Under the sea, over the top W Spoon’s assorted dishes bring more fun to your buffet trip

ICTORVILLE — Many buffet lovers will tell you the best way to experience a new buffet is to first get an eyeful of all there is to devour before filling up your first plate. Sure, it’s all-you-can-eat, but why not make sure to try the dishes that appeal most to you the first go-round? At W Spoon, that first go-round is likely to take you — plate in hand, of course — to arguably the most popular part of its restaurant: the hibachi grill. An assortment of options prepared fresh in front of you is not only a fun way to dine, it’s a delicious one. At this powerhouse buffet — coincidentally situated next to two gyms — they use cuts of New York strip in their meat selection, which is rounded out with chicken and, for surf lovers, shrimp and imitation crab. With that comes a proper complement of veggies, including fresh-sliced jalapenos for those who want to add a kick to their plate. Beyond these savory selections, there’s a world of seafood and other tasty treats awaiting your second — and third, and fourth, if you’re so inclined — trip to the serving stations. Some of it is more traditional fare, like the crab salad and fried shrimp that offer familiar tastes but help serve as a starting off point to discover more decadent flavor profiles. That type of decadence is found in their coconut pineapple shrimp and their rotating freshmade sushi rolls. While many buffets offering sushi simply unpack premade

rolls from a vendor and set them out for consumption, W Spoon has a chef dedicated to making the rolls you’ll find here. Some of the sushi at W Spoon strays even further from typical, such as the saury sushi, which is similar in taste and texture to eel, and nigiri choices with octopus and clams. There are also all-you-caneat snow crab legs with drawn butter for dipping during dinner hours and a delectable “baked seafood” dish featuring imita-

tion crab meat that’s served in scoop-size portions on a halfshell. Dishes like these make it easy to fit several sample-sizes of numerous offerings at a time on a plate. Charm and delicacy don’t end with the seafood, though. We recommend the green pepper beef. It’s a hearty concoction similar to beef and broccoli at a Chinese restaurant with the broccoli subbed out for sliced green bell peppers and onions to raise the flavor

profile. The dish has a tinge of sweetness at the end that complements the savory beef. And, as if we had to tell you: Don’t forget dessert. Desserts at W Spoon are like their main-dish counterparts: seemingly of a different color from a “regular buffet.” They include creme puffs, vanilla roll, baked macaroons and, standing out brightly, a mango mousse. This mousse is easy to spot with its orange top and explains its own name easily with high trop-

ical notes from the mango infusion. Buffets are an opportunity for the whole family to put together individual dinners in a united setting. W Spoon Buffet takes the idea of individual compilation to a new level and makes for a unique dining experience unlike any other in the Victor Valley. A1 Grill Teriyaki & Roll offers loads of tasty options By Kathy Young Dining Out

sian food lovers here in the High Desert make much of their good fortune when it comes to dining out with friends or family and sampling the best of Asian cuisine. Diners have access to A1 Grill Teriyaki & Roll, an “Asian fusion” eatery with a drive-thru window, comfortable “dinein” seating and a menu that offers the finest in

Japanese sushi, soups, salads, Chinese specialties and more. Eat in, take out, your choice. Even better, for those diners with sensitivities to some ingredients used in Asian sauces and dressings — MSG being an often cited culprit — all concerns vanish at A1 Grill because the sauces and dressings are made from scratch using natural ingredients. Not only are these condiments

tastier, they are allergyand sensitivity-free. Their “house secret” teriyaki sauce is such a popular item, many diners opt to help themselves to extra servings. There are tidy containers near the soft-drink dispenser at the front counter, and diners love to put this sauce on everything they order. Trust us when we say, it is that good. Whether you’re in a hurry for a quick lunch

and opting for a leisurely dining experience, you can select from one of their tasty bowls — chicken, beef, shrimp, salmon or steamed veggies as well as combinations thereof, served on a bed of the best shortgrain sticky and truly premium rice available — or a plate — a bowl with salad and soup, you will be pleased with the taste sensations in every bite. The meat, poultry and seafood are prepared

perfectly, grilled and seasoned to enhance the flavors within as well as complement the other items on the plate. A1 Grill is one place where what you order will look almost exactly like the menu picture on the wall. That’s how much attention to detail is paid to every item available to eat in, take out or take home. Soup lovers will enjoy the clear miso soup at A1 Grill; sushi lovers can

partake of the Special Combination Plates — a California Roll with any bowl option plus miso soup or a green salad. The “house secret” teriyaki sauce comes with these combo plates, too. If you have not tried A1 Grill Teriyaki & Roll for yourself, by all means head to 15061 Bear Valley Road in Hesperia or call 760-949-8900. They are open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Their website is www.a1grill.com.
