School Games Mark update Youth Sport Trust

The 2019 academic year saw the School Games Mark Awards reach over 10,000 Schools. With the 2020 School Games Mark window due to open in less than two weeks, the team at the Youth Sport Trust working closely with Sport England, has worked hard to consult with a range of stakeholders on the approach to take in light of COVID-19, school closures and social distancing measures.

The consultation has included School Games Organisers, Headteachers and importantly a sample of schools and PE leads who in 2019 achieved Bronze, Silver and Gold School Games Mark. While there were, of course, a number of schools that felt they had the relevant information to report on two terms worth of work, the overriding feedback from the Headteachers we spoke to was that the priority for staff during the summer term was to cater for the immediate needs of students while also preparing for school returning to a new normal.

With this information in mind, the decision has been made to pause the 2020 School Games Mark; as a result schools will retain their 2019 School Games Mark Award.

We recognise that for some schools this news will come as a disappointment. In recognition of this, and based on the feedback from those involved in consultation we are working on the development of a Badge/Certificate that SGOs can present to schools in recognition of their involvement in the virtual programmes over the summer term.

We would like to thank you all for all the work you are doing to support young people during these difficult times.

Youth Sport Trust Consultation

Highfields is a Health and Wellbeing School and Mrs Allen will be taking part in the Youth Sport Trust consultation next week to ensure health and wellbeing continues to be at the heart of Highfields. Further feedback will be given in future newsletters.

Road to Wimbledon 2020 Tennis competition cancellation

The Lawn Tennis Association have confirmed that all stages of the 2020 Road to Wimbledon competition is now cancelled (this includes the venue stage, regional qualifiers, county finals and the national finals).

The decision to cancel the Road to Wimbledon competition was made in full consultation with the All England Lawn Tennis Club (full statement can be accessed here).

The ongoing worldwide challenge presented by the coronavirus has meant it is not possible to safely stage the majority of qualifying events either here in the UK or overseas, which form a significant part of the competition. In addition to this there are several challenges with holding the national finals at Wimbledon including the uncertainty around medical provision and government guidelines around large gatherings of people.

Further details on the 2021 event will be viewable on www.LTA.org.uk/roadtowimbledon later on this year.

Highfields Sports Leadership Awards evening update

As you are aware we had to cancel the scheduled Sports Leaders annual awards evening due to the lockdown. We would like to rearrange another evening once school is reopened to enable us to celebrate the amazing successes of our leaders and present our certificates and we will keep you updated when this will be.

The awards that sports leaders tutors would have presented at the evening will stand as 2019/2020 and the new academic year 2020/21 will begin in September with new challenges for students to be considered for awards.

The certificates for the current year 12 students will be available should they be required for university accreditation (eg the level 3 award is worth 16 UCCAS points).

In the meantime, please continue to fill in your booklets.

#ThisIsPE – supporting parents/carers to teach PE at home

Yorkshire Sport Foundation and leading national organisations (including afPE) are working with physical educators from across the country to support parents/carers to teach PE at home.

Short two-minute videos, endorsed by the Department for Education are being posted that will show parents/carers (and teachers) free, fun and easy to follow PE activities for the whole family to enjoy together.

Each #ThisIsPE video will focus on a different aspect of the National Curriculum. The videos, delivered by qualified teachers, will help children and young people to continue their skill development in PE during this period when we are having to stay at home, to save lives.

Videos are being posted at 1pm on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday. You don’t need to be in PE kit and you don’t need sports equipment. All of the videos will use things that you can find around the home.

To view all the lessons in one place a #ThisIsPE YouTube playlist has been created.
