HIGHLAND “Our purpose is to be the hands and feet of Jesus”

esus said in John 20:21, "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you."Highland is a local church, which is an expression of the universal Body of Christ. We seek to represent the Lord Jesus Christ in Queens, NY. But we are also part of the larger universal community of those who follow Christ worldwide. We exist to exalt the One True God in all His sovereignty, beauty, goodness, holiness, mercy and love through Jesus Christ our Lord. We seek to empower, equip, edify and encourage fellow believers to experience a life of faith. Jesus said in John 20:21, "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you." We are a sent people, responding to the spiritual needs of the whole community without discrimination and with compassion. We therefore seek to engage, evangelize and energize our community - those of faith and those without, for God through Christ. We love God and we seek to love each other as He loves us in Christ. Jesus said "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” We focus on the truth of God's Word that brings salvation, grace, peace and freedom through Christ and we desire to speak this truth in love. We believe that God’s Word uniquely and infallibly reveals God's plan and how to live out that plan, individually and collectively.

Jesus said, "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you.” As the Body of Christ, this local church expresses our identity, who we are and whose we are. We are a community of people who have been redeemed through Christ. Through Him and by Him, God our Father is the center and focus of our life and community. We believe that our Creator and God desires to be known and experienced by all. And through Christ He becomes our Father who desires to draw us into intimate and meaningful relationship with Him. As a local church we value His awesome presence and are passionate in pursuing His fellowship. Jesus said, "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you." We are a family unit. We are called into relationship with each other. There is diversity within this body and yet we find our unity and mutual love in Christ. Through Christ there is unity in diversity that eliminates devaluation, deprivation and declination of one another. We are a rich 'tapestry' of people from different races, languages, personalities, countries, cultures, color, talents and perspectives, brought together in Christ. We seek to learn what it means to be a family that endeavors to appreciate, acknowledge and accept one another. We recognize that each member of this local church called Highland has unique gifts and ministries. Therefore we seek to work together in cooperating and networking as a team. God made this local church to be healthy and grow spiritually, emotionally, physically and in every other area of our lives. Therefore we seek to do our part to strengthen, stabilize and support each other. Jesus said, "As the Father sent me, so I am sending you." This expresses our purpose, what we do. We are the hands and feet of Jesus. Therefore, we seek to go and do all by the power of the Holy Spirit, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom and demonstrating Christ's love, mercy and healing as we serve our community. This local body becomes a visible expression and presence of Christ in our community and across the world. We seek to be "Christians" or "anointed", understanding that there is intrinsic value in every person and striving to be a community where the mangled, marred and marginalized can begin to experience salvation, deliverance and freedom in Christ. (LK. 4:18-19)

reward you openly. (Mat. 6:3,4) When you give anonymously, you trade man’s admiration for God’s approval. Which would you rather have in your own time of need? People may forget your kindness or fail to show appreciation, but God, who never reneges on a promise, has said that He will reward you in a way that is evident to those around you.

By: Pastor Valerie Surrett, Worship Pastor

The True Spirit of GIVING “When you give a little, you only make room to receive a little” he bright lights of Christmas will soon be all around us. The wonderful flavors and aromas of Thanksgiving feasts will fill the air. We’ll shop till we drop; we’ll plan and prepare. Everything builds up to a thunderous crescendo-then the New Year arrives and all is quiet. If we are not careful, all we will have to show for our efforts are dissatisfaction, maxed-out charge accounts and an expanded waistline. We hear it said over and over that Christmas is a season for giving, and that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Why, then, do we sometimes feel so empty after giving so much? Perhaps we need to reexamine our giving to see if we are really doing it according to God’s plan. Here are some ways Jesus taught us to give that will cause us to be truly blessed. 1) Give anonymously. But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself

Fall 2014 Fall / Winter 2014

2) Give to those who cannot repay you. But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just. (Luke 14:13,14) When you give to get, you get what you get, and that’s it. Sometimes you come out on the better end of the deal, and sometimes you don’t. When you give even though you know there is nothing in it for you, you trade earthly reciprocity for heavenly reward. When God gives back to you, you always receive dividends that are “out of this world”. 3) Give generously. Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you. (Luke 6:38) When you give a little, you only make room to receive a little. When you choose a bigger container to give with, you give God a bigger container to fill. In 2 Corinthians 9:10, we read that God provides both seed for you to sow and bread for you to eat. When you give according to God’s plan, it is up to Him to see to it that your needs are met. Whom would you rather rely on-yourself or Him? 4) Give of yourself. The most awesome gift ever given is when Jesus gave Himself for us. We often make the mistake of trying to fulfill intangible wants and needs with material things. We spend money on people who really need our time, attention and love. We buy things for ourselves, thinking that we can fill voids in our hearts and souls that only God can fill. Let’s fire our unlicensed “retail therapists” this year and find new ways to demonstrate the true spirit of giving this Christmas.

We also have youth catechism classes which are religious instruction for the youth. The children learn about the love of Jesus by exploring Bible stories in both the Old and New Testament.

By: Pastor Hantz Andre , Assistant Pastor

BIBLICAL EDUCATION t Highland Church, we try to provide an environment where children can grow in the knowledge of God’s Word and thereby enrich their lives and be of better service to their Heavenly Father. It begins with Children’s Church (grade K-6) on Sunday mornings from 11:00 AM to 12:15 PM. We do understand that it is the parent’s primary responsibility to instruct their children in God’s Word. While we can never replace the parent’s role, we provide help at all stages and we begin early. We want the children to have a positive attitude towards church and more importantly towards God. We provide age appropriate material for each class.

Fall / Winter 2014

The classes are divided into age groups and taught by Minister Mary Daniels along with other caring teachers. The classes consist of Q & A session, skits, multimedia learning tools and other interactive ways to commit God’s Word to memory. Just as with Children Church, the parents do not have to be members for the children to attend classes. Classes are offered on Saturdays from 12 Noon to 2:00 PM for ages 7 to 15. As the children become young adults, along with others, they have the opportunity to take the discipleship classes to get a deeper understanding of God’s Word. This is intended to help the Believer have basic understanding of some doctrines, and assist them in their walk with Christ. They will also learn how to share their faith. These classes meet on Sunday mornings at 9:30 AM. There is also an adult Bible class that meets on Sundays at 9:30 AM. And for those who still seek further knowledge of God’s Word and a deeper understanding, there is the Highland Bible Institute (HBI). These classes are of a higher level. They run about 6 to 8 weeks and meet at three different sessions during the year. Classes are usually on Sunday mornings from 9:30 AM to 10:25 AM.
