Curriculum Spotlight - PE
from Issue 30
Mr Shirtcliffe
Sport and Physical activity have always been passions of mine, so I feel extremely fortunate to be part of such a vibrant and enthusiastic PE department at Highfields.

Getting students active and engaged in sport is one of the most amazing things to witness. The journey that our students go on is one which they can all succeed not just the sporty types, one where they will develop not just physically but mentally and socially. Our journey from year 7 takes us through fundamental activities, outdoor adventures, wrestling, fencing and judo, athletic challenges, fitness and the traditional sports. We do this using the Head, Heart and Hands curriculum so that students can develop a wide range of concepts and skills which they will have for life, empathy, support and resilience to name a few. The journey then goes into KS4 where each student applies the concepts and knowledge into performing, lifelong fitness and hopefully a lifelong love of sport. With the opportunity to then take study further by studying the academic PE options via GCSE or BTEC Sport.
The enrichment opportunities are broad in PE with our sports leadership academy going from strength to strength and the Duke of Edinburgh award allowing students to gain valuable skills for life.
One of the best parts for me is the extra-curricular clubs where students come for the love of sport or to be with their peers, and it is made especially nice when the venue for several of these clubs is the new Astroturf or one of the resurfaced tennis courts.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who has attended any of the extra-curricular clubs or indeed competed for school in fixtures or events.
