. How do you become a best-in-class AI coworker? Start by learning to use the existing tools, inject yourself in the process, and become a lifelong student of your art and the AI tools at the cutting edge of your profession. This approach may not save your human co-workers, but it will position you to survive and prosper in our exponentially changing world. Author’s note: This is not a sponsored post. Newsom Lays Out Lofty Health Goals in State of the State

"We need to provide greater affordability assistance, reinstitute the Affordable Care Act individual requirements, put in place greater cost-control effort to help deal with the cost of health care in California," he said. Medi-Cal already serves low-income, undocumented children, but Newsom emphasized his support for extending health coverage to qualifying undocumented people ages 18 to 26. Wright said he'd go even further, with an extension to all low-income Californians regardless of age or immigration status. Opponents have said such a system would bust the state budget.

FEBRUARY 15 - 21, 2019 Wright also agreed with Newsom in the view that overall health-care costs need to drop, and supports policies designed to leverage billions in state contracts to lower drug costs. "We are very supportive of Gov. Newsom's effort to pool the prescription drug-purchasing power of the state to get real savings," he said. Wright also praised the governor's focus on the effects of consolidation in the health-care arena, which he said have led to higher costs and limited patient choice. Suzanne Potter California News Service SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Groups that promote greater access to health care cheered Tuesday February 12 as Gov. Gavin Newsom made the issue a central part of his State of the State address. The governor criticized what

he called the Trump administration's "vandalism" of the Affordable Care Act. Anthony Wright, executive director of the nonprofit Health Access, said he agrees that the state needs to step in where the federal government has retreated.
