On a beautiful Highfields afternoon on Monday, our under 15 girls competed in the 3rd round of the English Schools National Cup against Ashfield School.
The game started off pretty even with both sides playing some excellent passing football leading to both sides having scoring opportunities. Mid-way through the first half we managed to break the deadlock with a solid strike from Keeley, then the second from Erin and the third also from Erin came in quick succession.
At half time the girls reflected well on the first half making slight changes to try to keep ahead. The second half Ashfield came back into it and managed to score a great goal, firing into the top corner leaving Maddie no chance, luckily this was only a consolation goal as immediately after Ruby made an excellent run down the right hand side and played a wonderful ball which was finished off by Keeley.
A great afternoon of football played in a great spirit by both teams, excellent work girls, onto the next round.
We are Highfields!
Year 8 football - Highfields vs Glossopdale
Mr Joel Searson
On Wednesday our Y8 boys played their 2nd round fixture in the Derbyshire Schools Cup after progressing against Frederick Gent School a couple of weeks earlier. The visitors for this tie were Glossopdale School, who made the hour long journey.
Highfields started the game extremely brightly, carving open a number of chances in the early stages. This early pressure paid off as Ethan broke into the box before skipping past two defenders to blast the ball into the roof of the goal. This goal seemed to wake Glossopdale up and into action, as they pushed to get themselves an equaliser… which came through a penalty just a couple of minutes after Highfields had gone into the lead. With the momentum swinging Glossopdale’s way, they then went onto grab another couple of goals before the half time whistle to put themselves firmly in control of the game.
Second half Highfields came out with a positive frame of mind to try and get themselves back into the game. We played some fantastic football in the 2nd half, but a very resilient and solid Glossopdale defence made it difficult to get anything out of. As a result, the Y8s unfortunately bowed out of the competition, but with their heads held high following a good footballing performance against a tough physical side.
Good luck to Glossopdale in the 3rd round!
Year 9 boys vs Tupton in DSFA Cup
Mr Waller
The year 9 boys team played their second game of the school year so far and faced familiar opposition as we faced Tupton Hall again, with no more than a month separating the two games.
Albeit a score line of 7-1 to Tupton seems bleak on first glance, positives can be drawn when comparing this game to our previous encounter which finished 9-0 to the opposition. The team not only defended well at times, limiting Tupton to far less goals than they are capable of, but they also attacked well too.
Felix scored our one and only goal but the team could have easily grabbed 4 goals in the game from chances that unfortunately were not taken; this is a drastic improvement from our first game where the team all admitted we had no chances on goal at all.
The standout player on the day was Felix who deserves a special mention not only for his goal but for his overall performance and desire to win the ball back.
