‘Mile High Club’ not to be overlooked Lunch menu, specials as beloved as breakfast at Old Town Hesperia restaurant By Martial Haprov For Dining Out

The Turkey Club Sandwich, a lunch favorite at the Mile High Cafe in Hesperia. James Quigg, Dining Out

ESPERIA — What do you do when your favorite breakfast spot serves up equally delicious and filling dishes on their lunch menu? Easy: Dine there more often. While Mile High Cafe is arguably known for its monstrous omelets, delectable fruit-topped waffles and sizzling steak and eggs, the restaurant’s lunch menu simply cannot be ignored. In fact, General Manager Paul Lyell tells Dining Out there are customers who not only come here specifically for the lunch menu, but they also have favorites. And some of those favorites span a large portion of the regular customer base. The Mile High Club sandwich is a perfect example. A staple of the lunch menu here since the restaurant opened in its first location at an airport 4.9 miles west of its current home, this club lives up to its name. It’s piled a mile high — OK, maybe not a mile, but if you stacked it from end to end, it’d reach the culinary equivalent — with thinly sliced deli turkey, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on the toasted bread of your choice. It’s a monster. Like the bread, any of this sandwich’s components are adjustable. That is to say they’ll make it however you want it. In fact, they’ll make just about anything you want, provided they can. “If I have the product in the restaurant, you can have anything you want,” Lyell says. On that note, take for another example the fried chicken. Crispy, golden brown and full of tender, juicy meat, the fried chicken lunch is generally only featured on Mile High’s specials — nowhere on the regular menu — once or twice a week.

But if fried chicken is the mood you’re in and it is in stock, just ask. Another of those “only on the specials menu” items is the bacon avocado burger. It, along with all burgers, is always a hit among hungry customers, Lyell says. All of Mile High’s burger patties are a whopping 11 ounces each — which means a double cheeseburger packs 22 ounces of hearty beef. If you’ve not been here before or you don’t come often, make sure to check out the specials menu before making a decision. For the uninitiated, it’s full of different dishes every day — the restaurant rotates about 150 specials in all with 10 to 15 to choose from at any given open hour of the day — that stray a bit from the “norm” but offer an enormous view at the character within Mile High’s kitchen. On Fridays, Mile High Cafe has fish-themed specials including wahoo and beer-battered fish tacos, housemade New England Clam Chowder (also available on weekends) and fish and chips. And for those looking for a fun Taco Tuesday chow spot, Mile High is open from 4 to 9 p.m. every Tuesday. “We’re known for big portions on pretty much everything we offer,” Paul said. “You’re not gonna go away hungry.” The restaurant also serves beer and wine, including a wine-based “Bloody Caesar,” which is similar to a Bloody Mary but incorporates Clamato. They’re listed high for the local area on a popular social media site if one searches for “Bloody Mary.” Mile High Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every day except when Thanksgiving Day and three days for Christmas, at 8832 Orange St. in Hesperia. Find the restaurant on social media by searching “Mile High Cafe Hesperia” or call 760-9478844.

The Mile High Cafe in Hesperia recently changed its chicken supplier in order to be able to provide customers with larger fried chicken portions. James Quigg, Dining Out

visit to Cross Eyed Cow Pizza in Oro Grande is so much more than a short drive from Victorville up National Trails Highway — also known as Historic Route 66. It is an adventure that is worth the little bit of time it takes to go just slightly “out of the way” to a fun establishment where you get the feeling you’re going to enjoy wonderful food made with homemade sauces and dressings that go with imaginative sandwiches, salads and pizzas.

The place gives off definite “good vibrations.” And going to Cross Eyed Cow is an experience that should enjoyed from the moment you get out of your car until you drive out of the parking lot and head home again. If you or someone in your dining party is a “Stick to the Basics” kind of eater — not inclined to venture forth into the culinary unknown — Cross Eyed Cow can make their dining adventure more fun. These “inside the box” diners can stick to standard fare, ordering a plain cheese pizza —

probably their all-time favorite — with no surprises. Cross Eyed Cow Pizza will serve the best cheesy pizza ever and without any pressure at all make it easy to “build on a cheese pizza” with imaginative ingredients like cashews, sun-dried tomatoes, anchovies, artichoke hearts, spinach, garlic and more. Nothing on the Cross Eyed Cow menu is overdone — and we’re not talking “overcooked,” either. The idea behind every dish is to build on the basic sandwich, salad or pizza by adding ingredients carefully chosen to

both enhance the finished product and tickle the taste buds. The result is a spectacular eating experience, start to finish. Everything “works” because of the creative process that puts it all together. Owners Donna and Jim, manager Grace and members of the kitchen crew have tried and tested various ingredients, and the results are not only delicious but incredibly popular. Repeat business at Cross Eyed Cow is off the charts. Their appetizers include a tangy bruschetta on toast and the

Woody, which is sausage links, several cheeses, peppers, olives and h o m e m ad e c h i p s o n a wooden board, made to share with pairings of adult beverages that enhance every item on the board. Sub sandwiches at most pizza parlors come hot or cold. Cross Eyed Cow’s sub sandwich choices are the same but are built on “bread baked daily,” according to the menu, and includes a bag of chips. Three of the subs — TXI Special with Italian sausage links and pepperoni; the Train Wreck

with me atb a lls; a nd Knights Honor Roll with chicken — come “openfaced” and hot with Marinara and several kinds of cheese melted to perfection. Cross Eyed Cow has a Facebook page and for social media lovers, this is the place to keep up with menu specials, special events and more. Also visit their website, crosseyedcowpizza.com Th e re stau ra nt is located at 19242 National Trails Highway, Oro Grande. The telephone number is 760-241-1987. Cross Eyed Cow also caters.
