Voice of sport meeting

The monthly voice of sport meeting took place on Friday 31 January that focused on our new monthly foci for sport.

Step into Sport conference 2020

Six of our year 9 students (Eve, Ruby, Seline, Harvey, Stephen and Callum) attended the Step into Sport conference at St Mary’s in Chesterfield alongside other students from Tupton, Shirebrook, St Mary’s and Bolsover.

Led by England boxing champion, Rachel McKenzie, students also took part in tennis, volleyball and boccia activities during the morning session. Students played and supported each other leading activities. In the afternoon they devised an action plan to bring some ideas back in to school to encourage others in their year group to take part. They presented their plans to other schools encouraging their leadership skills. We loved seeing Mr Pemberton who now teaches at Bolsover.

SSP sports hall athletics finals Mrs Allen & Mr Shirtcliffe

Highfields hosted a very successful sports hall athletics competition on Wednesday 5 February with our Derbyshire Dales schools. The event saw over 120 students taking part in active competition, supported by sports leaders who had been trained by Mike Frost from England Athletics.

Cluster schools taking part in the large school’s event in the morning were All Saints (Highfields cluster) along with Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School cluster, Lady Manners cluster and Anthony Gell cluster schools. Well done to All Saints who came first and will go on to the county finals, Parkside came second with Wirksworth third and Darley Dale in fourth place.

The afternoon invited small schools to take part with students from Lea and Wessington from Highfields cluster along with schools from Queen Elizabeth’s, Lady Manners and Antony Gell clusters. Congratulations to Osmaston who gained first place and will go on to the county finals. Second place went to Turnditch, Eyam were

third, in fourth place was Hulland, Lea were fifth, Baslow sixth and Wessington came seventh.

After school the secondary school year 7 and 8 competition took place. Students from both year groups competed from Highfields with some excellent performances and results. Highfields finished fourth, Anthony Gell third with Lady Manners second and Queen Elizabeth’s taking first place. Although we didn’t win overall all of our students did Highfields proud once again.

Well done and thank you to everyone involved and a massive thank you to our amazing leaders and staff who allowed the competition to run so smoothly.

Girls football against St Mary’s Mr Shirtcliffe

On Friday 31 January both our under 16 and under 13 girls’ football teams took to the field away at St Mary’s Church Academy, Chesterfield. Both teams represented Highfields in the best possible way, they worked hard and played some excellent football.

The under 16 team was made up of year 9, 10 and 11 students who all came together to produce an excellent performance. We even had two of our year 8 students come on for the last 5 minutes contributing to our goal. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 but that didn’t dampen our spirits.

The under 13 team emerged victorious winning 5-2 and were excellent from goalkeeper to the forwards. All 16 players played in the 9 aside game. Well done as we look forward to the next round.
