KILLIECRANKIE VISITOR CENTRE. This magnificent wooded gorge is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Although tranquil now, on 27th July 1689 a Jacobite army led by Bonnie Dundee defeated Government forces. The exhibition tells the story of the Pass of Killiecrankie and it’s abundant wildlife.

BIRNAM OAK: Immortalised in Shakespeare’s Macbeth it stands some 27 metres (90 feet) high, the last survivor of the legendary Birnam Wood. The witches’ prophecy literally came true, when Malcolm’s army camouflaged itself with branches from the great wood and took by surprise Macbeth’s stronghold at Dunsinane. Arboretum Internationale has carried out tree-work operations, with careful attention the Oak should thrive and may be last another 400 years.

THE HERMITAGE. On the banks of the River Braan, the Hermitage has been visited and admired for nearly 250 years and continues to draw people from all over the world. An attractive woodland walk leads along the river banks through mixed woodland to the picturesque folly of Ossian’s Hall. Each season offers something different here but the autumn colours are particularly striking. OPEN all year. Situated beside the A9, 0.5 mls north of Dunkeld and Inver turnings.

NEIL GOW’S OAK one of ten trees short listed for the European Tree of the Year 2014 Award. Neil Gow born here in Inver, Strathbraan in 1727, the son of a weaver, became a renowned fiddler and regarded as the father of the Strathspey and Reel music. Neil Gow’s Tree a gnarled oak adjoining his croft is where he used play, and his friend the 4th Duke of Atholl used to listen from across the river. Located on the south bank of the River Tay, an easy walk, part of the Dunkeld and Birnam Walks Leaflet

DUNKELD AND BIRNAM WALKS LEAFLET. Highlights eight way-marked trails, including a map, covering a total of nearly 36 miles of paths and tracks in the countryside surrounding Dunkeld, Birnam, Inver and Fungarth. The countryside is noted for its flora, places of interest and associations with the famous fiddler Neil Gow, the writer Beatrix Potter and the naturalist Charles Macintosh. DUNKELD CATHEDRAL The medieval building sits on the banks of the River Tay, the C13th choir is used as the parish church. The architecture spans C13th to C15th The Tower was built in 1469. There are some rare Medieval carved stones, and also a stone from the first church, showing a man on horseback blowing a horn and holding a spear. Behind the alter there is the grave of King Robert II’s son, the Wolf of Badenoch.

There is a small museum. Historic Scotland.

DUNKELD. In 1689 Jacobite forces laid siege to the town, resulting in much destruction. The buildings of today’s town date from this time. The charming exteriors of 20 houses in Cathedral and High Streets have been carefully restored by The National Trust for Scotland. Kenmore KENMORE VILLAGE, ‘big-head land’, grew up around the strategically important ferry crossing where the river Tay leaves Loch Tay. In 1572 The Laird of the time Colin Campbell, sponsored the buildings of the inn adjacent to the ferry, as he wanted an ale house more conveniently situated for himself and his family. It is probably Scotland’s oldest working inn.

FALLS OF ACHARN: This walk has some really good views of Loch Tay and the falls themselves are special. Consists of two water falls, the upper and lower falls, a Hermits Cave (may be a Victorian folly) and a viewing platform. Particularly spectacular when the burn is in spate. Park in the village of Acharn, just near the signpost “Falls of Acharn, Circular Walk”, it is about 1 mile in length, straight up steepish climb and back down to the village.

WHAT IS A CRANNOG? Perthshire is home to more than 40 ancient loch-dwellings, or crannogs, found across Scotland and Ireland and dating from the early Iron Age some 2,500 years ago. Highland Perthshire has more than 18 crannogs in Loch Tay alone, built to take advantage of good lowland farmland and access to trading networks via the River Tay. Who owned these enigmatic homes?

Underwater archaeological evidence shows that Taysides’s loch-dwellers were sophisticated farmers and traders who lived on the loch in peace for several generations. THE FORTINGALL YEW TREE estimated as being between 3,000 and 5,000 years old. Acknowledged as Europe’s oldest tree. In 1769 the tree’s girth was 56ft (over 17 metres). Tradition has it that Pontius Pilate was born here whilst his father was on a mission from Caesar to a Caledonii King. The Yew tree is in Fortingall church yard. OPEN all year, free entry.

CROFT MORAIG ‘Mary’s croft’, is a stone circle comprised of 8 standing stones in an oval setting at about 7m diameter followed by a second circle of 12 standing stones about 12m in diameter.

Excavations in 1965 found pottery of local Neolithic origin dating to 300BC. Access is through the gate into the field. Explanation plaques tell you the whole story. Located in a farm field on the left of the road on the A827 from Aberfeldy to Kenmore.

There are two Aberfeldy walks, including the famous ‘Birks of Aberfeldy’, a Weem Walk up the Rock of Weem with a good view, Camserney takes you up to old Shielings, there are four walks in and around Kenmore.

This excellent leaflet can be purchased from the Tourist Information Centre in Aberfeldy.

VILLAGE OF DULL. The Village of Dull, ‘Meadow’, had a religious college founded by the monks of Iona in early Christian times. One of the original four ancient stone crosses stands at the junction of the two roads leading to the village. The present church is owned by the Scottish Knights Templar, its ancient burial ground is to the east of the church.

The village is linking with the town of BORING in Oregon in the United States.

THE BIRKS OF ABERFELDY, inspired Robert Burns to write his poem of the same name after a visit in August 1787. The circular 1.5 mile path (allow 1.5 to 2hrs) follows the path alongside the Moness Burn. What you see today is the product of the past, not the recent past but of millions of years. Waterfalls are a feature of these hanging valleys where side streams drop down steep slopes. From the centre of Aberfeldy, take the A826 road to Crief for 200yds, the Birks of Aberfeldy is on your right. Excellent leaflet and map available in the car park.

MOULIN (maohlinn is an Old Gaelic term meaning ‘smooth rounded hill’). It has been an important settlement for some two thousand years and claims to be the most ancient settlement of the upper Tay Valley. In the graveyard there is a 12th C crusader’s gravestone with a two handed sword carved on its surface. There is a ‘Jong’ tree to which offenders were shackled. Pitlochry PITLOCHRY WALKS LEAFLET, including a map, provides details of nearly 41 miles of paths and tracks, offering a wide choice of distances, gradients and scenery to suit a variety of tastes, levels of ability and fitness. The walks radiate out into the countryside over 18 square miles, encompassing both sides of the Rivers Garry and Tummel, following river, burn and lochside, passing shaded woodland and climbing steep hillsides with panoramic views. Available from the Tourist Information Centre and many businesses in the town.

PITLOCHRY DAM AND FISH LADDER WALK This short walk, taking 30-45 mins, starts in the middle of Pitlochry. It goes down and along the River Tummel, through the ancient settlement of Port-nacraig to the fish ladder and observation room, over the dam wall and back into Pitlochry. Along the route are the Festival Theatre, and The Port-na-craig Inn.

PITLOCHRY IN BLOOM is responsible for the floral displays in town and events such as the famous Green Park Hotel Coffee Morning in June and Secret Gardens Day, (local gardens opened to the public on the 1st Sun in Aug). 2013 was the Sesquicentennial of the Highland Mainline Railway and the Railway Station was re-furbished with the MacFarlane Fountain short-listed for a Railway Heritage Trust Award. Since the melinium, Pitlochry has had a New Year’s Day Street party. Each year some four to five thousand people dance in Pitlochry’s main street to tunes played by a ceilidh band, with mulled wine, hot sausage rolls and cups of delicious soup provided by the community. The event runs from 1pm to 4pm every new year’s day. Donations and a raffle fund the event year to year.

PITLOCHRY DAM was constructed between 1947 and 1951, creating Loch Faskally some 5km in length. In order to allow on average some 5,000 salmon to pass upstream each year, a 311m long fish ladder was created incorporating a viewing window in 1 of the 3 resting pools. THE FALLS OF BRUAR. Long have the Falls drawn visitors - travellers, poets, artists, nobility and royalty - to view the wild grandeur of the Falls and their surroundings. In 1787, Robert Burns wrote a poem pleading with the Duke of Atholl to plant its banks with trees. Only after Burns’ death in 1796 did the Duke plant 60,000 larch and Scotch pines. In 1844, the mature trees enchanted Queen Victoria and Prince Albert on their visit. The well marked route is just over one mile long. Open all year. North of Pitlochry on B8079.

ATHOLL HIGHLANDERS PARADE. The Atholl Highlanders are Europe’s only legal private army, remnants of the old Highland way of life, when every clan chief had his own army made up of local clans folk. Today the Atholl Highlanders are a purely ceremonial regiment; they are responsible for the defence of Blair Castle, the surrounding estate and its inhabitants. At the end of May each year they parade before the Duke for his annual inspection.

GATEWAY TO THE CAIRNGORMS or the ‘Blair Atholl Information Hub’ as it is known locally, is testimony to many local people’s hard work over the last 10 years and has provided a real focal point for visitors to the area.

The old Blair Atholl school kitchen is today’s Visitor Information Centre, where you can discover all kinds of information, from walk and cycle booklets guiding you to the many fabulous routes across Atholl Estates land. You can also learn about the local wildlife with quizzes & games for the young.

The old Blair Atholl School is the home to the Atholl Country Life Museum which contains much of the area’s history. Food in the Park is where you can buy Fish and Chips to cup of coffee and a cake and Pizzas, also there is Bike Hire and public toilets with an excellent free car park.

SOLDIERS OF KILLIECRANKIE To mark the 325th anniversary of the Battle of Killiecrankie, the local community have organised a special commemorative weekend. Something that has never been done before at Killiecrankie. You will be able to meet Bonnie Dundee’s Cavalry who will tell you of their part in the battle along with cavalry demonstrations. There will also be both Government and Jacobite troops, a living history camp and tours of the battlefield. The period dressed Battlefield Tour Guides will explain what happened 325 years ago, along with anecodotes associated with both the Governement and Jacobite troops.
