St. Simons Island Jekyll Island 404.664.3662 912.634.2118 Tracy@TheCondoHut.com Welcome to St. Simons Island and The Condo Hut! Having grown up on the beaches of South Carolina, I never dreamed I would cheat on my beloved home state until a friend from Atlanta invited me for a weekend … I was immediately smitten. I fell in love with the vibe of an old, laid-back oceanfront village town, now known as “Pier Village” on Mallery Street – (and NO high rises on this beach)! I could truly feel/sense the history here, particularly on the north end of the Island driving at night, and our strong St. Simons Land Trust has given it their all to keep us from becoming over developed. Having specialized in condo sales in Atlanta (ITP) for 5 years, I was ready to make my escape and BREATHE IN SEA AIR VS.

EXHAUST FUMES! Also our lovely residents go out of their way to let you in in traffic vs. cutting you off (and no horn blowing) … SO I bought a British racing green convertible, left skid marks in my old Atlanta driveway and opened The Condo Hut on Mallery Street 17 years ago. Please call, email or text me your search parameters for a condo or single family home on St. Simons Island, Jekyll Island or Brunswick (the mainland), and I would love to help you find the perfect coastal home or occasional hideout! 404-664-3662. • 912-634-2118 • Tracy@ TheCondoHut.com.

It’s Endangered Right Whale Calving Season Off Coastal Georgia

The North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis Muller), one of three species of right whales, is Georgia’s official state marine mammal. It was so designated because the only known calving grounds for the species lie within fifteen miles of the Georgia and north Florida coastline. The North Atlantic right whale is also the world’s most endangered large whale, with fewer than 350 individuals remaining. Scientists estimate that unless threats from ship strikes and fishing-gear entanglements can be substantially reduced, the species will become extinct within 200 years. From November through April about onethird of the world’s right whale population of approx. 450 whales will swim in the waters off Georgia and Northeast Florida. They come to our warmer waters to give birth to their calves before migrating north. Presently, most North Atlantic right whales

26 | HighTideStSimons.com

spend the spring and early summer off the coast of Massachusetts in the southern Gulf of Maine. Later in the summer, they migrate north to the Bay of Fundy, which lies off the coasts of Maine and the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia in the northern Gulf of Maine. Important whale behaviors in the Bay of Fundy include feeding on dense patches of copepods and breeding. In the late fall the near-term pregnant females and a few others migrate south to the relatively calm, cool, and predator-free waters off Georgia and north Florida, where, from December to April, calving occurs. The cows, calves, and others then return north to complete the migratory cycle. Marine biologists photograph unique markings on the heads of the whales to help identify them while the DNR conducts boat and aerial surveys to monitor the location of the whales and alert mariners to reduce the risk of ships striking the whales. Northern Right Whales are the rarest of all the great whales. They were listed as endangered in 1970 and are protected from disturbance and injury by the Endangered

Species Act of 1973 and the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. Georgia also protects right whales under provisions of the state’s Endangered Wildlife Act of 1973. Both the right whale’s name and its endangered status are due to hunting. For more than 900 years, humans hunted this whale because it was “the right whale to kill.” The right whale lived near shore; it swam slowly; when it died, it floated; and when processed, it yielded valuable products, including whale oil for lamps and baleen for corset stays. By the early twentieth century the North Atlantic right whale had been virtually eliminated from the waters near Europe and its distribution reduced to the waters off the East Coast of the United States and southern Canada. In 1935 an international ban on right-whale hunting was initiated, but the number of North Atlantic right whales has not substantially increased since then. While hunting is no longer a threat to right whales, other human activities are. The most dangerous of these are ship strikes (accounting for more than nineteen fatalities since 1970) and entanglement in gill nets, lobster lines, and other fishing gear (more than 60 percent of right whales show signs of entanglement). Other factors include water pollution and disturbance from whale watching and noise. Human-influenced climate change may also affect right whales by changing the distribution and abundance of their prey.

An international and ecumenical effort is under way to reduce these threats to right whales. In the United States some laws have been passed and regulations adopted to help. Measures in effect for Georgia include designation of the coastal waters south of the Altamaha River and out to fifteen miles as a “critical habitat” for the species, ship reporting requirements, restrictions on the use of gill nets, and prohibitions on recreational right-whale watching. Other measures are described in the recovery plans for the North Atlantic right whale prepared by the National Marine Fisheries Service and the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans. You can help protect the Right Whale by being wise stewards of Georgia’s natural environment, and by enjoying our coatal waters responsibly. If boating off Georgia’s coast from December to April, watch for large black objects in the water, just barely clearing the surface. Look for a “V” shaped spout created when the whale breathes. Reduce speed at night and when visibility is otherwise impaired. Notify other vessels in the area if you spot a whale, and report sightings to authorities. In GA, call 1-800-272-8363; In FL, call 1-800-DIAL-FMP. Whales have been spotted between Jekyll and St. Simons Island. So keep a keen eye to the horizon... you just might catch a glimpse of a rare right whale tail!

What is Spanish Moss An image of Spanish moss draping from the trees often reminds people of sultry summer days in the South. Prettier than kudzu, less formal than a palm tree, it is a symbol of nature at its most relaxed. The plant has an incredibly misleading name: Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) is not a moss at all. It is a bromeliad, which means it is in the same taxonomic family as pineapples and some tropical house plants. And, it’s not from Spain. It’s native to Central America, South America, the United States, and the Caribbean. In the U.S., it grows from Texas to Virginia, staying in the moister areas of the South; its preferred habitat is a healthy tree in tropical swampland. Native peoples told French colonists the plant was called Itla-okla , which meant “tree hair.” The

time went by Spanish beard changed to Spanish moss. Although Spanish moss grows on trees, it is not a parasite. It doesn’t put down roots in the tree it grows on, nor does it take nutrients from it. The plant thrives on rain and fog, sunlight, and airborne or waterborne dust and debris. Those who gather Spanish moss are

Play with the locals You feel it the minute you step foot on the Island! St. Simons Island is one of the most charming and friendly places on earth! Get to Know The Marshes of Glynn Your first glimpse of St. Simons Island is across the marshes made famous by poet Sidney Lanier. These natural treasures are the birthplace of much of our sea life. A kayak trip will give you a new appreciation of the natural beauty of the area.

Play A Round... or several St. Simons Island is home to two great golf courses. The award-winning King and Prince Golf Course at The Hampton Club is a Joe Lee design with a group of four signature holes, each gently carved from small marsh islands and accessed by elevated cart bridges. The Sea Palms Golf and Tennis Resort offers 18 holes of extraordinary golf. Enjoy gorgeous marsh views and rare bird sightings while perfecting your swing.

Get in the Water You’re on an island... pick your boat of choice and get in it! Rivers and tidal creeks wind through the marshes and give a new perspective on the island and all the inhabitants we share it with. Kayaking, sailing, charter fishing, paddleboarding... it’s all here and it’s all fun.

50 | HighTideStSimons.com

Hang Out At The Pier Our social hub anchors the south end of the island. Great views of the ocean meet you at every turn. There you will find the St. Simons Lighthouse and Museum, Neptune Park with its oceanside pool, miniature golf course and playground, an oak-shaded picnic area, fishing pier, public library and theatre. Go to the Beach A stroll from the Village to Gould’s Inlet takes you past oceanfront cottages and condos, the famed King & Prince Beach and Golf Resort and the widest beaches on the island at East Beach. It’s about a 3-mile trip, so pace yourself and keep an eye out for dolphins... it’s good luck if you see one.

Explore by Bike...

St.Simons Island has an extensive bike path system that takes the rider along the seashore, through our quaint Pier Village, to the barrier island beaches, past historic sites, through peaceful oak forests and beside scenic golf courses. The favored long ride across the Island is from St. Simons Pier Village on the south end to Fort Frederica on the north end. This ride is about 13.5 miles round trip. Originating near The Lighthouse and Coastal Museum on Beachview Drive, this ride continues up Demere Road through a shaded oak lane, past the Bloody Marsh Battle site, up Frederica Road past numerous shops and restaurants, beside the Sea Palms Golf Course, past Christ Church, and on to Fort Frederica. Many locations on the path provide sweeping marsh vistas and glimpses of fascinating coastal wildlife. The short stretch from the corner of Arnold Road & Ocean Blvd. to East Beach is popular with those on a leisurely trek looking for wildlife. The open marsh and creek area is a feeding ground for egrets, herons, osprey and many other birds. East Beach at Gould’s Inlet is a great place to spot gulls, pelicans, cormorants, and sandpipers. A side trip up the East Beach Causeway crosses a bridge which is a favorite entry spot for kayakers. Both legs of this shorter ride add up to less than three miles round trip. Our map of the Island is on page 79 of this issue. The bike paths are noted with 56 | HighTideStSimons.com

blue dashes. There’s no better place for bike riding than St. Simons Island. So grab that helmet, watch the side streets and take time to see and enjoy the laid-back pace that is St. Simons Island.

natural wonders Can you spot an illusive Ghost Crab? When you catch that movement from the corner of your eye, to find nothing there upon further investigation, you have just encountered the most illusive of our beach inhabitants, the Ghost Crab. It is difficult for our eyes to focus on them they are sand colored and they are FAST! His strong hairy legs carry him along at speeds up to 10mph, making him the fastest of all crustaceans, and he can run sideways, foreward and backward. When the moon is full you might catch sight of him scurrying across the sand facing the

moon. His large eyestalks are capable of 36o degree vision and his vision is so acute he can spot and catch insects in mid-air. What you will see more clearly are the golf ball sized entrance holes to their burrows often surrounded by tiny little crab footprints -- but I wouldn’t stick my hand down there -- the Ghost Crab has strong pincers used for crushing dinner items, and if necessary he will use them on you!

Keep an eye on the waters - it’s good luck to see a Bottlenosed Dolphin! The dolphins you see playing in our waters are Bottlenosed Dolphins, so named because of its smaller rounded nose. This is one of the larger species of dolphins and they can grow to 12 feet and weigh upwards of 1,500 pounds. Bottlenose Dolphins inhabit most of our earthly waters and often swim in groups or pods. It is not unusual to see a mother and baby swimming together as the mother will care for her calf for up to

6 years. They are social and playful and seem to love to frolic in our warm waters. One of the well know attributes of these dolphins is their sonar sense. This allows them to listen to sounds and echos in order to find food and navigate unfamiliar waters even though their eyesight and sense of smell is poor. Look closely when you hear the “chuf ” of a nearby dolphin -- you might see him wink and smile!

St. Simons Island Treasure Hunting

Tree Spirits of St. Simons As you ride around St. Simons Island, look closely at our majestic oak trees. You may be surprised to see one of them looking back at you. What’s that, you ask? Yes, there are

tree Spirits on St. Simons Island! The Tree Spirit, also known as Wood Spirit, Tree Troll, Wood Dryad and other names, is a vivid and powerful character and enjoys a long and noble history. From Greek mythology to fairy tales to the stories of Native Americans, they are common to folklore, in different forms, in almost every culture on earth. They are said to be lords of the forest and all things natural. There are over 20 Tree Spirits engraved into the trees of St.

Simons Island and while some are on private property, many are in public spaces waiting to be discovered. Many carvings are a creation of

70 | HighTideStSimons.com

woodworker Keith Jennings who started the project in the early 1980s. While some believe that the Tree Spirits of St. Simons Island

immortalize the spirits of sailors lost at sea or soldiers killed long ago in the Island’s dense forests, Keith says it isn’t so. According to him, each tree has its own spirit waiting to be unleashed. His work is to find and release. Beginning the summer of 2021, Keith’s son Devon has taken over the carving of the Tree Spirits on the island with the philosophy and care passed along by his dad. Here are a few of the beautiful faces to hunt, and here are hints for hiding places: • Golden Isles Welcome Center 529 Beachview Drive • Mallery Park baseball field on Park Ave • Mallery Park basketball court - Park Ave • On Mallery Street next to Murphy’s Tavern in the Pier Village • On Demere Road at Skylane Drive • In Redfern Village across from Gnat’s • Gascoigne Bluff Park - along the dirt road beside the river, near picnic area • At 3305 Frederica Road in front of Anderson Fine Art Gallery. Keep a photographic record of your finds --

new ones are always popping up -- and see what the spirits tell you of their stories. For additional help locating the Tree Spirits, look for the Tree Spirit symbol on the map on page 79.

It’s about 9 miles round trip and a great way to see St. Simons. Your route will take you past great restaurants and fun shopping!!

All these works are located on the bike path.

SSI Rocks! A short time ago Joy Elliott was online looking for fun ways to entertain her grandchildren when she found Lakeland Rocks. Lakeland Florida was encouraging people to paint rocks and hide them around town for others to find and enjoy -- painting, hiding, finding -- all fun activities. She posted on St. Simons Live Update “wonder if we could do something like this here?” SSI Rocks was up and running! Their Facebook page, SSIrocks, now has over 3,000 members! Post your creations and your finds on Instagram at #ssirocks. Further investigation of how this movement began led to The Kindness Rocks Project created by Megan Murphy of Cape Cod. “Living near the ocean, I walk the beach daily. Losing my parents at a young age meant losing my advisers, my sounding board, and my role models. During difficult or stressful moments in my life, I found myself looking for “signs” on my morning walk, such as a heart shaped rock or a piece of sea glass. I perceived these small beach treasures as “signs” or as a divine message and the random inspiration I needed to signify that things would be OK. Maybe I wasn’t the only one looking for such signs!” says Megan. Thus The Kindness Rocks Project was born and now has worldwide members. Back on St. Simons, SSIrocks is flourishing

- and we want to encourage you to participate! It goes like this: You paint - hide - hunt - post - rehide - keep (your favorites) - rock on!! With identification on the back - #ssirocks - you can spread the love of St. Simons Island around the island and across the land. All you need to get started is rocks and paint, or Sharpies. On the island check out Ace Hardware or Strother Lumber in the Village for rocks and sealer. St. Simons Drugs and Ace should have paint and pens... and you’re off and running!

Downtown Brunswick’s Exceptional Main Street

What makes downtown Brunswick so special? The true spirit of historic downtown Brunswick is found in the creative, forwardthinking business owners who make up this unique blend of shops, galleries and truly amazing restaurants, cafes and watering-holes. This is a small, welcoming community made up of family and friends. Some are generations old, some new to the community, all are excited to be part of the history of yesterday and the renaissance of today. Historic Downtown Brunswick is considered one of Georgia’s Exceptional Main Streets through Main Street American and Georgia Main Street. Only 18 other towns in Georgia are awarded this distinction. Friday. Bikes aren’t your thing? You can also visit discoverbrunswick.com/tours-stay for a self-guiding walking tour map of Brunswick and self-guiding tour of Oak Grove Cemetery, established in 1838. This cemetery is said to have around 200 Civil War soldiers, both Confederate and Union. To understand the history of Brunswick, take a stroll through its Signature Squares. The town was established in 1771 as a colonial port of entry. It has always been a bridge between land and sea. The city was designed using the “Oglethorpe Plan”, similar to the plan for Savannah. Brunswick’s plan highlights a grid-type design punctuated by 14 squares, some sizeable, some quite small, all created with intent. Signature Squares of Brunswick, a non-profit preservation organization, was founded in 2005 to reclaim and beautify the original colonial parks and squares in the Old Town district of the city. Today, many of the squares are still in use as community gathering spots or parks. Still others are waiting for the day when their true potential

wick will be realized. This is also where you will find tree lined streets and restored Victorian era homes. For a map of the squares and to learn more about the individual Signature Squares and how you can help preserve them, visit SignatureSquares.org. You can’t miss the splendid spire and beauty of Old City Hall. Construction began in 1886 from an architectural design by Alfred Eichberg, and was completed in 1889, with the installation of the clock/bell tower in 1893. The architectural style is “Richardsonian Romanesque”, with Queen Anne parallels. Massive in stature, with the unusual addition of Italianate brackets, Romanesque architecture was the style of choice for the majority of public buildings built in the United States during this period. Elaborate terra cotta friezes decorate our Old City Hall clock tower and side entries, while the corner columns adorned with gargoyles gaze welcomingly at you and your guests.

Located on the East River in Historic Downtown Brunswick is Mary Ross Waterfront Park. The park features The Liberty Ship Memorial Plaza, where you can view a scale model of a Liberty Ship, like those built in Brunswick shipyards during World War II. Other attractions include an outdoor musical playscape, staged pavilion and a specialty market every Saturday. It is a lovely spot to watch the sun set or to see huge oceangoing ships from around the world plus picturesque shrimp boats.

early 1900’s. Oftentimes these glass floats would accidentally detach from their nets and drift onto the shore, becoming beautiful keepsakes for whomever stumbled upon them. Finding one was rare and quickly became a game. Exploring Jekyll Island while searching for these these beautiful glass orbs is a great way to spend a day - or two. They make unique treasures to take home as a token of your trip to the Golden Isles. Want a sneak peek for where to look? The Beach Buddies hide the globes in public places where they can be easily found. Look in general areas such as the Beach Village, the Historic District, Great Dunes Beach Park, and other common locations. Just know, the globes are not

hidden in the dunes, the marshes, golf courses, or on residential properties. Here's a map to help with your search. If you’re lucky enough to have found a plastic replica, you can bring it in to the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center and exchange it for the real deal! Take your globe to the Jekyll Island Guest Information Center at 901 Downing Musgrove Causeway, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Monday-Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Sunday. There, you’ll exchange it for the beautiful glass globe that matches the numbered tag in your plastic find. You will complete a claim form, provide photo ID, and receive your beautiful keepsake. A photo ID is required to claim your prize. Only one Island Treasure can be claimed per household, per year. Happy Hunting!!!

Visit Jekyll Island

Destination

Jekyll Island’s natural beauty has long drawn guests to its shores. From the early settlers to the Jekyll Island Club millionaires to the thousands of guests who arrive today, this island is a retreat of history and wonder. With miles of beach, marsh, and maritime forest, Jekyll Island is a haven of discovery. Around every corner, a new adventure awaits.

Beaches

Jekyll Island’s 10 miles of unspoiled beaches are perfect for sunbathing, swimming, exploring, leisurely walks and invigorating runs. Because Jekyll Island is a barrier island, the motion of the sea here is constantly shifting the landscape and depositing unique shells. Great Dunes Park is one of the mostpopular beaches on the island. This 20-acre beachfront has several picnic pavilions, a deck for activities, play areas for children, bocce ball and volleyball courts, and public beach access with restrooms and showers. Located adjacent to the Jekyll Island Convention Center, there is ample parking and quick, easy access to other island amenities and lodging. Driftwood Beach, on the north end of the island, is consistently voted one of America’s “Ten Most Romantic Beaches” and has been featured by USA TODAY as one of the best southern beaches for a weekend escape. 80 | HighTideStSimons.com

Glory Beach, toward the island’s south end, gives island guests a chance to walk where Hollywood celebrities once performed for the cameras. A shooting location for the 1989 Civil War film classic, “Glory,” this boardwalk was specifically built for filming several of the movie’s classic Civil War battle scenes. South Dunes, located along S. Beachview Drive, provides elevated boardwalk beach access over 20-foot high dunes. The park offers picnic tables and grills, open-air and screened-in picnic pavilions, public restrooms, dog bag stations, an observation deck, and a freshwater pond. St. Andrews is a short walk from Jekyll Point, the southern-most point in the island. Rolling waves, pristine sand dunes, and leaping dolphins are common sights at this oceanfront picnic area, which is also popular for birding and shelling. The picnic area also features a two-story wildlife viewing platform and the historical marker, the Wanderer Memorial.
