Quality of Life — Something to Think About
I
was at the Mojave Narrows Regional Park for my husband’s company picnic a few months ago. As I was watching my grandson having fun on the playground equipment, I looked around and noticed the bits and pieces of trash on the ground. Well, I wasn’t doing anything else, so with one eye on my grandson, I picked up the trash in the surrounding area and threw it into the nearby container. The area looked much nicer. On the street where we live, a little over half of our neighbors have lived on that same end of the street for over 20 years. The rest have been there between about 6 months to 5 years. We “old timers” always introduce ourselves to the new folks that move in. We let them know who we are in hopes that they will follow our example in yard upkeep, being neighborly, and hopefully help them feel proud to be among us as our neighbors. We live in a blue collar neighborhood, income is likely on the more humble side of the middle class range, and we haven’t had any major crime in the 23 years we’ve lived there. We keep an eye out for each other and notify each other when something might be out of sorts. The Victor Valley is a wonderful place to live: Mountains, beaches and Las Vegas nearby! Clear blue skies, clean air and the mysterious desert formations to enjoy. Our quality of life is how we make it. As a business owner or employee, we can set a good example through excellent customer service and be conscientious of how we deal with our clients and vendors, and provide a clean and welcoming facility. There are many facets to quality of life and one of the Chamber’s goals this year is to provide ideas on what it means to take pride in our community and what can we do to promote pride where we live, work and play. State Of The County Headlines CEO and Four Supervisors of San Bernardino County

t was standing room only for the Chamber’s Annual State of the County Address. Former Victor Valley Chamber Chairman of the Board, and current 1st District Supervisor Robert Lovingood pulled together a top-ranking panel of San Bernardino County officials to address chamber members on current issues in San Bernardino County. Fellow Supervisors touched on multiple issues including the push for “real world” technical training that can help people fill the job gaps and build our middle class, “Cradle to Career” education and the impact that the prison realignment has had on the county staffing and budgets. Recent victories such as campaign finance reform, eased land-use permits and major transportation projects moving forward were highlighted. The State of the County was sponsored by:

Chamber Welcomes Chris Lamoreaux to Board
T
he Board has named Chris Lamoreaux, co-owner of Coldwell Banker Commercial Real Estate and Coldwell Banker Home Source Residential Real Estate, to fill a seat on the Chamber Board of Directors. Chris has a degree in Marketing from Cal State San Bernardino and enjoys applying her knowledge and experience in her own business as well as helping others. She has been a business owner for over 23 years, and began her career in real estate brokerage 6 years ago. Many members will know Chris from her time as a Chamber Ambassador and recently she served as President of High Desert Opportunity. With family and history in the High desert, the passion for real estate and the opportunity the High Desert offers, the decision to return home and build a real estate company was easy. Chris lives in Apple Valley and enjoys involvement in the community through various charities and chambers of commerce.

LEGISLATIVE CORNER
A
s of this writing, Sacramento had been busy on many levels. Both CalChamber and our Legislative Action Committee are watching these various bills as they wind through the legislative process: • SB 850 Public Post Secondary Education This will establish a pilot program in the California Community College System allowing select community colleges to offer a single bachelor’s degree program as related to an unmet workforce need in the local community. There could be up to 15 community colleges in the program. Enrollments would start in 2017. The following bills will be considered again on August 14 and are opposed by the California Chamber of Commerce as “job killer” bills • AB 52 Substantial Expansion of CEQA Creates more opportunities for litigation and substantially increases project cost and delay by creating mandatory consultation requirements with Native American Tribes and by requiring lead agencies to analyze a project’s impacts to an entirely new resource area called Tribal Cultural Resources. • AB 1522 Paid Sick Leave Increases employer mandates by requiring all employers, large and small, to provide all employees in California with paid sick leave, and threatens employers with statutory penalties and litigation under the Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA) for alleged violations. • AB 1897 Contractor Liability Unfairly imposes liability on a contracting entity for the contractor’s wage and hour violations and lack of workers’ compensation coverage despite the lack of any evidence that the contracting entity controlled the working conditions or wages of the contractor’s employees. • AB 2416 Unproven Wage Liens Creates a dangerous and unfair precedent in the wage and hour arena by allowing employees to file liens on an employer’s real or personal property, or property where work was performed, based upon alleged yet unproven wage claims. There is also a proposal by Cal/OSHA to change amendments to the current heat illness prevention regulation, Title 8, Section 3395. These changes could impact many businesses with employees that spend time outdoors in either construction, landscaping, and making deliveries i.e. furniture, lumber, industrial or commercial materials. A public hearing is scheduled for mid-September. The new proposal is unprecedented in its far-reaching effects on businesses.

Make Your Life Easier
I
n this fast paced world everyone is continuously looking for ways to improve and streamline their lives. Recently our members replied to a survey on their app usage. With over 1 million iOS or Android apps available for download, it’s hard to know what’s out there. Of our respondents, most members use five to six apps daily. Social media apps ranked the highest in daily usage with Facebook, beating out LinkedIn and Twitter 4 to 1. With businesses realizing that social media can help their bottom line, there are a couple of apps mentioned that can help. Managing a business’s social media can be a full-time job and Hootsuite makes it easier by managing several social networks at once, scheduling messages and measuring engagement right from the dashboard. Alicia Garcia of Goodwill Industries recommends If This, Then That (ifttt.com) which allows you to combine Instagram and Twitter by creating a recipe that tweets your images anytime you post on Instagram. Once you create the recipe, it automatically tweets each picture on your stream. Banking and billing apps came in second in usage. Most usage was individual bank apps, but bill.com and billminder were noted. Bill.com came highly recommend by Brandi Johnson of Home Instead Senior Care. “It’s the
best time and money saver I’ve used. This app keeps banking, bill paying and receivables current and easily trackable. I was able to decrease my bookkeeping costs. All bills can be scanned into the app, there is no lengthy paper filing each month and I can view a bill from anywhere, not just in the office.” Billminder helps with recurring expenses. It can track these expenses, sync between devices and alerts can be set on all. It also makes recommendations on where you can save money. Square Register, which is used by the chamber, enables users to manage a business from anywhere by accepting credit cards on their free card reader. Square takes a 2.75% cut for all major cards without merchant accounts or hidden fees. Square was launched in 2010 by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and James McKelvey. It processes over $15 billion payments a year. Rounding out the survey in third place for usage was the category of maps/traffic apps. Most people spend their time trying to get from point A to B in the quickest possible route. Business people even more so, with traveling to meetings, sales calls, and deliveries taking a big chuck out of the daily work schedule. Google Maps was used by over 30% of respondents. Sue Moore of Purofirst Fire & Water Restoration, who spends

most days on the road, has found that C.A.R.R. is the best. This app is linked to the CHP incident reports. You can set your radius and check your route to avoid traffic, a real timesaver. Other traveling apps mentioned were: Taxi magic (summons taxis) by Katherine Beyer of VVWRA and Gas Buddy (finds lowest priced gas) by Charles Luebke of The Brass Pickle Deli. Now-a-days, productivity isn’t expected to stop when you leave the confines of the office. There were a few apps mentioned that can help simplify and organize projects when you’re on the go. The first is Evernote, suggested by Tom Hoegerman of AVUSD and Sam Pulice of Mojave Copy & Printing. It’s one of the most popular apps on the market according to the Apple App Store. It is an all-in-one tool that keeps all notes, notebooks, to-do-lists organized. It has become the ultimate as a note-taking, archiving tool. If you use more than one computer or mobile device, this will make life much easier. There is a free version and a full version for a monthly fee. Got a stack of business cards on your desk? Derek King of Excelsior Charter Schools and Sue Moore of Purofirst have the solution for you. Derek rates Business Card Reader Pro (BCR) highly. Scan any business card on your phone and it puts all of the information in your contact list including email addresses, takes about 20 seconds. It was $1 when he bought it. Contact Snap is Sue’s pick. She’s tried a lot and likes this the best, it works basically the same as BCR pro. Another is CardMunch owned by LinkedIn, which made Forbes list of top business apps. It turns your business cards into LinkedIn connections. Dropbox, mentioned by 10% of respondents also on the Forbes top business app list, automatically syncs your files as you edit them. It’s one of the most popular cloud storage companies and offers 2G of storage for free. Bizzabo, another Forbes pick and recommended by Bridget Ayers our guest speaker for the Social Media workshops, it the best way to meet new people at conferences and events. It displays real-time event information, and tweets and allows you to search for attendees you want to meet. Bizzabo’s algorithm also recommends the best contacts for you, based on information from your Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts. In the category of “they have an app for that?” I present — Burner. Ever wanted to make a call, but didn’t want the recipient to have your cell number, (Doctors are you listening)? This app provides disposable, temporary phone numbers. The numbers

work like your regular cell number. When might you want this, how about dating, job searches and Craiglist ads. Over 10% of our respondents either don’t have a smart phone, or don’t want to get lulled into the “Candy Crush” black hole that slowly creeps in when you delve into the world of apps. Many respondents were surprised when they stopped to contemplate how many apps they use everyday. Most respondents are dressed for success and the weather as over 20% use some sort of weather app each day. 20% also use a news media app everyday to keep up to date on happenings both locally and nationally. A lot of members use fitness apps, either counting steps, calories etc. Shane Shubert of Hall & Forman uses Fooducate. “It gives food product information about any type of food I can think of. Although I’m not considered a health food junkie it has certainly helped me to make better food choice decisions.” And finally on a lighter note, this response from Rob Kurth of Kursch Group… How many apps do you use on a daily basis? “I usually take 4 or 5 naps on a daily basis. What are your top 3 – 5 apps? Power nap, Cat nap and Food coma nap. Thanks to all who responded. Now get out there and download.
