Your child should have made appointments with teaching staff, but if they have not yet done so, please urge them to do this on Monday.

At the meeting you will have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with subject teachers. We would encourage you to bring your son/daughter to this meeting so that they can contribute to the discussion.

If you have real concerns in a particular subject, please do not hesitate to contact the member of staff at a later date if you are unsuccessful on the evening. The evening will end at 7pm promptly.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you.

Easter Concert Cancellation

It is with regret that the music department has decided to postpone this year’s Easter concert scheduled for 24 March due to staffing issues.

We are very proud of our musical talent and consider the concerts and excellent showcase of this and will endeavour to find a suitable time for the concert later in the academic year.

Immunisations information for year 9 parents/carers:

The Immunisation Team will attend Highfields School on 6 May 2020 to vaccinate year 9 girls with their second HPV Human Papilloma Vaccine dose.

The team already have consent for year 9 girls, so there is no requirement to give consent again.

Further information can be found on the NHS website below: http://www.derbyshireschoolnurses.org.uk/parents/immunisations/immunisation-dates

Please note: The Immunisation Team have stated that legally students can self-consent on the day if they are 13 years old and assessed as competent by NHS staff members, however this creates much more work for staff and the team and they have stressed it is important to complete the e-consent as soon as notification has been sent.

Coronavirus update

As you would expect we continue to act on incoming information from the Department for Education and from Public Health England. We are following all available advice, particularly around hygiene and are meeting regularly to ensure that we are prepared for all emerging eventualities. We can confirm that we still have no known cases of coronavirus in our school community.

We are resisting the temptation to send you detailed communications because they are likely to be subject to change as we are overtaken by changing guidance or events. For now, please reassure children that business is continuing as usual and that all precautions are being taken to protect them and their community. We will update you further when we need to.

Thank you for your continued support, for communicating with us about yours or your family’s circumstances and for allowing us the time and space to focus on our planning.

Latest advice on Coronavirus

Exam preparation and Ofqual advice

We recognise that students, parents, schools and colleges will be concerned about the possible impact of coronavirus on the 2020 summer exam series. Ofqual’s advice at this time is to continue to prepare for exams and other assessments as normal.

Ofqual continues to work closely with exam boards, other regulators and the Department for Education to plan for a range of scenarios, as the public would expect. Our overriding priorities are fairness to students this summer and keeping disruption to a minimum.

It is still many weeks until exams start and we will issue updated advice if necessary, giving schools and colleges as much notice as possible.

The latest updates from Ofqual can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/updated-statement-on-coronavirus

The importance of hygiene

Personal hygiene is the most important way we can tackle COVID-19, especially washing hands more; and the catch it, bin it, kill it strategy for those with coughs and sneezes. Wash your hands more often for 20 seconds with soap and hot water.

In addition to handwashing before eating and after sneezing, both children and staff should also wash hands after using toilets and after travelling on public transport.

Department for Education coronavirus helpline

The Department for Education coronavirus helpline is now available to answer questions about COVID19 relating to education and children’s social care. Staff, parents and young people can contact this helpline as follows:

Dates for your diary

Term 4:

Y7 Parent consultation evening - Tuesday 17 March 2020 4-7pm, Lumsdale

Evening of Dance – Wednesday 18 March 2020 7pm, Starkholmes

Sports Leaders Awards Evening – Thursday 2 April 2020 6-8pm, Lumsdale

Evening of Dance

Highfields School proudly presents the Evening of Dance on Wednesday 18 March 2020.

It will be a celebration of the performing arts showcasing multiple different styles and variations of dance.

In previous years this celebratory evening has been a great way of bringing everyone together through dance and we hope this year’s event will be no different.

Dance is an amazing way to stay healthy, build confidence and develop new skills whilst remaining fun, enjoyable and fulfilling. It is a great release and form of expressionism which we believe should be encouraged. The evening will be a great opportunity for students at Highfields to show off their hard work and determination, giving us the opportunity to show how collaborating and learning from each other, in an inclusive and supporting environment has been beneficial and made possible through the performing arts.

Students from all year groups (years 7-13) are looking forward to performing and sharing their own choreography and love for dance with you. The event will take place at 7pm at Highfields lower site Starkholmes with adult tickets £5 and concessions £3.

Everyone is welcome and we really hope to see you there to join in the fantastic evening!
